Netflix Adolescence: An Insight into Misogyny, Incel Culture and Internet-Fueled Toxicity

I’m a huge fan of thriller shows. Every now and then, you’ll find me in front of the TV, endlessly scrolling through Netflix in search of that perfect blend of suspense, mystery and drama. It was one of these days when I came across Adolescence, directed by Phillip Barantini. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t heard about the show from the internet; it was perhaps everything social media could talk about lately. Keeping myself away from spoilers, I managed to navigate social media and finally decided to watch the show. I had an idea that it was about child abuse and murder, but nothing more than that. Little did I know that I was in for a roller-coaster of emotions.

The Frantic Beginning

Right from the bat, the show started with an enormous amount of energy. What I found weird was that there was no story build-up. The accused, aka Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), is arrested in the first few minutes of the show by detectives Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and Misha Frank (Faye Marsay), along with an entire team. The scene is probably one of the most intense of the entire series. From breaking the doors to shouting at the family members, entering Jamie’s room, arresting him and realising he has peed himself, everything happens very quickly but leaves a lasting impact.

The police then take Jamie to the police station and ask his parents, father Eddie Miller (Stephen Graham), mother Manda Miller (Christine Tremarco) and sister Lisa Miller (Amélie Pease) to follow. From the point Jamie sits in the van till he is taken to the police station, Owen Cooper’s mind-blowing acting keeps the audience gripped. He is crying, pleading and looks exhausted, and at that moment, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.

The One-Shot Brilliance

By this time, I understood the show wasn’t shot like any regular one. It felt longer than usual because the entire episodes were shot in one go. As a film student myself, I knew how difficult this could have been, which is why it instantly earned my appreciation. Now that I look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage of Adolescence, it’s truly amazing to see how the crew behind the camera has worked just as hard as the one in front.

Cinematographer Mathew Lewis filmed each episode using the DJI Ronin 4D paired with a Cooke SP3 32mm lens. This, however, was not Mathew and Phillip’s first one-shot project; the two had previously worked on Boiling Point, which was just as challenging.

Episode 3: A Mandatory Viewing

If you haven’t watched the show yet, you need to do it for episode 3, perhaps some of the most dramatic and exhilarating content I have seen on Netflix in a while. We’re all familiar with the age-old narrative of two people sitting on the opposite ends of a table, the mood confrontational, and the atmosphere almost eerie. But what made a similar scene from Adolescence absolutely unravelling?

In usual cases, the two people sitting across one another often include a serial killer or hardcore criminal and a fresh detective. But this time, on one end sat a young boy, 13-year-old Jamie Miller, accused of stabbing his classmate Katie (Emilia Holliday) and a female psychologist, Briony (Erin Doherty), on the other. This already makes the scenario a whole lot different. Their interaction that extends for more than an hour is by far the most entertaining part of the Netflix series. It is also the most important one.

What Really Happened?

What starts slow and friendly escalates in no time when Briony begins digging deeper, asking questions about his relationship with his father and what he thinks being a man means. The irritation within Jamie soon becomes apparent. From there on, we get a glimpse of what truly happened. Jamie tells Briony about Katie’s leaked nude photos and how the entire school made fun of her. Jamie, too, had seen these images but did not consider Katie to be her type because she was too “flat.” But despite Katie not being his type, Jamie asked her out, seeing that she was in a vulnerable position.

At this point, the conversation between Jamie and Briony feels like a tennis match, one that keeps getting interesting after every shot. Jamie’s constantly changing demeanor, from nonchalant to panicky and extremely aggressive at points, holds the audience together. On the contrary, Briony holds a calm demeanor, carefully paving her way through the session. It’s an absolute treat to watch Owen Cooper, a first-time actor, give perhaps one of the most brilliant performances Netflix has ever seen. You just couldn’t tell that this kid has never acted on television before.

The Emoji Code

One of the most shocking yet interesting moments of Adolescence was when Adam (Amari Bacchus), Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe’s (Ashley Walters) son, reveals the hidden meaning of the emojis under Jamie’s Instagram posts. Until then, the detective had a hard time understanding why Jamie would kill Katie; after all, he had no motive. So what exactly did these innocent-looking emojis mean?

Red Pill Emoji

You must have seen the pill left by Katie on Jamie’s profile. As innocent as it might look, this emoji signifies the concept of the “manosphere,” a term that is loosely connected to a network of websites and online forums that promote masculinity and even misogyny. The Red Pill was first seen being used in The Matrix. But why did Katie leave this emoji on Jamie’s profile? Perhaps because she believed that Jamie has bought into these toxic misogynist traits that the pill represents.

100 Emoji

While explaining to his dad, Adam elaborates on the 100 emoji that was also seen on Jamie’s profile. This emoji is quite popular among the incel groups where men believe that 80% of the women want 20% of the men. This gives birth to the idea that the majority of men are expelled from dating, and thus the hatred against women begins. Katie’s use of the emoji is a reaffirmation that Jamie already had, that he is perhaps among the undesirable men out there.

The fact that this thought is fed into young boys’ minds is simply disgusting. A lot of it comes from the lectures and motivational speeches of people like Andrew Tate, a figure prominently discussed in the Netflix show. Tate often mentions how it is important to get to the top because without it, you’re nothing but a loser, and women will not want you. This often puts the idea in young minds that their worth is only determined by how much they are desired, which is completely unfair.

Dynamite Emoji

The Dynamite emoji was yet another emoji that Katie used on Jamie’s profile. It is an extreme version of the red pill and indicates a misogynist mindset that has gone to the extreme. In the show, when Katie used the dynamite emoji with the red pill emoji, she meant that Jamie has extreme internalised hatred and toxic beliefs to the point that he can be dangerous to others.

Kidney Beans Emoji

The kidney beans have to be the most random out of all. Turns our, this emoji is often used to self identify or identify someone else of being part of the incel community.

The Heart Emojis

We also saw a bunch of random heart emojis in different colours. Each one meant something in particular.

Red Heart: Represents genuine love
Yellow Heart: Suggest cautious interest
Pink Heart: Shows interest but not in an intimate way
Purple Heart: Indicates sexual desire
Orange Heart: Symbolises reassurance

Life Moves On

For me, personally, I was expecting something mind-boggling to happen in the end. Maybe, by the end of the show, I was hoping that Jamie didn’t do it despite seeing the CCTV footage in the beginning. It has a lot to do with the fact that even though Jamie was a cold-blooded murderer, the story was so personalised that you end up feeling for him. After all, he was the product of a bigger and messier social issue.

But seeing the last episode made me realise that sometimes, we need to accept things for what they are. Unlike most shows, the last episode of Adolescence was slow but highly impactful. Jamie admits his crime in a phone call to his father, an admission that feels like a relief. The main focus of the episode, however, is Jamie’s family. As the Millers celebrate Eddie Miller’s birthday, the viewers notice an emotional rollercoaster, one that perhaps will get steady with time. The family slowly accepts that their son will spend the rest of his life away from them, and perhaps there is nothing they can do now.

Stephen Graham Steals the Show

What broke my heart the most was the helplessness of the parents- the feeling of failing their only son. By the end of the episode, we see Eddie Miller go into Jamie’s room, something he hasn’t done since Jamie’s arrest, and completely breaks down. The scene feels like a sucker punch right into your chest; you cant help but cry. Eddie apologises to Jamie’s teddy bear, and at that moment, we realise that this is the very room where Jamie learnt all the propaganda that led him to kill Katie. As sad as one might feel for Eddie, we need to remember that Jamie was serving the consequences of his actions.

Player Tracking Technology to be introduced in HBL PSL X

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the introduction of Player Tracking Technology in the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), set to begin on April 11. According to a statement issued by the PCB, this technology will capture detailed data from every ball during PSL X matches.

“The players’ movements, including fielders’ coordinates, bowler run-ups and batting stances on the field will be tracked frame-by-frame on each delivery,” the PCB stated. This means fans watching PSL 10 will be able to view all this data on their screens in real time during the games.

The key features of the Player Tracking Technology include performance analysis based on zones for fielders, integration of scoring zones for batters, analysis of catching techniques during caught dismissals, and detailed breakdowns of field placements.

It makes us wonder if Netflix even produces anything funny anymore. The platform is so flooded with options now that it can be overwhelming. In fact, not all comedy Netflix shows are created equal, either- some are cringe-worthy, others try too hard, and a few are just… meh.

Fortunately though, there are still some very good comedies out there. Yes, humour is subjective, but sometimes a script is so good that almost everyone ends up sharing a laugh or two because of it.

1- Derry Girls

In this teen sitcom, five friends: Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and James (Dylan Llewellyn) experiences adolescence and navigate their teenage years during a period of political and cultural unrest in ’90s Northern Ireland known as the Troubles. The group attend a Catholic girls’ secondary school (can’t figure out why James was in it though) and find themselves in one ridiculous situation after another under the watchful side-eye of their dry-humoured headmistress, Sister Michael (Siobhán McSweeney). The show humorously sheds light on a fiercely violent conflict between Protestant Unionists and Catholic Nationalists over geographical borders and national identity.

With the satirical humour that Gen Z relates to and a banging soundtrack that nostalgic millennials will adore, Derry Girls will get anyone laughing without trying too hard.

2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Oh yes, we are getting into the classic ones here too. No one can discuss comedy shows without mentioning Brooklyn Nine-nine. The series is criminally hilarious (pun intended).

The show follows the detectives of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct as they solve crimes, go on wacky adventures, and somehow always end up in another office-wide shenanigan. When Captain Ray Holt takes over command of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct, the men and women of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine line up to impress him, but high-performing detective Jake Peralta isn’t about to revamp his reputation for skirting the rules.

For anyone who’s up to their eyeballs in dark, gritty crime dramas, this comedy feels like a breath of fresh air. And what really sets Brooklyn Nine-Nine apart is that it’s smart. The show manages to blend clever writing, pop culture references, and rapid-fire one-liners without ever relying on lazy or offensive jokes. It’s inclusive, self-aware and somehow never controversial. Big respect to scripts that can be humorous without being disrespectful.

3. The Good Place

This show is what happens when philosophy meets comedy — and somehow, it works brilliantly.

Kristen Bell plays Eleanor, a woman who accidentally ends up in “The Good Place” (heaven, basically) after her death. Here she has to pretend to be a good person to stay there. During her life on earth, Eleanor was kind of a selfish jerk. Hence, her being in the “the Good Place” seems like a mistake. But now it is what it is.

In an attempt to stay put, Eleanor resolves to become a better person and turns to her new neighbour, Chidi for help. Chidi is a professor of ethics and moral philosophy and begins giving Eleanor “lessons” while the two attempt to keep her secret from fellow inhabitants Tahani and Jason as well as the Good Place creator, Michael and his programmed humanoid (“not a robot!”) assistant, Janet. But Eleanor and her friend soon discover that their little neighbourhood in the afterlife is full of surprises. Witty, quirky, and refreshingly introspective, The Good Place will leave you thinking long after you’ve stopped giggling.

4- I Think You Should Leave

For those whose humour involve grimacing at the most absurd situations, the Emmy-nominated “I Think You Should Leave” is the perfect fit.

Each episode of the sketch series sees mastermind Tim Robinson and an impressive roster of guest stars in various social and professional settings. Usually, someone does something embarrassing and then, instead of owning the mistake, they spend the remainder of the segment attempting to gaslight everyone around them and make everything even more unhinged.

The results are something you can’t look away from — and can’t stop laughing at. Who knew gaslighting can be funny too!

5- Sex Education

The name often gives an opposite impression. However, unlike the name, the show is cleverly filled with modern society’s jokes and life lessons.

As the son of sex therapist Jean Milburn, Otis Milburn finds himself uniquely equipped to help his fellow students at Moordale Secondary with their intimacy problems. He and his classmate Maeve set up a sex therapy clinic at school to do just that and not surprisingly they quickly find success. But things get complicated when Otis can’t help but develop feelings for his business partner.

From Asa Butterfield’s brilliantly awkward portrayal of Otis to Gillian Anderson’s impeccable comedic timing as his mother, Dr. Jean Milburn, there’s so much to love about Sex Education. The show wasn’t just funny; it also challenged social stigmas around sex, gender, and relationships; proving to be a turning point in helping normalise conversations that a lot of young people struggle to have.

Whether you love clever writing, absurd sketches, or character-driven chaos, there’s something on this list to make you laugh (and maybe cry, but in a good way).

According to sources, US companies are seeking to invest in Pakistan’s largely untapped mineral sector. “This could help boost one of the world’s largest copper and gold deposits,” the Pakistani government said Wednesday.

According to a government statement, Eric Meyer, Senior Bureau Official for the State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, expressed this interest to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a meeting in Islamabad. Meyer attended the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum. This was an international summit designed to attract foreign investment in the country’s mining sector.

According to the statement, Meyer “acknowledged the potential of Pakistan’s mineral sector” and that American businesses are interested in investigating investment opportunities. He reaffirmed Washington’s interest in expanding bilateral cooperation, including in such sectors as trade, investment, and counterterrorism, the statement said. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s minerals sector offered “immense opportunities” and has encouraged U.S. companies to take advantage of the investment potential.

Sharif also said that Islamabad wanted to get closer to the Trump administration. Meyer’s visit marks the first by a Trump administration official since the US imposed a 29 percent tariff on Pakistani exports as part of his trade war. Sharif’s office said in a statement later Wednesday that the Pakistani prime minister will dispatch a high-level delegation to Washington to negotiate with Trump administration officials over the tariffs issue and to discuss how to enhance bilateral trade. Hoping that the investment potential can lure the international government and finally ease the tariffs a little bit.

Traffic Plan Announced for PSL 10 Matches in Karachi

The traffic police in Karachi have issued a complete plan for managing traffic during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 matches. The traffic plan announced outlines the open routes, parking arrangements, and restrictions to ensure smooth movement during the tournament.

According to the plan, Sir Sulaiman Shah Road will remain open from both directions. Fans can park their vehicles at three spots: National Coaching Centre, China Ground and National Stadium. VIP pass holders will be allowed to park inside the National Stadium.

Special traffic routes have been decided based on where fans are coming from. Fans coming from Karsaz can use Habib Ibrahim RA Road and the Stadium Flyover to reach the parking areas. Those arriving from Millennium can take Stadium Road to reach the parking sites. Fans coming from New Town can also use Stadium Road to access both parking spots.

To make sure traffic moves smoothly, restrictions have been placed on heavy and commercial vehicles in certain areas. These include Sohrab Goth to NIPA, Liaquatabad to Hassan Square, Peoples Secretariat to University Road, and Karsaz to Stadium.

Broadcast And Streaming Details For PSL 10

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared the broadcast details for PSL 10, which will start on April 11. According to the PCB, the matches will be shown live on A Sports and PTV Sports in Pakistan.

“The Urdu and English feed will be divided between A Sports and PTV Sports. On the days A Sports broadcasts the matches in English, PTV Sports will broadcast them in Urdu, and vice versa,” the statement said.

Fans in Pakistan will also be able to watch the PSL 10 matches online through platforms like Tapmad, Tamasha, Daraz, Myco and Begin.

The 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League will start on April 11, with defending champions Islamabad United playing against two-time winners Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Karachi Kings will begin their tournament on April 12. They will play their first match at their home ground, the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, against the Multan Sultans.

NADRA Suspends Nationality of Viral 'Chaiwala' Arshad Khan

Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court has issued notices to the federal government and other respondents after viral ‘chaiwala’ Arshad Khan, challenged the blocking of his computerised national identity card (CNIC) and passport. Arshad Khan, who became famous in 2016 when a photo of him pouring tea went viral on Instagram, claims that his identity documents were unlawfully blocked by NADRA and the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports.

Represented by Barrister Umer Ijaz Gilani, Arshad Khan approached the court under Article 199 of the Constitution. His petition argues that the actions taken by NADRA and the immigration authorities were unconstitutional and illegal. Mr. Gilani stated that Arshad Khan represents the ideal Pakistani dream, rising from modest beginnings to global fame after his candid photograph as a tea seller went viral. He further claimed that despite his international recognition, the actions of NADRA and other authorities were harming Khan’s career and reputation.

Violation of Basic Rights

Gilani also argued that the requirement by NADRA for pre-1978 proof of residency was unjustified, with no legal basis. He emphasised that Mr. Khan’s family had documented citizenship history. Referring to Articles 4, 9, 14 and 18 of the Constitution, the lawyer highlighted that Khan’s rights to livelihood, dignity, and lawful treatment were violated.

Government Officials Defend the Action

The court was informed of precedents from the Sindh High Court, Islamabad High Court, and previous judgments of the Lahore High Court, which had declared the blocking of CNICs and passports without due process to be illegal. In response, the assistant attorney general and NADRA’s law officer questioned the maintainability of the petition, arguing that Khan had failed to provide enough documentation proving his Pakistani nationality.

Justice Hassan issued notices to the respondents, requesting para-wise comments and ordering senior officials from NADRA and the Directorate of Immigration and Passports to present relevant records to explain their actions. The court also barred the authorities from taking any adverse actions against Khan.

In a related matter, Justice Hassan restrained the authorities from taking any coercive action against another petitioner seeking recognition of Pakistani citizenship by birth. The petitioner, born in Pakistan to Afghan refugee parents, had presented a birth certificate issued by the Government of Pakistan. The court directed NADRA to make a decision on his citizenship claim within a month and prohibited any government agency from taking action against him until the matter was resolved.

“Trump’s tariffs” have taken the world by storm. Now, every day, we hear a new tariff policy being thrown at us, which is followed by a ruckus worldwide. But what even are tariffs? How do tariffs work, and why are they affecting the global economy to such a great extent?

What are Tariffs?

At their core, tariffs are taxes imposed by a government on goods imported from another country. Think of them as a surcharge that foreign products must pay to enter a domestic market. Unlike income tax, tariffs vary based on the product and the country of origin. It is stated that the goal of tariffs is to raise funds for the government and help in the distribution of money. But honestly, it is mostly used as a weapon against foreign exporting firms.

The intention behind a tariff is typically to make imported goods more expensive, thereby giving locally produced goods a price advantage.

There are two main types of tariffs:

Specific Tariffs: a fixed fee per unit (e.g., $10 per ton of steel).
Ad Valorem Tariffs: a percentage of the value of the imported good (e.g., 25% of the value of a car).

Governmental bodies implement tariffs for their own political benefits, but who pays the cost of it? The consumers, which means the locals. Think of it like this: when you go to the store to buy a new shirt, the price of that shirt has increased. Then the rest of the impact is borne by those in the middle—the retailers and firms—that are purchasing those goods from foreign countries and taking them all the way to the stores to you.

The Economic Chain Reaction

When a country imposes tariffs, it sets off a domino effect. Imported goods become more expensive, which might seem like a win for domestic producers who now face less foreign competition. However, the benefits are rarely black and white.

PSL Lacks Usual Buzz as Fan Interest Drops

The 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League is set to start on Friday, April 11, in Rawalpindi, but PSL lacks the usual buzz that typically surrounds such an event. The opening match will feature defending champions Islamabad United against Lahore Qalandars at 8:30 pm PST at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

This season includes 34 matches from April 11 to May 18. Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host 13 matches, including the two Eliminators and the final. Rawalpindi will host 11 matches, while Karachi and Multan will each host five.

Despite this being a big milestone for PSL, fan interest is notably low this time, mostly due to Pakistan’s poor performance in international cricket over the past one-and-a-half years. Junaid Ikram, a marketing associate from Karachi, said, “I have given up on Pakistan Cricket and am in no mood to spend even five rupees for the PSL matches which are commencing here (in Karachi) next week.”

He added, “What is there to watch, you tell me. The recent disaster in New Zealand was, perhaps, the last straw. Can you imagine any team losing seven out of eight matches? We are worse than Zimbabwe, even Fiji Island.” Even the return of Saim Ayub didn’t impress him. “Saim is a terrific player, but even his presence will not be compelling enough for me to visit the National Stadium in Karachi.”

An Ongoing Disappointment

Shamim Nazish, a lecturer from Karachi, said, “The PSL is a farce and an attempt by the PCB to hoodwink the general public into believing that Pakistan Cricket is alive and kicking.” She added, “I have always supported Pakistan Cricket with all my enthusiasm… But enough is enough; I will not watch a single game now.”

Dr. Zaid Iqbal from Multan, once a big supporter of Multan Sultans, said, “I was so excited to see Multan Sultans beat all the other competitors… but not this time.” Speaking about the team captain, he said, “If the man (Rizwan) can’t get Pakistan to win, even in a home tournament like the Champions Trophy, his achievements in the matter zilch to me, really.”

In Lahore, Waheed Mirza and his sister Shireen are also planning to skip PSL 10. “We are not even inquiring about the PSL ticket rates, and the general response here in Lahore is very poor,” said Waheed.

His sister Shireen added, “All the teams in the world including Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and the West Indies have beaten our team in international matches, so what can motivate us to watch these poorly competitive PSL games?” She said, “My time and money is way too precious to be spent on PSL games.”

PIA's First Annual Profit In 21 Years Confirmed

PIA’s first annual profit in 21 years has marked a significant turnaround for the airline, which has long struggled with financial losses. According to Bloomberg, the airline recorded earnings per share of Rs5.01 for the year ending December 2024, based on its audited financial statements.

The PIA board of directors approved the financial report on Tuesday. The report showed that the airline earned Rs204.16 billion in revenue during 2024 and incurred Rs175 billion in expenses, which included fuel costs, aircraft leasing and employee salaries. As a result, PIA achieved an operational profit of Rs 9.357 billion and a net profit of Rs 26.2 billion, a major recovery compared to its Rs 104 billion loss in 2023 despite generating Rs 237 billion in revenue that year.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in a post on social media, confirmed the board’s approval and said, “For the first time in 21 years, PIA achieved a net profit.” He mentioned an operational profit of Rs 9.3 billion and a net profit of Rs 26.2 billion for 2024. According to him, PIA’s operating margin exceeded 12%, which is comparable to some of the world’s top airlines.

Khawaja Asif said that PIA’s return to profitability is a result of the government’s full support and key reforms. These included cutting down the workforce, managing expenses, stabilising profitable routes, closing down loss-making routes and restructuring the airline’s balance sheet. He said that PIA’s first annual profit not only improves its image but will also benefit Pakistan’s economy.

In recent years, PIA has faced serious challenges, such as grounded aircraft, flight cancellations, and dependency on government bailouts. The government’s previous attempt to sell the airline failed due to a low bid under the $306 million minimum price.

Now, the government plans to restart the privatisation process, with new bids expected soon. To make the offer more attractive, around 75% of the airline’s debt has been removed. Usman Bajwa, secretary at Pakistan’s privatisation commission, stated in February that the debt removal has sparked fresh interest among potential buyers.
