“Landowners Remain Untaxed,” Says Miftah Ismail

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail has criticised the government for imposing taxes on those earning Rs 50,000 per month while leaving large farmland owners out of the tax net. Speaking on Tuesday, he said Pakistan is going through a critical economic period, yet the government is inviting businessmen to buy Rs 50 million plots under an amnesty scheme.

He claimed that the country has not received any foreign investment in the last 20 years. “Who will invest when your tax rates are the highest in the world?” he questioned. Miftah argued that excessive taxation discourages investment, making economic recovery difficult.

Her work as a civil rights activist and advocate for Black women deserves more recognition than it gets. So today, on her birthday, let’s look at the extraordinary woman she was.

Fighting Sexual Violence Against Black Women

Long before the bus boycott, Parks worked as an investigator for the NAACP in Montgomery, Alabama. She focused on cases of sexual violence against Black women. One of her most important cases was Recy Taylor’s. In 1944, white men kidnapped and attacked Taylor. Parks helped bring national attention to Taylor’s case and fought for justice.

In 1974, Parks also helped form the Joanne Little Defense Committee. Little, a Black woman, killed a white jailer who sexually assaulted her. Parks stood by Little and helped rally support for her.

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 match between Pakistan and India saw an overwhelming response, with tickets selling out in less than an hour. Over 140,000 fans queued online to grab seats for the highly-anticipated match on February 23 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The demand surged as Champions Trophy tickets became available on Monday, covering both Pakistan-hosted matches and four Dubai fixtures.

Pakistan is set to host ten matches, while Dubai will stage four, including all three of India’s group-stage games and the first semi-final. The final, initially scheduled for Lahore, may shift to Dubai if India qualifies. The tournament, running from February 19 to March 9, features eight teams playing across Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Dubai.

The Pak-India tickets, priced between AED500 and AED12,500, generated AED45.6 million (Rs3.4 billion) in total sales. The eight-team tournament comprises 15 matches, with teams divided into two groups. Group A includes Pakistan, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh, while Group B consists of Afghanistan, South Africa, England and Australia. The tournament opener on February 19 will see Pakistan face New Zealand. The final’s ticket sales will commence after the first semi-final concludes.

Govt to Issue EoI for PIA Privatisation This Month

The government plans to issue an Expression of Interest (EoI) this month in a renewed attempt to privatise the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). This will offer a clean balance sheet and protect the buyer from an 18% GST on aircraft purchases, following the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) approval.

Notably, following the national flag carrier’s privatisation, the aviation sector across the nation will likewise be eligible for this 18% GST exemption. Additionally, this will assist private operators in growing their companies and services.

In a previous attempt to sell this asset, the interested parties had backed down from their plans and even abstained from the bidding process because they believed that the two significant obstacles would make it impossible for them to run the airline. They are now ready to take part in the process. They had previously demanded that the airliner’s balance sheet’s negative equity of Rs45 billion should be cleared and that the GST be removed from the purchase of planes.

The government has now begun the process of absorbing the Rs45 billion negative equity, which consists of Rs26 billion in FBR taxes, Rs10 billion in Civil Aviation charges and the rest amount as pension liabilities, following negotiations with the Fund and the consequent approval.

The government has re-assigned financial advisory for the transaction to British multinational Ernst & Young (E&Y). A portion of the previous payment has already been made, but no additional funds will be paid unless the transaction is completed. During a previous attempt, $4 million of a $6.269 million milestone-based payment was made to Ernst & Young, along with $0.251 million of an out-of-pocket payment of $0.609 million.

The Need for Job Security 

The committee chairman, Farooq Sattar stressed the need to ensure job security for PIA employees for at least five years. The commission assured that employees’ protection remains a priority and will be finalised before the bidding process begins.

The government has already taken over PIA’s liabilities of Rs 650 billion, with an additional Rs45 billion in dues to be settled before privatisation. PIA’s assets are currently valued at Rs155 billion, while its liabilities stand at Rs200 billion. The new buyer will be required to initially add 15 to 20 new aircraft to the fleet.

A negotiation committee has been formed for the contract and Financial Advisory Services Agreement (FASA) negotiations, comprising PC Board members, PC officials and representatives from the Power Division. Upon completion, the FASA will be signed in next couple of days. The completion of prior actions and conditions precedents is crucial for initiating the privatisation process and completing the sell-side due diligence.

The authorities have completed the identification of the 13 bodies retrieved from the Morocco boat tragedy. Diplomatic sources have verified that all deceased individuals were Pakistani nationals.

On January 15, reports emerged that 44 Pakistanis had lost their lives in the tragedy, but local authorities could only recover 13 bodies, which were unidentifiable and lacked proper documentation.

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was invited to assist in the identification process. Photos of the deceased and their fingerprints were communicated to NADRA for verification.

Once NADRA confirmed the identities, they compiled a list of all the individuals known to be dead. Soon, the process for repatriating the bodies of the 13 Pakistani nationals will begin.

A 17-year-old girl was killed in a shark attack while swimming off an Australian island on Monday, officials said.

“Emergency squads were called to Woorim Beach in Queensland to provide medical assistance to the teenager who had sustained serious injuries to her upper body,” an ambulance spokesperson said.

According to police, the teenager was bitten by a shark while swimming in the afternoon off the popular tourist spot on Bribie Island, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the state capital Brisbane.

Christopher Potter, a resident, said that the beach is usually used by swimming groups throughout the day.

“It’s known there are a lot of sharks around Bribie, but this close to shore, it’s still a shock,” he told Australian public broadcaster ABC News.

The waters near the beach are safeguarded using drumlines, barrels secured to the sea floor with baited hooks designed to capture sharks that get too close.

Rupee Depreciates 278 per USD in Interbank Exchange

Due to the increased demand for dollars for import payments, the Pakistani rupee depreciated to 279.04 against the US dollar in the interbank market. On Friday the rupee had closed at 278.95. In the open market, the currency also weakened, trading at 280.88 per dollar, slightly down from 280.79 in the previous session.

According to dealers, the local currency depreciation was driven by importers purchasing dollars to settle their payment obligations. However, the supply of dollars from exporters and remittances was inadequate to meet the rising demand from importers.

Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics shows that the country’s trade deficit expanded to $2.313 billion in January, marking an 18% rise compared to the same month last year. Imports grew by 10% year-on-year to $5.233 billion, while exports saw a 5% increase, reaching $2.92 billion. Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves continue to decline, with rising outflows from special convertible rupee accounts, including bonds and equities. These factors are putting pressure on the local currency.

Experts anticipate the rupee may depreciate to 280 this month and potentially weaken further to 281 by the end of the quarter. Despite the currency’s decline, they highlight that interbank liquidity remains stable. The central bank has efficiently managed foreign exchange reserves while meeting external debt obligations. The reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan fell by $76 million to $11.372 billion as of January 24.
