The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has recently rolled out new vehicle registration rules. This marks a significant shift in how vehicles are regulated in the capital. This initiative, led by the Excise & Taxation (E&T) department, aims to streamline the registration process and enforce strict compliance with vehicle identification norms. For vehicle owners in Islamabad, these changes are poised to bring both challenges and benefits.

Crackdown on Non-Standard Number Plates

One of the most impactful changes is the crackdown on non-standard number plates. The E&T department has made it clear that vehicles displaying non-compliant number plates will face severe consequences. These include the cancellation of their registration. This measure is part of a broader effort to standardize vehicle identification across the city, ensuring that all vehicles on the road adhere to uniform registration protocols.

In addition to the cancellation of registration, vehicle owners will also be subjected to a hefty re-registration fee to rectify their non-compliance. The fees are tiered based on the engine capacity of the vehicle. Owners of vehicles with engines up to 1000cc will need to pay Rs. 5,000. On the other hand those with engines between 1000cc and 2000cc will face a Rs. 10,000 fee. For vehicles with engines exceeding 2000cc, the re-registration fee climbs to Rs. 20,000. Motorcycles are not exempt from these rules, with a re-registration fee of Rs. 1,000 imposed on them.

Penalty Multiplier for Repeat Offenders

The E&T department has also introduced a penalty multiplier to deter repeat offenses. If a vehicle is found in violation of the new rules more than once, the owner will be required to pay a fine five times the original amount. This stringent measure is expected to dissuade repeated non-compliance and encourage vehicle owners to adhere to the new regulations.

While these changes may seem burdensome to some vehicle owners, they are part of a larger effort to bring order and organization to Islamabad’s transportation system. The new rules are designed to ensure that all vehicles on the road are easily identifiable and compliant with the city’s regulations. This ultimately leads to a safer and more efficient transportation environment.
