Pakistan Urges Action on Gaza Crisis amid Ceasefire Uncertainty

Egypt is set to host a summit on February 27, bringing together Arab leaders to discuss developments in Palestinian territories.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Hajji Mohamad bin Hajji Hasan on Monday about the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong support for the Palestinian people and backed calls for an Extraordinary OIC meeting to address the crisis.

Dar also engaged with the foreign ministers of Iran and Egypt a day earlier to discuss the situation. His efforts come in response to former US President Donald Trump’s controversial suggestion of placing Gaza under US administration and relocating Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. The proposal has been widely condemned, particularly by Arab nations, who continue to push for a two-state solution with an independent Palestine.

Egypt is set to host a summit on February 27, bringing together Arab leaders to discuss developments in Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, humanitarian aid continues to flow into Gaza following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that began on January 19. However, the truce remains fragile, with Israel insisting it will not withdraw entirely until Hamas is dismantled. Hamas maintains that it will not release the remaining hostages unless Israeli forces leave Gaza.

Under the ceasefire agreement, Hamas is gradually releasing Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and humanitarian aid. The next phase of the deal includes a full Israeli withdrawal in return for the release of all remaining hostages, including a commitment to lasting peace.

Source: Cricinfo

Pakistan cricket fans held their breath when Haris Rauf walked off injured during the 37th over against New Zealand. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 just days away, an injury to Pakistan’s premier wicket-taker is the last thing the team needs.

Thankfully, the PCB has confirmed that his injury isn’t serious, and he is expected to recover in time. But just in case things take a turn for the worse, who steps up if Rauf gets ruled out?

Let’s take a look at three potential replacements.

Mohammad Ali – A Red-Ball Specialist Who Can Shine in ODIs

A name that might surprise many, Mohammad Ali has been a standout performer in Pakistan’s domestic circuit. While he’s mostly known for his Test exploits, his List A stats are quite decent too.

📊 List A Stats

  • Matches: 39
  • Wickets: 47
  • Average: 31.27

Ali has a five-wicket haul to his name and has shown promise in the shorter formats as well. His recent T20 performances have been eye-catching, picking up 58 wickets in just 32 games.

Pakistan has a history of transitioning T20 stars into ODIs, and Haris Rauf himself followed this path. Ali’s first-class success makes him an interesting option, and he could provide the control and wicket-taking ability Pakistan needs.

Abbas Afridi – A Wicket-Taker Ready for the Big Stage

At just 23 years old, Abbas Afridi has already proven his worth in T20 internationals. He has taken 30 wickets in 18 innings for Pakistan in the shortest format and is a genuine strike bowler.

📊 List A Stats

  • Matches: 28
  • Wickets: 44
  • Average: 23.34

Afridi has already grabbed two five-wicket hauls and a four-fer in List A cricket, proving that he can be a game-changer in ODIs too. He’s skilled with both the new and old ball, which would be a major boost if Haris Rauf is unavailable.

who-can-replace-haris-rauf-in-champions-trophy-2025

His ability to bowl at any stage of the game and his variety of slower balls, yorkers, and cutters make him a serious contender. If Pakistan needs a bowler who can strike early and also deliver at the death, Afridi is the man.

Aamir Jamal – The All-Round Option Pakistan Might Need

If Pakistan wants a like-for-like pacer, Aamir Jamal ticks many boxes. The selectors already considered him before the squad announcement, but in the end, they went with Faheem Ashraf.

📊 List A Stats

  • Matches: 34
  • Wickets: 56
  • Average: 29.33

Jamal has played three ODIs for Pakistan, making him the only one on this list with international 50-over experience. That alone gives him an edge over the others.

aamir-jamal-joins-imran-khan

But there’s more – Jamal can bat. He can clear the ropes when needed, adding valuable depth to Pakistan’s lower order. If the selectors want a replacement who can bring both bowling firepower and batting support, Jamal could be their guy.

Who Should Replace Haris Rauf If Needed?

Each of these bowlers brings something different to the table:

  • Mohammad Ali – A steady pacer with solid red-ball experience.
  • Abbas Afridi – A wicket-taking machine who thrives in white-ball cricket.
  • Aamir Jamal – The all-rounder who can balance the squad.

If Haris Rauf does get ruled out, Pakistan has solid backup options. But let’s hope he recovers in time because having him fit is crucial for Pakistan’s title defense.

Ravi Shastri Backs Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025 Semi-finals

ravi-shastri-backs-pakistan-for-champions-trophy-2025

With the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 just around the corner, the buzz around Pakistan’s chances is growing louder. And guess what? Ravi Shastri, the former Indian cricketer and head coach, has thrown his support behind the defending champions, predicting a semi-final spot for the Green Shirts.

Pakistan’s Recent Form – A Strong Case for Success

Speaking to Sanjana Ganesan on the ICC Review, Shastri highlighted Pakistan’s impressive white-ball performances, particularly their 3-0 clean sweep against South Africa.

“With the exposure they’ve had in the last six to eight months in white-ball cricket, they have put up some really strong performances, especially in South Africa,” he noted.

Home Advantage – A Double-Edged Sword?

Playing at home always comes with massive expectations, especially in the subcontinent. But Shastri believes Pakistan’s depth makes them a dangerous team, especially in home conditions.

“Pakistan are still very, very dangerous, and if they qualify, they’ll be doubly more dangerous,” he further added.

That’s a warning for every team in the tournament. If Pakistan makes it to the knockouts, watch out!

Saim Ayub’s Absence – A Concern?

One talking point ahead of the tournament is the absence of young opening batter Saim Ayub. The left-hander has been in incredible form, and his aggressive batting could have been a game-changer.

Shastri acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic: “They’ve missed Ayub at the top, and he’s a crucial player. But Pakistan have enough depth to be dangerous.”

Sindh Govt Bans Dumper Trucks During Daytime

Sindh Govt Bans Dumper Trucks During Daytime

The Sindh government has banned the entry of dumper trucks into the city during the daytime to reduce road accidents caused by heavy vehicles. Officials announced that dumpers would only be allowed to enter Karachi between 11 PM and 6 AM. The decision comes after a surge in fatalities, with 112 people killed and 216 injured in the last 40 days, several due to dumper-related accidents.

The Sindh High Court had already prohibited heavy vehicles from entering during the day. However, the local administration only restricted trailers, allowing dumpers to move freely. The recent deaths triggered strong criticism of authorities and traffic police for failing to enforce traffic laws. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori also condemned the lack of regulation, urging immediate action.

Following the criticism, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah chaired a meeting to address the issue. The meeting, attended by senior police and transport officials, decided that all heavy vehicles and their drivers must undergo physical verification. Additionally, vehicles must obtain a QR Code-certified certificate from the provincial transport department to operate in the city.

The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board was given three months to shift its dumper truck operations to nighttime. The transport secretary was also directed to inspect all water tankers and bowsers of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation within a month. Authorities emphasised strict enforcement, stating that reckless drivers would not only face fines but also FIRs to ensure accountability.

Lab-Grown Sperm and Eggs May Soon Let Parents Design their Future Children

Lab-Grown Sperm and Eggs May Soon Let Parents Design their Future Children

In a world where science fiction seems to be turning into reality fast, the latest breakthrough in reproductive biology will perhaps soon change our way of conceiving children. Scientists are now on the cusp of successfully growing human sperm and eggs in the laboratory; a development that could revolutionise fertility treatments and change the very notion of parenthood forever.

Understanding In Vitro Gametogenesis (IVG)

This technology, known as in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), is the reprogramming of stem cells or skin cells to act as eggs or sperm. Although it has only been tested successfully in mice, experts believe that its application in humans could be viable within the next decade. IVG could open new doors for those who suffer from infertility or other medical or physical issues.

The potential benefits are staggering. Infertile couples may no longer need donor eggs or sperm. IVG might even eliminate the age barrier to reproduction, meaning that theoretically older people could have genetically related children. Scientists are also looking at multiplex parenting, where a child could inherit DNA from more than two parents, further blurring the boundaries of what family is.

Ethical Concerns and Genetic Selection

As profound as the scientific possibilities of IVG are, so are the ethical concerns surrounding it. Genetic selection is under the spotlight in the creation of embryos in a lab. Are parents going to desire the design of their children according to preferred traits, selecting for intelligence, height, or athletic ability? Perhaps this is one step to a future that eerily mirrors the dystopian vision in the movie Gattaca.

Another significant ethical issue is solo reproduction. If one person could make both sperm and eggs from their own cells, would that be an extreme form of genetic inbreeding? Some experts claim that such practices should be regulated or banned. Another reason is the potential for abuse in the hands of private companies or governments.

Despite these reservations, public opinion overall remains very encouraging, with vigorous support for lab-grown fertility research if subjected to proper and strict regulation. As startups, such as Conception and Gameto, rush forth to make “lab-grown human gametes” a certainty, society better prepare its mind for the dawn of a novel reproductive era that will redefine ‘family.’
