India’s biggest telecom majors, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have both signed unexpected agreements with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink internet services in the nation. The sudden development has left everyone surprised, especially considering that Musk had earlier had a run-in with these firms over satellite spectrum usage.
A Game-Changing Move for Internet Connectivity
With the world’s second-largest internet market in India and more than 670 million Indians remaining without access to the internet, Starlink’s foray intends to fill this digital gap, particularly in the far-flung and rural areas where conventional broadband services do not reach.

The agreements are still pending regulatory clearance, but if implemented, could dramatically change internet connectivity in India. Jio aims to market Starlink devices in its physical stores and e-shops and even provide installation services. Airtel, meanwhile, aims to merge Starlink’s services with its existing partnership with Starlink rival Eutelsat OneWeb to enhance connectivity even more.
Muskโs Influence and Policy Shifts
For Musk, these partnerships mark a significant win. After advocating for administrative spectrum allocation rather than auctioning, the Indian governmentโs recent policy shift aligned with Muskโs preference. His meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, where they discussed cooperation in space technology, further paved the way for these partnerships.

Pricing: The Deciding Factor for Consumers
From a customer point of view, the price will be an important issue. Conventional mobile data in India is one of the lowest prices in the globe at about 150 rupees ($2) monthly. Satellite broadband, on the other hand, tends to be about $150 per month. Nevertheless, the collaborations with Jio and Airtel may see prices fall to about 3,000 rupees ($36) monthly, making it cheaper for the masses.

Experts think the deals are also a means for Jio and Airtel to adjust to India’s changing telecom policy. Jio, which had been advocating for spectrum auctions, probably chose to partner with Starlink rather than risk falling behind.
Ultimately, these collaborations represent a strategic move for all concerned. For Musk, it’s a stepping stone to creating Starlink in India’s gigantic internet market. For Jio and Airtel, it’s a survival strategy to remain competitive in a changing telecom scenario.
