Kuwait, as per the latest report by InterNations’ 2023 Expat Insider, has been designated as the “worst country for expats.” Out of 53 destinations evaluated, Kuwait emerged as the least appealing place for expatriates to reside and work.
The report examines multiple facets including quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finance, and expat essentials. Regrettably, Kuwait’s performance in the Expat Insider ranking aligns with its longstanding trend of disappointing outcomes.
Malte Zeeck, the founder of InterNations, expressed serious concern about Kuwait’s consistently low ranking. He highlighted that Kuwait has consistently been among the most poorly rated countries for the past ten years, claiming the last place in 2022 and 2023.
The report unveils that Kuwait is ranked at the bottom globally in terms of quality of life. Expats, in particular, expressed dissatisfaction with limited leisure options. Furthermore, nearly half of the expats surveyed felt their ability to freely express themselves and share opinions was constrained, which is more than triple the global average.
Kuwait’s healthcare system needs improvement in terms of accessibility, affordability, and quality. The report also emphasizes low rankings in categories such as local friendliness, making friends, culture, and welcoming atmosphere, all contributing to Kuwait’s position at the bottom of the ease of settling-in index.
Regarding working abroad, Kuwait occupies the 48th spot, with many expats expressing discontentment with their salaries and the inflexible local work culture.
In terms of expat essentials and personal finance, Kuwait also demonstrates poor performance. Only 34 percent of expats reported being satisfied with the overall cost of living.
However, there are a few positive aspects worth noting, such as expats finding it relatively easy to secure housing and adapt to daily life without needing proficiency in the local language.
Overall, the report presents a bleak picture, with only 43 percent of expats in Kuwait expressing contentment with their lives. This figure is significantly lower than the global average of 72 percent. The collective dissatisfaction across various factors solidifies Kuwait’s position as the worst country for expats.
