Did Pakistan’s Selectors Drop the Ball? Jason Gillespie Thinks So!

video-of-pakistan-head-coach-jason-gillespie-goes-viral-pcb-likely-to-appoint-a-local-head-coach-for-all-formats

Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign turned into a disaster. From being defending champions to crashing out in the group stage, it was a fall no one saw coming. And now, former head coach Jason Gillespie has some strong words for the selectors.

The Australian legend has openly questioned why two young talents— Irfan Khan Niazi and Sufiyan Muqeem—were left out of the squad. Looking at Pakistan’s performances, he might just have a point.

Where is Irfan Khan Niazi?

Gillespie seems shocked that Pakistan didn’t pick Irfan Khan Niazi, and honestly, many fans feel the same.

“Irfan Khan Niazi is one of the hardest hitters and cleanest strikers of the ball in Pakistan. He is also the best fielder in the country,” said Gillespie.

If that’s true, why wasn’t he included? A team that struggled to put up competitive totals could have really used a power-hitter like Niazi. His ability to clear the ropes and his sharp fielding could have made a difference.

Sufiyan Muqeem: A Wasted Opportunity?

Pakistan’s selection decisions went from bad to worse when they picked only one specialist spinner. And leaving out Sufiyan Muqeem? That was a big blunder, according to Gillespie.

“Sufiyan Muqeem is a very talented cricketer who, if given the right opportunities, can be a great servant for Pakistan cricket,” he stated.

Jason Gillespie believes Muqeem has already proven he has the temperament and skills for international cricket. With Pakistan struggling in the middle overs, a quality left-arm spinner could have made a huge difference.

Pakistan went into the tournament with serious gaps in the squad. No big hitters to finish games. Not enough spin options. And predictably, they paid the price.

A team known for producing world-class spinners and explosive finishers somehow left out two players who fit those roles perfectly. The result? Defeats against New Zealand and India, and an early exit from the tournament.

Mohamed Salah Set for Historic Premier League Season

Mohamed Salah Set for Historic Premier League Season

Mohamed Salah is on track to break the Premier League record for most goal involvements in a season, a record set by Andy Cole in 1993-94 and later matched by Alan Shearer in 1994-95. Both players achieved 47 goal contributions in a 42-game season. Salah could surpass this mark by April if he continues at his current pace, with six matches remaining in the season.

Salah’s impact is not just about numbers but also about dominance on the field. “The numbers speak for themselves,” said Arne Slot after Liverpool’s recent win. Salah has already recorded 25 goals and 16 assists, putting him within reach of Thierry Henry’s 2002-03 record of 24 goals and 20 assists. With 11 games left, he could go beyond Henry’s record, potentially reaching 22-23 assists while also challenging Erling Haaland’s goal-scoring record of 36 in a season.

His ability to both score and assist makes this one of the greatest individual Premier League seasons. If Salah continues at his expected rate of 0.75 goals per 90 minutes, he could finish the season with 33 goals, beating his own Liverpool debut season record. He would surpass legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Henry, Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane in goal contributions. If he maintains his current assist rate, he would match with Kevin De Bruyne and Henry’s record of 20 assists.

By the end of the season, Salah could reach 55 total goal involvements, possibly having a direct hand in more goals than Manchester United as a whole. If Liverpool wins both the Premier League and Champions League, his chances for the Ballon d’Or would be undeniable.

Australia-South Africa Match Abandoned Due to Rain

Australia-South Africa Match Abandoned Due to Rain

The Champions Trophy match between Australia and South Africa at Rawalpindi was abandoned due to persistent rain. The decision was made as the rain showed no signs of stopping. With more rainfall expected, officials had no choice but to call off the game. As a result, both teams will share the points from this crucial fixture.

Skipper Steve Smith expressed his disappointment, saying, “I didn’t expect to be washed out. Not ideal, but can’t do much about it.” The washout means that all three remaining group matches will be crucial. England and Afghanistan, who face off in Lahore on Wednesday, are both on zero points. The winner will still have a chance to progress, while the loser will be eliminated from the tournament.

Conclave Gains Momentum

The critically acclaimed Conclave, which includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, traces the dramatic Vatican battle over electing a new pope. The film has just been awarded the SAG Award for Best Ensemble as well as the BAFTA top award. This makes it a likely Oscar nominee for Best Picture on March 2.

In his acceptance speech, Fiennes stressed the significance of community in both filmmaking and life. Rossellini, on her part, had a moment of expressing concern regarding the real-world issue of 88-year-old Pope Francis. Francis is currently in critical condition with double pneumonia. “We are very, very worried for our pope,” she said in an interview. “We love this pope.”

£4.8M Gold Toilet Stolen in a 5-Minute Heist at Blenheim Palace

£4.8M Gold Toilet Stolen in 5-Minute Heist at Blenheim Palace

A £4.8 million solid gold toilet was stolen in 2019 in a daring five-minute heist at Blenheim Palace, as revealed in the UK court. The toilet, titled America, was an art installation by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and was fully functional, and connected to the plumbing system. A gang of masked thieves broke into the palace using sledgehammers and fled, leaving their tools behind.

Prosecutors at Oxford Crown Court stated that the stolen toilet was likely dismantled into smaller gold pieces and since then has never been recovered. The accused suspects are: Michael Jones (39) from Oxford, who denied the burglary charge. Fred Doe (36) from Windsor and Bora Guccuk (41) from London, both pleaded not guilty to conspiring to transfer stolen property. James Sheen (40) from Northamptonshire had already admitted to burglary and money laundering in April.

However, the court was presented with a photograph allegedly taken by Jones 17 hours before the crime was committed. Which prosecutors claimed was part of the planning. Mobile phone records of Sheen, Doe, and Guccuk reportedly contained discussions about selling 20kg of stolen gold. This gold was valued at £25,632 per kilo. Guccuk, a jewellery dealer from Hatton Garden, London, allegedly made £3,000 profit per kilo from the sales.

The gold toilet weighed 98kg and had been insured for $6 million. At the time of the robbery, its raw gold value alone was around £2.8 million. Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is widely known as the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

PIA Crash Survivor Shares Story of Resilience and Hope

Source: Tribune

When a plane goes down, survival is nearly impossible. But for some who go against the odds, their experiences serve as proof of human strength. One such story is that of Zafar Masud, a banker and one of only two survivors of the devastating Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) crash in Karachi in 2020. His path from catastrophe to recovery is now documented in his book, Seat 1C: A Survivor’s Tale of Hope, Resilience, and Renewal.

PIA crash survivor shares details of 'Seat 1C' experience
Source: Tribune

Sharing His Story

At the Lahore Literary Festival, Masud discussed his choice to write the book, stressing that it was not merely a retelling of the crash but a sharing of the lessons he had learned in its wake. Though some credited his survival to the placement of his seat, Masud rejected the notion, attributing it instead to God’s will. But his is not a tale of passive fate but of active determination and thankfulness.

The book writing itself was an exercise of introspection. Masud had first been asked to write an article on his post-crash experience, and soon he understood that his insight was one to be shared more profoundly. Writing the book with Syeda Amna Hasan, he tried to provide a candid yet respectful account of what had transpired. Without sensationalising anything, his story could not but bear the weight of the enormous tragedy.

Rebuilding the Chaos

Hasan, who was instrumental in organizing the book, explained that the task of rebuilding the disorganised moments of the crash was a challenge. She collected testimony from fellow survivor Muhammad Zubair, witnesses, and rescue personnel. She also included official documents, such as cockpit voice tapes and investigation reports from the Civil Aviation Authority. This thorough research provided the book with a layered and realistic approach.

For Masud, the hardest aspect was reliving the emotional burden the crash imposed on his family and friends. His family, friends, and colleagues remained in his corner throughout the recovery process. The book is, in large part, a testament to them.

A Message of Resilience

Aside from the individual, Seat 1C provides a larger message of resilience. Masud wants his experiences to motivate others to find strength in adversity. England Eyeing Revival Of Five-Test Series Against Pakistan

Mohammad-Rizwan-pcb-media-rights-dilemma-for-pakistan-england-series-england-eyeing-revival-of-five-test-series-against-pakistan

Test cricket is often said to be dying, but England seems determined to bring it back to life. And guess what? Pakistan might be at the heart of this revival.

According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is planning to expand Test series beyond the “Big Three” (India, Australia, and England). The idea? Make Test cricket exciting again.

Why a Five-Test Series?

England believes that longer Test series create more drama, storylines, and excitement—something that two- or three-match series often fail to deliver.

A five-match series isn’t just about cricket; it’s about building narratives, rivalries, and unforgettable moments over an extended period. Think about the Ashes—one of the greatest rivalries in cricket history. Part of what makes it special is the five-match format, allowing teams to bounce back, strategize, and adapt over time.

Now, the ECB wants to extend that same excitement to teams beyond India and Australia. And Pakistan and South Africa are reportedly at the top of their list.

Pakistan vs England: A Rivalry with History

If this happens, it’ll be Pakistan’s first five-Test series in England since 1992—the famous series where Javed Miandad’s team shocked England with a 2-1 victory.

Since then, Pakistan has played multiple Test series in England, but none longer than four matches. A five-match battle would be a throwback to classic contests between these two teams.

Why Pakistan?

England knows that Pakistan brings a passionate fan base. Pakistani supporters in the UK make every match feel like a home game, bringing energy and atmosphere to stadiums.

But it’s not just about the fans. It’s about Pakistan’s rich Test history and its ability to produce thrilling cricket. A five-match series would give players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan a bigger stage to showcase their talent in the longest format.

The ECB is still considering whether to go for four or five matches, but the fact that Pakistan is even in the conversation is great news for Test cricket.

If this series happens, it could be a massive moment for both teams. Pakistan gets a shot at another historic win in England, while England gets to bring back the magic of long-form Test cricket beyond just India and Australia.

New Zealand’s Victory Knocks Pakistan Out of Champions Trophy

New Zealand’s Victory Knocks Pakistan Out of Champions Trophy

New Zealand’s successful chase of a 237-run target against Bangladesh, secured them a five-wicket win that resulted in the knockout of Pakistan from the Champions Trophy 2025. The chase started poorly, with Will Young and Kane Williamson falling early. But, Rachin Ravindra’s remarkable 112 and Tom Latham’s 55 led a crucial 129-run fourth-wicket stand, that helped them to build pressure against Bangladesh. Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell then finished the job.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Their bowlers put Bangladesh on the back foot early. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 77 off 110 balls held the innings together, but Michael Bracewell’s fielding and bowling dismantled Bangladesh. His brilliant spell of 4/26, backed by Will O’Rourke and Matt Henry, restricted Bangladesh to 236/9.

A statement from her team read, “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning. She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”

In November 2022, it was shared that Flack had been diagnosed with ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, which forced her to stop singing. She had previously suffered a stroke in 2016 and announced her retirement from performing in 2018.

The North Carolina native made history by becoming the first artist to win the Grammy for Record of the Year two years in a row. She won in 1973 for The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and in 1974 for Killing Me Softly With His Song. Her music and influence will always be remembered.

Rashid Latif Questions PCB’s Selection Process: “How Can Team Be on Merit If Chairman Isn’t?”

Pakistan’s defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has sparked yet another debate. This time, it’s not just about the team’s performance but something much deeper—the selection process itself. And former captain Rashid Latif isn’t holding back.

Speaking on a post-match analysis show, Latif slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), questioning whether the team was truly selected on merit or if personal connections played a bigger role.

Pakistan’s Selection Woes – A Longstanding Problem

Let’s be real. Pakistan cricket has always been haunted by selection controversies. Whether it’s favoritism, politics, or last-minute changes, the team’s squad often raises eyebrows.

Rashid Latif, known for his straightforward opinions, pointed this out yet again.

“This isn’t just about one bad game. We’ve been saying for a long time that this team is not selected on merit. How can a team be on merit if the chairman himself isn’t?”

That’s a strong statement. And it raises an even bigger question—is Pakistan cricket suffering because the leadership itself lacks credibility?

No Specialist Spinner, No Solid Openers – Who’s Responsible?

Rashid Latif didn’t just criticize the system. He also highlighted specific flaws in the playing XI against India.

  • No specialist spinner – In a tournament where spin is crucial, Pakistan went in without a proper spinner. A tactical blunder? Absolutely.
  • No reliable opening batsman – Pakistan’s openers have been inconsistent for years. And yet, no real solution has been found.

These aren’t just random mistakes. They point to deeper issues—poor team selection, lack of long-term planning, and a failure to adapt to modern cricket.

Leadership Issues Trickle Down to Players

Rashid Latif also spoke about how systemic flaws in leadership eventually affect the players.

“If those at the top don’t have the right cricketing knowledge, how can we expect the team to perform?”

It’s a valid argument. A strong cricket team isn’t just about talent; it’s about the right vision, leadership, and planning.

When decision-makers lack cricketing insight, teams end up making the same mistakes over and over again.

History Repeats Itself—Again and Again

This isn’t the first time Pakistan’s selection has been called into question.

  • We’ve seen talented players ignored in favor of those with stronger connections.
  • We’ve watched out-of-form players being given endless chances while deserving youngsters wait on the sidelines.
  • We’ve witnessed Pakistan struggle in major tournaments, often due to avoidable selection errors.

Latif’s comments serve as a reminder that until Pakistan cricket fixes its leadership and selection process, these problems will keep repeating.

What’s Next for Pakistan Cricket?

So, what needs to change?

  • Merit-based selection – Performance, not personal connections, should decide who makes the team.
  • Cricket-minded leadership – The PCB needs people who understand the game, not just those who hold powerful positions.
  • Long-term planning – Instead of last-minute fixes, Pakistan needs a clear strategy for the future.

Pakistan cricket has immense talent, but talent alone isn’t enough. Without the right system and leadership, the cycle of disappointment will continue.

It’s time for the PCB to wake up and listen. Or else, Pakistan fans will be having this same conversation again in 2027.
