PSL T20 2016: Peshawar Zalmi beat Quetta Gladiators by 8 wickets

UPDATE: Peshawar Zalmi has taken revenge from Quetta Gladiators by defeating them with 8 wickets margin, that could have been most embarrassing defeat if Grant Elliot and Zulfiqar Babar would not have added 63 runs for the last wicket partnership.

What a brilliant spell bowled by Shahid Afridi (7-5) who took five wickets, giving away just 7 runs in his four overs. Quetta Gladiators lost their first wicket at 40 runs and they were 66-9 at one stage when Elliot and Babar came on to the field for rescue.

Chasing 130, was not proved a big deal for Zalmi’s and they reached the target comfortably in the end on the loss of two wickets. Shahid Afridi was given man of the match for his outstanding bowling figures.

The two top teams at the PSL T20 2016 points table are going to have a clash between them in Sharjah Cricket Stadium today.

Both these sides have already qualified for the play-offs, so win or lose, it won’t affect their entry to the next stage of the event.

Good news for Gladiators is that Kumar Sangakkara has also joined the camp after Grant Elliot. Shahid Afridi and his bowlers must have to get rid of him early; otherwise he can turn the situation drastically.

It is expected that these sides can try a different team combination by giving chance to two or three players who have been sitting on the bench for a while. Last time when they played against each other, Zalmi had to face  defeat and now they will really try to take revenge in order to prove their dominance.

Cricket gurus are predicting a final match between these two if the things continue this way and these sides keep top two positions on the point tables.

PSL T20 2016: Islamabad United Beat Karachi Kings by 5 wickets

UPDATE: Islamabad United beat Karachi Kings by five wickets in a low scoring game despite some difficulties early on. Karachi Kings was put into bat and restricted to just 129 runs and in reply Islamabad United were 19-3 at a moment, but then saved by Misbah ul Haq and Khalid Latif from complete damage.

The 16th match of the PSL T20 2016 will be a tough battle between Karachi Kings and Islamabad United today in Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The winning side will pave its way to qualify for the playoffs.

Kings and United are having equal points on the table and stand on the 3rd and 4th position respectively. Both these sides are struggling with lack of consistency in performance that has cost them defeats in the previous matches.

Shoaib Malik of Karachi Kings has been impressive and has made his team fight for victory but the results are not that satisfactory so far. A few changes have been experimented in the last two three games but they have not clicked.

On the other side, Captain Misbah is back in the United team but the all rounder Andre Russel is a big blow for the team Islamabad United who was already suffering from injuries. Secondly, their batsmen must keep the run rate up in middle and final overs; they get a good start often from their openers but they fail to convert it into a big score.

As it’s a day match (first one), toss will not be that crucial as it is in the evening matches because of the dew.

PSL T20 2016: Lahore Qalandars Beat Peshawar Zalmi by 4 runs

UPDATE: Lahore Qalandars got the much needed victory over Peshawar Zalmi in a close finish by just four runs. Cameron Delport proved a star for them in both batting and bowling.

Qalandars were invited to bat first by Shahid Afridi after winning the toss and placed a respectable total of 164 runs on the board despite Chris Gayle bowled out on a duck again. Cameron Delport 78 and Umar Akmal’s 52* helped Qalandars to set up a fighting total.

In reply, Zalmi ‘s kept loosing wickets and lost the match by 4 runs after nail biting finish. Qalanadars looked too impressive when they cam on to bowl and specially in fielding department. David Malan showed a resistance with his 42 runs while Cameron Delport and Keven Cooper took three wicket each.

Delport was awarded man of the match for his all round performance. Qalanadars has kept their hopes alive for this contest with this victory while Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators have already made their way to the play-offs.

Peshawar Zalmi , the top team of PSL T20 2016, will have a showdown with Lahore Qalandars today at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

This is the second match between both sides and Zalmi’s easily won the first one against Qalandars. This might be the last chance for Lahore Qalandars to keep their hopes alive for the contest. At present, they are at bottom of the points table.

The Qalandars will have to perform as a unit with the hunger of winning and aggression that’s missing in their play.

On the other side, Peshawar Zalmi is maintaining their winning streak in convincing fashion and entertaining their fans, so no worries for them, they are heading in the right direction.

Chris Gayle had a start with 30+ runs in the previous match and stayed on wicket for few overs, Qalandars really need his fireworks along with a sense of responsibility from Umar Akmal, because only they can lift up their side from this tough situation against the odds.

PSL T20 2016: Quetta Gladiators Beat Karachi Kings by 5 wickets

UPDATE: Quetta Gladiators has sealed the victory against Karachi Kings in a low scoring match by 5 wickets. Karachi Kings winning the toss and elected to bat first, could score only 126 runs of their 20 overs that were chased down by Gladiators . Ahmad Shahzad’s 41 runs and Sarfraz Ahmad’s 29* guided them to a comfortable victory in the end.

Grant Elliot proved to be a real star for Gladiators who took four wickets giving away just 15 runs (15-4) and received man of the match award.

Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators are going to play their second match of HBL PSL T20 2016 in Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Last time when both sides appeared against each other, Gladiators emerged victorious and they still have a psychological edge over the opponents, but they have to find out a solution to tackle Ravi Bopara in the batting line as well as the bowling.

Karachi Kings have been continuously rescued by Ravi Bopara who is in excellent shape, acing both, the batting game and the bowling. If Gladiators get him out early and play him sensibly, they can avoid the damage he can cause.

Both sides have won their last match played in this league so they are relief for this match and can play this match with ease and comfort.

People Prefer To Shop In Person For Valentine’s Day

Valentine's-day

Despite the global trend for one-click online commerce, when it comes to Valentine’s Day the personal touch is still paramount. According to the MasterCard Valentine’s Day Index, published on Thursday, 90% of gift transactions globally are made in person, rather than online.

Across the 200 countries studied across the Valentine’s Day period over three years (2013-2015), only 6% of all purchases were made via the web.

Valentine's Day spending is moving away from flowers and towards restaurants and hotels

But as well as shrugging off showrooming and apps, people are increasingly moving away from obvious material presents and towards experiences.

One-third of gifts were meals in restaurants and 28% hotel stays.

In the US, food appears to be the most important element of Valentine’s Day — 38% of spending is at restaurants. That figure jumps to 58% in Latin America where there is also a 92% spike in spending on flowers in the same period.

Europeans put a premium on luxury and in particular staying in a hotel (33%) and on eating well — 25% of purchases are made in restaurants.

Those in love in the Middle East are the most likely to buy jewelry, with 23% of purchasing; while in Asia and the Pacific Rim hotels (36%) and restaurants (24%) are top.

To arrive at its conclusions, MasterCard analyzed aggregated transaction information from credit and debit card use across categories of merchant usually associated with Valentine’s Day — such as florists, jewlers and travel agents. The data was gathered from transactions made between February 11-14 in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

PSL T20 2016: Peshawar Zalmi beat Islamabad United by 7 wickets

UPDATE: Peshawar ZZalmi got another easy success over Islamabad United by 7 wickets and now tops the points table.

At present, their team has shaped into perfect combination for T20 cricket just they need to focus more on the mistakes their bowlers are repeating. Islamabad United is struggling with the consistency in their performance as after magnificent win over Gladiators they fell flat in the next match.

Team United is missing Misbah ul Haq badly whose presence can make difference as he shows sense of responsibility in batting late down the order.

PEMRA Warns ARY Over Anti-Malala Hate Speech!

Pakistan’s TV regulator PEMRA on Friday censured a leading news channel for airing “hate speech” against Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and her family, warning that accusations of blasphemy could endanger lives.

Malala, who moved to England after being shot in the head by the Taliban, is both admired and hated in her native Pakistan where some conservatives view her as a Western agent on a mission to shame her country.

In its ruling, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) said that a programme aired by the 24-hour ARY news channel on February 7 used “indecent and uncivilised” language to describe the 18-year-old, branding her “a traitor, a blasphemer of Allah and the Prophet (Mohammad)”.

“The host and guests used such words about Malala Yousafzai and her family that undoubtedly fall under hate speech and use of such words are strictly banned under the law and constitution,” it said.

“Issuing certificates of treason and infidelity and declaring someone the enemy of the country or an enemy of Islam is not the job of TV anchors or the participants of a TV programme,” it added.

“They are broadcasting such material which could endanger someone’s life.”

Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 along with with India’s Kailash Satyarthi, a fellow education activist.

Hardline Islamists continue to revile the teen, who was shot in the head by Taliban insurgents in 2012 after she spoke out against them for opposing girls’ education.

However, there has also been an outpouring of invective from Pakistan’s middle classes, who may be keen to educate their daughters but who object to airing the country’s problems abroad.

The hatred towards her stems partly from religious conservatism and opposition to female empowerment, but also taps into scepticism towards a decade-long fight against militants which many Pakistanis regard as being imposed by United States.

Karachi’s DHA Phase VIII Enforced With Electronic Gates For Security

In a move to enhance security, Defense Housing Authority (DHA) Karachi has decided to enclose Phase VIII with security barriers on its all entry and exit points.

The residents of the Phase VIII will have stickers on their vehicle and before heading to the electronic gates, sensors at the barriers will read the e-tags and let the vehicle pass through. Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras will also be placed to monitor all vehicles entering in Phase VIII and there will be two different lanes for residents and visitors. However, visitors don’t need to have e-tag on their vehicle.

All this process will take a couple of month to be in effect and these entry points will work as a strict watchdog for motorcyclist. DHA administrator Brigadier Zubair Ahmed said on this issue “We can’t install electronic gates and e-tagging mechanism on all 40-43 gates of entire DHA Karachi, but we can isolate Phase VIII that was much needed due to increasing number of mobile snatching and other street crime incidents have been reported in that area previously.

UPDATE:The all round performance of Ravi Bopara soared another victory for Karachi Kings who defeated Lahore Qalandars by 27 runs easily in the end. Karachi Kings set a target of 179 runs for Qalandars which they fell short of despite 90 runs opening stand in first 10 overs.

The Kings and Qalandars will be once again in action today against each other in 12th match of PSL T20 2016 in Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Both teams are under performing in this tournament and by far only have one victory to their credit after playing against all four teams. For this match Karachi Kings has a psychological edge over Lahore Qalandars as they only game they won was against Azhar Ali and company.

A huge crowd is expected to come in to see this match as Friday is weekly holiday in UAE, so a jam packed Sharjah stadium would be anticipating a thrilling contest.

If we look into previous performances, Karachi Kings despite of losses, have at least put up a fight in every match , but Lahore Qalandars’ matches have been one sided and they struggled to show some classy cricket except Umar Akmal’s blistering innings against Gladiators.

Lahore Qalandars is again relying on Umar Akmal and let see if he lives up to expectations, otherwise it’s a must win game for both rival sides to keep them inn in the competition.

A Glimpse At Einstein’s Gravitational Waves

In a landmark discovery for physics and astronomy, international scientists said Thursday they have glimpsed the first direct evidence of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time, which Albert Einstein predicted a century ago.

When two black holes collided some 1.3 billion years ago, the joining of those two great masses sent forth a wobble that hurtled through space and arrived at Earth on September 14, 2015, when it was picked up by sophisticated instruments, researchers announced.

“Like Galileo first pointing his telescope upward, this new view of the sky will deepen our understanding of the cosmos, and lead to unexpected discoveries,” said France Cordova, director of the US National Science Foundation, which funded the work.

The phenomenon was observed by two US-based underground detectors, designed to spot tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves, a project known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO.

It took scientists months to verify their data and put it through a process of peer-review before announcing it on Thursday, marking the culmination of decades of efforts by teams around the world.

gravitational

“LIGO has ushered in the birth of an entirely new field of astrophysics,” said Cordova.

Gravitational waves are a measure of strain in space, an effect of the motion of large masses that stretches the fabric of space-time — a way of viewing space and time as a single, interweaved continuum.

They travel at the speed of light and cannot be stopped or blocked by anything.

Einstein said space-time could be compared to a net, bowing under the weight of an object. Gravitational waves would be like ripples that emanate from a pebble thrown in a pond.

While scientists have previously been able to calculate gravitational waves, they had never before seen one directly.

Wobbling like jelly

According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) David Shoemaker, the leader of the LIGO team, it looked just like physicists thought it would.

“The waveform that we can calculate based on Einstein’s theory of 1916 matches exactly what we observed in 2015,” David Shoemaker, the leader of the LIGO team, told AFP.

“It looked like a chirp, it looked at something that started at low frequencies — for us low frequencies means 20 or 30 hertz, that’s like the lowest note on a bass guitar, sweeping very rapidly up over just a fraction of a second… up to 150 hertz or so, sort of near middle C on a piano.”

The chirp “corresponded to the orbit of these two black holes getting smaller and smaller, and the speed of the two objects going faster and faster until the two became a single object,” he explained.

“And then right at the end of this waveform, we see the wobbling of the final black hole as if it were made of jelly as it settled into a static state.”

Underground detectors

The L-shaped LIGO detectors — each about 1.5 kilometers (four kilometers) long — were conceived and built by researchers at MIT and Caltech.

One is located in Hanford, Washington, and the other is in Livingston, Louisiana. A third detector, called VIRGO, is scheduled to open in Italy later this year.

Tuck Stebbins, head of the gravitational astrophysics laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center, described the detectors as the “most complex machines humans have ever built.”

Both LIGO and VIRGO have undergone major upgrades in recent years.

Physicist Benoit Mours of France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), which is leading the VIRGO team along with Italian colleagues, described the discovery as “historic” because it “allows us to directly verify one of the predictions of the theory of general relativity.”

Physicists said the gravitational wave detected at 1651 GMT on September 14 originated in the last fraction of a second before the fusion of two black holes somewhere in the southern sky, though they can’t say precisely where.

Einstein had predicted such a phenomenon would occur when two black holes collided, but it had never before been observed. An analysis by the MIT and Caltech found that the two black holes joined about 1.3 billion years ago, and their mass was 29-36 times greater than the Sun.

The wave arrived first at the Louisiana detector, then at the Washington instrument 7.1 milliseconds later. The two instruments are 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometers) apart, and since both made the same reading, scientists consider their discovery confirmed.

New era

“Black holes are interesting because they do not give off any light and that is why these particular objects had never been seen before — because all of the astrophysical instruments to date use light,” said Shoemaker.

“So this is one of the ways in which this tool is special and unique in the astronomical toolkit.”

He said the new data “can really help to explain the formation of galaxies and overall large scale structures of the material in the universe.”

Details of the discovery are being published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Indirect proof of gravitational waves was found in 1974 through the study of a pulsar and a neutron star. Scientists Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor won the Nobel Prize for physics for that work in 1993.

“Humanity has now another tool for exploring the universe,” Stebbins told AFP.

“This is like the perfect outcome. The door is open to new discoveries,” he added. “This is a new era in astrophysics.”

Single People Turn To Social Media For Valentine’s Day

Valentine's-day-2016

Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are becoming crucial tools for sending Valentine’s wishes, especially for those without a partner. According to a SOASTA survey conducted by Harris Poll, 79% of under 18s and 71% of adults in the US will be wishing someone a happy Valentine’s Day this year.

Married couples are the least likely to send Valentine's Day wishes via social media

And while married couples are most likely to opt for traditional methods such as buying and sending cards to each other, 40% of single adults will be turning to social media to express their love. That’s more than under 18s (37%) and those with a husband or wife (28%).

SOASTA’s study was conducted online and polled 2046 adults aged 18 or over and 1,158 youths aged from 8-18.
