As Eid-ul-Fitr 2025 approaches, Pakistanis are eager to uphold the cherished tradition of giving ‘Eidi’—gifts of money, typically in the form of crisp, new currency notes.
In previous years, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) facilitated this custom by issuing fresh notes worth millions of rupees before the festival. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, this practice has been discontinued, leaving many to rely on worn-out notes for their Eid celebrations.
This year, the SBP has yet to make an official announcement regarding the issuance of new currency notes for Eid. Sources indicate that the likelihood of fresh notes being released remains low, continuing the trend from recent years.

Consequently, those wishing to present new notes as Eidi may have to turn to the black market, where currency dealers are expected to sell them at inflated prices—a common occurrence during the festive season.
Eid-ul-Fitr is anticipated to fall on 30 March 2025, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal. The exact date will be confirmed by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee based on the sighting of the moon. This year, Pakistanis may enjoy an extended holiday period, with reports suggesting a break from 29 March to 6 April 2025.
In the absence of official channels for obtaining fresh currency notes, individuals are advised to plan accordingly for their Eidi preparations. Staying informed through official SBP communications and avoiding black market dealings can help ensure a safe and joyous Eid celebration for all.
