What is HMPV Virus and What are its Symptoms?

Three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in young children in India. This marks the total number of cases to be 7. Two cases were identified in Bengaluru, involving a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy, while the third case was detected in Gujarat. All young children are currently hospitalised in stable condition.

HMPV is a respiratory virus causing symptoms similar to colds and flu. Experts advise increased vigilance as the virus continues to spread in some regions. Meanwhile, China has reported a surge in infections due to HMPV, along with other respiratory pathogens like influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19. Videos circulating on social media suggest overcrowded hospitals and crematoriums, though no state of emergency has been declared.
