Hims & Hers Faces Backlash Over Super Bowl Commercial

Telehealth company Hims & Hers is facing criticism for its Super Bowl commercial promoting compounded versions of weight loss drugs similar to Wegovy and Ozempic. The ad highlights flaws in the U.S. healthcare system but does not disclose that these drugs are unapproved by the Food and Drug Administration. Health experts warn that the omission misleads consumers and could pose safety risks.

Elizabeth Glowacki, a health communication expert at Northeastern University, argues that the ad gives the false impression that consumers can self-prescribe these medications without medical supervision. “They make it seem as though you can take all of this into your own hands without supervision, which can have harmful consequences,” she said.

The ad uses emotional storytelling and visually appealing packaging, a tactic known as fear appeal marketing. Glowacki warns that the adโ€™s design, particularly its green-labelled packaging, may falsely suggest the drugs are safer than they actually are.

Hims & Hers has defended its campaign, saying critics are protecting a flawed healthcare system. However, Glowacki advises consumers to be cautious and consult a healthcare provider before using such drugs. “Still talk to your doctor and always scrutinise ingredients before use,” she said.
