Big news is brewing in Pakistan cricket as former captain Waqar Younis is poised for a new, high-powered role. In a recent meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore, Waqar discussed finalizing his appointment. Though a few details still need ironing out, it looks like Waqar is on track to become the board’s cricketing supremo.
From Consultant to Cricketing Chief
For now, Waqar will start as a consultant and advisor to the chairman on cricket affairs. However, if the appointment becomes permanent, his role may expand to something akin to Robert Key’s position as managing director at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
An official from the board mentioned that Naqvi wants a former cricketer to handle all cricket-related matters, including selection and high performance. This would allow Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, to focus on running the board without stretching himself too thin.
A Busy Schedule Ahead
With one of the busiest seasons for Pakistan’s men’s team approaching, Naqvi was eager to get someone in place quickly. The upcoming calendar includes a two-Test series against Bangladesh in August, three Tests against England in October, two Tests in South Africa over Christmas and New Year’s, and a Test series against the West Indies.
Additionally, there will be a triangular ODI series with South Africa and New Zealand, the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, and an eight-match white-ball series in New Zealand in March 2025. On top of the international fixtures, a packed domestic schedule awaits, with three new tournaments (one for each format) and the PSL.
Portfolio of Waqar Younis
Waqar Younis is no stranger to the Pakistan cricket setup. He has served as bowling or assistant coach three times and as head coach twice. His last role was as bowling coach under Misbah-ul-Haq after the 2019 World Cup.
This new role, however, will be his most expansive yet. Waqar will manage everything from international fixtures to the selection committee and the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players participating in various T20 leagues worldwide.
Balancing Pakistan’s international schedule with the demand for their players in T20 leagues will be one of Waqar’s biggest challenges. Yet, his extensive experience and deep understanding of the game make him well-suited for this role.
