Instagram To Introduce Beefed Up Security Process

Instagram

Instagram is rolling out an authentication process that will ask users to verify a phone number, a tool that will serve to reassure its 400 million users including celebrities and brands.

According to TechCrunch, the photo-sharing site is testing out the new feature following calls to beef up security from hackers.

The two-step authentication process is modeled after Facebook’s security system, Instagram’s parent company.

Users are asked to provide a phone number. A verification code will be sent to the phone and must be used to complete the login when suspicious activity is detected.

Instagram

The move is meant to protect regular users from having their photos deleted and reassure celebrities and brands who use the photo sharing site as a promotional tool, who are particularly prone to hack attacks that could damage their reputation, spam and scare away followers.

Dawn Foods Fined Rs 20 Million For Copying K&N’s Product Packaging

A.Rahim Foods (Pvt) Limited, better known as Dawn Foods was fined Rs 20 million by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) for imitating the packaging design and labeling of  the frozen food giant K&N’s Foods (Pvt) Limited. This certain act violates the Competition Act, 2010.

K&N’s filed a complaint against Dawn Foods allegedly imitating product packaging. The bench that fined the Dawn Foods included Vadiyya Khalil CCP Chairwoman, Ikramul Haque Qureshi (Member Cartels and Trade Abuses, and Legal) and Shahzad Ansar (Member Office of Fair Trade and Advocacy).

See the post by Ali & Associates below:

[fb_embed_post href=”https://www.facebook.com/AliAssociatesOfficial/posts/965766936841426?__mref=message_bubble/” width=”550″/]

The CPP order spells it out quite clearly, “The extent of mimicry by the Dawn in terms of the overall layout, design size, shape and color scheme of the K&N Packaging leads the Commission to the reasoned conclusion that the respondent is clearly culpable of and has resorted to parasitic copying.”

The complaint filed elaborated that packaging for Dawn Foods frozen and processed food products was too  close to that of the K&N’s well established ready to eat frozen food line. More instances of such blunt imitation were provided as well. Such as the usage of the product name ‘Combo Wings’ also violated the unethical use of K&N’s trademark which could lead to having detrimental impact on the K&N’s business.

K&N Launches Stok Chicken Cube Line

Dawn Foods, through this act violated, the section 10(2d) of the Competion Act, 2010 by resorting to ‘copycat packaging’ or ‘parasitic copying’ of K&N’s packaging which would eventually deceive the consumers by confounding them with the deceptively close imitation.

The order further adds on, “The consumers are clearly susceptible and at a serious risk of falling prey to deceptive confusion pertaining to the origin and at quality of instant commodity, due to strikingly similar packaging and labelling of the products.”

A source aware of the matter’s proceedings commented, “This is the highest ever penalty imposed in lieu of product packaging and misuse of trademark case.”

It was also concluded that this practice could leave quite a dent on K&N’s brand identity and the brand goodwill it had earned and maintained for several years.

PIA’s Privatisation Right on Track

PIA

Secretary Privatisation Commission, Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera on Tuesday settled that government was moving ahead with the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA); the financial advisers are to organize the transaction process of the airlines.

“Currently, it is under consideration to bifurcate PIA into the core and non-core businesses. The core business will comprise PIA flight operations, landing and handling, kitchens, training and education, engineering and healthcare, which will be handed over to the strategic investor,” Mr Sukhera said.

PIA
Ahmad Nawaz on Tuesday made these announcements in a briefing given to the National Assembly standing committee on finance in the Parliament House; the meeting was chaired by Qasir Ahmed Sheikh of the ruling PML-N. Further reports regarding the privatisation issue included a report compiled by the FA that would be sent to the PC board in order to derive a final decision.

PIA Flight Operations Partially Resume!

Ahmad said that PIA possesses authorities over a few non-core business that includes real estate assets such as Roosevelt Hotel in New York, a hotel in Paris, other hotels and an engineering complex in Karachi. “But these would not be handed over to the strategic partner when the airlines is privatised,” he added.

On the other hand, Mr Umar raised a question in the Parliament asking about the reasons behind such heavy losses. He said that in the year 2007, PIA suffered a loss of merely 34 billion, but in 7 years, the loss has accumulated up to Rs 254 billion.

Meanwhile, the officials of Privatisation Committee mentioned that the accumulation of the operational revenue of PIA in the year 2008 and 2012 accounted to Rs 112 to 116 billion, but according to the last calculation in 2015, the revenue declined to Rs 91 billion.

The committee also asked PIA’s management to share further financial details of the national flag carrier since 2000, so that the reasons behind such losses can be ascertained more clearly.

Pakistani Scientist Samir Iqbal Develops Early Age Cancer Diagnosis Device

Samir Iqbal, an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington has developed a new cancer cell detection system that will help in diagnosing cancer at a very early stage.

According to the reports, Samir shared the breakthrough development of him and his team in a recent Nature’s Department Reports paper called ‘Effects of Nonotexture on Electrical Profiling of Single Tumor Cell and Detection of Cancer from Blood in Microfluidic Channel.”

samiriqbal

The details described in the paper mentioned that the device works by tracking a cellular behavior using the nanotextured walls that imitate the layers of body tissues.

Pakistani School KGS Wins 34 Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards

Samir’s team members included Young-tae Kim, a UTA associate professor in the Bioengineering Department, Muhymin Islam, a STEM doctoral candidate, and engineering students Mohammad Motasim Bellah, Adeel Sajid and Mohammad Raziul Hasan.

Iqbal while explaining the project said “The answer was in creating a nanotextured wall that fools blood samples into thinking its actual tissue,” Iqbal said.

Nargis Mavalvala: Pakistan-Born Scientist Who Detected Einstein’s Gravitational Waves

“We used inherent properties of the cell walls to create a diagnostic tool. The cancer cells behave differently as they come into contact with the nanotextured walls. They dance.”

According to him, these dancing cells will help the doctors to diagnose the cancer cells at a very early stage and will help them to start the treatment early.

“Discovering the cancer earlier, before it metastasizes, is essential to surviving cancer,” Iqbal said. “Our device has the potential to do that.”

Iqbal to carry this project has received up to $1.4 million in grants since his arrival at UTA in 2007, whereas a 2014 $480,000 National Science Foundation funding has sponsored in the creation of the device.

On the other hand, Khosrow Behbhani, dean of UTA College of Engineering earlier before the development of this device claimed that the research of Samir Iqbal is groundbreaking. “Dr. Iqbal and his colleagues are bringing engineering innovation to meet the challenge of early cancer detection,” Behbehani said.

PSL T20 2016: Peshawar Zalmi Beat Karachi Kings by 5 wickets

UPDATE: Peshawar Zalmi got a comfortable victory over Karachi Kings by 5 wickets and it can all over for Kings’ journey of PSL T20 2016 if Lahore Qalandar beats Islamabad United today in the second match. Kings is now at fifth position (lowest) with only four points.

Karachi Kings set a reasonable target of 153 runs (152-7) for Zalmis, Lendl Simmons was prominent with his 49 runs while Karachi’s run machine Bopara played 23 runs knock. Zalmis chased down easily in the end after recovering from early damage done. Brad Hodge played a match winning innings of 85* runs off just 45 balls and finished the match with 1.3 overs to spare.

Karachi Kings will be up against Peshawar Zalmi today and will face a ‘make or break situation’ to qualify for the playoffs of HBL PSL T20 2016. It is one of the greatest challenges for the Kings but they have the capability to achieve this target; however, it will be a pressure game and they have to give their best to qualify for the next round.

Team Karachi has been unlucky in the past; despite some very close fights, the team could not turn them into victories.

England’s Owais Shah has joined to replace James Vince and his inclusion can make a difference because he can hit the ball well all across the boundary; it will be interesting to see whether he is ready for the big game or not.

Though we have seen some pretty good individual performances from Karachi players, they will be hoping for a star performance again from Ravi Bopara, who has been outstanding in this league so far.

Peshawar Zalmi will definitely try to win this game to gain the high points on the points table and will also want to go to the next stage with victory. For Karachi Kings, it’s a do or die situation today.

Analog Cable TV Networks in Pakistan Converting To Digital Cable Network

Cable-TV-Netwrok

The Analogue cable system all over Pakistan is all set to be replaced by a digital system. The move will be made by the Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (COAP) and the estimated date of conversion is slated to be September 2016. 12 major cities will get the new digital cable system first and will cost an estimated 90 Billion PKR.

Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Absar Alam & COAP representatives revealed in a press conference that the government has been requested by COAP to proclaim cable operators as an industry. They also said that the government should provide tax relief on imports of materials required for the process of cable TV network digitization.

So what will the consumer get out of this? High Definition cable streams for their viewing pleasure. There is a catch, though; consumers will have to invest in a digital set top box which will cost nearly 5,000 PKR in order to achieve the quality.

Google Fiber to Transform TV Ad Targeting and Monitoring

The list of cities to get digital cable transmission this year is given below:

  • Karachi
  • Hyderabad
  • Lahore
  • Islamabad
  • Rawalpindi
  • Peshawar
  • Multan
  • Quetta
  • Sukkur
  • Faisalabad
  • Hassan Abdal
  • Gujranwala

Chairman PEMRA declared that the authorities have reached an agreement on the deadline for switching from current analog to digital cable TV by local cable operators.

The major cities will receive digital systems by the end of May while the rest of the country’s cable will be digitalized by the end of September 2016.

He also stated that the fees for importing digital set-top boxes have been eliminated for 1 year. Also, the converted cable operators will be granted a 10-year license instead of the 5-year standard one.

The chairman also warned that strict action will be taken against private TV channels found guilty of violating set regulations and rules. He cited the example of the recent license cancellation of two private TV channels and warned others regarding airing controversial content.

Pakistan Scientists Find 1.1 Million Year Old Stegodon Tusk

A team of Pakistani researchers claims to have unearthed a 1.1 million-year-old stegodon tusk in the central province of Punjab, potentially shedding new light on the mammal’s evolutionary journey.

Stegodons, distant cousins of modern elephants, are thought to have been present on earth from around 11 million years ago until the late Pleistocene period, which lasted until the end of the last Ice Age around 11,700 years ago.

The tusk measures some eight feet (2.44 metres) in length and is around eight inches (20.3 cm) in diameter, making it the the largest ever discovered in the country, according to the team.

It was found by researchers from the zoology department of the University of Punjab during an expedition in the Padri village of Jhelum district, said Khurram Shahzad, a spokesman for the university.

Professor Muhammad Akhtar, who led the research trip, told AFP: “This discovery adds to our knowledge about the evolution of the stegodon, particularly in this region.”

“It also sheds light on what the environment was like at the time of the animal’s life.”

Dr Gerrit Van Den Bergh, a paleontologist at the University of Wollongong in Australia who has done extensive research on the ancient mammals including in Pakistan, said: “If you have a complete tusk, that’s quite special — they are quite rare.”

He cautioned however that further verification, including of the dating, would be required. Akhtar said the fossil belonged to the late Pleistocene period and its age was determined using a uranium-lead radioactive dating technique.

Stegodonts were known for their long, nearly straight tusks and low-crowned teeth with peaked ridges.

This indicated they were browsers or mixed feeders in a forested environment, in contrast to the high-crowned plated molars of mammoths and elephants which allowed them to graze.

They were strong swimmers and are thought to have originated in Africa but to have quickly spread to Asia, where most remains have been found.

“Around 1.2 million years ago they were still thriving,” said Van Den Bergh. “They are mostly an Asian species but remains have been found further afield. Recently a molar fragment was discovered in Greece.”

He added that the species’ extinction coincided with the emergence of modern humans, though it was difficult to say with certainty that men hunted stegodons.
