Mystery Disease Claims 17 Lives in Indian-Occupied Kashmir

The authorities in India-occupied Jammu and Kashmir were investigating a mysterious disease that has caused the deaths of 17 people, local media reports said on Saturday. The deaths, including those of 13 children, occurred in the remote village of Badhaal, Rajouri, in the Jammu area since early December. The village was declared a containment zone earlier this week, with approximately 230 people quarantinedthe Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported.

Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, who heads Rajouri’s government medical college, stated that all casualties had damage to the brain and nervous system. “The winter vacations have also been cancelled to address the medical alert situation,” PTI quoted Bhatia.
>According to the latest news, the federal government has launched an investigation, with Health Minister Jitendra Singh saying that an initial probe suggests the deaths were “not due to any infection, virus, or bacteria, but rather a toxin.”

“There is a long series of toxins being tested. I believe a solution will be found soon. Additionally, if there was any mischief or malicious activity, that is also being investigated,” PTI quoted Singh.
>In another medical incident, the authorities in the western city of Pune recorded at least 73 cases of a rare nerve disease. Those infected with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) include 26 women.
14 of the patients are on ventilator support, PTI quoted an official. As per the World Health Organisation, in GBS, a person’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. Apple iPhone 17 Air to Feature Camera Bar in Bold New Design

Apple iPhone 17 Air to Feature Camera Bar in Bold New Design

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air is reportedly set to feature a major design shift. According to leaks, the slimline device will include a camera bar running across the rear. This elongated module will hold a single lens, a flash and a microphone cutout, mimicking the design seen in Google’s Pixel series. The aesthetic marks a significant departure for Apple, offering a fresh look for their flagship model.

Another big change comes with Apple Intelligence, a generative AI suite set to become the default setting for compatible devices. This integration will roll out with macOS Sequoia 15.3, iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3. Users can disable the feature later, but it highlights Apple’s commitment to AI-driven tools like machine learning and natural language processing to enhance user experiences.

Despite these innovations, Apple faces challenges in China. Recent data from Counterpoint Research shows iPhone sales dropped by 18.2% in Q4 2024, reducing Apple’s market share to 17.1%. Local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi have surpassed Apple with 18.1% and 17.2% shares, respectively.

On a brighter note, Apple continues to expand its health features. The AirPods Pro 2 hearing test feature, already available in the US, will soon launch in the UK. After regulatory approval from the Department of Health and Social Care, Apple plans to release updated software enabling this feature in the coming weeks.

Google’s Gemini is Already Winning the Next-Gen Assistant Wars

Google’s Gemini is Already Winning the Next-Gen Assistant Wars

Google’s Gemini is becoming the next-gen virtual assistant to beat, and its competitors like Siri, Alexa and even ChatGPT are struggling to keep up. Gemini’s deep integration into Android devices and Google’s ecosystem is making it the default choice for millions of users, signalling a shift in how we interact with AI-powered assistants.

The Power of Integration

One of Gemini’s most significant advantages is its seamless integration. Unlike standalone AI apps such as ChatGPT or Claude, Gemini is embedded directly into devices and Google’s services. For instance, on Samsung’s latest phones, holding down the side button now activates Gemini instead of Samsung’s Bixby—a significant upgrade for users seeking a more capable assistant.

A Samsung integration helps make Google's Gemini the AI assistant to beat - The Verge

For integration, it transcends smartphone dimensions. The device now sits as core in Google Workspace, Gmail, Docs, YouTube, and Drive, bringing most workflows directly together. This ease of execution saves users more input on tedious tasks from this device. Due to such power and availability, Gemini is undoubtedly light years ahead of its closest counterparts.

Distribution = Winning

Its strategy relies on its enormous user base. For Gemini, user data is not only a tool but a feature in the lives of billions. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, put it nicely: “All seven of our products and platforms with more than two billion monthly users use Gemini models.” This phenomenal reach feeds vast user data that fuels rapid improvements and further reifies its lead.

While competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have strong foundational models, they lack Gemini’s ubiquity. AI assistants that require separate apps and logins are at a disadvantage compared to Gemini’s one-click accessibility.

The next-generation of Google TV is on the way with an improved Gemini that'll make smarter and better | TechRadar

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Gemini is not without its weaknesses. Like any other AI system, it sometimes produces errors or nonsensical responses. However, Google’s ability to iterate quickly and its tight integration with Android gives it an edge. Unlike Siri, which cannot adapt, or Alexa, which has experienced delays in updates, Gemini is constantly evolving.

The Future of Virtual Assistants

As the AI era unfolds, the most entrenched assistant in users’ daily routines will win. Google’s playbook, which is based on distribution, integration, and data-driven improvement, is working well. Gemini is not only competing in the AI assistant space but is redefining it. For now, Google’s approach to virtual assistants seems nearly insurmountable.

Bank of Japan Increases Interest Rates to Highest Level in 17 Years

Bank of Japan Increases Interest Rates to Highest Level in 17 Years

Japan’s central bank has raised borrowing costs to their highest point in 17 years, following a surge in consumer prices in December. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has adjusted its short-term policy rate to “approximately 0.5 per cent.” This measure came shortly after new economic data revealed that prices increased at the highest rate in 16 months last month.
The BOJ’s previous interest rate increase in July, coupled with a disappointing jobs report from the United States, surprised global investors and led to a selloff in the stock market.

Governor Kazuo Ueda had previously indicated that this latest rate hike would mitigate the risk of another market disruption. Official statistics released on Friday indicated that core consumer prices in Japan rose by 3% in December compared to the same month the previous year. This decision represents the BOJ’s first rate increase since July, which occurred just days after Donald Trump resumed his presidency. During his campaign, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on all imports to the US, which could affect exporting nations like Japan.

Read More: Japan Prepares for Megaquake- Does it Need to?

Reason behind the Increased Rate

By increasing rates now, the bank aims to create more flexibility to lower rates in the future to stimulate the economy. This action underscores the central bank’s intention to gradually raise rates to around 1%. The  BOJ has indicated that interest rates will continue to rise from their historically low levels. Neil Newman, head of strategy at Astris Advisory Japan, stated, “Rates will continue to rise as wages increase, inflation remains above 2%, and there is some growth in the economy.” Stefan Angrick, a Japan economist at Moody’s Analytics, added, “We anticipate another 25-basis point increase in six months.” Last year, the BOJ raised borrowing costs for the first time since 2007, ending a prolonged period of low rates as the country faced stagnant price growth. This increase eliminated the last remaining countries with negative interest rates, a situation where individuals must pay to deposit money in banks.

Despite societal challenges, these women have made significant strides in education, research, and leadership, inspiring future generations. They stand before us, proving that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. They are role models and inspirations for every Pakistani girl who dreams big.

Dr. Nergis Mavalvala

Dr. Nergis Mavalvala is a Pakistani-American astrophysicist. She has garnered international acclaim for her groundbreaking work in gravitational wave detection. As a key member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) team, she played a pivotal role in the first observation of gravitational waves in 2015. This was a discovery that confirmed a major prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Beyond her research, Dr. Mavalvala serves as the Dean of the MIT School of Science, where she continues to inspire and mentor aspiring scientists.

Despite these achievements, Pakistani women in academia face numerous obstacles. A study highlights that gender disparity perceptions often hinder women from demonstrating their capabilities, affecting their self-esteem and future ambitions. Programmes like the Pakistan Women Leadership in Higher Education aim to equip and empower women at different stages of faculty and leadership development.

On this International Education Day, we celebrate the resilience and achievements of Pakistani women in academia. Their contributions have not only enriched the educational landscape of our country but also inspired future generations to keep striving.

When you teach a man, you educate a man, but when you teach a woman, you educate a generation.

Oscar Winner Hans Zimmer Set to Reimagine Saudi National Anthem

Oscar Winner Hans Zimmer set to Reimagine Saudi National Anthem

Two-time Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is to arrive in Saudi Arabia and create a reimagined version of the kingdom’s national anthem. The project is part of a larger cultural initiative by Turki Al-Sheikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority. It aims to celebrate Saudi heritage and position the kingdom as a hub for world artistic innovation.

Al-Sheikh recently posted on X, extolling Zimmer as “one of the greatest musicians of the modern age.” Along with redoing the anthem, Zimmer will discuss composing a piece called Arabia, influenced by the history and culture of Saudi Arabia. This would include all the historical characteristics of the kingdom.

Cultural Extent

That is not all Zimmer might be involved in, as plans for a massive concert for Riyadh Season are also up for discussion. The festival celebrates global cultures and hosts music performances, boxing matches and exhibitions of international crafts. Zimmer’s participation would give the festival a global profile and highlight the kingdom’s growing emphasis on cultural exchange.

Other juicy prospects include Zimmer onboarding the soon-to-be-released soundtrack of the new Saudi film The Battle of Yarmouk. This highlights Saudi Arabia’s significant commitment to developing state-of-the-art filmmaking.

A Global Visionary

Zimmer’s appreciation for cultural melting is quite in line with Saudi Arabia’s vision of putting its heritage on the world stage. The composer, who has received 12 Oscar nominations and two wins for The Lion King and Dune, has always been an advocate for diversity in art.

Speaking ahead of a Dubai Opera performance last year, Zimmer emphasised the transformative power of cultural collaboration. “Now we have a multitude of voices contributing to film from across the world – from the Middle East as well. I love that I’m in a world of dreamers,” he remarked.

As Saudi Arabia undergoes a cultural renaissance, collaborations with global icons like Hans Zimmer underscore its dedication to blending tradition with modernity.

Sweden: A Nation Embracing its Sleepy Side

Sweden: A Nation that has Embraced its Sleepy Side

In our fast-paced, digital world, sleep has become a rare luxury. Constant distractions and busy lifestyles make proper rest difficult for many people. Some countries understand this better than others; Sweden is one of them. Sweden offers a solution through “sleep tourism,” where visitors immerse themselves in nature, simplicity and peace to reset their sleep habits and find true relaxation.

Sweden’s Approach to Sleep Tourism

Unlike high-tech sleep retreats, Sweden takes a natural approach to help people sleep better. The country’s long, dark nights, cool temperatures and serene wilderness create the perfect environment for rest.

Christian Benedict, a sleep researcher at Uppsala University, explains that spending time in nature improves mental health and reduces sleeplessness. Sweden’s accessible nature and cultural focus on relaxation make sleep tourism a truly unique experience.

Nature as the Ultimate Sleep Aid

The archipelagos, forests and silent islands of Sweden entice visitors to connect with nature. One can go hiking, try their hand at kayaking, or even get a sunbath in the woods- all good activities for getting better sleep, taking care of the mind, and relieving stress. Winter arrives, bringing with it dark skies punctuated by the moonlight and snowy vistas, all perfect for sleep and soothing away city distractions.

Furthermore, performing age-old traditions, like sitting beside a fire or enjoying a sauna, contributes toward helping one sleep well. Sleeping better after a sauna and an icy plunge is not only a Scandinavian tradition but is particularly effective in relaxing muscles and releasing tension.

Darkness as an Ally for Sleep

Sweden’s dark winter months, which might seem daunting, are actually ideal for sleep tourism. Unlike the bright lights of cities, the dark skies in Sweden reduce light pollution, supporting the body’s natural Circadian rhythms.

Sweden: A Nation Embracing its Sleepy Side
Sweden: A Nation Embracing Its Sleepy Side

In Nordic culture, darkness isn’t feared but embraced. Further north, in the Arctic Circle, residents explore snowy trails even during the polar night, adapting to their environment and finding joy in the quiet.

Global Sleep Tourism Trends

While Sweden keeps things simple, other countries are exploring innovative sleep-focused retreats. London hotels offer sleep concierge services, while Thailand and India integrate mindfulness and traditional therapies into sleep programmes. In Miami, resorts use technology to promote rest.

Despite these options, Sweden’s focus on natural simplicity stands out. Its approach relies on the healing power of nature, making it accessible and calming.

Sweden’s sleep tourism is more than a holiday trend- it’s a way to rediscover the art of rest. By embracing nature, simplicity and traditional relaxation techniques, visitors can reset their sleep and leave feeling refreshed.

In a world where sleep is becoming harder to achieve, Sweden offers a much-needed reminder: sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective.

Rashid Latif Names Champions Trophy Favorites Beyond India, Pakistan

rashid-latif-sounds-the-alarm-is-pakistan-cricket-in-the-icu-rashid-latif-names-champions-trophy-favorites-beyond-india-pakistan

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is just around the corner, and fans are already buzzing about the tournament’s two clear favorites: India and Pakistan.

With the tournament set to kick off on February 19 and matches hosted in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Dubai, excitement is through the roof. But not everyone thinks it will be a two-horse race.

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif believes other teams could spring surprises. He sees England, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa as serious threats to the Asian giants.

Read More: Pakistan Stars Shine Bright in ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024

Don’t Count Out the Underdogs

While Pakistan and India are stacked with talent, Latif warned against underestimating the competition during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“India is a strong team, but I believe these four teams—England, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa—could pose a greater challenge,” Latif said.

And he’s got a point. All four teams have a history of delivering on the big stage. England’s explosive batting lineup, New Zealand’s clinical approach, Australia’s winning mindset, and South Africa’s firepower make them dangerous opponents.

Why Pakistan Has the Edge?

For Pakistan, the Champions Trophy isn’t just another tournament—it’s happening on home soil. Matches in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi will give the Men in Green a major home advantage.

Add to that the fiery crowd support and familiar conditions, and Pakistan looks primed to make a deep run. Rashid Latif echoed this sentiment, saying, “I am confident that our players will seize the opportunity to play in home conditions.”

why-icc-champions-trophy-2025-schedule-is-still-under-wraps

The tournament opener between Pakistan and New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi will set the tone. But let’s be honest—the match everyone’s waiting for is Pakistan vs. India on February 23 in Dubai. With so much history between these two, it’s bound to be an epic showdown.

India’s Strengths Are Unmatched

India, on the other hand, doesn’t need home conditions to shine. Their batting depth, lethal spin attack, and calm under pressure make them a formidable side. They’re used to the weight of expectations and thrive on it. But can they handle the pressure of a fiery Pakistan team in Dubai? That’s the million-dollar question.

The Champions Trophy isn’t just about the big names, though. Teams like Afghanistan and Bangladesh are known to punch above their weight. A spirited performance or an upset win could turn the tournament on its head.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will run from February 19 to March 9. With the world’s best teams battling it out, the tournament promises non-stop entertainment.

Can Pakistan and India justify their “favorites” tag? Or will a dark horse steal the show? The countdown has begun, and one thing is certain—it’s going to be a thrilling ride. Who do you think will lift the trophy?

The ICC has just dropped its Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024, and there’s plenty to celebrate for Pakistan cricket enthusiasts. Three of our own—Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Saim Ayub—have secured their places among the world’s finest. Let’s take a closer look at their stellar performances and why they made the cut.

Saim Ayub

If there’s one player who truly lit up 2024 for Pakistan, it’s Saim Ayub. This left-handed opener wasn’t just consistent; he was spectacular. Scoring 515 runs in just nine innings at an impressive average of 64.37, Ayub was a match-winner at the top of the order.

But wait, there’s more. The young gun showed his all-round skills by picking up five wickets at crucial moments. Who can forget his role in Pakistan’s historic whitewash of South Africa on their home turf? Named Player of the Series, Ayub proved he’s here to stay.

Shaheen Shah Afridi

Shaheen Afridi had yet another year to remember. The tall left-arm pacer was a nightmare for batters, especially with the new ball. In just six matches, he claimed 15 wickets at a jaw-dropping average of 17.60.

His pinpoint yorkers and ability to swing the ball both ways kept opponents guessing. Time and again, Afridi provided Pakistan with breakthroughs at critical junctures, cementing his place as one of the best bowlers in the world.

Haris Rauf

Haris Rauf, with his raw pace and fiery spells, was a standout performer for Pakistan in 2024. Picking up 13 wickets in eight matches, he was Pakistan’s go-to bowler during the death overs.

A Balanced Team with Global Flavors

While Pakistan made a strong mark, the ICC ODI Team of the Year featured stars from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and even the West Indies. Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka’s versatile all-rounder, was named captain after a phenomenal year. Pathum Nissanka’s double hundred and Wanindu Hasaranga’s record-breaking 7/19 were other standout moments.

Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz and 18-year-old spinner AM Ghazanfar also turned heads with their performances. And let’s not forget Sherfane Rutherford from the West Indies, whose power-hitting at an average of 106.2 earned him a spot.

ChatGPT Went Down - The Internet Freaked Out

ChatGPT, the chatbot millions rely on daily, went offline briefly on Thursday morning. Users trying to access it faced long load times and a frustrating “bad gateway” error message. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, quickly investigated the issue. By 8:43 a.m., they identified the problem, and ChatGPT was back up and running.

Why did Everyone Panic?

For many, ChatGPT is more than just a tool. It’s part of their routine. Students use it to draft essays. Freelancers rely on it to meet deadlines. Developers turn to it for coding help. When ChatGPT goes down, it disrupts productivity and sparks chaos. One social media user joked, “ChatGPT down? It’s more than just an outage. It’s a global disruption.”

UNESCO Dedicates World Education Day to Artificial Intelligence

UNESCO Dedicates World Education Day to Artificial Intelligence

24 January marks World Education Day. As we celebrate this day, UNESCO’s theme for this year, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” is crucial. It reminds us to keep human values central in a world where technology is reshaping learning.

Why AI in Education Matters

AI is everywhere now, changing how we live and learn. From innovative tools to data-driven systems, it’s reshaping education. But this progress also raises questions. How do we ensure humans stay in control? To do that, students and teachers must understand AI’s potential and limitations. They need skills to shape AI and make thoughtful decisions.

UNESCO’s Call for Responsible AI Training

UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, calls for everyone to have AI literacy. She urges, “We must ensure education enables people to navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI.” Teachers, as key drivers of change, must have the tools and training to adapt.

Egypt’s Vision for AI in Schools

Egypt is leading the way in integrating AI into education. The country’s 2030 Agenda includes bold reforms to modernise schools. Educators will receive training and students will benefit from AI-driven learning tools. These efforts aim to create a future-ready workforce.

UNESCO and Egypt: A Strong Partnership

UNESCO’s Regional Office in Cairo supports Egypt’s digital transformation. Their initiatives promote Open Educational Resources (OER) and Media Information Literacy (MIL). They also focus on digital equity, ensuring marginalised communities aren’t left behind. These programmes emphasise that AI in education must be inclusive.

Transforming Schools Through Technology

The “Technology-Enabled Open Schools for All” project, launched by UNESCO, Huawei, and Egypt’s Ministry of Education, ran from 2020 to 2023. Key outcomes included:

  • A National Distance Learning Centre for teacher training.
  • A digital content studio to create learning materials.
  • Improved digital infrastructure for schools.
  • Programmes addressing learning gaps for marginalised groups.

This initiative benefitted 950,000 K-12 teachers, demonstrating how collaboration can drive progress.

Preparing for AI’s Challenges

AI is changing higher education. It simplifies admissions, improves teaching methods, and helps with academic planning. In Egypt, AI helps prepare workers by teaching them new skills and updating their existing ones. But technology alone isn’t enough. Education must also focus on emotional intelligence and critical thinking. Students and teachers need to question what tasks AI should handle and where human skills are needed.

Lifelong Learning in a Tech-Driven World

The 2025 International Day of Education highlights the need for lifelong learning. Schools must promote AI literacy and adaptability to prepare people for rapid changes. Governments should integrate AI into policies responsibly, ensuring it supports, not replaces, human roles.

AI offers incredible opportunities for education. However, it’s up to us to guide its use ethically. This International Day of Education, let’s commit to preparing students and teachers to lead in a world of humans and machines working together.

Trump’s Warning: Produce in US or Pay Tariffs

Trump’s Warning: Produce in US or Pay Tariffs

During a video appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump firmly warned global leaders to either manufacture their products in the US or pay hefty tariffs. Speaking from the White House, the president shared his plans to cut taxes, deregulate industries, and take action against illegal immigration.
In a stern message, the President said, “Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth. But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff.” During the speech, Trump also connected the war in Ukraine to oil prices.

Donald Trump also disclosed that he would urge Saudi Arabia and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to bring down the crude prices. “If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.” He also sent a message to central banks, stating that he would “demand an immediate reduction in interest rates”—a sign that he might apply pressure on the independent US Federal Reserve.

Combatting Misconceptions: The Need for Public Education on Tobacco Harm Reduction

Sale-Of-Tobacco-Products-banned-In-Educational-Institutes
Misconceptions about smoke-free products such as vapes, oral nicotine pouches, and heated tobacco products persist.

A recent study led by University College London (UCL) highlights a growing global issue – misconceptions about the risks of vaping and other smoke-free alternatives. The study, published in JAMA Network Open and funded by Cancer Research UK, analyzed survey responses from over 28,000 smokers in England between 2014 and 2023. It found that by June 2023, 57% of smokers believed vaping was as harmful or even more harmful than smoking – a stark increase from previous years. This growing misperception is alarming, as it discourages adult smokers from transitioning to alternatives that could significantly reduce harm.

Pakistan is no exception. Misconceptions about smoke-free products such as vapes, oral nicotine pouches, and heated tobacco products persist, preventing many smokers from considering better alternatives. As Dr. Sarah Jackson from UCL noted, “The risks of vaping are much lower than the risks of smoking, and this isn’t being clearly communicated. Public education must bridge this knowledge gap to ensure smokers can make informed choices about their nicotine use.”

Countries like Japan and Sweden have successfully lowered smoking rates by promoting THR products through informed policies and public awareness efforts. A similar approach in Pakistan could empower smokers to make well-informed decisions. Awareness campaigns should focus on clarifying the difference between smoking and better alternatives, emphasizing that while no nicotine product is risk-free, smoke-free options significantly reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.

Addressing misconceptions requires clear communication from policymakers, healthcare professionals, and media outlets. Misinformation, often driven by sensationalist narratives from Anti-Tobacco Organizations (ATOs), creates unnecessary fear around THR products. A science-based dialogue, supported by regulatory frameworks that ensure quality and safety, can help build public confidence.

With a strategic focus on awareness, accessibility, and regulation, Pakistan can follow the lead of other countries that have successfully reduced smoking rates. Misconceptions should not stand in the way of progress – accurate information is vital in the journey toward a smoke-free future.
