Dr Raghib Naeemi, chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology, highlighted the importance of using social media wisely. He announced that the council had reviewed and approved earlier recommendations on social media use. At a press conference following a council meeting on Wednesday. The chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology declared that some of the ‘un-Islamic’ uses of VPNs include making statements against national security and engaging in character assassination. Dr Naeemi further added that if there are attempts to gain access to indecent or immoral sites, or incidents of religious blasphemy are being spread through it. This would make using it un-Islamic and against Sharia.

However, Dr Naeemi continued, that VPNs can be used constructively and positively. He mentioned that if VPNs are being used for educational purposes, as a means of communication, or to convey positive messages, then there is no harm in using them. He further added that if the VPN is registered, and is being used positively, then it is well within Islamic frameworks.

VPN usage has been boosted in Pakistan especially to access sites like X, previously known as Twitter, which has been banned since February. Now, VPNs have become a useful tool for accessing blocked and restricted websites, allowing users to evade internet restrictions and continue their online browsing.
