In a world where transparency is key to consumer trust, certain businesses still resort to deceptive practices to maximize profits. OPTP, a popular fast-food chain, appears to be engaging in such a scheme by manipulating prices based on the mode of payment. A recent investigation reveals this unsettling trend, aiming to expose the discrepancy and hold the chain accountable.

To uncover this fraudulent activity, I conducted a straightforward experiment. I visited an OPTP outlet and purchased masala fries twice, paying with cash once and a credit card the other time. The findings were alarming and revealed a deliberate attempt to mislead customers.

Cash Payment

When I paid with cash, the bill amounted to Rs. 550. The breakdown was as follows:

  • Price of Masala Fries: Rs. 474
  • GST (16%): Rs. 76

Card Payment

When paid with a credit card, the total remained Rs. 550, but the details were different:

  • Price of Masala Fries: Rs. 524
  • GST (5%): Rs. 26

Despite the final amount being the same, the manipulation of the base price and GST rate was evident. Instead of applying the 5% GST on Rs. 474, OPTP calculated it on an inflated price of Rs. 524.

Broader Implications

This practice isn’t isolated to a single outlet. Similar discrepancies were observed across multiple branches:

  • OPTP Sadar Rawalpindi
  • OPTP Peshawar Road Rawalpindi
  • OPTP Gulberg Greens Islamabad
  • Meat the Cheese Gulberg Lahore

These findings suggest a systematic approach to this deceptive pricing, likely affecting countless customers.

The Impact on Consumers

While the total amount remains unchanged, this practice undermines consumer trust and violates ethical business standards. It raises several concerns:

  • Transparency: Customers deserve clarity in pricing, regardless of the payment method.
  • Trust: Deceptive practices erode trust, a fundamental aspect of customer loyalty.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Such discrepancies may violate consumer protection laws, warranting investigation by relevant authorities.

Call to Action

Consumers are urged to scrutinize their receipts and report any discrepancies. Businesses must prioritize transparency and integrity, ensuring that customers are not misled. Regulatory bodies should investigate these practices and enforce compliance to protect consumer rights.
