With millions of users daily generating and sharing content, TikTok has swept the globe. But along with this enormous popularity comes the duty to make sure that the content being produced is suitable and safe.
During the first-ever TikTok Safety Ambassadors Programme event held in Lahore, Anoushey Ashraf, a popular Pakistani VJ and content creator, emphasized the importance of creators’ responsibility towards their followers and the broader TikTok community. She believes that creators have a duty to create positive, uplifting, and respectful content, stating, “We need to take responsibility for the content that we put out there. That means ensuring our content is safe, appropriate, and doesn’t promote anything harmful or dangerous.”
Echoing Anoushey’s sentiments, Amtul Baweja of Patangeer, another content creator, was impressed by TikTok’s ability to detect and remove inappropriate content. “It’s amazing to see how quickly they can identify and remove things like hate speech, harassment, and dangerous acts,” she said.
However, despite the safety measures in place, some creators still engage in risky behavior for the sake of views and likes. Amtul understands the pressure to create viral content but emphasizes the importance of being mindful of the messages being sent to followers and the impact of the content created. “If something seems dangerous or risky, it’s better to err on the side of caution and not participate,” she said. According to her, creators have a responsibility to set a positive example for their followers and create content that is both fun and safe.
In Pakistan, where TikTok has become an incredibly popular platform, it is crucial for creators to be aware of the impact of their content. Anoushey and Amtul believe that it is up to all creators to ensure that TikTok remains a safe and positive space for everyone to enjoy. By creating content that is respectful, uplifting, and safe, creators can play an essential role in promoting a positive and welcoming environment for all TikTok users.
