Water and Climate: Rising Risks for Urban Populations

Water and Climate: Rising Risks for Urban Populations
Water and Climate: Rising Risks for Urban Populations

Pakistan’s cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, face worsening climate threats, warns a new WaterAid report, conducted in collaboration with the University of Bristol and Cardiff. The study finds climate-induced floods and water shortages are crippling urban water and sanitation systems. Water and climate rising risks for urban populations.

Titled ‘Water and Climate: Rising Risks for Urban Populations’, the report highlights how 90% of climate disasters are water-related, with South Asian cities witnessing intensified monsoon patterns. Pakistan’s urban infrastructure is struggling to cope.

Worsening WASH Crisis

The report reveals 20% of global cities are shifting to extreme wet or dry conditions, with Pakistan’s urban hubs among them. Increased flooding is damaging sanitation facilities, spreading disease, and disrupting services. Experts warn a ‘Day Zero’ scenario is looming, where water supplies dangerously decline.

Urgent Action Needed

WaterAid urges policymakers to:

  • Invest in climate-resilient WASH systems through public-private partnerships.
  • Integrate WASH into climate adaptation plans for urban centres.
  • Prioritise vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls.

Mian Muhammad Junaid, Country Director, WaterAid Pakistan, said:

“Pakistan’s cities already struggle with water and sanitation. Climate change is accelerating the crisis, leaving millions at risk. Urgent investments in climate-resilient water systems are critical to safeguard vulnerable communities, ensure health, and build a sustainable future for all.”

A Call to Action

Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad—Pakistan’s key urban centres—are especially vulnerable due to aging infrastructure and weak climate adaptation. WaterAid is working with national and provincial governments on rainwater harvesting, flood-resistant sanitation, and improved wastewater management.

As World Water Day approaches, the urgency for climate-resilient WASH solutions has never been greater. Addressing these issues now will not only protect millions but also secure Pakistan’s water future for generations to come.

Syngenta is a globally-leading ‘plant-science’ company, committed to promoting sustainable agriculture through innovation, research and technology, while it also has a long-term vision for environmental sustainability. Hence, Syngenta Pakistan has recently installed a Solar Energy System Plant at its factory, to produce over 300KW of solar energy.

To reaffirm the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices and reduce the GHG emissions, Syngenta, Pakistan has embarked on a mission to convert their manufacturing facility in Karachi and their warehouses across the country, including Lahore, Multan and Rahimyar Khan onto solar energy. This initiative will bring down the operational cost by providing a renewable source of green-energy.

The Country General Manager of Syngenta Pakistan – Zeeshan Baig addressed the stakeholders at the inaugural ceremony of the new solar energy system at Syngenta’s plant in Karachi, and stated that: “This is an important milestone for Syngenta, Pakistan to be converting its manufacturing facility onto Solar Energy. As a responsible corporate entity Syngenta Pakistan is committed to playing its part in ensuring sustainable growth, as it is fully aligned with Syngenta Group’s global sustainability vision.”

The global objective of Syngenta is to help feed a growing population, by bringing plant potential to life, while it also aims to reduce the intensity of its carbon footprint by 68 percent, based on value-added by 2030, compared to the 2016 baseline. This target is consistent with reductions, required to limit global warming to well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

Syngenta’s supply-chain accounts for about 90 percent of its total carbon footprint, while 10 percent of emissions come from the company’s operations. To achieve the 2030 carbon intensity reduction target, it is focusing on improving the efficiency of its manufacturing processes, designing and implementing site-based energy-saving programs. Thus, increasing the share of renewable sources of energy. It is also partnering with its crop-protection and seed suppliers to reduce their carbon-footprint.

More than a decade ago, Syngenta Group was one of the first companies in the industry to launch a plan that served as the organization’s sustainability compass. With the global population on track to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, farmers need to grow more food, while reducing their impact on the environment and safeguarding natural resources. The environmental sustainability requirements outlined in the HSE Code of ‘Practice on Environmental Sustainability’ ensure that Syngenta operations are aware of their resources usage and implement programs to conserve natural resources, minimize environmental impact, and adopt more sustainable practices, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and optimization of logistics network.

Asad Shafiq Clears the Air on Haseebullah’s Exclusion

Asad Shafiq Clears the Air on Haseebullah’s Exclusion

Pakistan cricket fans were left scratching their heads when young wicket keeper-batter Haseebullah Khan was left out of the squad for the ongoing New Zealand tour.

Many assumed it was due to performance issues or an injustice with the youngster, but national selector Asad Shafiq has now set the record straight.

Injury, Not Performance, Kept Haseebullah Out

Speaking at an event in Karachi, Shafiq dismissed all speculation, confirming that Haseebullah’s omission had nothing to do with his form. Instead, it was an injury that forced the youngster out.

“Haseebullah ko Australia mai chance diya tha, magar injury ki wajah se woh bahar hogaya. Jab woh rhythm mai aayega toh usay phir se moka milega.”

This should put an end to all the unnecessary debate. Haseebullah is still very much in the selectors’ plans—he just needs to recover fully.

Pakistan’s Selection Process: A New Direction?

One of the most promising takeaways from Shafiq’s comments was his commitment to domestic performers. He assured that Pakistan’s new players are being selected purely on merit and based on their performances in domestic cricket.

“Hamara kaam hai domestic ke ladkon ko moka dena. Jo perform karega, usay chance milega.”

Must Read: PCB Slams “Propaganda” on Champions Trophy Financial Loss

This is a refreshing shift in Pakistan cricket—gone are the days when selections felt mysterious and inconsistent. Now, if a player performs well in domestic cricket, they’ll get a fair chance at the international level.

T20 World Cup Plans & Stability in Selection

With the T20 World Cup approaching, Pakistan is focused on building a strong squad. Shafiq acknowledged that T20 cricket is high-risk, so testing different players in various conditions is crucial.

“T20 cricket mai risk zyada hota hai, isliye players ko moka dena zaroori hota hai. Aur jo bhi team mai aya hai, usay pura chance milega.”

At the same time, he addressed concerns about frequent team changes, assuring fans that no player will be dropped after just one bad series.

“Hum bhi chahte hain ke har player ko proper chance mile. Aisa nahi hoga ke ek series ki nakami par kisi ko bahar kardenge.”

This is exactly the kind of clarity and stability Pakistan cricket has needed for a long time!

Asad Shafiq’s statements provide much-needed clarity. Haseebullah’s exclusion isn’t a snub—it’s just bad luck with injury. And more importantly, Pakistan’s selection process is heading in the right direction, with a focus on domestic performance and player stability.

Babar vs Kohli: Ian Smith Weighs In on Cricket’s Hottest Debate

Babar vs. Kohli: Ian Smith Weighs In on Cricket’s Hottest Debate
Babar vs. Kohli: Ian Smith Weighs In on Cricket’s Hottest Debate

The Babar Azam vs. Virat Kohli debate is like cricket’s version of an endless Test match—just when you think it’s settled, someone reignites the discussion. This time, former New Zealand wicketkeeper and respected commentator Ian Smith has shared his take, and according to him, Kohli has taken the lead in this modern-day rivalry.

Babar Azam vs. Virat Kohli: The Battle of the Kings

For the last six years, cricket fans have passionately debated: Who is better, Babar or Kohli? Both are batting maestros, the backbone of their teams, and absolute run machines. Their elegant strokes and consistency make them two of the finest batters of this generation.

But Smith believes the tide has shifted in Kohli’s favor. “They [Pakistan] throw Babar Azam up against Virat Kohli, as king against king. But of late, Virat is winning that head-to-head,” Smith wrote in his recent analysis of Pakistan cricket.

Must Read: PCB Slams “Propaganda” on Champions Trophy Financial Loss

While Kohli has rediscovered his best form in the past couple of years, Babar has faced challenges, both as a batter and as a leader. But is this debate really that simple?

Beyond Stats: The Bigger Picture

Smith’s analysis didn’t stop at individual performances. He also pointed out two key factors affecting Pakistan cricket’s overall progress:

1️⃣ Limited Financial & Playing Opportunities – Unlike Indian players who thrive in the IPL and other big T20 leagues, Pakistan cricketers are banned from the IPL and have fewer franchise cricket opportunities. This impacts both their financial growth and exposure to high-intensity T20 cricket.

“Pakistan players can’t play in the IPL and earn those riches, or in fact, many of the leagues around the world which are principally Indian-owned,” Smith noted.

2️⃣ Unstable Cricket Administration – Pakistan cricket has seen more changes in leadership than any other team in the world. Coaches, selectors, PCB officials, and even captains rotate so frequently that it’s hard to build consistency.

Smith even threw out a fun challenge:

“I’ll challenge you and your mates over a few beers at any stage—name the last 10 Pakistan captains, and I’ll wager you’ll only have to go back seven years or so to line them all up.”

He’s got a point! The constant chopping and changing make it difficult for Pakistan to develop a long-term cricketing vision.

TRG Pakistan Shares Could Drop to Rs64-68 Following Greentree’s Tender Offer

TRG Pakistan Shares Could Drop to Rs64-68 Following Greentree’s Tender Offer

TRG Pakistan’s shares are likely to dip to Rs64-68 a share after Greentree Holdings Limited’s tender offer, as per KTrade’s research. The overseas holding company, which has a substantial holding in TRG Pakistan already, plans to boost its holding to about 64.8% by acquiring a further 35.1% of the shares at Rs75 a share on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).

The tender offer, which was earlier suspended over a shareholder petition, was allowed to proceed following the dismissal of the legal action by the Islamabad High Court. According to the new schedule, the tender process will be open between March 25 and April 4, 2025.

KTrade’s Valuation and Analysis

KTrade’s research puts TRG Pakistan’s post-tender NAV at Rs64-68 a share, based on the firm’s cash holding and investments in Ibex and Afiniti. These do not include anticipated legal and admin costs.

Must Read: Sindh Unveils Dashboard for Schools Rehabilitation

Greentree Holdings’ hostile buyout bid is just part of its continued bid to return monetisation proceeds to TRG Pakistan shareholders. The company also bought $86 million worth of shares in 2022 from the disposal of eTelequote, and the recent offer involves the liquidity of more than $52 million derived from the disposal of TRG’s interests in Ibex, a Nasdaq-listed firm.

Challenges Holding TRG Pakistan Back

Despite its successful ventures with Ibex and eTelequote, which brought a 5x return on total US dollar capital deployed, TRG Pakistan’s potential has been limited by challenges within Afiniti. The exit of Afiniti’s CEO and ongoing shareholder disputes have prevented full value realization.

Foreign divestment expected to earn TRG Pakistan $142.3 million

An Opportunity for Investors to Exit?

KTrade believes the tender offer could be an attractive exit for investors who do not want to hold on to these issues to unwind. Also, post-book closure on February 21, 2025, the market price of TRG Pakistan shares would be based on the NAV instead of the tender price.

TRG Pakistan’s stock closed at Rs70.31 per share on March 19, 2025, an increase of 5.54% with a turnover of 28.32 million shares. This trend might be short-lived as market players wait to see how the tender offer goes and if Greentree Holdings’ increased control will have an impact on TRG Pakistan’s future direction.

The next few weeks will be defining for the shareholders who wish to either get out of the company or stay put for future appreciation.

Hasan Nawaz Breaks Babar Azam’s Record With Century Against New Zealand

Hasan Nawaz Breaks Babar Azam’s Record With Century Against New Zealand
Hasan Nawaz Breaks Babar Azam’s Record With Century Against New Zealand

Talk about making an impact! Young Hasan Nawaz just lit up Auckland with an unbelievable century that not only helped Pakistan crush New Zealand but also rewrote the record books.

In just his third T20I, the 22-year-old went from back-to-back ducks to smashing the fastest T20I century for Pakistan. And in doing so, he broke Babar Azam’s record!

From Ducks to Dominance

Cricket is a game of redemption, and Hasan Nawaz just proved that in style. His first two international innings? Golden ducks. But instead of losing confidence, he walked out to chase a massive 205-run target and produced an innings that Pakistan fans won’t forget anytime soon.

Hasan’s 105 off 45 balls* was pure carnage—17 boundaries, including seven sixes—and he reached his century in just 44 balls, overtaking Babar Azam’s previous record of 49 balls against South Africa in 2021.

Fastest T20I hundreds for Pakistan:
🏏 44 balls – Hasan Nawaz vs NZ, Auckland, 2025
🏏 49 balls – Babar Azam vs SA, Centurion, 2021
🏏 58 balls – Ahmed Shehzad vs BAN, Dhaka, 2014
🏏 58 balls – Babar Azam vs NZ, Lahore, 2023

Pakistan’s Perfect Chase

Chasing 205 is never easy, especially against a strong New Zealand side. But Hasan Nawaz, Salman Ali Agha, and Mohammad Haris made it look effortless.

  • Mohammad Haris gave Pakistan a flying start with 41 runs.
  • Hasan Nawaz then took over, smashing the Kiwi bowlers all around the park.
  • Captain Salman Ali Agha played the perfect supporting role, scoring a composed half-century.

In the end, Pakistan sealed the win in just 16 overs, losing only one wicket. A truly dominant performance!

What’s Next?

With this stunning win, Pakistan now has momentum on their side as they head into the final two T20Is in Mount Maunganui and Wellington on March 23 and 26.

Must Read: Asad Shafiq Clears the Air on Haseebullah’s Exclusion

After that, the focus will shift to the three-match ODI series starting March 29 in Napier, followed by games in Hamilton (April 2) and Mount Maunganui (April 5).

But for now, all eyes are on Hasan Nawaz. From struggling to get off the mark to becoming Pakistan’s fastest T20I centurion, he’s announced himself in style. If this is just the beginning, cricket fans better buckle up—because Hasan Nawaz is here to stay.

The Sindh Education Department has launched a monitoring dashboard to track real-time progress on the rehabilitation of schools across the province.

To ensure transparency and efficiency in school rebuilding efforts, particularly for flood-affected schools, this initiative has started.

At a development conference on rebuilding flood-affected schools, the concerned officials stressed the need for resilient infrastructure and student training in flood risk management.

The rehabilitation of these affected schools was a key topic at this Conference on Flood-Affected Schools. It was organized by the Sindh Education Department in partnership with the Asian Development Bank.

The rest 12,305 of them suffered partial damage, but leaving some structurally unsafe to even function with. The flood disaster led to disruption of education for 2,381,275 students.

Sindh’s government, along with donors and stakeholders has started rehabilitation projects. The first phase of the rehabilition projects will restore 26% of the affected schools, but 74% of them still need additional funding for reconstruction.

Disney’s Snow White is a Woke Disaster

Disney’s Snow White is a Woke Disaster

Have you ever seen someone try so hard to not offend anyone and yet somehow offend everyone? This is exactly what happened with Disney’s Snow White. The live-action movie has Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot alongside a slew of CGI motion-capture dwarves. And let’s just say that people have never been this hostile towards a Disney remake.

An Overview of Disney’s Snow White

Traditionally, the heroine’s name refers to her skin, with lips red as blood and hair dark as ebony; now it refers to the snowstorm that accompanied her birth (completely different from the original).

In the start, Snow White has loving parents, the King and Queen, but after her mother’s death her father becomes infatuated with a witchy new noblewoman at court; this is supposed to be the radical evil queen. Yes, while other fairy tale movies are also focusing on the villain origin story of all these “bad guys”; Disney’s snow white creators just simply opted for the typical wicked woman persona of the stepmother with no background on her. No site of revolutionary “wokeness” when it was needed.

Gadot’s lips are at all times seductively and contemptuously pursed. But later the King simply vanishes from the story and the script ties itself into a few pretzels explaining what is supposed to have happened to him and when.

The stepmom-witch keeps Snow White in Cinderella-style serfdom below stairs where the poor child wanly sympathises with the population’s poverty. As Snow White grows up, the magic mirror breaks the bad news about a change in the prettiness ranking; Snow White is then forced to flee to the forest and stay there once the huntsman has lied to the witch about killing her. And then she meets her seven new best friends. The typical story! The only difference is that the fabled prince is gone and is replaced by a noble ruffian, Jonathan (Andrew Burnap).

What Went Wrong and What Caused the Hatred

Disney’s Snow White is being attacked from both sides of the political spectrum. The movie has been condemned for being too progressive (a Disney princess renowned for her pale skin being played by an actress with Colombian heritage) and not progressive enough (caricatured dwarfs in this day and age).

Read More: ‘It’s controversial and polarising’: is Disney’s new Snow White a poisoned apple?

Moreover, with the Israel- Gaza war, both the main stars in the movie have made pronouncements in support of genocide. All this combined has gotten the movie more bad publicity than one might usually expect.

Rachel Zegler On Snow White's Red Carpet
Rachel Zegler On Snow White’s Red Carpet

Basically, Disney’s Snow White is stacked with a lot of “woke” connotations and performative activism in aspects that weren’t needed. It just looks like the producers wanted to make a typical version as well as a Karl Marx version of the movie, so they just combined all in one and that didn’t workout well. On a good note though, we got two movies in one; if that makes it any better.

Traffic Plan Issued for Youm-e-Ali (RA) Procession in Karachi

Fire Near Electrical Substation Shut Heathrow Airport

Fire Near Electrical Substation Shut Heathrow Airport

Britain’s Heathrow Airport announced it would remain closed all day Friday after a fire at a nearby electrical substation caused a power outage, disrupting flights worldwide.

The London Fire Brigade reported that 70 firefighters were working to control the fire in west London. The blaze led to a mass power outage at Heathrow, which is Europe‘s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport.

Large orange flames and thick smoke rose into the sky. About 150 people were evacuated from nearby buildings, and thousands of properties lost power. The fire brigade said the cause of the fire was unknown.

Disruptions beyond the Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport posted on X: “To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March.” It advised passengers not to travel to the airport.

According to FlightRadar24, at least 120 inbound flights had to divert to other airports. The website estimated that 1,351 flights to and from Heathrow would be affected on Friday, not counting possible cancellations and delays. British Airways alone had 341 flights scheduled to land at Heathrow that day.

Ian Petchenik, a FlightRadar24 spokesperson, stated, “Heathrow is one of the major hubs of the world. This is going to disrupt airlines’ operations around the world.” The impact was immediate, with Qantas Airways rerouting its Perth flight to Paris and United Airlines redirecting its New York flight to Shannon, Ireland. A San Francisco flight was set to land in Washington, DC instead of London. Some flights from the US turned around mid-air, returning to their departure points.

Travel experts warned that the disruption would extend beyond Heathrow. Airlines rely on precise scheduling for planes and crew. Many air carriers will now have to adjust their schedules quickly. Henry Harteveldt from Atmosphere Research Group stated, “The other question is, ‘What will airlines do to deal with the backlog of passengers?’ It’s going to be a chaotic couple of days.”

A Heathrow spokesperson told Reuters that there was no clarity on when power would be restored.

In London, many homes and businesses lost power. The fire brigade reported, “Firefighters have led 29 people to safety from neighbouring properties and as a precaution, a 200-metre cordon has been established, with around 150 people evacuated.”

Meet Blue, NVIDIA’s Adorable AI Robot

Meet Blue, NVIDIA's Adorable AI Robot

At this year’s Nvidia GTC, one thing stole the hearts of the audience: Blue. Introduced by Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, Blue is a short, adorable and Star Wars-like AI robot. Nvidia’s Blue is developed in collaboration with Disney Research and Google DeepMind.

The Purpose Behind Nvidia’s Blue Robot

Nvidia’s Blue is made as a solution to the growing labour shortage. Yes, Huang understood that we human beings can’t do all the tedious work ourselves. He also noted that the global workforce could face a deficit of at least 50 million workers by the end of the decade. This allowed him to recognise a potential gap that AI-powered robots can fill.

The Conference of Blue’s Launch

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang introduced ” Blue” at the GTC 2025 AI conference. At the conference, the audience saw a small yet sophisticated robot make its way onto the stage and interact with Huang.

“Hi, and  Blue!” Huang greeted the robot before turning to the audience and revealing that what they were witnessing was an entirely real-time simulation. “This is how we are going to train robots,” he stated, emphasising the cutting-edge technology of Nvidia’s Blue, which includes two Nvidia computers housed within its compact frame.

Wall Street’s Focus: Next-Gen AI Hardware

While Blue captured attention, Nvidia’s latest AI hardware announcements remained a key focus for investors. This includes the launch of its next-generation AI chips. The company is preparing for a major transition from its Blackwell AI chip architecture to the more advanced Blackwell Ultra. Apart from all this, Nvidia will be launching its next-generation AI super chip platform, Rubin. This superchip is named after astronomer Vera Rubin, whose research provided key evidence for dark matter.

Additionally, Huang introduced two new AI supercomputers — DGX Spark and DGX Station. Both of these computers are powered by Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell platform. These systems aim to provide users with the ability to train and deploy large AI models with or without a data center connection.

Armaghan’s Father Kamran Qureshi Arrested in Karachi

Armaghan's Father Kamran Qureshi Arrested in Karachi

The Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of Karachi Police has arrested Kamran Asghar Qureshi, father of Armaghan Qureshi, in a drug trafficking case.

SSP AVCC Anil Haider Minhas confirmed that police apprehended Kamran from a bungalow in Defence Phase 5, Khayaban-e-Momin. During the raid, officers seized 200 grams of crystal meth (ice), a 9mm pistol, two magazines and ten rounds of ammunition.

Police charged Kamran under the Control of Narcotics Substances Act and for possessing an unlicensed weapon.

The case is linked to the murder of 23-year-old Mustafa Amir, who went missing from Karachi’s DHA on 6 January 2023. Authorities found his body 39 days later in Balochistan.

Police arrested Armaghan Qureshi, an acquaintance of Mustafa, on 8 February after a standoff. He fired at officers during the confrontation, injuring a DSP and a constable. Investigations revealed both men were involved in drug-related activities, particularly the cannabis trade. Armaghan also had a criminal record, including a 2019 drug importation case.

A dispute between Armaghan and Mustafa turned violent. Armaghan invited Mustafa to his bungalow, attacked him with an iron rod and dragged him down the stairs. Later, with an accomplice, he disposed of Mustafa’s body by setting it on fire in Hub. He then ordered his employees to clean the bloodstains and took Mustafa’s belongings, including his phone.

Mustafa’s mother, Wajiha Amir, claimed Armaghan told his father about the crime. Instead of reporting it, Kamran advised his son to flee. She demanded his arrest and inclusion in the investigation.

The case also raised concerns about police involvement. Authorities questioned Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Nadeem of Gizri Police over his contact with Armaghan during the investigation. He claimed it was for official purposes, but authorities suspected obstruction of justice. Officials suspended three police officers for mishandling the case.

The Sindh High Court later ruled that certain decisions, including Armaghan’s judicial remand and the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT), were unlawful, further complicating the investigation.
