Sindh Lawyers Protests End, Except Baberlo Bypass

The Sindh Lawyers have officially concluded most of their sit-ins across Sindh after the federal government made a significant policy shift regarding the controversial canals project. The only protest that continues is the one at Baberlo Bypass.

Barrister Sarfaraz Metlo, Chairman of the Sindh High Court Bar Association, called the Council of Common Interests’ (CCI) latest decision a “collective success for Sindh.” Speaking to the media, Metlo expressed gratitude to the people, lawyers and nationalist groups who supported the protests.

The protests were launched in opposition to a proposed federal canals project that sparked fears over water scarcity and provincial rights. Critics argued that it could impact Sindh’s water share and violate the constitutional distribution of resources.

The CCI, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has now agreed that no new canal projects will proceed without the unanimous agreement of all provinces. This marks a major win for Sindh’s legal and political activists.

A joint committee has also been formed. It includes both federal and provincial representatives who will work toward a national consensus on water distribution and agricultural planning.

While most sit-ins have ended, the Baberlo Bypass protest continues for now. Leaders will hold a follow-up meeting later today to decide the fate of the remaining protest.

Metlo assured the public that the lawyers’ movement would keep monitoring the government’s actions. “We’ve paused, not stopped. We will return if the promises made are not honoured,” he warned.
