Are Muscular Men Better Leaders? US Study Says Yes!

How do you judge someone’s leadership potential? By their policies, public speaking skills or good looks? According to US researchers, a muscular physique could be one of the most important factors when sussing out someone’s ability to lead.

The team of researchers from the University of California Berkeley HAAS School of Business conducted a series of four experiments using 1120 participants, to see what role physical strength played in people’s judgement of a person’s leadership potential.

After measuring the chest and arm strength of various male subjects and giving them strength ratings based on these measurements, each man was photographed in a simple white tank top to reveal his shoulder, chest and arm muscles.

umair-jaswal-hot

The photographs were then shown to a group of male and female participants, who were asked to rate how much they admired the men or believed they would rise in status.

To distinguish between the effect of strength and physical attractiveness — another predictor of high social status — the researchers also asked participants to rate the subjects on “overall physical attractiveness.”

The researchers found that the stronger men were given higher status by participants because they were perceived to be leaders.

In another experiment, the researchers used Photoshop to switch the heads of the weak men onto the bodies of the strong men, and vice versa. Again, the participants rated the men with stronger bodies as higher in status and leadership qualities.

And in an experiment focusing on height, researchers showed participants three different line-ups of men of varying heights. Results showed that participants perceived the taller men to be stronger, with stronger men given higher ratings in leadership and status.

The team believes that their findings dispel the common myth that stronger men succeed because they intimidate their weaker and more submissive rivals, finding instead that men who were perceived to have the ability to behave aggressively were actually given a lower social status.

For those who are shorter or smaller, the researchers still have words of encouragement. “If you’re behaving in ways that demonstrate you are a leader or are not a leader, strength doesn’t matter,” says study co-author Anderson.

The findings were published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Women Protection Bill Passed By Punjab Assembly

Women's-Bill-Passed-in-Punjab

Activists Thursday hailed the passing of a historic bill protecting womens rights in Pakistan’s most populous province, with the legislation establishing a helpline and shelters while calling for some defendants to wear GPS trackers.

Women in conservative Pakistan have fought for their rights for decades, in a country where so-called honour killings and acid attacks remain commonplace.

But the Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Bill redefines “violence” to include “any offence committed against a woman including abetment of an offence, domestic violence, emotional, psychological and verbal abuse, economic abuse, stalking or a cyber crime”.

Women's-Bill-Passed-in-Punjab

Zohra Yusuf, head of the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), welcomed the bill and expressed the hope that efficient enforcement will help protect women and ensure that offenders do not escape justice.

“The bill appears to be a rather comprehensive attempt to institute a system for prevention of violence against women and for protection and rehabilitation of the women victims,” Yusuf said in a statement issued Thursday.

Yusuf said the bill includes a broad definition of violence and steps to make complaint submissions easier.

“These are all much-needed measures that deserve praise but it is important to remember that cosmetic and purely procedural changes have not had an impact in the past,” she said.

Abdul Qahar Rashid, spokesman for Punjab’s provincial assembly, told AFP that the bill, which was passed unanimously, must be signed by the provincial governor before it becomes law.

Under the new legislation, the government will institute a universal toll-free help line for the women, and will establish district protection centres and residential shelters under a phased programme.

Family courts must fix hearings within seven days of a complaint, the bill says, with all complaints to be decided within 90 days.

The court can also order a to be installed to monitor a defendant’s movements, provided an act of grave violence has been committed or is deemed likely to be committed.

Bachaana Movie Review: Sanam Saeed & Mohib Mirza’s Chemistry Lights Up The Screen!

Lahore-based Nasir Khan’s directorial debut movie, Bachaana, is a fresh take on a clichéd plot that succeeds on every ground – be it the top-notch performances, the intriguing plot or the scenic foreign locations.

The plot is very simple – an Indian girl, Aalia (Sanam Saeed) is trapped in an uncertain situation and our Pakistani hero, Vicky (Mohib Mirza), comes out as her great savior who helps her reach her destination safely.

While the story might sound similar to Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it’s Saad Azhar’s witty script, actors’ perfect emotions and director’s brilliant execution that made it into an enjoyable ride for the audience.

The first word that came out of my mouth after watching Bachaana was ‘mind blowing’.

The film has a perfect blend of humor, action, romance and suspense and the way the Indo-Pak connection was infused into the script is laudable. Leaving political agendas aside, Nasir Khan conveyed a message of spreading love and happiness through an engaging script.

Its success also lies in the fact that there isn’t anything superfluous and over-the-top in the film. The situations and characters are real and relatable. Its commendable that Aalia, the female lead, is sensible enough to use her mind to get out of trouble. Although she wanted Vicky to stand by her, she didn’t stand around and leave him to save the day. Rather, she speaks her mind, giving him the input to handle the situation.

Sanam Saeed & Mohib Mirza didn’t try too hard, rather they owned every scene with a natural spontaneity, perfect dialogue delivery, and impeccable expressions.

bachaana-bts-images-sanam-saeed-2-1

As expected, the film had several funny moments – especially Mohib Mirza’s spontaneous responses after getting caught in unfavorable situations. His perfect comical timing and convincing act, coupled with heroic charm proved him as perfect ‘silver screen material’.

On the other hand, our local beauty Sanam Saeed was also no less than any international star when it came to grace, style, class and acting prowess.

Breaking her stereotypical persona from television, Sanam brightened the screen with her vivacious act.

Having a fantastic mélange of sanity of a modern girl with innocent face and daring attitude she wonderfully portrayed a character anybody would fall in love with easily.

The wonderful duo, Sanam Saeed and Mohib Mirza, carried the film on their shoulder and added oodles of charm with their amazing chemistry. There is no cheap dialogue used to signify their love, instead, they adopted sweet little gestures to express their feelings for each other.

The director’s attention towards minute details further beautify the scenes; for example when Aalia holds Vicky’s hand underwater to save him from drowning was adorable yet touching.

bachaana-2

The film also featured Adeel Hashmi in a never before seen avatar. The poker-faced star had an important role to play but, unfortunately, he didn’t have too many dialogues to deliver. He brilliantly used facial expression to make his role convincing but we desperately wanted him to speak out in a scene or two.

Adeel’s presence in the film is the real suspense and we really don’t want to spoil it by revealing his identity.

I must add that the editing was crisp and there isn’t a single moment when I felt that the film was unnecessarily dragged. As far as film cinematography is concerned, it’s flawless and impeccable. We all know that Mauritius has scenic locations, but the way director captured it in the lens was outstanding.

I personally, loved the part where Mohib and Sanam were running in the jungle and the director used a long sequence shot from the top to capture it.

The breathtaking visuals looked astonishing on-screen, but many people didn’t know that it was actually recorded in daylight and later special effects were added to create a dramatic night scene – kudos to the technical team for doing it with such perfection that it was hard to notice it.

bachaana-e

The film’s music was also a great surprise – there were only three songs in the film and they all were aptly placed.

Sans any brand endorsement and item number the film amused the audience and credit definitely went to the cast and crew for it.

See pictures from the Karachi premiere below:

In the end, I would only say that the film is a family entertainer with clean comedy and amazing act. It definitely deserves a watch and I am sure that you would come home with a smile on face.

Karachi’s New Double-Decker Bus Service To Take Tour Around Old City

double-decker-bus-service

The Culture Department has agreed upon initiating a double-decker bus service in Karachi by July this year for the tourists to travel the city. The double-decker bus will be en route from Mohatta Palace to the Old City area of Karachi. It is safe to assume that the city is still quite unknown to its people which is why the culture department has taken up the responsibility into their own hands.

The announcement of the project was made by the culture and tourism secretary, Niaz Abbasi on Wednesday in the culture department meeting; the bus service is to kick off in July this year.

Abbasi, while discussing the proposed projects noted that there are 2 schemes in line that are being launched; with one being the double-decker bus service and the other being the purchase of two-50 seat boats for the tourists.

Revealing more about the boat scheme, Abbasi said that one boat will reside at the Beach Site near Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The boat service will show the visitors sea-sites of Karachi whereas the other boat will be operational at Sukkur, near Labe Mehran. This boat ride will be en route from the River Indus to Rohri.

The meeting was chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, whereas assistant to CM Sharmila Farooqui, principal secretary to CM, Alamuddin Bullo, additional Chief Secretary (development) Mohammad Waseem, finance secretary Sohail Rajput and Abbasi among others also attended the meeting.

Abbasi also disclosed the opening of six archeological and cultural monuments, out of which two centers will be established in Karachi and one each at Makli, Moen Jo Daro, Bambhore, and Kot Diji.

The Chief Minister also urged the authorities to remove all the encroachments around the heritage buildings in order to restore them to public.

Messi Sends Autographed Jerseys To His Little Afghan Fan

Afghan-boy

Argentine football star Lionel Messi has sent not one, but two jerseys to the five-year-old Afghan boy who became an Internet sensation last month when he was pictured wearing a plastic bag with “Messi” scrawled on it in marker pen.

Murtaza Ahmadi travelled with his family from eastern Ghazni province to Kabul to receive the gifts sent by Messi through UNICEF, where he is a goodwill ambassador.

“Murtaza couldn’t stop smiling. He kept repeating: I love Messi,” UNICEF Afghanistan spokesman Denise Shepherd-Johnson told AFP.

Afghan-boy

Messi autographed the jerseys, writing “With much love” in Spanish on them, and added a football to the treasure trove, UNICEF said.

Lionel Messi Named Global Ambassador For Dubai Expo 2020

Purchasing a Messi jersey was beyond the means of Murtaza’s poor family, members of the persecuted ethnic Hazara minority living in volatile Ghazni, near Kabul.

His elder brother Homayoun, 15, improvised the blue-and-white-striped plastic shirt with Messi’s name scrawled in black marker and posted the photos of Murtaza wearing it on Facebook in mid-January.

Messi

The image touched a chord with football fans around the world, and earned Murtaza the sobriquet “little Messi” on social media.

The Afghan Football Federation had said Messi was in contact with them to arrange a meeting with Murtaza as soon as possible, with the Spanish embassy in Kabul telling AFP it would do whatever possible to facilitate.

But a source close to Messi’s entourage said earlier this month they could neither confirm nor deny the speculation regarding a possible meeting.

Setting up a meeting in Afghanistan, in the grip of a fierce Taliban insurgency, is fraught with security challenges.

Football and cricket are the two most popular sports in the war-ravaged country — but sports were rarely played under Taliban rule, and the football stadium in Kabul was a notorious venue for executions, stonings and mutilations.

Google Speeds News To Smartphones, Challenging Facebook

Google

Google on Wednesday began delivering “blazingly fast” articles to smartphones and tablets in a stepped-up challenge to Facebook to be the leading mobile news hub. The Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project that was announced late last year is now live, Google said.

Challenging Facebook with its Instant Articles and the Apple News application, Google is using its massive computing power to enable mobile device users to load articles quickly, without the delay on many websites.

AMP was said to load mobile Web pages an average of four times faster than the current norm and use 10 times lesser data.

“We want the mobile Web to live up to its potential — to make it great for everyone, so they can quickly and easily get to the high-quality journalism you are producing,” Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said in a speech in Paris announcing the launch.

“This is a priority project for Google and for me.”

Google

AMP lets websites build light-weight versions of pages that can load “instantaneously” on mobile devices, according to Pichai. He cited research indicating that people typically abandoned mobile Web pages if they take more than a few seconds to appear.

“Now when you search for a story or topic on Google from a mobile device, webpages created using AMP will appear when relevant in the top stories section of the search results page,” Google said in a blog post.

Mark Zuckerberg Sees A Bright Future For Facebook in VR

“Any story you choose to read will load blazingly fast — and it’s easy to scroll through the article without it taking forever to load or jumping all around as you read.”

The technology launched with hundreds of partners, including Les Echos, TF1, Ouest France, and Vingt Minutes in France, Pichai said.

Other partners previously signed up include the New York Times, Washington Post, BuzzFeed, the Guardian and Wall Street Journal.

The move by Google to speed up mobile Internet gratification came as Silicon Valley rival Facebook works to expand its “Instant Articles” program launched last year.

Facebook in December said that it had signed up 350 global media partners for its service tailored for Apple and Android devices.

The service allows users to quickly view news articles which are hosted on the fast network of the world’s biggest social network.

Facebook says the articles are loaded for viewing 10 times faster than on standard connections.

Apple also has moved to become a hub for news with its Apple News application launched last year.

The projects have attracted many news organizations eager to get more readers through the news hubs as well as advertising revenues.

Pichai said that “cares deeply about journalism — yes, because of the crucial role it plays in democratic society, ensuring the spread of knowledge and the free flow of information.”

– Shield against hackers –

Pichai also introduced “Project Shield,” a project designed to protect publishers from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that essentially overwhelm websites with simultaneous requests for pages.

The technology “lets Google intercept bad traffic before it reaches your server, providing a ‘shield’ against would-be attackers,” according to the Internet giant.

“I am happy to announce today that we will be offering Project Shield to all the world’s independent news organizations. For free,” Pichai said.

“We hope that in the future even the smallest news organizations will be able to report the news without the fear of being taken down by digital attacks.”

PSL Will Revive Pakistan’s T20 Fortunes – Misbah

Misbah

Pakistan‘s Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq has hailed the recently concludedPakistan Super League (PSL) as a success for the country that will help the team reverse its slide in the game’s shortest format.

The 41-year-old veteran struck the winning runs for Islamabad United late on Tuesday, beating Quetta Gladiators by six wickets to conclude the three-week tournament in front of a capacity crowd in Dubai.

Stellar batting by Dwayne Smith of the West Indies and ex-Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin helped Islamabad romp to victory, but it was the stand-out performances of local players that were the tournament’s biggest plus for Misbah.

Misbah

“I am sure the Pakistan Super League will help Pakistan players in the same manner as IPL did to Indians and BPL has done to Bangladesh players,” he told AFP. “Look at Bangladesh, they are rising high because of the BPL so we will also reap benefits of the PSL in the near future.”

Umar Akmal, Pakistan‘s perennial batting under-achiever, led the way with the most runs (335 in seven matches) while previously unheralded 21-year-old left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz and left-arm pacer Rumman Raees also leave the tournament as household names.

Thirty-five-year-old Mohammad Sami meanwhile earned a national recall on the strength of his perfomances throughout the tournament, including figures of five wickets for eight runs in Islamabad’s play-off against Karachi.

Amir Returns To International Cricket- Welcomed By India’s Kohli

Pakistan‘s players had been largely missing out on Twenty20 exposure against international stars because they are banned from participating in the Indian Premier League, the format’s premier tournament.

The national Twenty20 team has slid in the intervening period, from world champions in 2009 to a lowly sixth place now.

Beyond the on-field performances the tournament was seen as a feel-good success for the country, despite being held in the UAE.

Fans gathered to watch the final on big screens placed in market places throughout major cities in a charged atmosphere previously only seen forPakistan‘s international matches.

Viewership figures were as high as 55 percent for some matches, according to a management source close to one of the teams — or roughly 100 million people.

Foreign stars including England’s Kevin Pietersen and Australian Shane Watson tweeted about their affection for the league while Najam Sethi, the tournament’s CEO, called it a “success for Pakistan“.

Some insiders had warned Pakistan‘s first franchise-based league may not be enough to overcome revenue and time lost during the country’s long exile from hosting international cricket.

The PSL’s five teams were sold for $93 million for a period of a decade while TV rights and title sponsorship fetched around $20 million for three years.

Sethi said the PCB would not face any losses this year, and was equally bullish about prospects for the franchises — claiming that one owner told him that the sale value had increased from $25 million to $59 million.

Kohli.Brandsynario

The very first Pakistan Super League 2016 came, won over our hearts and left, giving the fans some mesmerizing cricket moments. But worry not cricket fans, we now have some more exciting cricket coming up on the international front in the form of Micromax Asia Cup T20 2016; a real clash of the arch rivals, Pakistan Vs India, is going to take place this Saturday and fans are pretty excited about it.

The match will be played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur Bangladesh; Pakistani team will be starting their campaign with this big show. The tournament however is beginning today with the India Vs Bangladesh opener.

Pak-vs-India.Brandsynario

Indian cricket team faced a major blow as the captain MS Dhoni got injured prior to the Asia Cup and now Virat Kohli is leading the side. Shahid Afridi led Pakistan cricket team will be in good match practice as every player of the squad was in action during PSL T20 that ended yesterday.

India’s Dhoni Suffers Back Spasm Before Asia Cup 2016

This match is a very good opportunity for both teams to gear up for their showdown in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 scheduled on 19th March, and will easily get to know the opposition’s strength and weaknesses. Winners of this match will definitely have a psychological edge over the other in the grand event.

pakistan-vs-india

The weather conditions of Bangladesh might favor the bowlers and spinners will come on to play a key role for the victory of their respective teams. Pakistan having the young lad Muhammad Nawaz in the side along with Imad Wasim and Shahid Afridi are pretty balanced in this department and this trio might give a hard time to the Indian batsmen.

Wasim Akram, the former captain believes India might have a slight edge over Pakistan owing to the present form. “That will be a good game to look forward to and given the way India are playing right now, they may be favourites,” Wasim said while speaking to the Times of India.

“Then, Bangladesh have been an unbeatable side at home. This edition has a lot of potential and will help teams pick their best combinations for World T20,” added Wasim.

Indian team has the services of two experienced spinner Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh and even without Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, their batting line up is better than Pakistan’s. However, it might be a low scoring game, as we have seen in the past in Bangladesh Premier League 2015.

Kohli.Brandsynario

Pakistan and Indian cricket teams are facing off each other after a year since ICC CWC 2015 but this time in T20 format. If we see the history of matches played between Pakistan and India in the Asia Cup, both teams have played 11 matches by far, won 5 matches each and one match had no result.

Pakistan Vs India Asia Cup Record

1984:   India won by 54 runs

1988:   India won by 4 wickets

1995:   Pakistan won by 97 runs

1997:   No result

2000:   Pakistan won by 44 runs

2004:   Pakistan won by 59 runs

2008:   India won by 6 wickets

2008:   Pakistan won by 8 wickets

2010:   India won by 3 wickets

2012:   India won by 6 wickets

2014:   Pakistan won by 1 wicket

How can Pakistani fans forget the heroics of Shahid Afridi in the previous Asia Cup match against India, the boom boom snatched victory from them by hitting two unbelievable sixes in the last over against Ashwin. The skipper of Pakistani team will definitely try to show his magic in terms of both batting and bowling, provided this will be his second last international event.

After playing India, Pakistan’s next match in Asia Cup T20 will be on Feb 29 against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), then against Bangladesh on March 2 and Sri Lanka on March 4.
