Pakistan Vs UAE Asia Cup 2016: Pakistan Beat UAE By 7 Wickets

Pakistan-vs UAE lead

UPDATE: Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal each scored a half-century as Pakistan survived an early innings jitters to beat the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by seven wickets in the Asia Cup in Dhaka on Monday.

Set a modest target after their  bowlers had restricted the UAE to 129-6, Pakistan lost three wickets in 17 runs before Malik and Akmal saw them home with solid batting.

Malik made 63 off 49 balls while Akmal added 50 off 46 balls as the pair added 114 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket partnership to steer Pakistan to 131-3 with eight balls to spare.

UAE captain Amjad Javed took all three Pakistan wickets as he trapped Sharjeel Khan leg-before for four before inducing an edge from Khurram Manzoor’s bat for a duck in his first over.

Pakistan was in danger when Mohammad Hafeez gave a catch to Fahad Tariq at cover for 11 in Javed’s next over.

But Malik and Akmal staved off a further collapse with some cautious batting mixed with calculated aggression.

“We all know the first six overs have been crucial. If you survive, then you can play shots and that is what we did,” said the man of the match Malik, who hit seven fours and three sixes.

“We lost early wickets but then we decided to forget about the run rate and focus on playing out the first six overs.

“We bowled well in the first six overs but then we were a bit all over the place, hopefully, we will talk about it.”

Shaiman Anwar made 46 off 42 balls for the UAE after the minnows suffered a similar collapse at the start of their innings.

Pakistan’s pace bowling trio of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Sami and Mohammad Irfan each claimed a wicket apiece in their respective first spell to leave the UAE struggling with 12-3.

Anwar and Usman Mushtaq offered some resistance before Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi removed Mushtaq for nine.

Anwar then launched a counter attack, first hitting debutant Mohammad Nawaz for a six and a four and then dispatching three successive deliveries of Afridi for fours.

Irfan dismissed Anwar to finish with 2-30. Amir finished with 2-6 after he bowled Mohammad Usman out for 21.

Skipper Javed remained unbeaten on 27 to give the UAE a fighting chance against the former World Twenty20 champions.

But Javed ruled a lost opportunity.

“We wanted about 120 but we got 10 runs extra,” he said.

“We knew it would be difficult to chase, we got some early wickets, but we could not capitalise on that.”

India will face Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Pakistan is all set to face the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today in the ongoing Asia Cup T20 2016 at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur; the match is the sixth match of the innings starting at 6.30 PST today, 29th February.

The men in green are quite excited to clinch their first victory of the tournament today, especially after the terrible loss to the arch-enemies India, being beaten by 5 wickets on 27th of February.

The most disappointing thing about Pakistan was their batting line that suffered against the Indian fast bowlers; many batsmen fell behind because of the lose shots. This has become a shortcoming for the Pakistani batting line. Shahid Afridi is expected to get back into form against the weaker side, UAE.

Talking about the talented batsmen in both the teams, Mohammad Hafeez has played in 72 T20 matches until now and has made 1518 runs. Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is expected to perform well in this match; however, the UAE captain Amjad Javed can also give tough competition.

Pakistan’s face paced bowler Mohammad Amir is looking forward to stun the UAE team; however UAE are hopeful regarding Mohammad Naveed who sent 19 players in 12 T20 matches to the pavilion.

Asia Cup T20 2016: Schedule, Match Fixtures & Details

In the India vs PakistanT20 Final, it was the bowling side that did exceptionally well, especially Mohammad Amir’s spell and Mohammad Sami’s beautiful bowling; Irfan and Wahab Riaz were also great support.

UAE has lost both of their previous games in the Asia Cup; therefore today’s match will be a ‘make or break’ for the team if they wish to stay in the tournament.

Dolce and Gabbana Put Fairytale Back into Fashion

Dolce and Gabbana, the designers who were once Italy’s most famous gay couple, put the fairytale back into fashion on Sunday, days after Italy’s Senate voted to legalise same-sex civil unions.

The duo must have called upon every available golden-locked model in Milan for an ode to all things princessey that was also an unabashed celebration of living happily ever after.

With the tone set by invitations which, on opening, played “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes,” from Disney’s 1950 animated version of “Cinderella”, this was a celebration of true and enduring love in all its forms.

The catwalk backdrop featured a recreation of Cinderella’s bed, a golden horse and a tapestry featuring representations of Domenico Dolce as a man and Stefano Gabbana as a woman.

“The princess was walking in the woods accompanied by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana when they met a handsome prince, riding his white horse …and they lived happily ever after … “ read the script.

Fable references abounded, commencing with the giant pumpkin and Cinderella-inspired mirror at the entrance to the converted cinema that staged the show.

The graffiti on the mirror asked, “Who is the most beautiful? YOU!” – just perfect for a self-affirming selfie.

As ever with D&G, all was not quite as it appeared. The Prince Charming in this show was a girl sporting a bolero jacket over cropped pants, one of a number of outfits with a 19th Century cavalry feels about them.

D&G fairy tale fashion show

Away from the military and piratical elements, dresses featured embroidery inspired by the mice that stitched Cinderella’s ball gown, the apple in Snow White and the clock in Alice in Wonderland.

Many of the props used were borrowed from sets belonging to Milan’s La Scala opera house with the help of the venerable institution’s own set designer Angelo Scala.

‘A different attitude’ -The idea was “to evoke a dream-like feeling in every woman,” the designers said.

“Every woman wants to be a princess deep inside, albeit a modern one, a princess that instead of waiting in her castle for her prince to come and give her the kiss of true love, is independent and looks for her prince herself.”

D&G fairy tale fashion show

In developing their vision of a new generation of princesses, D&G said they had been particularly inspired by Disney’s 2013 hit “Frozen”, a film in which the main character Elsa’s magical powers are rejected in a way some have interpreted as an allegory for society’s treatment of homosexuals.

“The new girls are not only independent but have a personal point of view: first of all, they consider themselves as individuals; what makes them different is their attitude,” the designers said.

The show culminated in a glittering finale of 95 models dressed in mid-thigh mini-dresses covered in fuchsia, silver and pink sequins and crystals.

Italy’s debate over civil unions has proved the bruising for two men who, particularly because of Dolce’s roots in socially conservative Sicily, have been pioneers as prominent gay men in Italian public life.

Dolce caused a furore last year by saying in an interview that he did not like the idea of gay couples seeking to have children through surrogacy and that he felt every child should have a mother and a father.

Gabbana disagreed but defended his former life partner’s right to his opinion, leading to accusations of betrayal from some inside the gay community and brand-damaging criticism from the likes of Elton John and Victoria Beckham.

The duo last month unveiled a line of handbags and T-shirts celebrating diverse family models in what some interpreted as an attempt to undo the impact of last year’s spat.

As things have turned out, Dolce and Gabbana’s different perspectives on gay parenthood were mirrored by broader Italian society’s reservations about allowing gays to adopt the biological children of their partners.

The bill which got through the Senate and now has to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies approves legal partnerships but does not ensure equal adoption rights for homosexuals.

Recent polls suggest 70 percent of Italians think the parliamentary fudge was the right outcome.

5 Top Moments of the 88th Oscars 2016

Many of the Oscars went to those tipped by the experts, but the evening was far from predictable, with notable surprises punctuated by powerful, emotional moments to remember.

Here are five top moments from the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday:

1. Leo’s night

They say there’s no such thing as a sure-fire winner on Oscars night, but Hollywood would surely have imploded into a singularity — prompting the heat death of the universe — if the six-time nominee (five for acting) had missed out again.

Leo wins Oscar

As it was, the 41-year-old picked up the best actor prize for his grueling star turn in survival epic “The Revenant,” and the human race lived to fight another day.

DiCaprio, finally able to deliver a winner’s speech out loud, relished the opportunity to lecture the Dolby Theatre, and a worldwide audience of several hundred million, on the evils of climate change.

2. Chris Shock

All eyes were on black comedian and actor Chris Rock, hosting for a second time despite calls for him to join a boycott sparked by the paucity of ethnic minority nominees in the acting categories.

Actor Chris Rock performs at the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26, 2012 in Hollywood, California.
Actor Chris Rock performs at the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26, 2012 in Hollywood, California.

Under pressure to hit the Academy hard over the controversy, the 51-year-old wasted no time and addressed the issue from his first words, discussing virtually nothing else in his monologue.

“Hey! Well, I’m here at the Academy Awards — otherwise known as the white People’s Choice awards,” he said, after joking that the introductory montage had at least 15 black people.

Rock was a caustic, funny presence throughout the night, but saved perhaps his most political message for his final comment: “Black lives matter” — a reference to the protest movement over the controversial police killings of African Americans.

Oscars 2016: Complete Winners’ List

3. Sly Snubbed

In one of the night’s more shocking moments, Tinseltown darling Sylvester Stallone’s dreams of a fairytale near-ending to a glittering career were dashed when he was overlooked for his supporting actor role in Rocky spin-off “Creed.”

The burly actor has carved out a place for himself in the Hollywood pantheon with a series of blockbuster performances which have been long on big paychecks but short on awards.

Sylvestor Stallone

Thirty-nine years after missing out despite writing and acting nominations for “Rocky,” Stallone found himself on the ropes again and — with the Oscar-worthy parts slowing as he approaches 70 — probably out for the count.

4. Gaga Leads Anti-Rape Rally

Amid the moments of levity, Lady Gaga’s rally against campus sexual assault, bringing together rape survivors who joined arms in solidarity, proved a powerful, somber interlude.

The pop star, who has recently spoken out about being raped as a teenager, was introduced by Vice President Joe Biden who personally took part in Hollywood’s biggest night to lend his voice to the cause.

lady gaga leads anti-rape rally

Gaga, singing to a piano and occasionally stretching her arms out with emotion, performed “Till It Happens To You” which was nominated for the Oscar for best original song for “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about rape on campus.

5. A Mexican Three-Peat

Amid the recriminations over the Oscars’ lack of diversity, a Mexican hat-trick in the best director category proved a welcome antidote.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu took home the golden statuette for “The Revenant,” repeating after his win for dark comedy “Birdman” last year.

A Mexican three-peat

Only twice has a director won back-to-back Oscars — John Ford for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “How Green Was My Valley” in the early 1940s and Joseph L. Mankiewicz for “A Letter to Three Wives” and “All About Eve,” a decade later.

Incredibly, it was three in a row for Mexico dating back to 2014, and Alfonso Cuaron’s best director triumph for space thriller “Gravity.”

Oscars 2016: Complete Winners’ List

Hollywood biggest night of the year turned, the 88th Annual Academy Awards turned even bigger as DiCaprio finally wins Oscar and’Spotlight’ grabs best film award.

Leonardo DiCaprio won his long-awaited first Oscar for revenge epic “The Revenant” Sunday but journalism drama “Spotlight” took best picture in a surprising end to Hollywood’s glittering awards season.

The night was overshadowed by a simmering race row, addressed head-on by black host Chris Rock, who delivered a series of caustic jokes targeting the Academy’s overwhelmingly white male membership.

But “Spotlight,” a searing study of The Boston Globe’s investigation into child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, unexpectedly grabbed best picture honors at the 88th Academy Awards.

Asia Cup 2016: Pakistan To Bounce Back From Pakistan vs India Loss – Shoaib Malik

Shoaib-Malik

Pakistan miscalculated the pitch in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and will learn from their mistakes after a crushing five-wicket loss to bitter rivals India, batsman Shoaib Malik said Sunday.

Pakistan were bundled out for a paltry 83 in Saturday’s crucial T20 tie against M.S. Dhoni’s side. They must win against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday to keep their Asia Cup hope alive.

The game has an added significance as it will make Pakistan the first team to play 100 Twenty20 internationals.

“Playing against India, it’s a pressure game for both the teams,” Malik said after a training session in Dhaka.

“We made some mistakes, we    didn’t know what the conditions here would be. It was tough to bat yesterday. But we miscalculated somewhat because we had no idea about the conditions,” he said.

Asia Cup T20 2016: India Beat Pakistan by 5 wickets

“Now we have played. Now we know how to deal with it. It’s going to be a great game against UAE. Obviously, you learn from your mistakes, and that’s why we are here doing practice,” Malik added.

When Pakistan defended their meagre total, Mohammad Amir generated pace and swing with pinpoint accuracy on a helpful track to leave India rattled at 8-3 inside three overs.

But Virat Kohli coolly negotiated Amir’s fiery spell to strike 49 off 51 balls and steer India home with 27 balls to spare.

Malik expressed full confidence in his bowlers and urged the batsmen to back them up.

“We know we have the best attack among all the teams. Batsmen have to take responsibility,” he said.

“Whoever gets in has to score 60-70, so your team ends up scoring 140-150, which the bowlers can defend.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Wins Oscar After 6 Nominations & 22 Years

Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagged Oscars gold on Sunday for his grueling star turn in “The Revenant,” 22 years after his first Academy Award nomination.

DiCaprio edged out Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) to take the best actor statuette.

DiCaprio won a standing ovation as he accepted the award — one of the most highly anticipated moments of the night.

He had been nominated six times in total, five of them for acting roles.

The 41-year-old film veteran thanked a long list of figures who have helped him in his career, including Martin Scorsese, before speaking on his passion — climate change.

“Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work together and stop procrastinating,” he said to applause.

“We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world,” he said.

The internet broke out in meme and posts. See a few of them below:

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy Wins 2nd Oscar Award

sharmeen-wins-another-oscar

Pakistan’s only Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has won another Academy Award for her documentary A Girl in the River, in the category Best Documentary – Short Subject.

Obaid-Chinoy previously won Pakistan’s first Academy Award for her documentary Saving Face at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in 2012. She is one of only 11 female directors who have ever won an Oscar for a non-fiction film and the only Pakistani to win two Academy Awards.

[fb_embed_post href=”https://www.facebook.com/socfilms/posts/1295605357122559/” width=”550″/]

The category of Best Documentary (Short) was presented by Louis C.K to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.

Upon receiving the award, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy said: “This is what happens when determined women get together. From Saba, the girl in my film who remarkably survived honor killing and shared her story, to Sheila Nevins, Lisa Heller from HBO and Tina Brown who supported me from day one.”

“To the men who champion women, like Geof Bartz who has edited the film to Asad Faruqi, to my friend Ziad who brought this film to the government, to all the brave men out there like my father and husband who push women to go to school and work and who want a more just society for women!”

“Last week, our Pakistani Prime Minister has said that he will change the law of honor killing after watching this film. That is the power of film!”

Wearing a floor-length black Sana Safinaz coat over a matching dress, Sharmeen had earlier walked the red carpet with her mother and the SOC Films team.

“I have another one!” said Sharmeen as she took the stage to accept the award, her second after she won an Academy Award for Saving Face in 2012.

“This week the Pakistani PM said he would change the law on honor killing after watching this film — that is the power of film!” said Sharmeen on the stage.

Sharmeen has been in Los Angeles for the past week in preparation for the Academy Awards, arguably Hollywood’s biggest night of the year.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCWfd47gdjz/

Sharmeen definitely caught the government’s attention with A Girl in the River — the film was screened at the PM House in Islamabad just last week. Following that, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that honor killing was a critical issue and voiced his government’s determination to eradicate this practice from society.

Sharmeen has gone a long way to make Pakistan proud. We wish her all the best in all her future endeavors.

Android vs iOS vs Windows Mobile: Which One Should You Buy?

Smartphones have become one essential part of everyone’s life in the present era. You would hardly see someone without a smart phone. Everybody, however, does not hold the same view about smartphones. Some prefer Android, some Windows, and some iOS.

By comparing these three operating systems, customers can better understand the pros and cons of the three. The strengths and weaknesses of these operating systems are explained below:

All three platforms are almost equal in this area. There is no clear winner as the interface of all three operating systems are colorful, stylish and elegant.

android kitkat

Windows 10 mobile has shown many improvements as compared to the previous versions and also offers an option to connect your phone to a screen, keyboard and mouse and transform into a PC.

windows-phone-8

Newer versions of Android and iOS have also shown betterment and are subtle, simple and slick.

iphone5s

Affordability and Variety

In this area, Android is the clear winner. The variety of Android phones is unmatched. Many different types of people are targeted with phones having different types of hardware.

android phones

Also, there are many companies producing Android phones but the producers of iOS or Windows Phones are limited.

Availability of Applications

Android leads this area too, but iOS is not far behind. Windows, however, is no where to be seen in this race. Compared to the vast number of apps available on Android and iOS, the apps present at Windows Store are quite less.

play-store

Also, the number of free apps in Android Playstore is higher than that of iOS or Windows.

The other benefit of Android or iOS is the rapid availability of application updates. Apps just do not get updated in Windows.

Camera

There are mixed opinions associated with this area. Some prefer IOS, some Android and some Windows. The megapixel rating of Windows Phones are higher than Android, which, in turn is higher than IOS.

iphone camera

However, there are many other factors influencing camera quality. The highest variety of modes is offered by Android. Even after their low megapixel rating, the picture quality of iPhones is unmistakable.

The best smart phone depends upon people’s preferences. Some people are interested in cameras while some value good user interface. Viewing the list above can allow you to judge each type of smart phone according to your interests and then go for the one you like the most.

Asia Cup T20 2016: India Beat Pakistan by 5 wickets

UPDATE:  India has managed to beat Pakistan easily in the end by five wickets after Mohammad Amir created some troubles for them. Man of the match Virat Kohli scored 49 in the run chase of only 84 runs that was not that easy when they came on to bat.

Its all happening here, Mohammad Amir has picked up three Indian wickets. Game is ON

Amir.Brandsynario

An extremely poor cricket show with the bat by Pakistani batsmen who got all out on 83 in the big match against India after Indian captain MS Dhoni opted to bowl first. The wickets fell like leaves after quick succession and Pakistani batsmen were did not looked promising on the pitch.

This is the third lowest total by Pakistani team in T20 Internationals.

It is all set! It is time for the ultimate Pakistan Vs India grand battle at the Micromax Asia Cup T20 2016 and now it is just a few minutes away from live action.

India and Pakistan are taking on each other after almost a year; last time they were in a face-off in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 that India won comfortably in the end. Hold on, Pakistan had also won against India when both these teams encountered each other in the Asia Cup 2014, and what a memorable victory that was. Will Shahid Afridi be able to repeat that magic again in this format, let see what happens this time.

Indian captain MS Dhoni has brought in two new bowlers in the side J Bumrah and H Pandeya and Pakistan has given a chance to debutant Khurram Manzoor and pacer Mohammad Sami.

On the cards, the Indian side is looking more experienced than Pakistan with the presence of Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Ashish Nehra, but Pakistan is relying more on their bowling department especially their pace attack that is quite strong with having Sami, Irfan, Amir and Wahab  Riaz.

MWC 2016: 6 Key Gadgets & Trends

The Mobile World Congress, the sector’s biggest trade fair which wrapped up in Barcelona on Thursday, was dominated this year by the arrival of virtual reality, advances in the development of ultra-fast 5G networks and connected objects.

Take a look at some of the key trends below:

ROBOT-TELEPHONE THAT READS YOUR MESSAGES:

Japanese firm Sharp presented a tiny prototype robot called RoBoHon that doubles as a mobile telephone.

Robohon

It has voice recognition and is able to answer questions by searching online when asked, can take pictures and read text messages you receive out loud.

HOLOGRAMS MAKE AN APPEARANCE:

Which science fiction fan has not dreamed of being able to speak to someone far away by hologram? Several firms believe this will be possible when faster 5G mobile networks are running.

Among them is US start-up Leia Inc, named after the heroine of the “Star Wars” franchise, which presented a system that creates a 3D image that appears to float above the screen of a tablet.

SK Telecom’s stand featured a beam of green light which caused different images to appear inside it such as a dolphin, a heart or a gymnast’s movement.

INVISIBLE CHARGERS:

Say good-bye to tangled wires and misplaced charging cables. Spanish start-up MiniBatt presented a smartphone charging system that can be installed in any piece of furniture, regardless of the material.

minibatt_press

To charge a device, you just have to put it on top of a desk, chair or table. The company hopes to convince furniture makers to incorporate the charger into its designs.

SMARTPHONE MAKERS BET ON VIRTUAL REALITY:

LG unveiled its new virtual reality headset, the 360 VR, which works with its new G5 smartphone. Rival South Korean firm Samsung revealed its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy 7, via a virtual reality presentation that used its Gear VR headsets.

lg_360_vr_afp

Among the most visited stand was South Korea’s SK Telecom, which offered a virtual reality ride under water in a yellow submarine, and another by Samsung featuring a virtual reality rollercoaster ride using its Gear VR headsets.

5G REMAINS KEY FOR SECTOR:

Several equipment makers and telecom operators offered demonstrations of advantages the new network will bring such as lower latency, or reaction times.

But there were no major announcements on the development of ultra-fast 5G mobile networks, due to be rolled out in 2020 following large-scale testing in 2018.

5g_phones_afp

The European Union did say it will launch an action plan to develop 5G networks and ensure Europe does not fall behind other regions as it did with the 4G network, which is in widespread use at the moment.

MORE CONNECTED OBJECTS:

Connecting appliances and other objects to the Internet is the focus of more and more discussions, despite the delays in making it happen.

Research firm Gartner forecasts that the market for Internet of Things services will top $101 billion (92 billion euros) this year, nearly 30 percent more than the $78 billion that businesses spent last year.

To Post Or Not To Post: Defiant Pakistani Teens’ Growing Dilemma

A pretty 15-year-old girl strikes a pose and pouts at the camera on her phone, so far so Generation Z, but unlike her teenage counterparts in the West, she stops short of posting the photo on social media, restricted in part by Pakistan‘s social mores.

It is a confusing time for the nation’s youth — the arrival of 3G and 4G inPakistan in 2014 and a massive surge in the sale of smartphones has seen social media use surge, making information about largely taboo subjects such as love, dating, even sex more accessible than ever.

Young people can communicate online in relative freedom, and the country even has a Kim Kardashian type figure – Qandeel Baloch, who has become famous through her tireless self-promotion and suggestive “selfies” posted on social media, amassing tens of thousands of followers.

But for the many in the deeply conservative Muslim nation, strict religious and familial controls still dictate behaviour — the “duck-face” selfie shot, which is almost ubiquitous on the social media pages of teens in the West, can present a hazard in Pakistan.

Find the perfect light-selfie

“In my pictures, I cannot pout anymore, I’ve stopped doing that, because otherwise people judge,” the young girl told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“You cannot post a picture outside with your friends, because your relatives, or friends, or teachers will criticize you. They will say: ‘You look like a slut. Why are you smiling?’,” she explained.

“So now, I barely change my profile picture anymore. When I started using social media, I thought I’d be a pretty girl with a lot of friends online. But I’m just an awkward girl with five friends.”

The story is echoed by some of her classmates at a middle-income private school in Islamabad, where teenage boys and girls spoke candidly to AFP about their online experiences, but declined to be named.

“It all comes back to religion. We are in an Islamic state. People here will judge you because Islam doesn’t encourage girls to show their legs, or arms, and it doesn’t encourage boys and girls to interact,” said one 14-year-old boy who described being scolded by relatives after posting a picture of himself with a girl.

Growing defiance

Globally the perils women face online are well-documented but Pakistan‘s teenage girls face multiple issues — not only can their behaviour be judged as tarnishing the families’ reputation or honour, there are rising incidents of cyber-misogyny and harassment.

“When I post pictures I get these creepy stalkers who send me creepy pictures. It really messes you up,” said the 15-year-old girl, adding she no longer talks to boys online because of this.

A male classmate agreed: “I don’t like selfies. And it’s not safe for girls, because it can attract some boy stalkers.”

But there is also a sense of growing defiance in the country, where around two-thirds of the population — roughly 180 million people — is believed to be under the age of 30.

On Valentine’s Day, social media starlet Baloch donned a plunging scarlet dress and posted a message defying the country’s president, who had issued a stern warning against the “Western” holiday.

“They can stop people from going out, but they can’t stop people from loving,” she declared in a Facebook video, going on to branding politicians “idiotic and disgusting”.

Baloch is derided and feted in equal measure in Pakistan, but the message appeared to tap into the frustrations of many young people tired of being told how to behave — the footage has been viewed more than 830,000 times, and garnered 7,000 likes and counting.

She shot to fame in Pakistan in 2014 after a video of her pouting for the camera and asking “How em looking?” went viral.

“People are going crazy -– especially girls. I get so many calls where they tell me I’m their inspiration and they want to be like me,” she told AFP.

‘Don’t just blame society’

Cyberspace can turn society’s rules upside down, said one 13-year-old boy.

“Online, guys write to girls ‘hey baby, let’s hook up,'” he said to a roar of laughter from his classmates. Once, he admitted to more scandalised giggles, it was the other way around. “A girl asked me to be friends in an online message. I was scared to death.”

Another 15-year-old girl added social media provided them a unique platform for expression.

“It’s useful to us, it’s our own identity. In school you can’t always speak your mind. On social media, you can be more open about what you like. You get to be yourself.”

Some of AFP’s interviewees said they knew of teenagers using fictitious profiles in order to protect their identities and behave more freely.

One young girl commented: “In a Muslim country, it’s bad to talk to guys face to face so girls do it online. But it’s very risky, some people have fake accounts.”

Despite halting the pouting photographs, the 15-year-old girl called on her peers to be more confident online, instead of hiding behind Pakistani cultural restrictions.

She said: “You can’t blame society for everything… You can’t be a wimp all your teenage life and do nothing. And you can do (something) on social media.”

Pakistan’s Oscar Winner Eyes Bigger Prize – Law Reform

Sharmeen

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy made history by winning Pakistan‘s first Oscar 4 years ago. Now she’s back in Hollywood, hoping to scoop a second Academy Award for her harrowing film about a teenage girl shot in the face by her own family.

But while other Oscar nominees obsess about hair and make-up, the 37-year-old filmmaker has a much bigger fight on her hands: how to stop honor killings inPakistan, where she says more than 1,000 women are murdered each year by male relatives for allegedly bringing shame on the family.

“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” tells the story of 19-year-old Saba who was beaten, shot and thrown into the river after she ran off to marry her fiance, whom her family initially accepted — and then decided was too poor.

A Girl in the River - The Price of Forgiveness - Oscar Nomination [F]

The 40-minute film goes head to head with four other nominees in the documentary short subject category at Sunday’s Oscars in Hollywood.

Survivors of honor killings are rare and the film offers a stark look at the pain — physical and emotional — inflicted on Saba, her extraordinary resilience and ultimate failure to see her father and uncle convicted.

They beat her, shot her in the face and dumped her in a burlap sack in the river.

At the last moment, she tilted her head, meaning the bullet grazed her cheek instead of shattering her skull. Somehow she managed to cling to the bushes and pull herself out of the water. She went to police and to hospital.

Obaid-Chinoy, who read about her ordeal one morning in the newspaper, tracked her down and filmed Saba’s story over eight to nine months in 2014.

In Pakistan, a loophole in the law allows the perpetrators of so-called honor killings to get off scot-free if they are pardoned by their family.

Change law

Saba initially seeks a conviction, but eventually relents under the weight of pressure from her brother-in-law and community elders who say it is better to resolve enmity than let it fester.

Obaid-Chinoy wants to change that. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hosted a screening of the film in Islamabad last week and has promised to rid Pakistan of the crime by tightening up the legislation.

The filmmaker told AFP she had hoped for a positive response but admitted such an unprecedented reaction had taken her by surprise.

“If we get this law passed, it will be all worth it,” she said by telephone from Los Angeles after flying in from Pakistan, battling jet lag and an avalanche of pre-Oscar publicity.

“The biggest victory would be to get the legislation passed – to take forgiveness off the table, to have a law that deters killing women in the name of honor and for people to realize that this is a serious crime.”

Obaid-Chinoy has been here before. In 2012, she became an instant celebrity in Pakistan for winning an Oscar for “Saving Face,” a documentary that exposed the horrors endured by women who survive acid attacks.

Her success helped boost awareness about the particularly horrific crime, and the government in Punjab province started processing acid cases through anti-terrorism courts to offer women speedy justice, she said.

Obaid-Chinoy grew up in Karachi and studied in America, but is proud to live in Pakistan, believing the onus is on people like her to help the country improve.

Last year she started Pakistan‘s first animated feature film studio and she says she will wear an outfit by Pakistani label Sana Safinaz to the Oscars.

Abuse from cleric

Her Academy Award stands next to the television at home — with an Emmy on the other side. So has she dusted off a spot for a second Oscar?

“It’s a very tough year, I have to say, and there are some fantastic films in contention,” she told AFP.

Nor is it always smooth sailing at home.

Just this week she said a video went viral of a prominent cleric accusing her of being immoral and calling her a prostitute.

“I think if the film were to win an Academy Award, then the issue of honor killing, which doesn’t just affect women in Pakistan but affects women around the world, would really gain traction,” she said.

Obaid-Chinoy expects officials to start work on revising the honor killing legislation within weeks. Punjab — Pakistan‘s most populous province — has just passed laws protecting women’s rights and taking violence against women seriously.

“I think society is in a flux,” she said. “While there are very promising indicators… you also find pockets in Pakistan where violence against women is rising,” she said, listing southern Punjab, Baluchistan and the tribal belt.

In the film, Saba’s father Maqsood is unrepentant. Saba says she has not truly forgiven him. She now has a baby boy and has not traveled to Hollywood.

“She thought we were going to the World Cup,” Obaid-Chinoy said.

Her office is helping Saba and when they last spoke, Saba asked if she had won. Not yet.
