BlackBerry Focuses On Software As Handset Business Falls

As BlackBerry’s restructuring program continues with the announcement of 200 job cuts, the Canadian smartphone maker has seen miserably low handset sales with barely a handful of devices still on the market. As a result, BlackBerry seems to be changing direction, shifting focus to applications for consumers and services for business.

BlackBerry now only has a tiny market share of global smartphone sales, reaching a paltry 0.3% in Q3 2015, according to Gartner research firm. However, the software sector — more specifically business security software — is becoming a more fruitful field for the brand, which has been forced to diversify its activity.

BlackBerry switches to Android

BlackBerry ditched its homegrown operating system with the arrival of the Priv smartphone, released in 2015, a device designed to transition the brand to the Android OS. However, BlackBerry has allowed the use of Android applications on its phones since the 10.2.1 update to its OS in early 2014.

The BlackBerry Priv (short for “Private”) is a phablet that twins a 5.4-inch touchscreen (2560 x 1440 pixels) with a slide-out mechanical keyboard. Pitched at the high end of the market, this smartphone has an 18-megapixel main camera with autofocus and image stabilizer and is capable of filming 4K video.

Blackberry to Continue Operations in Pakistan

The handset comes with NFC connectivity and promises around 22 hours of battery life with mixed use. It comes preloaded with several applications dedicated to privacy and security. As always with BlackBerry, this smartphone is designed as much for consumers as it is for business users. The BlackBerry Priv is out now, priced at €779 SIM-free ($699 in the USA).

A look towards services

Following in the footsteps of the Priv, a second Android smartphone is said to be in the works for 2016. Other than that, there’s no more information about BlackBerry’s upcoming handsets, and it increasingly seems that the company’s focus is on services — particularly for businesses, the brand’s historical client base. Now that BlackBerry has definitively lost the battle on the hardware front, the firm’s only real option is to fight back in the world of software.

So while BlackBerry may not be phasing out its smartphones just yet, the firm’s handsets seem destined to become increasingly few and far between as the months go by.

Pakistan on Wednesday dropped opener Ahmed Shehzad for this month’s Asia Cup and World Twenty20 as they announced a 15-man squad for the two major events.

After a hiatus of 10 months, Gul was selected in the national team’s squad in recently concluded series against New Zealand. In this series, Gul could not show much of his magic bowling and almost all the bowlers disappointed fans.

Chinese New Year 2016: Online ‘Red Envelopes’ Sales Rocket

Billions of online money transfers have taken place in China as the ancient Lunar New Year tradition of handing out red envelopes of cash met the Internet age.

For centuries parents, relatives and employers have handed out “hong bao” — small gifts of money — to children or menial workers to celebrate the dawn of the new year.

But in increasingly tech-savvy China, givers are abandoning the red paper envelopes and opting instead to transfer money via their mobile phone.

On Sunday, the eve of the Year of the Monkey, a staggering eight billion hong bao were exchanged, eight times the number gifted last year, Internet giant Tencent said.

The idea of electronic hong bao was introduced in recent years by WeChat, a mobile messaging system with over 650 million users and operated by Tencent, China’s largest Internet service portal.

The service took off and competitors soon joined the fray.

Now Alipay Wallet, the payment system run by online retail giant Alibaba, and Tencent are going head to head for a share of the online payments.

Alipay currently has 70 percent of the overall online payment market — which also includes bill settlement and internet shopping — with Tencent accounting for 20 percent.

It’s a high-stakes game in China, where online mobile payments were worth some 2.420 billion yuan ($368 million) in the third quarter of last year, local media reported, cited market research group iResearch Consulting as saying.

Even China’s Communist Party has got in on the action in an attempt to court web users.

To win a share of 300,000 yuan-worth of electronic “red envelopes” offered by the party on Alipay, users must first enter phrases coined by President Xi Jinping.

Johnny Depp to Star in Remake of ‘The Invisible Man’

Johnny Depp has been confirmed to star in Universal’s remake of “The Invisible Man”, reports Deadline. The first film, an adapation of the H.G. Wells novel, was released back in 1933 and starred Claude Rains as the scientist who discovers a way to make himself invisible.

The project will be led by writer and producer Alex Kurtzman, who has previously worked on “Transformers”, “The Amazing Spider-man 2”, and “Star Trek”.

No release date for the film has yet been confirmed.

Depp can next be seen in “Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

100 Million Pakistanis Deprived of Financial Services

About 5% of the world’s un-banked population resides in Pakistan. According to a feature story published by World Bank, nearly 100 million adult Pakistanis are still deprived of formal and regulated financial services which mean they are unable to take advantages offered by transaction accounts such as savings, payments, insurance and credit which can improve their lifestyle and reduce poverty.

Pakistan launched a National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) in May 2015 in order to achieve universal financial access and spread formal financial access to at least 50% of adults, including women and youth. The NFIS also aimed to increase the percentage of SME loans in bank lending to 15% by 2020.

The National Financial Inclusion Strategy is formulated to promote digital transaction accounts and reach scale through bulk payments, expand and diversify access points, improve capacity of financial service providers and increase levels of financial awareness and capability.

Pakistan’s Financial Access Statistics released by World Bank are as follows:

Only 13% of Pakistani adults have a formal account, according to Global Findex 2014.
Less than 5% of women are included in the formal financial sector, compared to South Asia’s average of 37%.
More than 100 million Pakistanis are unbanked; they account for 5% of the world’s unbanked population.
5 million of Pakistani adults cite distance to a financial institution as a barrier to opening a financial account.

The use of digital financial instruments is low.

9 % of adults in Pakistan have a debit card, and only 1% of adults use them to make payments.
Only 1.4% of adults use an account to receive wages and 1.8% of adults use it to receive government transfers in 2014.
At the same time, Pakistan is leading the way in South Asia in digital finance and branchless banking.
6% of adults have mobile accounts, compared to South Asia’s average of less than 2.6%.
The financing needs of MSMEs are unmet by the formal financial sector.
Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) receive only 7 % of total bank credit to the private sector.
There are 3.2 million SMEs, but only approximately 188,000 SME loans outstanding on banks’ books.

T20 World Cup 2016: Pakistan May Not Play?

Pakistan may not be participating in the forthcoming World T20 if the government fails to provide security clearance to the Pakistani cricket team in order to travel to India since ICC does not plan to arrange matches at a neutral venue; i.e. Dubai And Sri Lanka.

A new team may be asked to participate in the month-long ICC World Twenty 20 that starts on March 8^th; told an Indian cricket administrator who attended International Cricket Council meeting in Dubai last week.

“At the ICC board meeting, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan did inform that his side’s participation in the event was subject to government clearance. There was no further discussion as far as I remember,” the official said.

Nawaz Sharif’s government may not permit the team to play a match in India since it faced security threats, stated Khan in the meeting.

“It is pretty expected that ICC holds Pakistan matches on neutral venue,” told the PCB chief to Pakistani media while referring to threats made by the Shiv Sena.

ICC T20 World Cup Twenty20 2016 Will Not Be Held in Dehli, India?

The ICC refused the comment and there is uncertainty regarding the not just the men’s team but also the women’s team, who too, will battle it out for the largest prize in the shortest game format.

“The ICC or the organising committee has not received any written information from the PCB which says they will not participate in the WT20 in India,” the organizing committee official stated.

ICC allowed Pakistan two more days to name the squad following the request made by PCB on Monday; the official stated. Pakistan will be naming its players by today, February 10^th.

The 6^th World T20 edition is spread over Indian cities; however Pakistan will be playing league matches in Dharamsala, Kolkata and Mohali as these places were considered safe for the visitors.

The semifinal will be played in Delhi and Mumbai; however if Pakistan finishes amongst the last four, the Indian Capital will be hosting the game. The final match will be played on April 3rd in Kolkata.

When asked about the possibility of the Pakistan government refusing permission to the team, an Indian official said, “You would have noticed in the ongoing under-19 World Cup, it has gone ahead without Australia which pulled out due to security concerns. Ireland was invited to replace Australia.”

Cricketing ties between the two sides are totally strained. A dual series to be hosted by Pakistan in 2015 was delayed when the PCB turned down India’s offer to host matches and the Board of Control for cricket in India denied to play at a neutral venue.

Rs 10, 50, 100 & 1,000 Old Design Banknotes Not to be Circulated – SBP

In a press release announced by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the bank notes with the old design for Rs 10, 50, 100 and 1,000 will cease to be legal tender effective from 1st December 2016.

The old designs of the aforementioned bank notes will not be printed or be in circulation starting from December 2016.

State Bank of Pakistan also stated that the first design of the new design series was released in the year 2005 for the denomination of Rs 20 for the sake of longevity, security and aesthetic appearance of the bank notes.

SBP Rejects All Rumors of Redesigned Currency Notes

The press release went like this, “The process of issuance of complete series of new design banknotes comprising eight denominations (Rs 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000) was completed in 2008. The commercial/micro finance banks will accept the old design banknotes of Rs 10, 50, 100 and 1000 and exchange the same with the new design banknotes and coins of all denominations up to 30th November 2016 only.”

SBP has announced that 30th November, 2016 is the last day to exchange the bank notes with the old design whereas the Rs 10, 50, 100 and 1,000 will be accepted by the SBP BSC field offices from the masses until 31st December, 2021.

Mobilink No.1 Telco With 36 Million Customers

According to Pakistan Telecommunications Authority’s (PTA) recently released report on the industry, Mobilink has further strengthened its number one position; qualitatively and quantitatively. The Telco not only leads the industry in terms of overall subscriber base (36.21 million customers), 3G users (7.2 million), and 3G speeds in every city but is also the fastest growing 3G network in the country. Mobilink has also done exceedingly well under PTA’s annual Quality of Service (QoS) survey by surpassing almost all key performance indicators set by the industry regulator.

“Over the past year we have invested a sizeable chunk of our profits back into network up-gradation, thus it is good to see our endeavors have surpassed the industry’s benchmarks,” said Jeffrey Hedberg, CEO & President – Mobilink. “The Quality of Service results published by Pakistan Telecommunications Authority are proof of Mobilink’s commitment to the provision of high-end services to customers across the country.”

For the 3G KPIs under the survey, Mobilink topped in every criteria. The Telco averaged a download speed of 4,044 Kbps on HTTP servers while averaging 3,174 Kbps on FTP servers throughout the country, hence strengthening its claim to being the fastest 3G network in the country.

These results are a reflection of Mobilink’s continuous efforts to provide a high quality of services through network up-gradation and maintenance. Over the past year, the Telco has invested in the provision of HD voice calls on its network, network expansion to towns up North, and a first of its kind upgrade of its existing network to the state of the art 100 Gbps Optical Transport Network (OTN).

PIA Ticket Prices Decrease After Employees End Strike

Pakistan‘s airports have been enmeshed in chaos nationwide since the strike kicked off that grounded international and domestic flights and left thousands of passengers stranded.

Last week, two employees were killed and several others wounded at Karachi’s international airport when clashes broke out between security forces and staff.

“We are calling off the strike today,” Sohail Baloch, the chairman of PIA’s joint action committee of employees, told a press conference in Karachi on Tuesday.

PIA Flight Operations Suspended Indefinitely!

Baloch also encouraged his colleagues to return to their jobs with “full commitment and spirit”.

He said his team was set to travel to Lahore on Tuesday night to hold talks with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the brother of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

A PIA spokesman said that more than 50 percent of the carrier’s operations were restored on Tuesday.

In December, Islamabad announced it would complete the partial sale of the carrier by July, following years of crushing losses and mismanagement that have battered the airline‘s reputation.

PIA, one of the world’s leading airlines until the 1970s, now suffers from frequent cancellations and delays and has been involved in numerous controversies over the years, including the jailing of a drunk pilot in Britain in 2013.

Om Puri-Nandita Separate After 26 Years!

Legendary Bollywood star Om Puri has separated from his wife Nandita after 26 years of marriage. 2016 doesn’t seem like a good year for love, or should we say, lovers! While people are still getting over the Ranbir-Katrina, Farhan-Adhuna and Virat-Anushka, comes the news of Bollywood’s veteran actor Om Puri ending 26-year-long marriage with wife Nandita.

A court order last week granted Om Puri and Nandita a judicial separation, as reported by DNA.

This decree, in law, gives the couple liberty to go separate ways whilst remaining legally married. However, the only restriction imposed on the communication between the two is that they cannot meet without the presence of a third party.

Nonetheless, the court has given the veteran actor visiting rights to his 18-year-old son, Ishaan.

Om Puri will have visiting rights to his 18-year-old son Ishaan as the couple has decided to live separately after things turned ugly between them following her biography of the actor. “The court order came last week. It was a clash of our sensibilities. This happens with people so there is nothing unusual in it. Nandita and I are supposed to talk only regarding Ishaan’s education and welfare,” Puri said.

His lawyer Jalaja Nambiar said the couple will have separate lives without divorce. “Mr Puri wanted divorce but because things started going here and there, he opted for an amicable settlement and the court granted them judicial separation under which they are a married couple legally but have their separate lives and cannot interfere in each other’s matter,” she said.

Nandita, who had earlier filed a domestic violence case against Om Puri, seemed more positive. “There were no terms. Everything happened peacefully. We are living separately till we get back. We have withdrawn all the cases against each other,” she said. When asked whether she was hopeful about getting back, she said, “I don’t know.”

Nandita and Puri’s differences came out in open with the release of his biography Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri that his wife wrote. Puri felt Nandita exposed his past relationships in the book in a disrespectful manner.

Pakistani Hockey Player Arsalan Qadir Defeats India in South Asian Games 2016

In a thrilling hockey match between India and Pakistan, Arsalan Qadir one of the talented players of national hockey team scored two goals and defeated India in South Asian Games 2016.

Just after 11 minutes into the game, Qadir scored a goal giving Pakistan an edge over India. Pakistan’s position further strengthened when Qadir scored another goal.

Indian player did try to make a comeback in the game when their player Mandeep Antil entered in the Pakistan’s half and hit a goal that too on the 53^rd minute of the game. In response, all Pakistani players were alerted and safeguarded their goal area to avoid a last minute crash.

This is the second victory for Pakistan and they are all set and ready to go ahead in this competition with a lot of confidence and fervour.

Meanwhile, Wrestler Mohammad Inam secured the second gold medal for Pakistan in the South Asian Games by defeating India’s Gopal Yadav 3-1 in the 86kg event on Sunday.

Pakistan has won a total of 13 medals uptill now — 2 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 7 bronze medals; India leads the Games with 28 gold medals and Sri Lanka lies second place with 8.

Google Drive Offering 2GB Of Free Storage To Celebrate Safer Internet Day

Google has brought back another incentive to celebrate the Safer Internet Day 2016. The user gets a data reward entirely free of up to 2GB of extra storage space if they’re willing to do a security review of their accounts which only takes a few minutes.

Google had offered the exact deal last year as well, and those who managed to get some free Google Drive storage can easily follow the process one more time to acquire additional 2GB free space.

The Google account reviewing includes connected devices, permitted services, the account recovery options and a 2-step verification setting drill. The free storage prompt doesn’t show up right away but it does increase the storage space.

It is imperative to note that with the online data increasing day by day, for such free storage services, one should always have stronger passwords and 2-factor authentication process both ensure that the data is more secure and safe.

The reason behind all this is to promote ‘Safer Internet Day’. With more and more data appearing online in services like Google Drive, ensuring strong passwords and two-factor authentication being enabled whenever possible, are ways one can keep the data more safe and secure.

Pakistan Out From U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016

Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaign ended for Pakistan after the 5 wicket defeat by West Indies in the quarter-final stage, reported ARY News.

Pakistan chose to bat first and struggled at 57/5 when wicketkeeper Salman Fayyaz made 164 runs at the 6th position and made the team reach 227/6 in 50 overs.

Umair Masood made 114 runs off 114 balls including 15 fours and 2 sixes. Salman Fayyaz on the other hand made 58 runs from 79 balls including 3 boundaries.

West Indies reached the target of 229 in 40 overs; Tevin Imlach scored 54 runs from 76 balls while Shimron Hetmyer made 52 runs from 42 balls.

Pakistan’s Sameen Gul, Ahmad Shafiq and Shadab Khan dismissed one batsman each while Shamar Springer made 37 runs as well.

Instagram Now Lets You See More Than One Account

Instagram have announced that starting this week, users will now be able to view more than one account on the same device. Announcing the long-awaited news on their website, Instagram gives instructions on how to add an additional account in profile settings, and simply tap your usernames to switch accounts.

The profile photo of the account you are using will appear in different places throughout the app, so you always know which one you are posting to, avoiding any confusion.

Instagram have also added more information on their Instagram Help Center to help users with the new feature.

The account switching will be made available as part of Instagram version 7.15 for iOS and Android.
