Rajapaksa, Hasaranga bring Shaheens down to win sixth Asia Cup for Sri Lanka

A stunning performance from Sri Lanka helps them beat Pakistan to lift the #AsiaCup2022 🏆

Sri Lanka landed in UAE to participate in Asia Cup 2022, with chaos at home amid economic and leadership crises. Their start to the tournament was even more disastrous, however, despite the chaos, they managed to win their sixth Asia Cup title, thanks to the heroics of ‘player of the series’ Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva.

They were the ultimate underdogs, who the cricket pundits predicted to be knocked out way earlier in the tournament, following their crushing defeat against Afghanistan in the opening game. They lost the game by 8 wickets and 59 balls to spare.

They were bashed black and blue by the media, and everyone wrote them off. The cricketing world expected an India-Pakistan final, or maybe Afghanistan against India or Pakistan. Sri Lanka looked out of the picture. However, as the tournament progressed, the Sri Lankan team kept getting better. They looked like a well-gelled team throughout the tournament, and every player played their role to help the team reach the finals.

However, just like their tournament, the final also started turbulently for them. Firstly, they lost the toss and were put into bat first which is a psychological disadvantage. Then, they lost in-form Kusal Mendis on the first ball (duck), courtesy of Naseem Shah’s brilliant inswinger. Pakistani pace attack struck Sri Lankan batters like lightning and they were stranded at 58 for 5 after 9 overs.

But the chaos did not bother Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga, as they launched a counter-attack against Pakistan bowlers. As the saying goes ‘Fortune favors the brave’, Rajapaksa was dropped twice during his innings, and that too by the best fielder on the Pakistan team — Shadab Khan. During the second drop catch, Shadab Khan collided with Asif Ali which caused injury to both, as mentioned by Pakistan coach Saqlain Mushtaq during the press conference.

Rajapaksa and Hasaranga added 58 runs off 36 balls during their sixth wicket partnership. Rajapaksa attacked more ferociously after the fall of Hasaranga and ended the innings at 71 runs off 45 balls. Sri Lanka recovered from 58/5 to post a fighting total of 170/6. Rajapaksa’s innings is the highest individual score while batting at No. 5 or lower in a men’s T20I knockout game.

Pakistani pacers were brilliant at the start, but they lost the rhythm during Rajapaksa’s onslaught. Naseem Shah and Hasnain gave 40 and 41 runs respectively. Babar Azam also played a gamble by bowling off-spinner Iftikhar Ahmed instead of Pakistan’s second-best bowler Mohammad Nawaz. Although Iftikhar picked up the wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva, but he failed to serve the purpose, to remove Rajapaksa early.

Pakistan’s chase started with 9 runs without any legal delivery by young pacer Dilshan Madushanka. He started with a no-ball and followed up with two wides before swinging another ball down the leg-side to Rizwan for five wides, past the wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. It was followed by another wide before Madushanka landed the first ball on length to Rizwan. The 21-year-old, however, proceeded to bowl out the over by just conceding three runs in the next six balls during a first over that lasted 11 deliveries.

Sri Lankan fielders were energetic from the beginning and kept things tight. The pressure mounted and captain Babar Azam fell prey to Pramod Madushan. Fakhar Zaman came down to the ground with a massive responsibility in the all-important final after a disastrous tournament. But he bagged the golden duck, as an inside edge stuck to the stumps.

Iftikhar joined Mohammad Rizwan with major responsibility on their shoulders, a Rajapaksa-Hasaranga-like partnership was required from them. They launched a counter-attack of their own, but not on par with T20 standards but with ODI standards. They added 71 runs off 59 balls while chasing 171.

Iftikhar’s innings ended at 32 off 31, a memorable innings for all the wrong reasons. At that stage, Pakistan required 78 runs off 40 balls. Everyone expected Rizwan to finally unleash, but he too perished soon after scoring 49-ball 55. He managed to score most runs in the tournament, but the intent he showed in scoring them raised eyebrows. His innings came to an end courtesy of Wanindu Hasaranga, who picked up two more wickets in the same over. That over sealed the deal for Islanders, as there was too much to chase for Pakistan. Sri Lanka comfortably bowled out Pakistan at 147 and win the game by 23 runs. This was also Sri Lanka’s fifth consecutive win in T20Is against Pakistan, under Dasun Shanaka. They bowled out Pakistan 4 times out of these five games.

This loss raises many questions for the Pakistan team, which they need to answer before World T20 next month in Australia. They can’t afford to carry the same fragile middle order in WT20, and the strike rate of their top order is also a worrying sign for Pakistan. On the other side, Sri Lanka’s victory showed that a team should play as a team rather than banking on individual superstars to win a tournament.

Skills Or Connections? What’s More Important For A Better Salary ?

After getting our degree, entering the job market is one thing we aspire to do. Moving up in a world is all about finding a good-paying job to sustain yourself. However, in the race for skills and connections, it is reported that people who take more time to polish and refine their skills have a higher chance of landing a better-paying job than those with fewer skills.

Professor Jeroma Adda from Bocconi University and Christian Dustmann from University College London examined the immediate returns and long-term benefits of certain decisions workers make when entering the labour market. Focusing on German workers over several decades, their mathematical model reveals that certain factors can have an impact on employee earnings. Including their accumulation of human capital, how often they change jobs, and their employee’s ability level.

Skills = High Paying Roles

The study found acquiring more skills, both physical and mental, increases a worker’s chances of getting high-paying jobs. While receiving better offers from competing companies, and avoiding unemployment.

Read More: 7 Common Myths About Entrepreneurs That Aren’t True

The tasks workers were divided into two roles by Adda and Dustmann:

  • The routine-manual (RM) Tasks
  • Cognitive-abstract (CA) tasks.

Routine manual tasks involve well-defined and repetitive procedures. Such tasks require a modest amount of training — such as manual labour on a construction site. Cognitive abstract tasks require more technical and creative capabilities. Such tasks are acquired in school or through a specialized job training program.

The team, further classified each occupation according to the type of tasks they perform. To figure out the return for each skill Results show that accumulating RM and CA skills over an entire career is the most important driver of salary growth. RM skills contribute more significantly to increases in a worker’s earnings during the first few years of their career.

“For workers, we learn the longer-term advantages of accumulating CA skills. The substantial returns individuals may obtain from undergoing training, which may not materialize immediately but have a significant impact later in their careers. For policymakers, we learn that returns to experience can generate inefficiency by locking workers into specific sectors, which may disproportionally affect workers who enter the job market during periods of restricted choices, such as recessions,” the researchers write in a media release.

More Skills = More Offers

While RM skills can help workers achieve a job it no longer helps them advance their career to a higher paying one. Meanwhile, CM skills have a long-lasting effect even though they take a long time to develop.

The study found that jobs that require CA skills have higher average salaries than those in RM sectors. Researchers also found that a subset of skills can also make workers more noticeable among their peers. The more skills a worker holds they are more likely to get recruited for their services.

5 Factors That Are Important To Determine A Car’s Value

factors determine car value

Buying a car may be your dream but selling a car is a nightmare. One phrase that sums up the hard reality of buying a car is depreciation. Depreciation refers to your car losing value over time as a result of wear and tear and it is a frightening term. We do have to sell the car at one point right? How do we assess the car’s value then?

Read more: Is Hyundai Catching Up With Tesla In The Electric Car Market?

Why Does The Value Depreciate?

A brand-new automobile loses 11% of its value the instant you drive it off the lot, according to Edmunds’ automotive analysts. Even if there isn’t a lot of “wear and tear” between the time you get the keys and when you drive off the lot, your car’s worth goes closer to its wholesale cost. After then, for the next five years, the value of your car will decrease by 15% to 25% annually. In essence, your car loses more than half of its worth after the first five years of ownership.

Feeling squeamish right?

1. Make and Model

Check the vehicle’s resale value to be sure it will hold its value over time before you purchase it. Due to their popularity and durability, which often fetch higher resale prices, some brands tend to have better trade-in values for cars than others. Do your research!

2. Age and Mileage

Age has less of an impact on depreciation than mileage but both are important. The typical annual mileage for cars is between 10,000 and 15,000. Your car’s value is more likely to decline steadily the more you drive it and accumulate miles on it. Consider the amount of deterioration your car experiences by driving it six figures worth of miles.

3. Condition

Your used car’s worth is determined. When it will be done, it will be categorized as being in excellent, good, fair, or bad condition. If your automobile looks brand new, you’ll earn the most money for it. However, getting an outstanding condition rating is difficult to obtain. But if you get it, good for you.

4. Trim

Your used car’s worth will be maintained by options like the engine type, all-wheel drive improvements, seat material, navigation, a sunroof, and automatic climate control. Keep getting these updates to give your car the maintained look for a better value.

5. Safety Features

Safety features add to the value of your car a lot. They may not do so directly but indirectly they keep you safe which is very valuable.

Social media taken over by flashy arrow!

Pakistan’s thrilling performance in Asia Cup 2022 has been all the hype on social media lately, with the golden sixes of the young prodigy Naseem Shah, Pakistani pacer against the overwhelming Afghanistan cricket team, in the first two balls of the last over, snatching victory from their jaws. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a bizarre looking red arrow has been making the rounds amongst memes circulating online.

The heroics of the new star bowler have been merged with the mystery of the red arrow. As of now, no one knows the reason behind it. Netizens being the all-time geniuses have begun to ponder as to what is the meaning of the new meme game behind the arrow head.

As usual, many reach out for the comment sections to find the answers, and are met with miscellaneous theories.

Another keyboard warrior shared his theory on the arrow, that it is symbol of transferring bad luck from one person to another, and in this case, Indian former captain Virat Kohli has transferred his bad form to Pakistani skipper, Babar Azam, after which the Pakistani team captain has been unable to score runs throughout the tournament, while Kohli’s form has miraculously returned. This sounds quite believable though, but it cannot be true.

More people poked fun at it, and a rhyme ‘Ye arrow arrow kya hy’ has also been making rounds. Some have been claiming it is directing towards, India, while others have claimed, that no one actually knows the reason behind the ongoing mayhem behind the arrow.

Well, that’s all folks! The mystery is yet to be solved, and the origin of the arrow remains unknown. If you have a hint about it, let us know in the comments.

Denmark to set up Water Purification system in Flood-Affected Areas

Denmark to set up Water Purification system in Flood-Affected Areas

Denmark has announced support for Pakistani flood victims and have pledged to set up a water purifying system in the flood affected regions to provide clean drinking water to the displaced families. The system will be set up by their disaster management team from the Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), which has arrived in Pakistan. The team comprises of Erik Breum-Christensen (team leader), Johan Theil Nielsen and Søren Larsen and seven other members.

In a press briefing today, Maria Ana Petrera, Senior Counsellor, Embassy of Denmark, paid her condolences to the floods affectees all over Pakistan. “I would like to extend sincere condolences on behalf of Denmark to all the victims of flash flood in Pakistan. Our thoughts are with their relatives and the many affected and displaced here in Pakistan.”

She further quoted UN Secretary General Mr. Guterres, who described the situation in Pakistan as ‘monsoon on steroids’ and called it an unprecedented ‘climate catastrophe’.

Petrera said it was a key priority for Denmark to provide flexible and unearmarked funding to our humanitarian strategic partners to allow them to respond quickly in times of urgent need, such as in the case of the ongoing flooding in Pakistan. “Denmark has come forward in these testing times to offer a major drinking water facility that will provide up to 120,000 litres of clean water a day.”

She said Denmark has therefore supported the UN’s (humanitarian) flash appeal for Pakistan with 10 million Danish kroner to the UN Refugee Organisation, UNHCR. This funding, she added is provided in addition to Denmark’s core funding for Pakistan and the region of 50 million Danish kroner annually.

With this funding, UNHCR, that has already started their aid work, will be able to expand their efforts. Their focus remains particularly on emergency relief – providing tents and blankets and protection of vulnerable groups including women and children.

Expressing her concern, she further said that the Danish government have also extended an offer for immediate relief assistance to Pakistan who are going through this devastating crisis. “Diseases such as cholera, scabies, typhoid and ringworm are often spread in the wake of such floods, especially due to the lack of accessibility to clean drinking water,” said Petrera.

Denmark is the sixth largest donor to the UN’s Central emergency Relief Fund (CERF), which has already provided $3.07 million two weeks ago (22.8 million DKK) for the relief work in Pakistan.

The team lead, Erik Breum-Christensen said as per the requirement, “we shall install these plants in Sindh’s flooded areas allocated by the government and will hopefully start operation from Monday. This will continue for one month and we have a target of providing 3 million litres of water during the next 30 days.”

DEMA’s Water Purification (WP) he said had the capacity to produce up to 120,000 litres of clean water per day for approximately 40,000 people. Since the works in an early emergency phase, all operational cost is covered by DEMA and doesn’t burden the affected country. According to another member of the team, Soren Larsen in total a 10-member team will carry out the water purification operation. So far, three of them have arrived. The remaining will join us in Sindh.

Last week, on the 31st August 2022, Denmark and Pakistan also signed a Green Framework Engagement. And on the 10th of August 2022, both countries signed an agreement for Danish-financing of sustainable infrastructure in Pakistan. These engagements will allow Denmark to cooperate even more closely when it comes to green transition, sustainable development and climate change mitigation. This will assist rehabilitation and reconstruction.

But with the launch of HUAWEI MateBook D 16, it seems like you can have your cake and eat it too. The desire for 16-inch lightweight laptops is on the rise. With a global move towards remote working and studying, there is an increased demand for large-screen, high-performance, lightweight laptops. The new HUAWEI MateBook D 16 is set to meet and even exceed these demands.

The new laptop comes with a comfortable and immersive 16-inch display, thin and light metal body, 12th Gen Intel Core processor, Super Device experience, and more. Here’s a deeper look at it.

A display that doesn’t tire your eyes

HUAWEI MateBook D 16 features a 16-inch Eye Comfort HUAWEI FullView Display. So, you know what to expect here; ultra-narrow bezels and a high screen-to-body ratio. On either side of the display are two 4.6mm ultra-narrow bezels, resulting in a high screen-to-body ratio of 90 per cent. This allows the laptop to house a large screen in a compact body, delivering an immersive viewing experience. The novel 16:10 aspect ratio also aids productivity. Compared to the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, the 16:10 aspect ratio gives a 10% taller display area allowing more screen real estate to view web pages, documents, and charts more effectively. The display also supports a 100% sRGB colour gamut to show richer details and vivid colours for greater visual enjoyment.

Talking about eye comfort, HUAWEI MateBook D 16 display has TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) certification. In addition, the display adopts DC dimming to help alleviate eye fatigue. Interestingly, the whole laptop only weighs 1.7kg[1] with a thickness of just 18.4mm, making it one of the sleekest 16-inch laptops out there.

Next-level performance

The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 is powered by 12th Intel® Core™ H-series processors, with the highest edition running on the i7-12700H Processor that has 14 cores and 20 threads. It offers a TDP of up to 40W, and the multi-thread performance is 97.3% better than the previous generation. That means even heavy tasks such as data analysis, technical drawing, and code compilation are going to run smoothly. All variants in the HUAWEI MateBook D Series come with a PCIe NVMe high-speed solid-state drive. This gives a remarkable boost in loading apps and games, ultimately delivering a smoother user experience. The laptop comes with two modes of operation. The Standard Mode is designed for users to handle daily office tasks, while the Performance Mode is suitable for performing heavy-duty work and professional software. By pressing the Fn and P keys at the same time, the user can easily select the optimal mode for the current tasks.

Super Device delivers a cohesive multi-device experience

The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 takes multi-device collaboration to a whole new level, thanks to Super Device, bringing super productivity with a cohesive multi-device experience. It lets you effortlessly connect to other Huawei devices nearby, and collaborate between them all. Simply place your Huawei earphones, mice, keyboards, speakers and printers close to the HUAWEI MateBook D 16, and the laptop will automatically discover them and provide a prompt for quick and easy pairing.

In addition, with smartphones like the newly launched HUAWEI nova 9, it is even more useful. Once you have wirelessly connected your phone, you will see its UI (User Interface) appear on your laptop screen, so you can operate it as if your smartphone and laptop are one device. You can access and edit your files, use and manage up to three phone app windows simultaneously, take video or audio calls from your phone through your MateBook, and even use your mouse and keyboard to control your smartphone.

Superior video conferencing experience

The 1080P camera with an 88° wide field of view at the top of the HUAWEI MateBook D 16 screen is a huge step up from traditional 720P cameras. This is further enhanced by the AI Camera smart feature that processes the video with AI algorithms at the system level, adding video effects like Virtual Background, FollowCam and Eye Contact, which are even supported by third-party video calling applications.

During a video call, the AI Camera’s FollowCam adjusts the screen in real-time to keep the speaker in the centre of the shot; so even if they are moving around, you never get distracted from what they are saying. The Eye Contact function uses AI to intelligently adjust to the user’s line of vision. So, rather than seeming like they’re looking into the camera, their eyes will be looking into yours on the screen for a more natural and comfortable conversation.

Virtual background lets you keep your privacy and your concentration, thanks to built-in static and dynamic backgrounds such as offices, coffee shops or outdoor scenery. You can also choose an image to have as your background or use the AI background blur to distort what is happening behind you.

HUAWEI MateBook D 16 features a quad-mic setup placed along the laptop’s edges, supporting sound pick-up from sources up to five metres away from the device. You will be clearly heard during online meetings even when you are a bit far away from the laptop. The AI noise reduction algorithms will also reduce the background noise, and the Personal Voice Enhancement helps the audience focus on you to make the experience even better.

Does Social Stress Accelerate Aging Of Immune System?

Stress — in the form of traumatic events, job strain, everyday stressors and discrimination accelerates the aging of the immune system. While potentially increasing a person’s risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and illness from infections such as COVID-19. A new USC study reports.

The research, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could help explain disparities in age-related health, including the unequal toll of the pandemic, and identifying possible points for intervention.

“As the world’s population of older adults increases, understanding disparities in age-related health is essential. Age-related changes in the immune system play a critical role in declining health,” said lead study author Eric Klopack, a postdoctoral scholar in the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.

“This study helps clarify mechanisms involved in accelerated immune ageing.”

As people age, the immune system naturally begins a dramatic downgrade, a condition called immunosenescence. With advanced age, a person’s immune profile weakens. Including too many worn-out white blood cells circulating and too few fresh, ‘naive’ white blood cells ready to take on new invaders.

“People with higher stress scores had older-seeming immune profiles, with lower percentages of fresh disease fighters and higher percentages of worn-out T-cells,” Klock said.

Study Findings

To measure exposure to various types of social stress, the researchers analyzed responses from a national sample of 5,744 adults over the age of 50. They answered a questionnaire designed to assess respondents’ experiences with social stress. Including stressful life events, chronic stress, everyday discrimination and lifetime discrimination.

Blood samples from the participants were then analyzed through flow cytometry. It is a lab technique that counts and classifies blood cells as they pass one by one in a narrow stream in front of a laser.

As expected, people with higher stress scores had older-seeming immune profiles. With lower percentages of fresh disease fighters and higher percentages of worn-out white blood cells. The association between stressful life events and fewer ready-to-respond, or naive, T cells remained strong even after controlling for education, smoking, drinking, BMI and race or ethnicity

“In this study, after statistically controlling for poor diet and low exercise, the connection between stress and accelerated immune agingwasn’t as strong,” said Klock.

“What this means is people who experience more stress tend to have poorer diet and exercise habits. Partly explaining why they have more accelerated immune ageing.”

Improving diet and exercise behaviours in older adults may help offset the immune aging associated with stress.
