The Karachi Traffic Police Chief has issued the Muharram procession traffic plan. A traffic diversion plan has been released so that all the citizens of Karachi face fewer problems whether they’re part of the processions or not.

The upcoming processions will take place during the days of Ashura, Muharram 8, 9, and 10, as reported by sources. The plan includes designated alternative routes to manage traffic in the city during the processions. Here are the key details of the traffic plan:

Muharram 8 (July 27):
The main procession will begin at 1:30 pm from Nishtar Park and pass through various streets before concluding at the Hussainian Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
Muharram 9 (July 28):
The procession of religious scholars will start at 9 am from Liaquatabad Imambargah and reach Nishtar Park, where the main assembly will be held. The procession will then continue through several streets to reach the Hussainian Iranian Imambargah.
10th Muharram (July 29):
A large assembly will be held at Nishtar Park from 7:30 am to 9 am. Afterward, the main procession will move towards the Hussainian Iranian Imambargah through different streets.

Traffic Diversions

Vehicles coming from the city will be diverted from Soldier Bazaar (Bahadur Yar Jung Road), Coast Guards HQ, and Ankle Saria Chowk to Jubilee or Nishtar Road.
Vehicles from Nazimabad to MA Jinnah Road will be diverted from Lasbela Chowk on Nishtar Road leading towards Garden.
Vehicles from Liaquatabad to MA Jinnah Road will be diverted from Teen Hatti Chowk on Jail Road leading towards Martin Road.
All traffic on University Road towards MA Jinnah Road will be directed towards the New MA Jinnah Road.
Vehicles coming from Super Highway, Gulberg, to MA Jinnah Road, will be diverted via various roads to Mauripur.

Important Notice

No traffic will be allowed on the procession routes beyond Gurumandir Chowk.
Only vehicles with stickers indicating participation in the procession will be allowed on MA Jinnah Road.
The procession participants’ routes have been specified from different parts of the city to Numaish.

Various locations have been marked for diversions to ensure a smooth traffic flow during the processions. Please follow the instructions and diversions for a hassle-free commute during this significant religious event. Caution taken by you leads to safety for everyone.

On Wednesday, the Sindh Home Department has taken a significant step to enhance security during Muharram processions and religious events. They have issued a notification prohibiting the use of drone cameras during these occasions, citing potential security risks. The ban encompasses all types of coverage and recordings using drone cameras, and no permissions will be granted for such activities.

In the interest of maintaining a safe environment, the authorities have also stated that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating this ban.

Furthermore, to ensure law and order during Muharram, the Federal Ministry of Interior has made a crucial decision to deploy Pakistan Army troops countrywide. This move comes under Article 245, and the deployment has been requested by the provinces, Gilgit Baltistan, and the Azad Kashmir government. The primary objective is to bolster security and provide necessary support to local law enforcement agencies during this sensitive period.

Furthermore, Punjab government, recognizing the importance of security during Muharram, has specifically requested the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers in the province. This joint effort is aimed at safeguarding public safety and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the religious events.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant Rs7.50 hike per unit in power tariff, which is expected to put a heavy burden on electricity bills. This decision was taken in response to the government’s request to increase the basic power tariff. The new tariff is set to be applicable from July 1, pending notification from the federal government after NEPRA’s approval. However, lifeline customers will be exempted from this increase in electricity prices.

The impact of this tariff hike is particularly concerning for the people of Karachi, who are already struggling with the burden of numerous bills. With the average tariff rising from Rs22.59 to Rs29.36, households consuming up to 300 units will see their average tariff reach Rs50 after adding taxes. For those using up to 700 units, the tariff will exceed Rs60 with the inclusion of taxes and surcharges.

However, the government estimates that this increase in the basic tariff will generate a revenue of Rs600 billion. Peak hour tariff will also witness an increase of Rs6 per unit.

For domestic consumers, the new rates will be as follows:

Up to 100 units per month: Rs3 per unit
Between 101 and 200 units per month: Rs4 per unit
Between 201 and 300 units per month: Rs5 per unit
Between 301 and 400 units per month: Rs6.50 per unit
Between 401 and 700 units per month: Rs7.50 per unit and above.

Surfshark, a VPN and cybersecurity provider, released a new report revealing Pakistan’s rank among the worst countries for internet restrictions in the first half of 2023. The Internet Shutdown Tracker recorded 42 new global internet restrictions, with Pakistan accounting for three. These restrictions followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9.

During this period, Pakistan curtailed the use of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Additionally, the country experienced temporary cellular network interruptions for several days after the arrest.

According to Surfshark’s report, Pakistan stands third, trailing Iran and India in countries with the most internet restrictions during the first half of 2023, primarily observed in Asia.

Iran experienced 14 incidents of internet disruptions during Friday protests in Zahedan after the Zahedan massacre. India closely followed with nine confirmed instances related to various protest events.

The report intriguingly mentions two additional internet shutdowns in ‘Jammu and Kashmir,’ reportedly ordered by the Indian government, which, if included, would raise India’s total count to 11 within this timeframe.

Interestingly, over two-thirds of the new disruptions (30 out of 42) were triggered by public dissent over social and political issues. This emphasizes the crucial role of the internet as the primary platform for exchanging vital information during episodes of civil unrest.
