On December 11, 2024, Google revealed its most advanced AI model up to this date: Gemini 2.0. This is where the technology giant is considered to take a big stride toward making its long-dreamt “universal assistant” possible. Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai calls Gemini 2.0 “the new agentic era” and a major leap for AI agents.
The Evolution from Gemini 1.0
Gemini 2.0 surpasses its predecessor, Gemini 1.0, released in December 2023. The earlier Gemini 1.0 version primarily focused on multimodal capabilities. It enabled the AI to understand various forms of media, such as videos and code. The next step is integrating native image, audio output and native tool use, among others. It will enable Gemini 2.0 to respond to the user in more dynamic and human-like ways. Doing so will open up a new array of possibilities for AI-assisted tasks.
One of the notable features of Gemini 2.0 is that it can act as a powerful research assistant through a new feature called “Deep Research.” Deep Research uses advanced reasoning and long-context capabilities to explore complex topics and generate comprehensive reports on behalf of users. This will be particularly valuable for those engaged in intensive research or seeking detailed insights across multiple subjects. According to Pichai, Gemini 2.0 is not just organising and understanding information but making the information much more useful in both everyday tasks and deeper analytical work.
Googleโs Trillium Hardware
Gemini 2.0 is powered by Google’s custom Trillium hardware, in this case, the sixth-generation TPU. This was designed to handle the intense processing needs of AI models. This hardware played a crucial role in the training and inference processes of the model. It ensures the AI model operates at cutting-edge efficiency and performance.
Wall Street went ecstatic on the day the Gemini 2.0 was launched as Google’s stock price jumped more than 4% the following day. Google also revealed that the Gemini 2.0 Flash experimental model will be available to all users, and more model sizes are expected to roll out early in 2025.
Project Astra and More
Looking forward, Gemini 2.0 will also be integrated into other Google products including the highly-anticipated upgrades of Project Astra, the digital assistant competitor of Apple’s Siri. Combined with the functionalities that Google Search, Lens, and Maps would bring into it, Project Astra will be one of the essential assistants that could help people communicate in any language and tackle different types of workloads.
