Elon Muskโs Neuralink has achieved another milestone, implanting its brain-computer interface device in a third human patient. The announcement was made during a streamed event in Las Vegas, where Musk shared updates about the companyโs progress. โWeโve got now three humans with Neuralinks implanted and theyโre all working well,โ Musk said. The company plans to expand the experimental procedure in 2025 with 20 to 30 more implants.
Neuralink, part of the growing field of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, aims to assist individuals with severe neurological conditions like paralysis and ALS. The device involves electrodes implanted in the brain, enabling patients to control external devices such as computers or smartphones using their thoughts. The companyโs flagship clinical study, the Prime Study, is FDA-approved and includes five paralysed patients. These patients are testing the implantโs ability to restore communication and control.

Another FDA-approved study, Convoy, focuses on enabling patients to control robotic arms. This could restore some independence for individuals with debilitating conditions. The Prime Studyโs first patient, Noland Arbaugh, received the implant last year, marking a significant step forward in Neuralink’s mission. Musk acknowledged that the technology is still in its early stages but noted the promising results so far.
Neuralinkโs progress has also raised ethical and safety concerns. Experts emphasise the need for extensive research and oversight to ensure these devicesโ safety and effectiveness. While these implants could lead to broader applications in medicine and cognitive enhancement, the long-term effects and risks are still under study. Neuralink remains at the forefront of BCI innovation due to its FDA approvals and trials.
