ICC World T20 2016: Women Seek World T20 Boost In Equality Battle

Pakistani-women-cricket-team

From poor pay to lack of training grounds and media coverage, and even sexual harassment, women cricketers have long faced inequality in a multi-billion dollar sport dominated by men.

Australia and England face off in the Women’s World Twenty20 semi-finals in Delhi on Wednesday, and New Zealand play the West Indies in Mumbai on Thursday.

With both semi-finals and Sunday’s final in Kolkata immediately preceding the men’s equivalents at the same grounds, players are hoping that success in the tournament — and in front of a global TV audience — can inch them further towards parity.

Pakistani-women-cricket-team

“We are hoping to win and hoping that will kick start more interest in the women’s team. So watch this space,” said New Zealand captain Suzie Bates who has racked up 171 runs at the tournament in cricket-mad India.

“It’s about changing people’s attitudes and getting the message across,” the veteran of World T20s said of the struggles facing the women.

Cricketers say the sport has come a long way since the 1970s when women started playing professionally, and they have fought hard to have access to decent grounds on which to practise, funds for equipment and qualified coaches.

The International Cricket Council’s 2005 order for men’s and women’s national governing bodies to merge was hailed by many in the sport as a chance for the women to flourish.

But in India, they were left to languish, with the all-powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reluctant to promote or develop their game or organise frequent international tours, according to Indian sports journalist Neeru Bhatia.

Women’s World T20: Pakistan Beat Bangladesh By 9 Wickets

“It was really pathetic at one point,” Bhatia, The Week magazine’s correspondent, said, adding the BCCI started making amends, including introducing contracts, after a recent change in leadership.

In New Zealand and neighbouring Australia, Bates said she has noticed a shift in attitudes in recent years towards “what the men get the women get too”.

Sexual harassment

For the first time at this tournament, for example, the White Ferns have single rooms, rather than sharing with teammates to save costs. But their request for business-class seats was refused for their 17-hour flight from New Zealand to Dubai, a luxury given to the men.

Indian women cricket team

In Sri Lanka, the team are trying to put a sexual harassment scandal behind them that skipper Shashikala Siriwardena conceded had damaged their international image.

Sri Lankan cricket sacked three officials last year following allegations that women from the national team were being asked to perform sexual favours to keep their places.

“Step by step, they (the cricket board) have solved it. It’s a good start for women’s cricket,” Siriwardena told AFP.

“Lots of officials are new after those problems we had in the last two years. Other countries were asking about it. It was damaging for our image.”

In Pakistan, women reportedly raised similar allegations about selectors from a city club two years ago, prompting an investigation by the national cricket board.

For many, playing professional cricket is tough financially, compared to the men who can earn six figures signing up for glitzy tournaments such as the Indian Premier League.

Bates tells of women being forced to choose between their jobs and cricket — with New Zealand paying a NZ$12,000 (8,000 US dollars) annual retainer for its top players.

Difficult to stomach

She said she was appalled by the Indian Wells tennis chief’s comments this month that women players owed their success to men, which ignited a furious gender row in the sport.

“I found that difficult to stomach, as I think many women would,” she told AFP, saying women would shine brighter if they were given the same opportunities as men.

But she points to the huge success of the recent inaugural Big Bash T20 league, played in Australia prior to the men’s tournament of the same name, as evidence of progress.

The lucrative competition, featuring the world’s top players, attracted solid television audiences and match attendances. And a similar Women’s Cricket Super League is set to take off in England later this year.

“I think women’s cricket is definitely building and I think it’s come so long (far) in such a short amount of time,” Australian pace bowler Holly Ferling said.

women team

Bangladesh captain Jahanara Alam said TV coverage of her side’s matches would boost public support and perhaps attract much-needed sponsors in her impoverished country, whose male players, in comparison, are feted like rock stars.

“Even though, we have a good side we are not getting the kind of support we deserve. We are not complaining but it’s not enough,” Alam said.

“(But) I’m sure the day will come, it’s not very far when we will be treated equally.”

Waqar Younis Apologises For Early Exit From World T20 & Offers To Resign

waqar-younis

Pakistan‘s head coach Waqar Younis Tuesday begged forgiveness from the nation and said he was prepared to resign after his team was knocked out of the World Twenty20 at the group stage.

The 2009 champions have been widely blasted by fans following a lacklustre performance with just one victory against lowly ranked Bangladesh and big losses to India, New Zealand and Australia.

Team members were jeered on their return this weekend by huge crowds at Lahore airport, who chanted “Shame! Shame!”

Addressing a press conference at the Pakistan Cricket Board headquarters in Lahore on Tuesday, Younis said: “I place my hands together and beg forgiveness from the nation.”

ICC T20 World Cup 2016: Schedule & Match Fixtures

The fast-bowling legend, who was hired as head coach for a second time in 2014 and whose contract is due to expire in May, added that he was prepared to stand down if it was in the team’s best interest, but stopped short of offering his resignation.

“If my leaving makes things better, then I would do it without delay,” he said.

He also echoed calls made last week for a revamp of the country’s domestic structure and added that the malaise stemmed from Pakistan‘s lack of home games since 2009 militant attacks on the Sri Lankan team.

“When there is no cricket at home then the foundation will for sure become weak,” he said.

Pakistan‘s early exit prompted a wave of criticism in the cricket-mad country, with veterans like Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik singled out in particular.

Afridi is expected to make a decision about his future very soon.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Pays Tribute to Lahore Blast Victims

Sharmeen-Obaid-Chinoy

Pakistan‘s first Academy award winner, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, has paid tribute to victims of the Easter bombing in the eastern city of Lahore with a short film posted to her Facebook page.

The 1.5-minute film titled “An Ode to Lahore, the Beautiful City” opens with a shot of the famous Badshahi mosque before showing images from the popular park where a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up in an attack targeting Christians on Easter Sunday.

At least 72 people died in the blast as families enjoyed the warm spring evening, many of them children. The bomber had walked close to a play area with swings before detonating.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

Chinoy, a journalist, filmmaker and activist, has won two Academy Awards for the documentaries Saving Face (2012) and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015).

Her video, posted Monday, showed old images of the play area before Sunday’s devastation, as well as footage from a candle-lit vigil that took place for the victims in Lahore.

“Lahore used to teach you to make bridges in order to reach each other,” a female voiceover says in Urdu as the images flit by.

“We were liberal people, we were tolerant, we wanted to live with each other, we had the freedom to speak our minds.”

The film then displays news footage from Sunday’s carnage, with images of ambulances arriving at the blast site.

“We deprived our city of its personality,” the voice says.

Children in school uniforms are shown playing in narrow streets as they smile, before the words of the country’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, appear: “There is no power on earth that can undo Pakistan“.

Sunday’s attack was the worst so far this year in a country grimly accustomed to atrocities, and will further undermine fractious inter-religious ties in the Muslim-majority nation.

In 2012, the Government of Pakistan awarded Chinoy the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian honour of the country.

Egypt Passenger Plane Hijacked & Forced To Land In Cyprus

egypt-air hijacked

A hijacker seized an Egyptian airliner on Tuesday and diverted it to Cyprus, triggering a hostage crisis at Larnaca airport on the south coast, Cypriot police said.

Egyptian civil aviation said the hijacker had threatened to detonate an explosives belt. The hijacker contacted the control tower at 8:30 am (0530 GMT) and the plane was given permission to land at 8:50 am, Cyprus police said.

A crisis team was deployed to the airport, the main entry point for tourists to the Mediterranean resort island. The hijacker made no immediate demands and later allowed Egyptian passengers to disembark, Cypriot state television reported.

The Egypt Air plane was headed from the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria to Cairo with 81 passengers on board when it was seized, Egyptian civil aviation said.

The airline tweeted: “Our Flight MS181 is officially hijacked, we’ll publish an official statement now.”

Larnaca is no stranger to hostage crises. Several hijacked planes were diverted to the airport in the 1970s and 1980s.

A hijacker who diverted an Egypt Air plane to Cyprus on Tuesday threatened to detonate an explosive vest which he said he had on board, the Egyptian civil aviation ministry said.

“The Airbus A-320 carrying 81 passengers and flying between Alexandria and Cairo was hijacked. The pilot said that a passenger told him he had an explosives vest and forced the plane to land in Larnaca,” a ministry statement said

Amitabh Bachchan’s New James Bond Look!

For a local magazine cover, Amitabh Bachan donned the ultra sharp and charming, world renown spy James Bond avatar. In his official blog, he said that it was rare that 74 year olds are approached with such opportunities.

“There is a photo shoot early morning for a magazine where they intend to replicate a certain Mr. Bond… Surrounded by a bevy of beauties which I may add seems far too incongruous than any situation… But what the heck… Let’s face it… It is not too often that a 74-year-old shall get such opportunity… so INDULGE !!!”

Singer Nouman Javaid Attempts Suicide?

Rumor has it that the popular Pakistani singer, Nouman Javaid has allegedly attempted suicide and is currently fighting for his life in ICU at Ittefaq hospital, Lahore. He was recently in the news for his intimate nikkah with the singer Fariha Parvaiz.

The 34-year-old singer was brought to Ittefaq hospital on Friday night, immediately getting admitted in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to Express Tribune, undergoing intense surgery and treatment, Nouman was then discharged Sunday night.

Even though several friends in the industry term the incident a suicidal attempt since he was struggling in personal life, the administrative staff at the hospital agreed otherwise and said it was just an accident.

“We can’t give you any details about how it happened, all we can tell you is that he was hospitalised in our facility for two days, due to severe injuries and has now been discharged,” said an administrative staff member at the hospital.

Ont the other hand, a source from the nursing staff confirmed Javaid’s friends’ suspicion and stated that the suicide was being held a secret as his family requested it.

“It was a clear case of suicide but no one has been allowed say anything in this matter. It was treated like a suicide case and nothing else,” said a nusring staff member at the Ittefaz hospital.

Javaid’s family denied all kinds of speculations related to his suicide and refused to provide any details on the accident. “It is a strictly private matter and my father has not allowed me to say anything to anyone. I am sorry I can’t even tell you the name of the hospital,” his sister said while speaking to The Express Tribune.

No one is aware of the real reason behind his suicide attempt; however, his official facebook page was recently filled with paranoid updates which may have been the reason for this shocking action.

Some say the singer had a mental breakdown and attempted to kill himself.

nouman-javaid

His last update was quite a depressing one where he highlighted, how shallow the people were around him. He has always been very prompt when it comes to responding to his fans, however, this time, he did not respond to any of their comments which did seem a bit off.

The eye-catching update was the one posted on 26 March, where he might have indicated of his suicide plan.

Internet star Qandeel Baloch has pleaded for Indian citizenship. In her latest tweet, the model has said she is ‘very disappointed from Pakistan’. Baloch has hashtagged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a journalist Puneet Shukla in her tweet.

The star faced severe backlash on social media. Baloch has been caught in controversies several times in the past for her bold videos and statements.

The actor is getting popularity across the border, compelling Indian media and celebrities to talk about her. She is referred to as ‘Pakistan’s Poonam Pandey’ in India. The actor has recently been supported by singer Sonu Nigam.

Mobile Phone Service Stay Suspended In Islamabad/Rawalpindi

mobile-phone-service-suspended

On the directive given by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, mobile network services have been suspended for short spans of time in a few regions of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

This measure was enforced after PTA received orders from the Interior Ministry concerning the security of Islamabad. The network operators shut down the services around 5 am today and was later blocked again after being restored in the sensitive regions.

NO-SIGNAL

Both PTA and the service operators are strictly advised against sharing the timetable and the area names where the service is due to be blocked given security threats.

These measures were taken after protesters gathered in D Chowk in the capital; until the government decides to deal with this situation, the mobile network service suspension remains indefinite.

With mobile network suspended, the citizens of Islamabad have been facing quite a lot of technical difficulties and communication problems.

Sunil Gupta talks Branding and Advertising

At the jury session for PAS Awards 2016, we caught up with Mr Sunil Gupta who was visiting from India to join the team that will select the top Pakistani brand for 2015. Mr Gupta has a 30-year rich experience in advertising and is currently running his own consultancy in brand communication, Igniva Consulting.

Since the revival of Pakistani cinema, branded content has gained popularity with some examples of brand placement being Cornetto in the film Karachi Se Lahore, Sprite in ‘Dekh Magar Pyar Se” and Coke in Ho Mann Jahan. At times the brand seems to hijack the content and the communication message appears forced on the viewers.

“ Brand placement in communication has always taken place. What needs to be understood is why brands use brand ambassadors and branded content in the first place. “ According to Mr Gupta “ when the brand is thrust in their face it can create a negative effect. Brands need to weave it in as a natural inclusion”. He mentions that research supports that customers actually shy away when brands are aggressively pushed towards them .

[youtube id=”kG12hYWYWqw”]

In India he sites the example of how Pepsi had creatively used film stars and cricketers as brand endorsers. He emphasises the fact that brands needs to resonate with the audience and the Pepsi ad with Shahrukh and Sachin Tendulkar manages to do just that. “It is important for the narrative to be built around the brand”. The ad below is an example of how this concept was used brilliantly.

Watch ad

[youtube id=”wGsOgjAQuY8″]

THE BRAND VAULE OF PSL

According to Mr Gupta, he doesn’t think that PSL can compete as a brand with IPL given the way it is structured currently.” If the game is played offshore, it will not have as much impact as being in the arena.” Till it’s actually played here in Pakistan it won’t have the same impact.

“For brands to be able to maximize value from sponsoring events like these, it is important for them to engage with their captive audience and not just provide visibility through signage – otherwise they just end up being wallpaper.”

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO DIFFERENTLY IN PAKISTAN

There is a need for a change in attitude. Mr Gupta stressed on the importance of trying different things – “ you have to have the guts to do something different to stand out”. He cited the example of the recent advertising for lawn brands. According to him all the billboards have the same visuals of women wearing prints. What is missing is the brand association built with them. Fear of not being different usually stems from a sense of insecurity. It is safer to stick to templates that everyone else uses so if something goes wrong you always have an already tried method to refer to. However always being safe sometimes curbs really creative ideas from being risked and tried out.

PAKISTANI CELEBRITIES ENDORSING INDIAN BRANDS

We have seen many Indian celebrities endorsing local brands including Kareena Kapoor for Faraz Mannan, Katrina Kaif for Lux etc, Sonam Kapoor in Tarang, Shahid Kapoor for Q mobile and the list goes on. However one has rarely seen Pakistani celebrities gracing the billboards in India. With Pakistani film stars gaining popularity through Indian films, Mr Guta expects that this trend will change. He mentions how Ali Zafar has been making waves in India being talented in both singing and acting.

“ Imran Khan had modelled for Cinthol soaps in India. If you have the charisma to make it people will accept ” (watch Imran Khan endorsing the brand in the video interview above )

THE CHANGING ADVERTSING LANDSCAPE

On asking Mr Gupta if we were to expect more in terms of digital advertising in the near future,” Digital is the biggest buzzword that is used more and understood less. “ Since it is just another medium it is important to know how to use it as allows for more engagement with the customer.”

Data about people has become easily available, and now more individually crafted communication needs to be created that is more engaging as opposed to just putting up a banner ad.

TOP BRAND 2015

The top brand award is a new category that has been introduced at the PAS Awards this year and Mr Gupta is part of the jury for this category.

We are looking for bravery and a brand who has been brave enough to do something meaningfully different by stepping out of insecurity and making a difference to the lives of their customers “

Mr Gupta is also a writer having penned down his 23 year journey in the word of advertising in his book ‘Living on the “adge” in Jhande Walan Thompson’. He is also a sports commentator and actor.

Junaid Jamshed Gets Celebrities’ Support After Airport Attack

Singer-turned religious scholar, Junaid Jamshed, was assaulted at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Islamabad in the early hours on Sunday. Protestors chanted slogans for Junaid and started hitting him, claiming that he has committed blasphemy.

Islamabad Turmoil Rises, Army Called to Take Control in Red Zone

Army-Islamabad-Tension

The situation in the capital city has grown worse and the Pakistan Army has been called in to control the rising tension in Islamabad. The city police and Rangers failed to control the charged crowd protesting against the hanging of Mumtaz Qadri.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army has been called in to guard the Red Zone as the charged mob had earlier breached the Red Zone security and entered the highly guarded zone.

Earlier, the charged mob had breached the highly guarded Red Zone. The angry mob also set ablaze the Metrobus station in Islamabad and also torched at least three motorcycles parked inside the station along with containers blocking roads.

The militant elements are busy harming the public property while the series of breaking and entering in various shops is also ongoing.

Thousands of supporters of an executed Islamist assassin were holding a sit-in in Islamabad Monday after submitting a list of demands including the execution of a female Christian blasphemy convict.

Mumtaz Qadri was hanged on February 29 for killing a Punjab governor over his call for blasphemy reform, in what analysts said was a “key moment” in Pakistan’s long battle against religious extremism.

But it also exposed deep religious divisions in the conservative Muslim country of 200 million.

An estimated 25,000 supporters of Qadri, a former police bodyguard, forced their way into the capital from its twin-city Rawalpindi, where they had gathered Sunday afternoon to offer prayers.

By evening, they were engaged in violent clashes with police and paramilitary troops, who used heavy tear-gas shelling in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent them from pushing closer to the city centre.

On Monday, around 3,000 protesters, many carrying sticks, remained at the city’s main Constitution Avenue close to key government buildings, including the presidency and parliament, which were guarded by soldiers.

Protest leaders were making speeches on a makeshift stage, as supporters drank tea from plastic bags and washed themselves using water bottles.

Their demands include the execution of Asia Bibi, a Christian mother-of-five who has been on death row since she was convicted in 2010 of committing blasphemy during an argument with a Muslim woman over a bowl of water.

They are also calling for Qadri to be officially declared a “martyr” and want the immediate imposition of Sharia law.

The federal government has declined to respond to any of the demands, and the stand-off is ongoing.

Sit-ins, or “dharnas”, are a popular form of political protest in Pakistan.

The protest came as a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up in a park crowded with families celebrating Easter in the city of Lahore, killing at least 72 people, nearly half of whom were children.

Lahore Blast 2016 Condemned By World Leaders

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday condemned an Easter Day suicide bombing in Pakistan that killed at least 65 people and injured hundreds more, calling it an “appalling” act of terrorism.

“The secretary general strongly condemns the suicide bombing today at Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park in the Pakistani city of Lahore,” a UN statement said.

“The secretary general calls for the perpetrators of this appalling terrorist act to be brought swiftly to justice, consistent with human rights obligations.”

The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber who blew himself  up in the crowded Pakistani park as Christians were celebrating Easter, Christendom’s holiest day.

Ban called on the Islamabad government “to do its utmost to put in place protective measures to ensure the personal security of all individuals, including religious minority communities living in the country.”

The UN secretary-general added that he “extends his heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, and expresses his solidarity with the people and government of Pakistan.”

Other world leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Canada, Justin Trudeau and the Turkish President Erdogan have all condemned the terrible attack and loss of innocent lives in the heinous incident.

US condemned it as a “cowardly” act, while UN Secretary General expressed his sorrow over the blast

Officials said the toll was expected to rise after the blast that counted numerous children among the casualties.

Explosives packed with ball bearings ripped through crowds near a children’s play area in the park in Lahore, leaving dozens dead or bloodied.

ICC World T20 2016: Australia Praises World T20 “Virat Show”

Australian commentators were full of praise for Virat Kohli’s thrilling batting on Monday, even though his heroic 82 sent Steve Smith’s team crashing out of the World T20.

India triumphed in the do-or-die showdown in Mohali as they successfully ran down Australia’s 160 for 6 to win with five balls to spare as Kohli put on a batting masterclass.

“Steve Smith called it the ‘Virat show’ and he was right,” wrote Chris Barratt in The Sydney Morning Herald, acknowledging the dejected skipper’s post-match remarks.

“With one of the greatest ever Twenty20 international innings India’s batting maestro all but single-handedly sent Australia home from the 20-overs world championship.”

“One man wins it,” agreed The Daily Telegraph’s Ben Horne as he described the match which crushed Australia’s hopes of a World T20 title and puts India through to the semi-finals.

ICC T20 World Cup 2016: Schedule & Match Fixtures

“I think it’s safe to say there is no talent in world cricket at the moment quite like Virat Kohli,” Horne said in a podcast.

Writing in The Australian newspaper, Gideon Haigh said Kohli’s unbeaten 82 off 51 balls had “made an awkward chase look like simplicity itself”.

“Not a stroke, by the way, would have looked out of place in a Test match,” he wrote.

“Much as the marketers would like to take the cricket out of T20, Kohli keeps putting it back.”

While Geoff Lemon, writing for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said it was hard to feel disappointed at being knocked out by such an impressive innings.

“It is hard to feel anything but awe,” he wrote.

Cricketing greats also heaped praise on Kohli, who with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni put on 67 runs to take the team to the finish line.

“Wow, that was absolute class from Virat. Congrats India on your win,” tweeted spin master Shane Warne.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke added: “Looked like a class performance from @imVkohli#T20WorldCup“.

Two iconic superheroes zapped the opposition as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” leapt to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend with $170.

That mammoth haul made it the best March launch ever and the sixth-biggest domestic opening weekend of all-time, the industry journal Variety said.

Starring Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill in the role of Superman, the characters’ first big-screen pairing sets up the coming “Justice League” and “Wonder Woman” movies.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Reaps $7 million At Global Box Office

A stellar cast for the Warner Bros blockbuster also features former Miss Israel Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as the eccentric villain Lex Luthor and Amy Adams as Superman’s love interest Lois Lane.

The movie had been eagerly anticipated among the legion of fans of the superhero genre and they poured into cinemas for the Easter weekend, according to estimates from industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The initial success of “Batman v Superman,” which comes despite some decidedly negative reviews, easily relegated the animated Disney film “Zootopia” into second in the box office standings.

The movie, about an intrepid rabbit police officer who works with a fox to solve a crime in the Zootopia animal kingdom, pulled in $23.1 million from Friday to Sunday for a total of $240.5 million in its four weeks at cinemas.
Third was another new entry, the comedy sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” with $18.1 million on its debut weekend.

Looking to build on the success of the original film in 2002, the follow-up brings the Portokalos family back for — yes, you guessed it — an even bigger wedding.

Roughly tied at fourth and fifth at the box office, both with about $9.5 million, were “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” and the feel-good “Miracles from Heaven.”
Rounding out the rest of the top 10 were:
— “10 Cloverfield Lane” ($6 million)
— “Deadpool” ($5 million)
— “London Has Fallen” ($3 million)
— “Hello, My Name is Doris” ($1.7 million)
— “Eye in the Sky” ($1 million)
