Rafael Nadal, one of the most celebrated players in the history of tennis, seems to be fitting quite well into retirement. The 22-time Grand Slam champion officially ended his professional tennis career in November, marking the end to unparalleled dominance.
At the latest Gran Gala of Mundo Deportivo, Nadal was awarded the Extraordinary Trophy for his contributions to the sport. During the event, the Spaniard spoke about his transition away from competitive tennis.
A Smooth Transition
“I am fine, perfect, doing a different kind of work but trying to organise what my life is right now and what my life will be in the future,” Nadal stated. He stated that every big change in life requires time and he doesn’t mind where he currently stands. “The last years of my career were difficult and that helps me not to miss it so much.”
Unlike many retired athletes who find it hard to adapt to life after professional sports, Nadal embraced the transition gracefully and showed appreciation for what tennis has offered him.
Relief from Physical Struggles
Throughout his career, Nadal faced persistent injuries that often tested his resilience. Now, he is enjoying a life relatively free from pain. “I’m living with very little pain and that’s very important to me,” he said. “Getting up and walking down the stairs normally is huge progress for me in my daily life.”
This newfound comfort with his body is a change of welcome comfort for someone who pushed his body to the limit for two decades. Nadal admitted that in retirement, he is not pushing himself too hard but trying to have a healthier and balanced lifestyle.
An Exciting Future Ahead
Though he is retired, Nadal is yet to figure out what is next. “There are a lot of things to get used to and I have to discover what I’m really motivated to do in this new life,” he noted.
