After learning that these services were being abused, Samsung is limiting employee access to so-called generative artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT. The South Korean tech giant revealed to CNBC on Tuesday that it is temporarily limiting the use of generative AI on its laptops.

According to the letter, the firm is concerned that information sent to artificial intelligence platforms like Google Bing and Google Bard is retained on external servers, making it harder to recover and remove and perhaps exposing the information to other users.

Use Of ChatGPT By Samsung Staff

According to a study the company conducted last month on the usage of AI technologies internally, 65% of respondents think that these services present a security risk. The email claims that Samsung engineers unintentionally uploaded internal source code to ChatGPT earlier in April. What the information covered is unclear.

“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally,” Samsung told staff. “While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI.”

Samsung is the next major corporation to voice concerns about technology. A few Wall Street institutions, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp., and Citigroup Inc., either prohibited or restricted the use of chatbots in February, just a few months after OpenAI’s chatbot service sparked a flurry of interest in the technology. Due to privacy concerns, Italy also forbade the use of ChatGPT, though it has since changed its mind.

“We ask that you diligently adhere to our security guidelines and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment,” Samsung said in the memo.
