OpenAI is bringing AI closer to everyone with two new features: WhatsApp integration and a free phone service for US users.
As part of its “12 Days of Christmas” updates, OpenAI has launched a phone service allowing US-based users to call ChatGPT at 1-800-CHATGPT. This will offer users 15 minutes of free call time per month. Globally, users can now message ChatGPT on WhatsApp at 1-800-242-8478, making AI accessible to over two billion WhatsApp users.

OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, described the initiative as a “stepping stone for AI newcomers.” The phone service runs on OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp feature is powered by GPT-4o mini, tailored for user-friendly interactions.
Unlike the traditional web-based platform, these experimental features are designed for less tech-savvy users. OpenAI also reassured users that no data from these services will be used to train its AI models.
US users can access the phone service now, while WhatsApp messaging is available globally. OpenAI is closely monitoring feedback to refine and expand these services further.
