Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday inaugurated 193-kilometres long Gwadar-Turbat-Hoshab Motorway in Balochistan. The portion of motorway, mostly constructed by engineers of Frontier Works Organization (FWO) to serve all Gwadar-bound traffic, is a vital part of western, central and eastern routes of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, he said the government is constructing a network of roads to connect all parts of the country with each other for development. “These projects will bring huge benefits for the country and it will also connect Pakistan with Central Asia, China and Afghanistan,” the PM said.

The Prime Minister said the project has great importance for the development of the country. He said Balochistan is being given preference for development, and equal allocations are being made for the province.

He also announced three road projects, saying that Quetta-Khuzdar highway will be dualised, and work on Baseema-Khuzdar, Shahdadkot highway and Bela-Awaran highways will start soon. Nawaz Sharif said several projects have been initiated to link Gwadar with the rest of the country.

The Prime Minister referred to mega projects like Diamer Bhasha dam, Dasu Dam and Bunji project and said each of them would generate 4000 mw of electricity. Nawaz Sharif lauded Army Chief General Raheel Sharif for his wholehearted support for addressing problems of Balochistan and welfare of its people.

The 870 km motorway has been completed with the cost of 13 billion rupees in 18 months. According to ISPR, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif arrived at Hoshab today to inspect the new roads being built by army engineers and FWO with an “amazing pace and quality of work.”

The army chief held meetings with Governor, CM and Chief Secretary Balochistan before the inauguration.

Pakistan’s oldest test cricket player, Israr Ali passed away at the age of 88, today. Born on 1^st May 1927 in Jalandhar- India, Israr Ali was an all-rounder and part of Pakistan’s first Test squad that played two test matches in India in 1952.

Ali was also part of the first test match played by Pakistan 60 years ago. It is reported that Ali passed away on Tuesday in Okara, Punjab, his hometown.

Ali was a medium- fast bowler and played in two test matches in 1959 against Australia before ending his test career with 6 wickets. He was part of 40 first class matches and took 114 wickets, making 1,130 runs at an average of 20.54.

Before him, Aslam Khokar was the oldest living test cricketer until he died at the age of 91 in January last year. After his death, Ali got the honor of being the oldest test cricketer alive, at the age of 88. Israr Ali started his career in 1946-47, playing for Punjab.

Historians of cricket noted that Israr Ali’s foreign career came to a sudden end after an incident with his captain Abdul Kardar leading to a major misunderstanding. Abdul Kardar was the most powerful man in the Pakistani cricket arena at that time.

Ali gained popularity in the two test matches played where he dismissed the opener Les Favell in all four innings, without taking any help from fielders.

He stayed a significant member of Pakistan’s selection committee in 1983-84 before finally bidding farewell to cricket in 1984.

Intizar Hussain, Pakistan’s ‘Greatest Fiction Writer’ Dies at 92

Pakistani author Intizar Hussain, widely recognized as one of the greatest Urdu writers in history, died on Tuesday aged 92 in the eastern city of Lahore, according to his doctor, following a period of illness.

The prolific author was known for his novels, short stories, columns and poetry and belatedly saw worldwide recognition when he was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2013 and was awarded France’s “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” a year later.

Born on December 7, 1923 in Dibai, India, he migrated to the newly formed Pakistan in 1947 — an experience he wrote about 50 years later in “The First Morning”.

The short story captured the horror and optimism that accompanied the Partition of India where an estimated 14 million people were displaced, the largest mass migration in human history.

The history of Pakistan and the subcontinent was also the setting for his acclaimed novel “Basti”, published in 1979 and later translated into English.

He was also a regular literary columnist for Pakistan’s leading English-language daily Dawn, and in later years became known as a voice of moderation and advocate of what he saw as the subcontinent’s ancient traditions of pluralism and tolerance.

Fellow Urdu writer Munnu Bhai told AFP: “Intizar Hussain was a man of letters. His death has left a huge gap in the literary circle of the subcontinent that would be felt of the centuries to come.”

Hussain’s wife, Aliya Begum, died in 2004 and the couple had no children.
