The News International: 25 Years of Uncompromising Truth

The invention of printing has modernized mass communication, no other invention has had such an influence in the history of mankind. Today in the new digital age, what you know makes you what you are. We cannot imagine the world without newspaper; it has become an integral part of our lives.

Printing technology came to the Indian subcontinent in 1556 in the Mughal era through Christian priests. According to the World Association of Newspapers, the first newspaper in the modern sense was published by Johann Carlous in 1605 in Germany but in the modern concept, the first was published in Oxford [UK] in 1655.

The-News-International

Kolkata has a unique place in the history of Indian newspaper publishing that the first to fourth English language newspapers were launched from this city in the late eighteenth century. First printed Urdu newspaper was “Jam-e-Jahan Numa”, published in Kolkata in 1822 under the supervision of British but the Gujarati daily “Mumbai Samachar” published from Mumbai is the oldest existing newspaper not only in India but also in Asia since 1822.

Over a century later, Urdu daily Jang was launched from Delhi under the maverick leadership of [late] Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman in 1939. It was the beginning of the “Jang Media Group”, which has now cultivated into the largest and the fastest growing media group in Pakistan with a diversified portfolio of media properties employing over 6ooo people countrywide.

Since the day one, Jang Media Group has been involved in a proactive strategy of bringing positive change in the lives of its fellow countrymen through information, education and entertainment. The Group’s special initiatives like Akhhbar-e-Jahan [Urdu Weekly], Mag [English Weekly], Awam [Urdu Daily], Geo TV [Media Network], MKRF [CSR Wing] and The News International [English Daily] provide enlightenment and continue to brighten the lives of citizens.

In each of its initiatives the Jang Group has built up leadership positions. By launching top standard English daily The NEWS, the group became the publisher of the country’s first 4-color newspaper in 1991.

Today, it is one of Pakistan’s leading English dailies. Three simultaneous editions are published from Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi/Islamabad. An overseas edition is also published from London catering to the second and third generation Pakistanis living in the UK.

With many firsts in journalism, the Group’s English daily is the first newspaper in Pakistan that introduces the concept of ‘Investigative Report’. The News also pioneered a special daily three-page Sports Supplement besides four page City Supplement and the daily Business Supplement.

There are weekly special interest supplements catering to women [YOU], teenagers [Us], kids [Disney Discoverer] and the weekend lifestyle, entertainment and fashion in the paper magazine [Instep].

25 Years of The News International

For 25 years, The News has been both, witness to a changing Pakistan and one of its game changers with its strategy of change and policy of honesty, transparency and accuracy. It is the national brand aimed at bringing the whole truth to the generation which was born in rather a newer Pakistan.

The newspaper brand has a national presence and is one of the market leaders in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi as preferred English daily.

The-News-International-2

The News has completed its silver jubilee quite successfully in terms of wide and ever growing readership due it’s authentic news and absolutely correct information. As a part of silver jubilee celebrations, the newspaper came up with a Creative Print Advertisement Campaign based on a big idea-cum-long idea, which boasts the title: Witness to History. It is all about its commitment to truth without any compromise.

With a series of elegant communication design and development, this campaign effectively tells the story about getting facts straight without falling prey to false information and becoming a part of history while still it is in making.

The-News-International-1

From The News International, we have reasons to expect many more firsts and bold initiatives in the years to come.

Pakistan is changing, and The News International as a vital organ of the Jang Media Group has to play the role of a vanguard team in precipitating that change by educating minds and warming hearts.

Pakistani Movie Balu Mahi to Star Rahat Fateh Ali Khan!

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will be gracing the big screen with the upcoming romantic flick ‘Balu Mahi’! Other than the presences of our favorite showbiz Jodi Osman Khalid Butt and Ainy Jaffri we have got another reason to look forward to Haissam Hussain’s directorial debut film Balu Mahi – and that is the presence of ghazal maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

The great singing sensation of the subcontinent, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, will make a cameo appearance in the film in the beautiful qawwali composed by musician Sahir Ali Bagga, confirmed the film’s publicist Umair Qazi to Brandsynario.

“The qawwali has an integral part of the story and goes perfectly well with the plot. Its significance has further increased with the presence of legendary singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who will make a cameo appearance in the song with lead pair Osman Khalid Butt and Ainy Jaffri,” he said.

He also added that the song has already been shot in Lahore. When we asked him about the film shooting progress he had this to say:

“We have currently shooting the first spell in Lahore and it will continue for around twenty days,” he added.

We believe that the classic qawwali will be shot at Hiran Minar near Lahore in Sheikhupura as a couple of days ago the team shared the images from the historical place.

WHO Launches $56 Million Zika Response Plan

Zica-Response-Plan-by-WHO-Lead

The World Health Organization on Wednesday released its initial response plan to the Zika virus outbreak, launching a funding appeal for the $56 million (50 million euros) operation.

The unprecedented outbreak of the virus, first discovered in Uganda in 1947, has become a global concern, with Zika now strongly suspected of causing two serious neurological disorders, microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The UN’s health agency said it needed $25 million to fund its own response plan while an additional $31 million would support the work of key partners.

“The strategy focuses on mobilising and coordinating partners, experts and resources to help countries enhance surveillance of the Zika virus and disorders that could be linked to it,” a WHO statement said.

Other priorities are to control the populations of the mosquito species that carries Zika, as well as “communicate risks, guidance and protection measures, provide medical care to those affected and fast-track research and development of vaccines,” testing and treatment, the statement added.

The outbreak has predominantly affected the Americas, with Brazil the hardest-hit country by far.

While Zika itself typically involves mild, flu-like symptoms, global anxiety has been driven by the likely link to likely link to microcephaly — which can cause severe birth malformations and defects — and Guillan-Barre, which can cause brain damage and even death.

WHO said it was it was financing its initial operations from an “emergency contingency fund”.

The UN agency on February 1 declared the surge in cases of microcephaly and Guillain-Barre and their possible link to Zika an international public health emergency.

Olympics 2024: 4 Cities Open Campaign To Host The Grand Event

Olympics 2024

Candidature files from Paris, Rome, Los Angeles and Budapest to host the 2024 Olympic Games, sport’s most glittering event, were all delivered on schedule, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Wednesday.

The new Candidature Process encourages the cities to present projects which match their sports, economic, social and environmental long-term regional planning needs.

This is part of the ‘Olympic 2020 agenda’ which also insists on the use of existing facilities and provides flexibility for the venues to meet local sustainability and legacy needs.

The race to host the 2024 Olympic Games gets underway in earnest today with the four bid cities — Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome — presenting their initial candidature files to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

A delighted IOC President Thomas Bach, confirming the four top drawer candidates, was clearly impressed with a first look at the bids on Wednesday and said he was looking forward to a fascinating competition.

“Los Angeles, Rome, Budapest and Paris are all submitting projects fully in line with Olympic Agenda 2020,” he said.

It is impressive to see how they have incorporated the Olympic project into the long-term development plans of their city, region and country. Coming from different starting points, for all four there is a clear focus on sustainable development, legacy and in particular how the facilities are going to be used after the Olympic Games.

The candidate files under the new procedure are delivered in three phases and the IOC will confirm (or not) the cities passing their criteria at that stage.

Wednesday’s first instalment deals with global vision, Games concept and strategy. These will now be studied by IOC working groups who will deliver reports by June 2016.

Phase two propositions dealing with governance, legal matters and venue funding are due by 7 October 2016. And the final dossier on Games delivery, experience and venue legacy are not due until 3 February 2017.

Los Angeles 2024 Olympic bid chiefs decided not to hold a launch ceremony instead kicking off their campaign by unveiling an official logo of an angel basking in rays of Californian sunshine on Tuesday as the city bids to stage the games for a third time after 1932 and 1984.

The logo is accompanied by an official slogan, urging people to “Follow the Sun” by supporting the Los Angeles bid.

Existing installations such as the Staples Center, the LA Coliseum, the Rose Bowl, and university stadiums will be used with athletes to be housed on the UCLA campus.

The Hungarian capital Budapest has announced a modest budget of 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion) to build thier entire infrastructure. No launch ceremony will take place in there after opponents, fearing spiralling costs and risks of corruption, tried to force a citizens referendum to block the bid, as was the case with Hamburg.

Rome bid president Luca Di Montezemolo presided over a ceremony which was broadcast on state-owned television RAI.

With the Colosseum as their emblem and the city’s major tourist attractions as venues, the Italian capital will build on its strengths and existing infrastructure.

Paris bid committee president Bernard Lapasset will confirm a budget of 3.2 billion euros for infrastructure, with existing stadiums, arenas and world recognized landmarks all on the bill. The vote for the host city will take place on September 13th 2017, in Lima.

Islamabad to Have Biggest & Most Advanced IT Park

South Korean Ambassador Dr. Song Jong-Hwan in the gathering at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) announced the establishment of one of the biggest and the most advanced IT parks in Islamabad to improve trade ties with Pakistan.

According to the reports, Dr. Song at the gathering confirmed that the park will occupy about one million square feet of area with the most advanced facilities on board.

South Korea all set for 5G!

The Exim Bank of Korea has agreed to pay $50 million for the construction of the park, whereas the South Korean teams will conduct feasibility check assistance from the Ministry of IT and Pakistan Software Exports Board (PSEB).

Tradekey Launches Pakistani Domain to Boost Pakistan’s Trade Industry

“Establishing the park will promote small and medium enterprises as well,” Dr Song said.

Dr. Song, while talking about some serious concerns over the trade issues said that the bilateral trade between the two countries has suffered a great loss since three years. It has declined by almost 34%.

Mentioning the reasons behind such hefty loss, he said that there has always been non-availability of trade information and lack of understanding in the areas of cooperation, whereas he also mentioned that Pakistan and Korea are currently involved in a free trade agreement feasibility that is expected to end in June this year after which both countries are expecting an increase in the bilateral trade.

On the other hand, ICCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh said that South Korea follows strict sanitary  measures for trade, which is why Pakistani traders face difficulties in finding an appropriate place in the Korean markets.

New GCSE Grading System to Be Introduced in 2017

The Department for Education (DfE), responsible for education and children’s services in England, and Ofqual, England’s qualifications and exams regulator, announced some important changes in the content and structure of GCSEs taken by students in schools across England. The new GSCE exams will be held in Summer 2017.

One of the worth-noting features is the new grading scale. The new grading scale will ditch the traditional A * grading system in favor of a numerical grading system, ranging from numbers 1 to 9 to mark the performance level. The numerical grading system will work in descending order, with 9 being the top grade. Students who will not show satisfactory performance in the new GCSE exams will receive a ‘U’.

The second important change in course content will prove to be very challenging for students as they will see all subjects – including English literature, maths, and history – toughen-up.

According to Michael Gove, former education secretary who set out the proposals in 2013, GCSEs in 2017 will be getting a lot harder overall to equip [young people] to win in the global race.

However on the positive note, schools will not be ranked according to the number of five or more A* to C GCSE grades. The secondary schools will make use of ‘progress’ score, Progress 8 which aims to mark the progress a student makes from the end of primary school to the end of secondary school.

According to DfE: “It is a type of value added measure, which means pupils’ results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils with the same prior attainment.”

The new standards set for new GCSEs in 2017 are driving parents and students frenzy. However, Ofqual is stressing on the its positive sides ignoring the reservations over the changes.

These changes do not apply to the CIE or IGCSE exams.

“[Head coach] Moin Khan, [mentor] Sir Vivian Richards and all the players were very welcoming and we played like a family,” he said.

Wall of Kindness Emerges All Over Pakistan

Deewar-e-Meherbani or the Wall of Kindness is making it’s way from Iran to Pakistan. Last year, some anonymous Irani citizens across the country initiated a social betterment project by only painting a wall and erecting hooks on them.

The project started from Mashhad and quickly spread to other cities as well. People would hang warm clothes, boots or anything they chose to donate or could spare to help get the underprivileged through the harsh winters.

The charity corner, set up by the activists of social organisation ‘Pursadaran-i-Husain’ at Tainkiwala Chowk on Feb 14, invites the passersby with a slogan: “Leave what you do not need” and “take it if you need”.

Abbas Zaidi, the man behind the wall idea, told Dawn the wall was like a place where people would leave their surplus clothes, food items and other usable items for the needy people who pick what they need.

They are not only providing clothing and other wearable but also packaged edibles and milk as well.

PSL Isl Vs Lhr.Brandsynario

UPDATE: Islamabad United has defeated Lahore Qalandars by 5 wickets in convincing manner and hence the their journey of PSL T20 2016 ended.

Karachi Kings has qualified as number fourth team in for the playoffs.

Lahore Qalandars will battle against Islamabad United today in the last match of the PSL T20 2016 to qualify for playoffs.

The continuous dismal performance of Lahore Qalandars has driven them to the verge of possible ouster, and their access to the next stage is also preconditioned to the defeat of Karachi Kings in today’s first match.

Having T20 match winner players like Chris Gayle, Umar Akmal and Dwayne Bravo, Lahore Qalandars could not meet expectations of their fans and lacked on the bowling side which is why they lost even after scoring 202 runs against Gladiators last night.

The team also struggled to make a winning combination despite experimenting with too many options in the earlier matches. On the other hand, Islamabad United had to face problems due to injuries faced by Shane Watson and Misbah ul Haq early on, but they have gained momentum now; just the right time!

Qalandars have put all their hopes into Chris Gayle and Umar Akmal in batting while Ehsan Adil can surprise the opponents like he did in the previous game. Misbah and his team will go with full force against Qalandars to finish off this stage in style.

‘McChoco Potato’ Fries: A Big Hit At McDonald’s Japan

Mcdonald's-fries

Customers like Shigeaki Yamaguchi may be the last hope for McDonald’s Japan as it battles slumping sales in the wake of an embarrassing string of food scandals.

At a location in Tokyo’s busy Shinjuku district, Yamaguchi munched on the chain’s newest culinary offering — french fries drizzled in brown and white chocolate syrup.

“Delicious,” the 37-year-old proclaimed as he dug into the sticky 330 yen ($2.90) mass known as the McChoco Potato.

“The reason I came is that I wanted to taste products that didn’t exist until now.”

Love them or hate them, social media spun into a frenzy over chocolate fries, and customer numbers rose in January for the first time in several years — just as the salty-sweet creation launched.

“The chocolate fries have been extremely popular with customers, and actually, not just customers in Japan,” the unit’s president Sarah Casanova said last week.

“They have made the news and blogs and SNS (social networking services) all over the world.”

Still, food industry watchers warn it will take more than the apparent success of chocolate fries to save the fast-food chain’s bacon.

Market share in Japan slipped to 10.4 percent in 2014 from nearly 14 percent five years earlier, according to market research firm Euromonitor, putting the chain well behind ubiquitous convenience stores stocking a wide range of food, and Japanese quick-service chains.

McDonald’s Japan last week reported an annual loss of 34.7 billion yen ($304 million), its second straight year in the red and the biggest shortfall since opening its first store in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district in 1971.

McDonald’s Happy Meal – Happiness Starts Here

“Undoubtedly, 2015 was the most challenging year we have faced in our 45-year history,” Casanova said.

US-based McDonald’s is mulling the sale of some if its stake in the Japan unit, which has closed hundreds of its 3,000 locations and renovated others in recent years.

Some analysts speculate the buyer will be the Japan-based owner of the 7-11 chain of convenience stores.

– ‘Too late to go back’ -Sales went into a steep dive after a mainland Chinese supplier was discovered to be mixing out-of-date meat with fresh produce. Then bits of plastic were found in a sundae and pieces of vinyl in chicken nuggets.

The apparent discovery of a human tooth in a box of french fries was, for many consumers, the icing on an increasingly unappetising cake.

Vows to improve food quality and win back “customer trust” followed, along with a press conference where Casanova bowed deeply to the cameras — a common act of contrition by executives at crisis-hit Japanese firms.

A new mix-and-match menu with burgers, side dishes and desserts has also been in the offing as well as a focus on local produce, such as using cheese from northern Hokkaido or sweet potatoes from southwestern Japan.

McDonald’s Japan To Sell Chocolate Covered French Fries

The company held a burger-naming contest this month, garnering some five million suggestions on what to call its new sandwich.

The lucky winner gets 1.42 million yen ($12,400) in cash — enough, the chain says, to buy the yet-to-be-named burger every day for a decade.

“It seems like they’re tightening control over management and offering new products,” said a hopeful Yamaguchi, who works in advertising.

But his co-worker Yosuke Ota was less convinced.

“I’ll always have doubts after the scandal,” he said.

Food industry analysts are also sceptical.

“Some of the company’s efforts, such as store renovations and a new menu worked out, but the rising customer numbers are mostly due to reversing a sharp drop a year ago,” said Yuri Gorai, a research analyst at Euromonitor.

“Monthly sales are not back to the same level as they were before the food scandals.”

Japanese customers expect high-quality food, so the chain must re-focus on sourcing locally, said Seiichiro Samejima, a fast food sector analyst at Ichiyoshi Research Institute.

“The company needs to appeal to customers by telling them they’re not using Chinese products but rather safe, domestically sourced ingredients,” he added.

McDonald’s Japan got off to a strong start in the early years under former President Den Fujita who combined American and Japanese management styles.

Things changed under Fujita’s successor who boosted the number of franchised stores and sourced huge amounts of food as cheaply as possible from overseas suppliers, said Hosei University professor Kosuke Ogawa, who authored a book on the company’s failure in Japan.

“But it’s too late to go back,” Ogawa said.

Google’s Timeline Transition From Picasa To Photos

Google-from-Picasa-to-Google-Photos

Google confirmed last week the closure of Picasa, its desktop photo management and editing program with online image hosting and sharing functions. The firm will instead be directing users to Google Photos, launched in 2015, a web-based platform offering storage for an unlimited number of photos.

Picasa

Google bought Picasa in 2004 and released the program as a free download, first for Windows, then for Linux and Mac OS. Picasa is essentially an image editing suite with a photo viewer and organizer for pictures stored on a computer. It was also extended to let users select photos to backup or share online in Picasa Web Albums.

Picasa Web Albums

Google will be stopping technical support and updates for the program as of March 15, 2016.

Picasa Web Albums

The online version of Picasa lets users share whole albums on the platform, and has progressed considerably over the years to gain new functions like geotagging, face recognition and keyword management. It has, however, faced increasingly tough competition, especially from social networks (Facebook) and mobile apps (Instagram). In 2013, Google first transferred users’ Picasa albums to the photos section of its Google+ network. Now, any remaining photos and albums will automatically migrate to a Photos account.
Picasa Web Albums will close definitively on May 1, 2016.

Google Photos

Unveiled in spring 2015 at the Google I/O developers’ conference, Google Photos offers free and unlimited cloud-based storage for photos (up to 16 Megapixels) and videos (1080p), together with tools for organizing and editing pictures. Google Photos is available online, alongside Google’s traditional tools (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Agenda, Google+, Hangouts, etc.), and on mobile devices in the form of an application. This can be used to synchronize photos taken with a smartphone camera directly to a user account.
