The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has shared a summary with the Cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to incentivize smartphone assembly within the country.
Syed Amin Ul Haque, the Federal Minister for IT & Telecom, said that locally assembled smartphones’ availability and their affordability is the top-most priority for the growth of the tech sector and to achieving mobile broadband penetration.
He further added that Pakistan could save a lot on foreign exchange on smartphone imports through local manufacturing. Moreover, a couple of years down the line Pakistan can even start to earn foreign exchange by exporting quality smartphones.
Furthermore, the minister added that this would also create employment opportunities for thousands of and help the country become more economically stable and the sector more developed.
Eventually, asides smartphone assembly and manufacturing, the country can support other industries and sectors via packing material and smartphone accessories and other exportable goods.
Earlier in 2017, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued guidelines for the assembly lines in the country in hopes of stepping up digitalization.
