BBC Website Hacked & Temporarily Unavailable for Hours

The renowned British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website remained inaccessible for many hours on Thursday following a hacking incident.

The BBC officially reported on the incident saying,“Sources within the BBC said the sites were offline thanks to what is known as a ‘distributed denial of service’ (DDOS) attack.”

Apparently, the DDOS attacks aim to suspend an online network by bombarding it with traffic from various sources.

The traffic trying to view BBC.com were being shown the “The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy” message.

However, the BBC maintained that this was a technical issue in nature that was being worked upon. “We’re aware of a technical issue affecting the BBC website and are working to fix this now.”

After a while, it shared “The BBC website is now back up and operating normally.” Even though it was not resolved.

As per the statistics, the international version of the BBC website along with its app had recently gained 101 million readers in November 2015.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was met with a grave situation on the morning of 31st December when he landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport  (RGIA) in Hyderabad. As soon as he landed, he was not permitted entrance and was told to go back to Abu Dhabi via the same Emirates flight he had arrived in. He was due to work his vocal magic at the Taj Falaknuma Palace especially for the New Year’s Eve occasion.

This predicament was associated with the immigration regulations which allows Pakistanis to go to India via Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai only.

According to an official, this was the reason the acclaimed singer was turned back,“That’s why the singer was asked to return to Abu Dhabi and travel to the city through the valid entry points,”

He also mentioned, “If a Pakistani national enters through any other airport, except the four metros, his/her travel to India cannot be recorded. So it is mandatory that they stick to the four ports. This system has been put in place to monitor the movement of Pakistani nationals in and out of the country.”

Yet the immigration officials maintained that the documents had an issue which led to Khan’s deportation. RFAK was due to perform at a Sufi music event to help promote the cultural heritage of Hyderabad.

However, the event officials obtained clearance for RFAK to be able to return and perform at the rescheduled event.

A 5-star Dubai hotel became engulfed in flames as the city was preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with 16 people receiving injuries. Firefighters bravely battled the fire at the 302-meter tall Address Downtown Dubai.

According to CNN, the fire broke out in a residence on the building’s 20th floor when curtains caught on fire.

Bruce Szczepanski, who watched from the balcony of a nearby hotel, said he could still hear parts of the building crashing to the ground more than nine hours after the blaze began.

WhatsApp Goes Down On New Year’s Eve

WhatsApp users across the globe faced issues while connecting to WhatsApp on the New Year’s Eve yesterday; the services were impacted for several hours before returning to normal.

A WhatsApp representative told Gadgets 360, “Earlier today, some people had trouble accessing WhatsApp. We investigated the problem and have restored access for everyone. We apologize for the inconvenience and wish everyone a happy new year,”

Users resorted to Twitter to make complaints about the problems connecting to WhatsApp.

The voice calling and messaging clients seemed to have faced issues while sending and receiving messages on iOS and Android. A real-time service outage monitor, DownDetector, reported several issues as well.

Around 10 pm on Thursday, users noted that they were unable to send their messages across; even though it could be a temporary glitch due to the massive spike in traffic on New Year’s Eve. This day is marked to be of record traffic for the app.

The WhatsApp Status Twitter handle was mute on the interruption.

WhatsApp had announced in September that it had reached about 900 million active monthly users milestone. WhatsApp is the most widely used instant messaging application.

Instead of brightly painted flags on cheeks, it’s all about who has the trendiest green profile pictures this year. Instead of huge green flags waving from every house, it’s about who has the better cover photo.
