Uber Officially Launched in Karachi: All You Need To Know

The much awaited Family Profiles feature allows all the family members to use Uber with only one payment source. Currently, this new feature is only available to the people of Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix but soon the feature is to roll out everywhere else as well.

How ‘Family Profiles’ Works

Up to ten Uber riders can be a part of the ‘Family Profile’ and each family requires an organizer which is the sole payment source. Every time a family member takes an Uber ride, the bill will be charged; the organizer will receive a receipt for every ride taken by the family member.

Uber-Family-Profiles.Brandsynario

The organizer will send an invitation to the family members and they just have to click the link sent to their email; by doing so they’ll be added to the family. Family members have to select the new Family Profile as payment method only once when the first time they take a ride after been added to the Family Profile, after that it becomes the default payment option.

Uber Family Profiles are not confined to actual families; even companies can add up their employees in a family profile and manage their commute payment via a single organizer’s account.

The star also hosted a series of non-magic shows throughout the 1980s and 90s, including “Odd One Out” and “Wipeout.”

Dengue Virus Vaccine Is 100 Percent Effective: Study

Dengue-virus-Vaccine

An experimental vaccine against dengue, the world’s most common mosquito-borne virus, was 100 percent effective in early trials and could speed up the pace of a vaccine against Zika, researchers said Wednesday.

Dengue — which is in the same family of flaviviruses as Zika — infects some 390 million people each year in more than 120 countries of the world.

Dengue symptoms are often mild, but more than two million people annually develop dengue hemorrhagic fever — which can involve severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, rash, pain in the joints, muscles or bones pain, and leaking blood vessels.

More than 25,000 people die of dengue hemorrhagic fever each year.

“Knowing what we know about this new vaccine, we are confident that it is going to work,” said lead author Anna Durbin, associate professor in International Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

“And we have to be confident: Dengue is unique and if you don’t do it right, you can do more harm than good.”

Dengue infects some 390 million people each year in more than 120 countries of the world.

Four strains

The vaccine candidate, known as TV003, was tested in a group of 48 people — half of whom received the vaccine, with the other half given a placebo.

TV003 is made by researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) from a mixture of four weakened but live viruses, targeted to each of the four serotypes of dengue.

Google & UNICEF Unite To Eliminate Zika Virus Spread

Six months after vaccination, the two groups were exposed to a weakened form of dengue serotype 2 virus, the hardest of the four dengue strains to prevent.

Previous research on TV003, which has been in development for 15 years, had shown it worked well at preventing dengue 1, 3 and 4 viruses.

However, the “portion of the vaccine that was designed to prevent dengue 2 did not induce as strong an immune response in people as the other three components,” said a statement from Johns Hopkins.

This time, researchers looked beyond antibody response “for the evidence of actual infection: virus in the blood, rash and low white blood cell count.”

Of the 41 people that remained in the study until the end, none of the 21 who were vaccinated showed any evidence of dengue.

The 20 in the placebo group all had dengue virus in their blood. Eighty percent of them developed a rash, and 20 percent showed lower white blood cell counts, suggesting their bodies were fighting an infection.

The study was done in the United States, where dengue does not circulate in the population.

This helped researchers identify the vaccine’s effectiveness in people who had not been previously exposed to any strain of dengue.

“The findings from this trial are very encouraging to those of us who have spent many years working on vaccine candidates to protect against dengue, a disease that is a significant burden in much of the world and is now endemic in Puerto Rico,” said Stephen Whitehead, of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

A larger, phase III trial of TV003 began last month in Brazil. It is one of several candidate vaccines currently in clinical trials.

Zika virus

Researchers said their findings may assist in the development of a vaccine against Zika, which has been linked to surge in birth defects in Brazil.

Top US health experts have said a vaccine against the mosquito-borne disease will take years to develop.

“We think that this is a tool that can really accelerate vaccine development, it’s a tool that we think can be extrapolated to others flaviviruses,” said Durbin.

“We hope to do this with Zika virus. There’s an urgent need for a Zika vaccine.”

Australia Vs New Zealand World T20 2016: Live Updates & Highlights

UPDATE: New Zealand beat Australia by 8 runs in World T20. Australia restricted New Zealand to 142/8 in their World Twenty20 match in Dharamsala Friday, with the Black Caps failing to capitalise on a blistering opening partnership.

After Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson put on 61 in the first seven overs, the Black Caps had appeared poised to put on a score close to 200 in Dharamsala.

But poor shot selection and tight bowling from the veteran Shane Watson and allrounders Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner put the brakes on the big-hitting side who pulled off a shock victory over India in their opening match of the tournament.

Australia surprisingly left out batsman Aaron Finch and paceman Josh Hazlewood, calling up spin duo Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar, as they seek to win the trophy for the first time.

The selection backfired as Agar went for three sixes in what was his one and only over. His first two balls were full tosses, gratefully dispatched over the ropes by Guptill.

But Agar later made amends by catching both skipper Williamson and Corey Anderson in quick succession, both taken after they miscued expansive strokes.

Guptill was the first to go after racing to 39 off 27 balls, caught on the boundary by Maxwell off the bowling of Faulkner as he tried to go for another six at the beginning of the eighth over.

New Zealand never recovered their momentum and no batsman ever really looked settled on what proved to be a slow pitch.

Watson’s first three overs yielded just 11 runs and he took the key wicket of Ross Taylor in his final over, one ball after being hit for six by the former Kiwi captain.

The big-hitting Maxwell also impressed in his three overs which went for 18.

New Zealand spinner Nathan McCullum made way for Mitchell McClenaghan despite playing a leading role during the Black Caps’ shock opening victory over hosts India on Tuesday.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat in their World Twenty20 tie against Australia in Dharamsala on Friday.

New Zealand spinner Nathan McCullum made way for Mitchell McClenaghan despite playing a leading role during the Black Caps’ shock opening victory over hosts India on Tuesday.

Australia elected to play two spinners, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, with paceman Josh Hazlewood missing out in what is the team’s opening match in a tournament they have never won.

Australia will be taking on New Zealand in a Group 2 encounter in Dharamshala on Friday. Australia begins their latest quest Friday to clinch the elusive crown of World Twenty20 champions against a New Zealand side who are on a high after their stunning victory over tournament hosts India.

Steve Smith’s side top the Test rankings and won their fifth 50 over World Cup last year by crushing New Zealand in the final in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

But for all their dominance in the older formats, Australia have struggled in 20 over cricket and have only once made the final of the World T20, back in 2010 when they lost to England.

View all the latest match updates below:

Veteran all-rounder Shane Watson said Australia would not hold back from reminding their trans-Tasman rivals about the outcome of last year’s World Cup when they meet again in Friday’s match in Dharamsala.

But he acknowledged the Black Caps would be no pushovers this time and would be full of confidence after their shock 47-run victory over red-hot favourites Indian Tuesday.

australia-vs-NZ

“We are going to have to play very well because they are going to be very confident leading into this game,” Watson told reporters in the Himalayan hill town which is home to the Dalai Lama.

A 3-0 home defeat to India in January underlined Australia’s frailties in T20 cricket although there have been encouraging signs earlier last month when they beat South Africa 2-1 away.

In Johannesburg, Glenn Maxwell spanked a career-best 75 off 43 balls in a world record fourth-wicket stand of 161 with David Warner, highlighting an all rounder’s growing importance to the team.

“Glenn Maxwell is a huge player in our team,” said Watson.

“The way he bats, whether the ball is turning or whether it’s not turning, his array of shots when he gets into his innings is incredible. He hits the ball around the ground.”

Maxwell is also expected to be busy bowling his off-breaks against a side who struggled against India‘s spinners.

New Zealand spinners Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Nathan McCullum shared nine wickets against the Indians, leaving the selectors with a headache over whether to bring back pacemen Trent Boult or Tim Southee.

Coach, Mike Hesson has been trying to keep the team’s feet on the ground since the India win, telling New Zealand radio that qualification for the semis in a pool that also includes Pakistan and Bangladesh is a tough ask.

“Great start for us but we know that even just getting out of the pool is going to be incredibly difficult,” he told Newstalk ZB.

Pope Francis to Make Instagram Debut on Saturday

Pope Francis will make his Instagram debut on Saturday, joining the likes of Justin Bieber and Cristiano Ronaldo on the image-sharing forum under the handle Franciscus, the Vatican confirmed Wednesday.

The date for the pontiff’s debut on the celebrity-dominated social medium was chosen by the 79-year-old himself as it marks the third anniversary of his inauguration as the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

The move represents the latest plank of a Vatican social media strategy designed to ensure Francis’s message reaches a maximum number of believers and non-believers across the world with particular focus on the younger generation.

Francis is already a major player on Twitter. Under the @Pontifex handle he tweets in nine languages, including Latin, with the English account followed by nearly nine million people and the Spanish one by more than 11 million.

The move to join Instagram has been anticipated for some time as it is now bigger and faster-growing than Twitter with some 400 million users worldwide.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s CEO and co-founder, met the pontiff at the Vatican last month, later revealing they had discussed “the power of images to unite people across different cultures and languages.”

In a post on his own Instagram account, Systrom also said: “It was by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life!”

Francis joined the Twittersphere four days after his March 2013 election with what has become his trademark appeal to believers to “pray for me.”

The central importance of prayer has been a recurring theme of the tweets that have followed, at a rate of a little under one a day.

000_8s97e.d1f23132956.w600

Some have been barely comprehensible to non-Catholics such as: “The Sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist, are privileged places of encountering Christ.”

But it has not all been theology. He has also used the medium to react to global events like Typhoon Hiayan/Yolanda, or voice his views on the social issues of the day.

Francis has also demonstrated a nice line in homespun tips for living, such as: “I cannot imagine a Christian who does not know how to smile.”

To date however his Twitter feed has been short on images with only two photographs and one short video clip uploaded.

And given that he nearly always wears the same clothes and spends most of his time in one place, generating an interesting photo stream for Instagram will present some challenges for his media team.

On the upside, Francis does have a steady flow of interesting visitors, he gets to some remote places and he does have exclusive access to the artistic treasures of the Vatican museums.

Francis’s interest in the Internet was underlined in January when he spoke out against online trolls. He has also hosted major figures in the new digital economy, including Google boss Eric Schmidt and Apple supremo Tim Cook.

Nike Unveils Self-Tying Shoes Inspired By ‘Back To The Future’ Movie

2015-Nike-Mag

US sporting goods giant Nike unveiled Wednesday its first shoe that ties itself, the HyperAdapt 1.0, which will go on sale at the end of 2016. Sensors at the heel level activate the lacing when a foot slips into the shoe. Two buttons on the side of the shoe can be pressed to loosen or tighten the lacing.

Nike calls the feature “adaptive lacing.” Nike‘s star designer Tinker Hatfield said at the New York presentation that the company is working on other innovations that will provide automatic adjustments.

Britain to Impose Sugar Tax on Soft Drinks to Cut Obesity

Britain will impose a tax on excessive sugar levels in soft drinks, starting in two years’ time, to cut down on spiraling childhood obesity levels, finance minister George Osborne said Wednesday.

“I can announce that we will introduce a new sugar levy on the soft drinks industry,” Osborne said, adding that the tax would be on drinks with more than five grammes of sugar per 100 milliliters.

“We all know one of the biggest contributors to childhood obesity is sugary drinks.”

“I am not prepared to look back at my time here in this parliament, doing this job and say to my children’s generation, ‘I’m sorry. We knew there was a problem with sugary drinks. We knew it caused disease but we ducked the difficult decisions’.”

Britain has some of the worst obesity rates in Europe.

Official data from last year showed 61.9 percent of British adults and 28 percent of children aged between two and 15 are overweight or obese.

“We did it!” celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who has long campaigned for a sugar tax, said on Instagram.

“A profound move that will ripple around the world,” he wrote.

Shares in soft drinks producers plunged after the announcement.

A.G. Barr, producer of the popular Scottish drink Irn Bru, dropped 5.4 percent, while squash maker Britvic fell 2.9 percent. Health experts welcomed the new tax.

Professor Isabelle Szmigin from the University of Birmingham said: “It is really important that the government is taking seriously the sugar issue and its links to obesity.”

“The challenge now will be whether the large soft drinks manufacturers will reform the contents of their products, rather than simply raising prices,” she said.

Osborne said the tax would have two bands — drinks with more than five and eight grammes per 100 milliliters — and was estimated to raise £520 million a year (661 million euros, $732 million).

The money raised would be used to fund sports activities in schools, Osborne said. He said the delay in implementation would “give companies plenty of time to change their product mix”.

Anne Frank’s Signed Storybook Up For Auction in New York

A book of fairy tales owned and signed by German-born Jewish diarist Anne Frank before she perished in the Holocaust will go on sale in New York valued at $20,000 to $30,000, an auction house said Wednesday.

The well-worn edition of Grimm’s fairy tales in German, which includes favorites Snow White and Hansel and Gretel, belonged to Frank and her sister Margot before they went into hiding in 1942 to escape the Nazis.

Frank wrote her name and that of her sister on the fly leaf, said Swann Auction Galleries, which will conduct the sale on May 5. The book will go on public display in its New York showroom on May 2.

The handwriting matches other samples written by Anne Frank, said the auction house. The inside cover of the book is stamped in purple with the initials MF.

It was not known when Frank acquired the book, nor when she signed it. She was born in Frankfurt in 1929 and her sister in 1926. The family moved to Amsterdam in the mid-1930s to escape the Nazis.

The book was published in 1925 in Vienna.

“What just infuses it with so much incredible emotion and history and potential value is the fact that it is signed by Anne Frank. It was her personal copy,” said Nicholas Lowry, president of Swann Auction Galleries.

000_was20030612.5bc46152314.w600

Anne Frank’s diary, which she wrote in hiding, was published two years after she died, aged 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945, just two months before the Nazis were defeated.

It has sold more than 30 million copies and been translated from the original Dutch into 67 languages.

Source of inspiration

The teenager also wrote short stories while living in a secret annex with her family and four other Jews until they were betrayed in August 1944.

“This book, a book of Grimms fairy tales, was very likely the well source of all of her inspiration,” said Lowry. “This book really is the springboard from which her nascent literary career and dreams of being a writer were launched.”

Lowry said the pre-sale estimate of the book was $20,000 to $30,000. The well-thumbed volume has 148 pages and is illustrated with black silhouettes. It has some dog-eared pages and a few ink stains.

“There’s no real way of knowing exactly how much it’s going to sell for,” Lowry told AFP. “But the estimate that we’ve put on it, I think, reflects that we’re going to let the market decide.”

Swann Auction Galleries said it is only the third piece of Anne Frank holograph material to come to public sale and the first in nearly 30 years.

In 1988, Swann sold letters and postcards written by the Frank sisters to pen pals in the United States for $165,000.

In 1989, Christie’s sold a verse inscription signed “Anne Frank” for $35,200.

The book, which was left behind when the family went into hiding, was bought in a bookshop by a family who only realized its progeny in the 1970s, when they wrote to Frank’s father Otto offering to return it, Lowry said.

A letter from Otto, the only person from the annex to survive the war, urging them to keep it in 1977, is being sold with the book.

England vs South Africa World T20 2016: Live Updates & Highlights

England need a win against South Africa Friday after defeat in their opening World Twenty20 match while the Proteas want to get their bid for a first international trophy off to a strong start.

Captain Eoin Morgan’s England side were blown away by a Chris Gayle century at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday night as the West Indies won by six wickets.

Morgan will be looking for more from his batsmen after they fell short of his target of 200, finishing on 182 for six, and from his bowling attack who he said performed at around 80-90 percent.

The English skipper rued losing the toss to West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who opted to field, and Morgan feels the game of chance will again play a big part on Friday in Mumbai’s humid conditions.

“It was a lot more dewy tonight and the ball got a lot more wet. But certainly we’re better for playing in it,” he said following the opening Super 10 Group 1 defeat.

“Even at the toss I said I was going to chase so it could be a big part for me in the South Africa game,” Morgan added.

The captain said before the tournament that he would use all 15 squad members at his disposal, and replacing David Willey with powerful fast bowler Liam Plunkett is a likely switch for Friday’s do-or-die contest.

Morgan said he treated every match as “a must-win game” and the next encounter is no different as a second defeat would all but end England’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals.

For South Africa the night match marks the start of their quest to once and for all remove the chokers tag that skipper Faf du Plessis admits has become “a monkey on the back” of their team.

Since their readmission in 1991 after the apartheid era ban, the Proteas have been the nearly men of world cups in both T20 and 50 over cricket, falling agonizingly short of the final on several occasions.

Despite their failure to win a major trophy, South Africa are one of the tournament favourites and are currently in third place in the T20 world rankings.

“The only way you can get rid of that (the chokers’ tag) is to perform under pressure,” du Plessis said last week.

“I think it’s fair but the only way you will ever get that monkey off your back is if you do win a trophy,” added the 31-year-old batsman.

Frank Sinatra Jr. Dies of Heart Attack At 72

Frank Sinatra, Jr. died of a heart attack on Wednesday while on tour in the US state of Florida, his sister Nancy said. He was 72.

“The Sinatra family mourn the untimely passing of their son, brother, father, uncle Frank Sinatra, Jr. of cardiac arrest while in tour in Daytona, Florida,” Nancy Sinatra said in a statement posted on Facebook. “Sleep warm, Frankie.”

Sinatra followed his famous father’s footsteps into the music business, beginning his singing career in his teens. Starting in 1988, Sinatra served as conductor and musical director for his father in his final years of performing live.

Frank Sinatra, Sr., the Rat Pack star of the 1960s, died in 1998.

Sinatra was meant to perform at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida on Wednesday night as part of the “Sinatra Sings Sinatra” tour.

frank-sinatra-jr

The theater announced his death on its Facebook page, after posting earlier in the evening that the show was cancelled because the singer had fallen ill after arriving in town.

The younger Sinatra might be best remembered for being kidnapped at age 19 by a pair of young men hoping to extort money from his famous father.

Sinatra was taken by gunpoint from Harrah’s Casino in Lake Tahoe, California on December 8,1963, and held for a few days until his father paid the $240,000 ransom. He was released unharmed.

Tony Bennett, an old friend of the elder Sinatra, expressed his condolences to the family.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Sinatra Jr and send my sympathy to Tina and Nancy and the Sinatra family,” he said on Twitter.

Chris Gayle said he had been on a mission to entertain after his scorching century propelled the West Indies to a six-wicket win against England in their World Twenty20 opener Wednesday.

The powerful left-hander smashed 11 sixes and five fours as the Windies successfully chased down England’s score of 182 for six at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and then revealed that he had been inspired by an appeal from one of his team-mates.

England posted a challenging score of 182 for six after West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to field in their World Twenty20 opener in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Joe Root top-scored for England with a tidy 48, including two exquisite sixes, off 36 balls at the western Indian city’s Wankhede Stadium.

England skipper Eoin Morgan had promised his charges would bat aggressively but they looked nervy in the opening stages and took their time getting runs on the board.

They posted just five runs in the opening two overs before openers Jason Roy and Alex Hales began to get into their groove as England reached 36/0 after four overs.

But right-handed batsman Roy was expertly caught at midwicket in the fifth over for 15 by a diving Samuel Badree off Andre Russell, sporting an orange mohawk hairstyle.

Hales and number three Root then struck up a healthy partnership as England quickened their run-rate, reaching 81 for one after 10 overs.

The partnership was at 55 runs when six foot seven inches left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn bowled Hales in the 12th over with England’s opener having made 28.

Root then went when he miss-hit a Russell delivery straight to Jerome Taylor, who pouched the ball with ease at mid-off.

Jos Buttler made 30, including three sixes, before being caught by Carlos Brathwaite in the deep, while Morgan scored 27 not out as England finished their 20 overs on 182 for six.

World T20 2016: Darren Sammy Backs Andre Russell Over Drug Test Report

West Indies captain Darren Sammy on Tuesday backed team-mate Andre Russell to star at the World Twenty20 after reports the all-rounder could face a suspension for missing three drugs tests.

Russell, 27, could be banned for two years if found guilty by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) of missing the tests over the past 12 months, recent media reports in Jamaica said.

“We as a team have supported Russell,” Sammy told reporters in Mumbai a day ahead of the West Indies’ opening World T20 clash against England at the city’s Wankhede Stadium.

“We are confident he will be taking part in the full tournament and having an impact like he’s done in the last four tournaments he’s played (in) around the world,” Sammy added.

Failing to be available for a test is regarded as the equivalent of testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, meaning Russell faces a long spell on the sidelines if his violation is confirmed.

The right-handed batsman has not incurred any sanctions or suspensions from his home cricket board, meaning he is free to play in the sixth edition of the World T20 in India.

Russell has played only one full Test for the West Indies, against Sri Lanka in 2010, but has carved out a cricket career as a sought after all-rounder in abbreviated versions of the game.

He has regularly played in the West Indies one-day squads and has also enjoyed stints with various T20 sides in India, Australia and Pakistan.

The West Indies’ preparations for the World T20 have been dogged by a series of withdrawals and a bitter pay dispute and Sammy said the reports surrounding Russell hadn’t affected the squad.

“We always have setbacks,” he said.

“We thrive on things like that to use that as motivation to go out and play our sport really well.”

The West Indies will also play South Africa, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the group stages as they bid to add a second World T20 title to the one they won in 2012.

The #ProfileforPeace drive not only cleared the air between the tensed fans of the two countries but also proved that cricket can unite people across the border. It reflected that hatred can not win over the emotions of love and goodwill these countries hold for one another.

Denmark is The World’s Happiest Place – AGAIN!

Denmark has reclaimed the title of world’s happiest country, bumping Switzerland to second place in this year’s edition of the UN’s World Happiness Report.

Released to coincide with World Happiness Day on March 20, the UN released the fourth edition of the index which ranks 156 countries by their “happiness levels.”

After losing the title to Switzerland last year, Denmark stole back the crown of world’s happiest country — a title it’s claimed three out of four years.

New this year, the report also took into consideration the “inequality” of happiness and well-being among citizens. Dominating the top 10 list are Nordic and Scandinavian countries, with Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden taking up half the spots.

istock_00008664.2de7c113637.w600

To compile the ranking, editors considered the GDP per capita; the healthy years of life expectancy; social support; trust (measured by a perceived absence of corruption in government and business); freedom to make life decisions; generosity (measured by donations); and new this year, happiness inequality.

Because after studying rates of distribution, editors say they found a correlation between countries with more equal distributions of well-being and higher life evaluations.

Happiness is argued to serve as a better indication of human welfare than income, poverty, education, health and good government when measured separately.

The importance of making happiness and well-being a matter of public policy has also been recognized by four national governments: Bhutan, Ecuador, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela have all appointed ministers of happiness.

Denmark has repeatedly taken the top spot in happiness and life satisfaction rankings be it the UN or the OECD, thanks in part to generous parental leave policies, gender equality, work-life balance, and safety.

Here are the world’s top 10 happiest countries:

  1. Denmark
  2. Switzerland
  3. Iceland
  4. Norway
  5. Finland
  6. Canada
  7. Netherlands
  8. New Zealand
  9. Australia
  10. Sweden

Landing at the bottom of the World Happiness Report index are Burundi, Syria and Togo.
