July 16th, 2019: After Meezan Bank declaring Netflix “unislamic” and refusing to accept customers’ Netflix payments for the same reason, complaints have surfaced about UBL doing the same.
@UBLDigital your 24 hour helpline had me wait 5 minutes to talk to a rep who took 10 seconds to inform me I can't pay for Netflix with my ubl card and proceeded to put me on hold again… pic.twitter.com/KuHfonb7QL

Hey anyone who’s using UBL card for Netflix facing payment decline issues??
— M (@madjabeen) June 16, 2019
2 days and still nothing from UBL and Netflix, my account is still freezed for none payment. UBL unable to process transaction. Typical. Amazon Prime on other hand working fine but its no way near as good as Netflix.

July 10th, 2019: A private bank in Pakistan has declared a popular movie and series streaming platform ‘Netflix’ as un-Islamic.
The news picked up after Netflix user Mohammed Ahmed Tariq reached out to the Shariah-compliant bank when his payments were rejected for the renewal for his subscription.
When he got in touch with the bank, he was informed that the issue was taking place because it falls against the bank’s Shariah policy.
While talking to BBC Urdu, Tariq shared that he had not even come close to think that this would be the reason for the rejection of his payment.
Mind-Games: Pakistani Web-Series on Money Laundering Eyes Netflix
i havent been able to make any payment since january to the music streaming service i use, and now they tell me that they will not process future payments to netflix. fuck your communistic so called “shariah” laws.

i spoke to a @MeezanBankLtd call center representative, and he just told me that the “shariah board” has decided that payment to websites like NETFLIX have been banned through their bank. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? what sort of a bullshit policy is this??
— TeflonDon (@Traganos_A) July 6, 2019
I don’t have a problem with Sharia law. But I have a problem with organisations misusing it for the optics. And no bank in Pakistan is Islamic since all of them offer interest.
Also, I closed my account.
Or kuch? https://t.co/qjOJHf2KLN— TeflonDon (@Traganos_A) July 8, 2019
First of all, I hadn’t asked them for all the information that the bank had given me over the phone. And it wasn’t even in my mind that the Netflix payment would be rejected because the bank deems it ‘non-Islamic.
The news has been confirmed from the private bank.
So it’s confirmed…Spoke to #MeezanBankLtd call center representative, and he confirmed me that the “shariah board” has decided that payment to websites like NETFLIX have been banned through their bank. #PremierIslamicBanking @Traganos_A you were right
