In recent years, the cricketing world has been buzzing with comparisons between Pakistan’s Babar Azam and India’s Virat Kohli. But not everyone’s on board with these debates—former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, for one, finds them downright amusing.
Virat: The Greatest of This Generation?
Speaking on a sports talk show, Amir didn’t hold back in his praise for Virat Kohli. For him, there’s no question: Kohli is in a league of his own.
“I laugh when comparisons are made between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam, Steve Smith, or Joe Root,” Amir said. “Virat Kohli is the greatest player of this generation.”

Strong words, but Amir didn’t stop there. He highlighted Kohli’s unmatched ability to win games for India across all formats. According to him, no other modern batter comes close.
“Virat has won so many matches for India—something that seems almost impossible for any one player,” he emphasized.
The Comeback That Defines Kohli
What really sets Kohli apart, according to Amir, is his mental toughness and work ethic. He pointed to Kohli’s dismal tour of England in 2014, where the Indian batter struggled to cope with James Anderson and the seaming conditions.
“After his bad phase in England in 2014, the way he made a comeback and then performed brilliantly for the next 10 years was no ordinary feat,” Amir said.
Kohli didn’t just bounce back; he redefined himself. From a struggling batter in English conditions to one of the most consistent performers in cricket history, his journey is nothing short of inspirational.
Dismissing Kohli in the CT 2017 Final
Amir also shared his own special moment involving Kohli—the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final. Pakistan’s comprehensive victory over India in that match is etched in every Pakistani cricket fan’s memory. And for Amir, dismissing Kohli early was a turning point.
“His wicket in the 2017 Champions Trophy final was very important for us,” Amir recalled. “If Virat had not been dismissed, we would have lost the final because we all know how exceptional Virat’s record is while chasing runs.”
It’s hard to argue with that. Kohli’s chasing record is legendary, and removing him early in a big game is often the key to beating India.
