Pak vs New Zealand: NZ Takes 3-1 Series Lead

Pak vs New Zealand: NZ Takes 3-1 Series Lead

New Zealand dealt a crushing blow to Pakistan’s aspirations of levelling their T20 series, defeating them by 115 runs in the fourth game at Mount Maunganui. The Black Caps’ dominant performance in Pak vs New Zealand gave them an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. However, there is one match remaining to be played.

New Zealand’s batting was on fire, spearheaded by Finn Allen’s 50 from 20 balls and Tim Seifert’s 44 off 22 balls. Their 59-run partnership in the opening stand put the innings on the right trajectory. Captain Michael Bracewell signed off in style, clubbing 46 not out off 26 balls to steer his side towards a strong 220-6.

Pakistan’s Batting Collapse

Pakistan’s pace attack could not hold back the hosts, though Haris Rauf did better with 3-27. The target the Kiwis left was impossible right from the beginning.

Pakistan’s collapse with the bat was nothing less than catastrophic in the Pak vs New Zealand match. The visitors were reduced to 9-3 within two overs, Jacob Duffy destroying by taking two wickets in the first over. Zak Foulkes then joined the wreckage by taking three wickets for 25 runs, reducing Pakistan to tatters at 56-8.

The lone two Pakistani batsmen who demonstrated any sort of resilience were Abdul Samad and Irfan Khan. Samad’s heroic unbeaten 44 prevented Pakistan from registering their lowest-ever T20 score. Irfan Khan scored 24, but the rest of the batting order collapsed, being unable to read the movement and turn coaxed by New Zealand bowlers.

Record-Breaking Defeat

Pakistan’s 105 all-out in the 17th over recorded their largest T20 loss by runs against any country, beating a 95-run defeat against New Zealand in Wellington nine years ago.

New Zealand’s triumph was thanks mostly to their accurate seam attack, which flourished under the floodlights. Even leg-spinner Ish Sodhi was able to turn the ball sharply, adding to Pakistan’s difficulty in the chase.

Talking after the match, Pakistan captain Ali Agha conceded the team had been comprehensively outplayed. “We have to give them credit, they bowled very well and they outplayed us. It was swinging and turning too. It did a lot in the second innings but we are an international team and we have to do better.”

With the last match approaching in Wellington, Pakistan is in for a tough fight to regain some dignity in a series that has already gone out of their hands.

South Korea’s Constitutional Court Reinstates Prime Minister Han

South Korea’s Constitutional Court Reinstates Prime Minister Han

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, allowing him to resume his role as acting president. This ruling adds another twist to the political turmoil caused by the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

In a 7-1 (a judicial ruling where seven judges voted in favour of one side, while one judge voted against it, resulting in a 7-1 majority decision) decision on Monday, the court dismissed Han’s impeachment. Five justices ruled that there was not enough evidence to justify his removal. Two others argued that the impeachment lacked legitimacy, as only 192 out of 300 lawmakers supported it—short of the required two-thirds majority.

Han became acting president after Yoon’s impeachment in mid-December. However, he was soon suspended for refusing to appoint three new justices to the Constitutional Court. But now with this ruling, he is now back in office.

After the verdict, Prime Minister Han thanked the court and vowed to focus on South Korea’s geopolitical challenges. He called for national unity, stating, “There is no place for division now. Our country’s priority is to move forward.”

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court is still reviewing Yoon’s impeachment. A decision is expected soon, determining whether he will remain removed from office or be reinstated. If the court upholds his impeachment, a presidential election must take place within 60 days.

Yoon also faces criminal charges, including insurrection, linked to his brief imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence or even the death penalty.

As South Korea navigates this crisis, the political landscape of the country remains uncertain. The final decision on Yoon’s future will shape the country’s leadership and political stability in the coming months.

Speaking at the inauguration of development work near Macchi Miani Market, Murtaza Wahab stressed the need to improve Karachi’s Old City area. He called it the foundation of the metropolis and promised to address its problems. Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, PPP leader Javed Nagori, and other officials also attended the event.

Pakistan Day: How 23rd March Changed History

Pakistan Day: How 23rd March Changed History

March 23rd is celebrated across the nation as “Pakistan Day.” However, many people don’t know that it is more than just a “holiday” and has a very major historical context behind it. In fact, many are even divided on the day’s origin. So, let’s revisit the history and see what this day signifies.

Origin of Pakistan Day: The Lahore Resolution

To understand the significance and the origin of Pakistan Day (Pakistan Resolution Day to be more precise), we must first revisit the Lahore Resolution. The Lahore Resolution was initially drafted on March 23rd 1940 but was later publicised as the Pakistan Resolution.

The 27th annual session of the All India Muslim League was held in Lahore from 22nd March 1940 to 24th March 1940. In this session, the Lahore resolution was tabled and passed the following day, on March 24, 1940. It was in this resolution that the Muslim League officially demanded a separate independent homeland. Pakistan’s name was proposed this day and its idea was officially declared to the cabinet. Moreover, Muhammad Ali Jinnah showed to the whole world that he was the sole representative of the Muslims of the Subcontinent.

The “Lahore Resolution” was presented by the A.K. Fazal Ul Haque. The resolution stated that No constitutional plan would be workable in this country or acceptable to Muslims unless it is designed on the following basic principles, namely, that geographically contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted … that the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in the majority, as in the northwestern and eastern zones of India, should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign”.

Basically, Muslims finally agreed to the Two Nation Theory, that Hindus and Muslims are two separate people and that they cannot live in a single nation.

Earlier, the poet-philosopher, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, in his address to the Muslim League at Allahabad in 1930, had envisioned a separate homeland for the Muslims. Since then, the idea has touched millions of Muslims.

How Pakistan Day Became Republic Day

Many remember this day as “Republic Day” too but why? Well, once our country came into existence, this day was celebrated as Pakistan Day. This was because, even after Pakistan came into being, in the start, it wasn’t entirely independent. At least not until it had its own constitution. During this period, Pakistan had the status of a “dominion” — one of the self-governing territories of the British Commonwealth. Basically, we were still under our colonisers in a subtle manner.

To explain this further, if the Pakistani government had to make an important appointment or decision, it would require an approval from the Queen of the United Kingdom. Even in the most important decisions our cabinet would send the nominations for the Queen’s approval. It was then in 1956 on March 23, that Pakistan promulgated its first Constitution and formally became a “Republic” — severing the formal link with Britain.

As is the norm in the developed world, the day was celebrated as Republic Day to mark the promulgation of Pakistan’s first Constitution.

The Republic Day Parade

In honour of this auspicious day, the Republic Day Parade is held annually on March 23rd. It is a grand military and cultural event that is organized in Islamabad.

The parade features the Pakistan Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy and Air Force, showcasing their strength through march-pasts, aerial displays and advanced military equipment. It also includes performances highlighting Pakistan’s diverse culture, with floats representing various provinces. Foreign dignitaries and high-ranking officials often attend, and the President of Pakistan delivers a special address. This event symbolises national unity, patriotism, and the country’s defence capabilities.

After the parade, the President confers national awards and medals on the awardees at the Presidency. Wreaths are also laid at the mausoleums of Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah founder of Pakistan.

Republic Day Parade
Republic Day Parade

Strategic Use of Pakistan Day

However, March 23 was celebrated as Pakistan Day until 1958. Later, on October 7, 1958, President Iskandar Mirza revoked the Constitution and appointed General Ayub Khan as the Chief Martial Law Administrator. So, now in the absence of a Constitution, it would be pretty incongruous to celebrate a day which marked the promulgation of the said Constitution.

Hence, to save their face the authorities changed the name and kept celebrating it on the same date. Basically, they twisted a very important chapter of our country’s history. They mixed it in such a way that now people don’t know the truth of this day’s origin at all.

People are Lost About Pakistan Day

A major question here arises as to what exactly prevented the elected governments from restoring the Republic Day? Once martial law was lifted, it could have been celebrated easily. Even in educational institutions the significance of the day is not taught in its complete form, or perhaps we find it too convenient to forget.

The Final Message For Pakistan Day

Even though, the people in charge don’t pay much attention to this day we as a nation must reflect upon its significance. We must understand that this day allowed us the gift of Pakistan. It allowed us the privilege of a separate homeland while many countries in the world face great turmoil, some of them even civil wars and disintegration. Our ancestors fought for this day for our sake and the least we can do is remember their efforts and hence remember this day.

This Pakistan Day, we must try to getvthe new generation aware about the struggles of the Muslims. We must reignite the spirit of the historic Lahore Resolution of 1940. We can do this by rejuvenating enthusiasm and spirit among our countrymen!

Strengthening Bilateral Tries

PM Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Jeddah on Wednesday for a four-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, with a primary focus on strengthening economic ties and enhancing bilateral trade relations between Pakistan and the kingdom. Upon his arrival, he was warmly received by Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, the deputy governor of Makkah. His visit includes meetings with key Saudi officials and business leaders to explore opportunities for investment and cooperation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has postponed his scheduled visit to Saudi Arabia due to health concerns. Sources within the party confirmed that doctors advised Nawaz Sharif to avoid air travel due to his ongoing medical condition. His personal physician, Dr. Adnan, has been closely monitoring his health and conducting daily medical check-ups.

Nawaz Sharif, who was expected to join PM Shehbaz Sharif for Umrah and hold meetings in Saudi Arabia, had to cancel his trip on medical grounds. His absence from the visit has raised concerns among party supporters, who were hoping for his participation in political discussions with Saudi leadership.

PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia is seen as crucial for fostering closer ties between the two nations, particularly in trade and investment sectors. The prime minister is expected to hold several high-level meetings before concluding his visit.

Mustafa Amir Murder Case: Armaghan Denies Confession

Mustafa Amir Murder Case: Armaghan Denies Confession
Mustafa Amir Murder Case: Armaghan Denies Confession

Armaghan Qureshi, the prime suspect in the Mustafa Amir murder case, has denied confessing to the crime, telling a court that police are attempting to force a statement from him.

Armaghan was produced before a magistrate by Karachi police on Saturday. In court, he refused to admit guilt and claimed authorities were pressuring him into making a confession.

“The police are trying to make me give a statement under duress,” he told the court. Earlier, co-accused Shiraz aka Shavez Bukhari also refused to confess during his own appearance before the magistrate.

The two suspects are under investigation in connection with the killing of Mustafa Amir, a case that has drawn public and media attention in recent weeks. Police have not yet commented on the allegations of coercion, and the case remains under judicial scrutiny as investigators continue to collect evidence.

The court has yet to determine whether any confessional statements provided earlier are admissible under the current claims.

Last week, police submitted a charge sheet in the court of the Judicial Magistrate (South) regarding a case against accused Armaghan for threatening a lawyer, representing plaintiff in cases filed against him.

According to the charge sheet submitted by the police, Armaghan has confessed to his crime. The report states that Advocate Saif Jatoi was representing the plaintiff in cases registered against Armaghan at Gizri and Darakhshan police stations.

Must Read: Media Report in Mustafa Amir Murder Case Denied

Armaghan had abused the lawyer and his family on WhatsApp in April 2024. He also threatened them using the army to pick them from their home.

A case was registered against the accused at Boat Basin police station. Challan was submitted for the non-arrest of the accused. On February 17, police obtained permission from ATC Clifton to interrogate Armaghan. During the jail interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime.

Details of Mustafa Amir murder case

According to the details of the case, Armaghan ran a call center at a bungalow in Defence’s Khayaban-e-Momin area, where 30 to 40 boys and girls worked, along with 30 to 35 security guards stationed at the premises. The bungalow also illegally housed three lion cubs.

The interrogation report also shed light on Armaghan’s involvement in business and drug use. Prior to Mustafa’s murder, Armaghan, along with his friend Shiraz, planned to burn Mustafa’s car, and had previously intended to harm him.

The report revealed that in 2019, Armaghan was involved in a case regarding drug importation, but he had secured bail in that matter.

According to the investigation, Armaghan himself was a drug user. On New Year’s Eve, Armaghan hosted a party at the bungalow, where Shiraz was also present until 3 am. However, Mustafa did not attend the party.

The following day, Armaghan and Mustafa had a personal dispute, which escalated into a violent confrontation. On January 6, Armaghan invited Shiraz to the bungalow to consume drugs together, and Mustafa arrived at around 9 pm. During this encounter, Armaghan assaulted Mustafa with an iron rod.

Armaghan and Shiraz stripped Mustafa of his clothes, bound his hands and feet with a white sheet, and dragged him down the stairs.

Mustafa’s car was parked in the bungalow’s parking lot, and they placed his body in the trunk of the car, after which they took him to Hub.

The report further details that Armaghan instructed two employees to clean blood stains from the room. Armaghan also took Mustafa’s clothes, mobile phone, and internet device. When they could not find fuel in the car, Armaghan took a fuel can from the bungalow. The report explains that Armaghan discarded Mustafa’s mobile phone and other belongings on the way.

They arrived in Hub around 4:30 am, poured petrol on the car, and set it on fire. Armaghan and Shiraz then walked to a hotel for breakfast. A hotel employee noticed a weapon, and the two men fled the scene. After walking for several hours and hitching rides, they made their way back to Karachi.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will oversee compliance with licensing requirements and fee payments by the company.

Shaza Fatima emphasised that under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, Pakistan is making significant progress in digital transformation. She further stated that introducing modern solutions like satellite internet will enhance connectivity, especially in remote and underserved areas.

According to well-placed sources, this temporary registration will help Elon Musk’s company secure a formal licence from PTA. Clearance from the Pakistan Spectrum Allocation and Review Board (PSARB) is a key requirement for satellite-based internet providers before they can operate in the country. The sources added that the regulatory body had already finalised important technical aspects, including frequency allocation, power settings, and earth gateway stations.

The sources also revealed that PTA is expected to issue Starlink’s official licence within four weeks. After obtaining the licence, the company may require up to one year to start its services in Pakistan.

To ensure high-speed internet, Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites will operate at an altitude of 250 to 500 kilometres. These satellites are designed to offer faster and more stable connectivity compared to traditional broadband networks.

The government has also hired an international consultant to help finalise regulations for satellite-based internet providers. This step aims to ensure smooth operations while maintaining compliance with Pakistan’s telecommunications laws.

This decision is considered a major milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to improve its digital infrastructure. Starlink’s entry is expected to provide better internet access, improve communication networks, and support digital transformation, particularly in regions with limited broadband services.

Experts believe this will create new opportunities for economic growth.

Wedding Colour Bomb Malfunctions, Leaves Bride Injured

Wedding Colour Bomb Malfunction Leaves Bride Injured

An Indian-origin couple, Vicky and Pia, faced a frightening accident during their wedding photoshoot in India when a wedding colour bomb malfunctioned. The couple, who travelled from Canada for their wedding, had planned a colourful shoot using a colour bomb. However, upon its malfunction, it hit the bride directly and caused burns to her back and hair.

The accident took place between their wedding ceremony and reception. A viral video, shared by the couple on Instagram, captured the moment of the explosion. In the footage, the groom is seen lifting the bride when the colour bomb suddenly misfires, striking her instead of creating the intended visual effect.

The couple explained the incident in their Instagram caption: “Our plan was to create a beautiful backdrop with vibrant colour explosions. But the device malfunctioned and exploded directly on us. We were even planning to include our baby in the photo.”

The bride was taken to a nearby hospital, where she received treatment for her burns. Despite the unfortunate event, she managed to attend the wedding reception after medical care.

The Instagram post has gained over 22 million views, attracting support and concern from social media users. Many expressed sympathy for the bride, while others criticised the use of such explosive devices in wedding celebrations.

The couple also used their platform to spread awareness, stating, “This post is to raise awareness about the dangers of using colour bombs and similar explosive devices. We followed all safety protocols, yet something went wrong. Whether or not you believe in the evil eye, we certainly do now!”

Online reactions varied after the wedding colour bomb malfunction. Some users sent prayers for the bride’s recovery, while others warned about safety risks.

Water Crisis in Hyderabad Reaches Critical Level

Hyderabad's Water Crisis Reaches Critical Level
Hyderabad's Water Crisis Reaches Critical Level

The water crisis in Hyderabad has worsened, disrupting daily life in several neighbourhoods, including Hyderabad, Shahi Bazaar, Khai Road, Afandi Town, Tando Mir Mahmood, Unit No. 12 and Kohsar. Some areas have gone without a steady supply for four days, forcing residents to rely on costly alternatives and unsafe sources.

Many people are buying water from private suppliers at high prices. Others are using underground boreholes, raising health concerns. They are supplying contaminated water through pipelines, with reports of muddy and foul-smelling water making it unsafe for consumption. A resident of Qasimabad, Ashiq, said that after waiting four days, his area finally received water, but it was full of debris and mud.

The situation is dire from Khuda Hafiz Chowk to Kohsar, where the supply has been almost entirely cut off. For months, residents of Khuda Hafiz Chowk have depended on water from the WASA pumping station. Recently, the agency stopped them from collecting water, and the local filtration plant has shut down due to shortages.

Residents blame corruption for the crisis. Some WASA officials, citing unpaid salaries, are allegedly providing illegal water connections. These illegal connections, made by spudding pipes into the main supply line, put extra strain on an already struggling system. In Kohsar, residents are left with no choice but to buy expensive tanker water.

To protest the shortage, people from Kohsar and Unit No. 12 have organised a demonstration at Khuda Hafiz Chowk. They are demanding immediate restoration of the supply and action against illegal connections. WASA claims it is addressing the issue, but citizens allege some officials continue to facilitate illegal connections at night.

PM Shehbaz Visits Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH), Prays for Pakistan

PM Shehbaz Visits Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH), Prays for Pakistan

PM Shehbaz is on a four-day visit to Saudi Arabia, where he visited Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH) on Thursday and offered prayers for Pakistan’s development and unity among Muslims.

As part of his visit, he and his high-level delegation were given special access to Riaz-ul-Jannah. Accompanied by his delegation, he performed Nawafil prayers at Masjid-e-Nabawi and prayed for Pakistan’s prosperity and the well-being of Muslims around the world.

This visit is considered an important step in strengthening ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, as well as highlighting the PM Shehbaz’s commitment to regional peace and economic progress.

A Focus on Trade and Economic Progress

Earlier, he arrived in Jeddah on Wednesday, where he was warmly received by Prince Saud bin Mishaal, the deputy governor of Makkah. His visit is mainly focused on enhancing trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

During his stay, he is scheduled to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss ways to expand bilateral trade, investment and economic collaboration. The discussions will include exploring new partnerships in key sectors that can benefit both nations.

The visit comes after both countries signed 34 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth $2.8 billion last October, aimed at boosting private sector cooperation. Reviewing the progress of these agreements is one of the main agendas of the Prime Minister’s meetings.

Apart from economic discussions, PM Shehbaz and Saudi leaders will also talk about important regional matters. The discussions will cover the situation in Gaza, the broader Middle Eastern political landscape and challenges faced by the Muslim world.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 provides new opportunities for Pakistani businesses, as the growing consumer demand in the kingdom opens doors for economic cooperation. The Pakistani diaspora in Saudi Arabia, which consists of around 2.7 million people, plays a crucial role in sending remittances back home and contributing to Pakistan’s economy.

PM Shehbaz delegation includes key officials, such as Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. They will engage in discussions with Saudi authorities to explore further investment opportunities for Pakistan.

This visit is expected to enhance economic ties, promote investment and strengthen the historical bond between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Pakistani Journalist Farhan Mallick Arrested by Federal Investigation Agency

Source: Arab News

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) detained Pakistani journalist Farhan Mallick, the CEO and founder of Raftar, on Thursday. His son posted the news on social media site X, stating that FIA officials raided Mallick’s office on Wednesday evening. They harassed him and his staff without giving any reason for their presence.

When Mallick showed up at the FIA office on Thursday, he spent hours waiting without any explanation. At 6 PM, officials arrested him without giving any  reason. This arrest has raised concerns about Pakistan’s handling of independent journalists.

Why Was Mallick Arrested?

The FIA had been probing Pakistani Journalist Farhan Mallick for three months, according to local media. Shahzad Haider, Additional Director of the FIA’s Cyber Crime Reporting Center, blamed Mallick for operating “several programmes against the security establishment.” The arrest allegedly followed the end of that investigation.

Raftar, Mallick’s web-based news portal with more than 749,000 YouTube subscribers, covers social issues and criticizes government and military policies. Its aggressive reporting style has won it a huge following but also unwanted attention.

Outrage Over Press Freedom

Raftar was critical of Mallick’s arrest. The platform issued a statement terming the act as outright intimidation of independent journalism. It called for an immediate explanation and safety for media workers against unfair harassment.

Unfortunately, Mallick’s case isn’t an isolated incident. Pakistan has faced repeated criticism for its treatment of journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recently ranked Pakistan as the 12th-worst country for press freedom in South Asia. Since 1992, 103 journalists and media workers have been killed in the country.

A Troubling Pattern

Pakistan’s government has enacted laws purportedly to protect data and privacy. However, most think that these laws are primarily used to muzzle opposition and silence journalists.

Farhan Mallick’s arrest is just the latest addition to the long list of journalists being harassed and censored. The world will be watching to see how Pakistan treats this case and if the authorities will finally do something about such persistent problems.
