NUR-E: Pakistan’s First Indigenous Electric Car Unveiled On 75th Independence Day

14th August 2022 marked the 75th Independence Day of Pakistan, and DICE Foundation made the day even more special with a perfect gift to the nation; Pakistan’s first indigenous electric car, Nur-E 75 the prototype of which was unveiled in Karachi, displaying all its features.

The car is named Nur-E, ‘Nur’ means ‘light’, while ‘E’ denotes ‘electric’. And the name of the brand is named ‘JaXari’, after a Muslim scientist, Ismael Al-Jazari, who was known as the first Muslim mechanical engineer.

Nur-E is a 5-seater hatchback car, with peak power of 107 HP (80 KW) and peak torque of 200 Nm. It has a 35-kWh battery, which can be charged in 7 to 8 hours from a regular 220V connection. With a fully charged battery, the car will be able to cover a distance of 210km at a speed of 120 kph.

The car has been developed and designed by DICE Foundation, with the help of Pakistani automobile experts from NED University, Sir Syed University, and other institutions. DICE Foundation is a US-based non-profit organization run by Pakistani expatriates and headed by Dr. Khurshid Qureshi.

Dr. Khurshid Qureshi is an expert on the development of autonomous vehicles and has worked with notable automobile companies across the globe. He presented the car and explained its features during a presentation.

He said, “This electric car will play a phenomenal role in the context of the environment and climate change, and will help us move away from non-renewable fuel consumption. This prototype is a 5-seater hatchback, but we also have plans to develop a sedan and small SUV on the same platform”.

He stressed the importance of innovation and called this innovation, a game-changer for Pakistan’s automobile industry, as well as its economy. He was reluctant to share the price bracket of the car, citing it’s still in the production phase and will take at least two years for its mass commercial production. However, he hinted toward a price range of over Rs. 3 million.

He also acknowledged and showed gratitude towards all the partners who facilitated this project, namely NEDUET, DSU, NCA, TEVTA Punjab, NUST, SSUET, and Amreli Steels.

Filmmaker Amena Khan, who is also a member of the DICE Foundation, called it “a huge feather in Pakistan’s cap”, during this time of political and economic turmoil.

Former Chairman of the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts & Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) Mashood Khan was also in attendance, stressing the need to appreciate and promote the efforts to make this car. “It is a great achievement that Pakistan has designed its own electric car. We should start now to be a part of the global race when electric vehicles begin to dominate by 2040,” said Khan.

The landmark unveiling event was attended by notable figures from the business community, the auto industry, and the engineering community. They acknowledged the efforts of the DICE Foundation and thanked Dr. Qureshi and his team for developing the vehicle.

What Are Persian Rugs?

Persian rugs are hand woven with the finest materials including wool and silk. They originate from Iran and initially began as a way for Iranians to keep their heritage and history alive. These Persian rugs can take years or even decades to become finished products. There’s also a myth that carpet weavers in Iran can be distinguished by their bent backs.

The authentic Persian carpets and the traditional methods of producing them all began in Iran. In actuality, each Persian rug is regarded as a piece of art that reflects the history and culture of Iran.

What Are They Made Of?

Traditionally, Persian rugs are made from sheep’s wool. The wool is boiled, spun, and dyed by hand. The bright and vivid colors you see on it are also not artificial! They are elaborate yarns that are dyed with natural colorings from plants and insects.

A common highly-detailed Persian silk rug can have over 1,000 knots per square inch. Each knot is a meticulous task and there are several types of Persian rugs. There’s one type that has to be knotted from bottom up which leaves its weavers with terrible backs!

The Most Expensive Rug Ever Sold and How To Make Them

The most expensive Persian rug ever bought was a 17th-century Persian vase-style carpet. It was recently sold at auction in June 2013 in London for a whopping $33.8 million.

People say that there is no formula to make a Persian rug. The philosophy is to “feel this with your flesh, skin, and bones.” It is also said that “someone who weaves a good Qashqai carpet, for example, cannot weave a good Tabriz carpet. Or the one who weaves a superb Tabriz carpet cannot weave a good Isfahan carpet.”

Where To Get Them Locally?

Shahnameh is a local brand in Pakistan that features authentic Persian carpets at a variety of prices. They have one showroom in all of Lahore which has been there for decades. Check out their variety to get your very own Persian carpet!

Is Using Your Phone Causing Injuries? Here’s What You Need To Know

Health care professionals have warned regarding the grave consequences of excessive smartphone usage. According to the data, the patients reporting neck, joint, and muscle ailments are at an all-time high. Smartphone-related injuries have gone viral over recent years. The smartphone pinky is the most common amongst them.

Orthopaedic surgeon Peter J. Evans, MD, PhD, says, “Constant cellphone use can cause a range of joint problems. While some claims of injury might be overstated, others are real and involve serious, long-term damage.”

Injuries Associated With Smartphone Usage

A study reported that bending the head, neck, and shoulders over cell phones and handheld devices, along with distorted neck positioning when sitting, studying, and watching television, can lead to incrementally increased stresses in the cervical spine area.

The positions and movements caused by these devices cause undue damage and strain to the muscles and joints that aren’t used to staying in that position for a long time.

Take a look at some of the common smartphone-associated injuries.

Read More: Why Is Comfort Zone Bad For Your Career?

Forward Head Posture

Poor head posture, also known as ‘Text Neck’, has become one of the major problems with people extending their necks beyond their shoulders for texting. The increased muscle tension increases the chances of nerve pinching and slipping the disk. People holding these positions for a long time will eventually see their posture degenerating with a curvature of the neck bending over time.

Texting Thumb Injuries

Synovium is the tissue surrounding the tendons. Studies have linked tenosynovitis of the thumb, called De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, to frequent smartphone use. Phone use could also worsen symptoms among people who already have arthritis.

Tendons are strong bands of tissue that form the scaffolding for the muscles and bones. The tendons travel from the forearm across the wrist to the thumb. The tendons pass through a narrow tunnel that helps keep them in place, ending at the base of the thumb. The repetitive motion injury due to texting can lead to increased strain in the tendons which can worsen over time.

Smartphone Pinky

While the so-called smartphone pinkie isn’t an established condition, it’s possible that using your pinkie to hold the weight of your phone could cause problems over time. It is characterized by a widening gap between the ring and the pinky finger. The online images of smartphone pinky show a variation in anatomy. However, this can be subjective and does not highlight a severe problem.

According to Dr. Evans, “It’s also possible that people who think they have smartphone pinky could have an underlying condition. Supporting your phone with your pinky could compress a nerve in your finger. Over time, you could experience pain, numbness or tingling.”

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Frequent phone use can also affect the nerves. When we hold our phones in front of us with our elbows bent, we compress the ulnar nerve, which runs from the neck to the hand. This constriction can cause numbness and weakness in the pinky and ring fingers. Over time bending your elbow causes traction and places pressure on your ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel. Repeated elbow bending can cause long-term nerve damage. This condition can also mimic a smartphone pinky; hence if you are facing issues, the underlying problem might be due to your elbows.

How To Lessen The Strain

Downsizing to a small phone can solve most of the problems. Using the voice-to-text option to reduce the strain on fingers can also help the pain to dissipate quickly. Using phone grips and stands to reduce the pressure on your neck and hand joints can also aid in pain resolution.

However, if you’re experiencing a lot of pain, it’s a good idea to see a physical therapist or a doctor, such as an orthopedist or a physical medicine specialist, as they can recommend treatments and stretches. The key is to catch these things early. They don’t tend to become chronic.

For realme, the strong presence of its fans has always been felt in every step of the journey to grow to the heights that the smartphone brand has reached now. realme aims to maintain a certain level of transparency with its community of fans. The release date of Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 and the new earbuds, Galaxy Buds2 Pro will be released on August 26th across stores. The countries where it will be released are selected, namely the United States, parts of Europe, and South Korea.

The Growing Demand

The Counterpoint Research suggests that global shipments of foldable smartphones will grow to 16 million units this year alone. This is a huge jump from the 9 million units shipped last year. The demand is also not expected to slow down, making Samsung the leading company to capture the demand.

The market, however, was expected to shrink. This is because consumers were showing reduced spending patterns due to global inflation. However, foldable smartphones are likely to fare better as they offer more at much lesser prices.

Here’s How You Can Protect Your Privacy On WhatsApp

Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has begun a new WhatsApp privacy campaign by announcing three new upcoming features. The new features arriving on WhatsApp will include blocking people from taking screenshots of a photo or video when you’ve used the existing ‘view once’ feature to share it, exit group chats without notifying everyone, and controlling who can see when you’re online.

The new features were announced by WhatsApp Head, Will Cathcart, and Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, on Tuesday, August 9.

Last Seen Status

While earlier, users could only hide their ‘last seen status, the new feature now allows you to hide your ‘online’ indicator or choose whom you want to share the position with. You can either completely hide the last seen online status from everyone, only unknown numbers, specific contacts, or from nobody. The feature will add a new ‘who can see when I’m online’ option under the last seen settings, with two options – ‘everyone’ and ‘same as last seen.’

Leave Groups Silently

Users can now leave group chats silently, without WhatsApp showing a ‘person left the group’ alert on the chat. The app alerts all group chat members to someone leaving or being removed by default. With the new feature, WhatsApp will only notify the group admin about a user leaving the group.

Viewed Once

The ‘view once’ messages allow users to send media files that are only viewable once. However, these still allowed people to take screenshots of the media file. Now, WhatsApp has added a screenshot blocking feature on ‘view once’ messages that will enable users to stop people from taking screenshots of their images.

The way you use a smart band has changed and here is why you would need a larger display and longer battery life

Remember a time where smart bands used to be just a thin band that was tightly wound around your wrist? Those with a small monochrome display or a set of LED indicators, or some without either? Those were the days when a smart band served just a few main purposes, keeping track of fitness or few notification alerts. However in today’s connected world we demand a lot more from our trusty wearables, leading to strong health management features and even larger displays with longer battery life. While some of these features are more commonly found on smartwatches, smart bands usually tend to struggle a bit here. This is where Huawei’s newly launched HUAWEI Band 6 comes into play with all of the smartwatch-like features, packed into its more affordable smart band body enabling it do a lot more than just a band.

But let’s look at what exactly we do differently with our smart bands today. For starters, with more attention being paid to the overall health and fitness, it is more convenient to access this data on the display of the smartwatch itself, as opposed to using a separate app every time. For example if you want to keep an eye on your important health indicators, such as blood oxygen levels (SpO2) at all times. With the HUAWEI Band 6, not only do you get a constant monitoring of these factors, but you can also view it in its large 1.47 inch AMOLED display.

Speaking of large displays, the HUAWEI Band 6’s display sets it apart from other smart bands: the overall large size allows for more screen space and an immersive experience. This means you can view all your notifications, health and fitness alerts and more on your smart band itself, all while not having to spend the extra money for a full-fledged smartwatch.

Another feature that you are going to depend on is battery life: While some of us leave devices charging over night or charge them only when needed, there is the risk of forgetting to charge it entirely. Huawei solves this pain point with a long lasting battery life on the HUAWEI Band 6, which can last for two whole weeks on a single charge. Basically this means you don’t need to charge it as much as other devices and you are always ready to go!

However, even with all these changes, the core purpose of a smart band doesn’t change, which is in fact its fitness tracking capabilities: HUAWEI Band 6 packs in 96 workout modes that are automatically detected and tracked to get accurate data during performance. Huawei also includes the HUAWEI TruSportTM algorithm, which deeply analyzes your exercise capabilities and provides detailed assessments such giving you a more comprehensive report of your progress.

With users today depending more on their wearable devices for being on top of their health and everyday alerts, it is no surprise that key features like display and battery life play a vital role. While smartwatches usually have these features, their price point can make it a costly affair. The alternative is smart bands, which lack said features. However, with the HUAWEI Band 6, you get all the features you would see in a smartwatch, but for the more affordable price of a smart band, making it much more accessible for everyone.

Daraz Becomes Digital Streaming Partner for Asia Cup 2022 in Pakistan

Daraz

As the Cricketing season is approaching quickly, the whole nation is eagerly anticipating the clash of the year, Pakistan v India on 28th August 2022, as the two teams go head to head in the group stages of Asia Cup 2022.

Daraz App, historically, has been the favourite destination for all Pakistani cricket lovers to stream cricket. ICC WC T20 fixture of India v Pakistan saw the highest concurrent viewers of 2.7 million, ever recorded on a Pakistani streaming platform, and the World Cup as a whole saw a total of 346 million viewers.

Cricket viewers and viewership, in general, have seen a major change in behaviour with most of the audience preferring to watch cricket online and giving the traditional mass-marketing TV Channels major competition. This new trend was due to the scheduling of matches at times when most people are commuting from work and have easy access to mobile phones rather than TV as well as power outages and load-shedding, in Pakistan, which stops them from viewing their favourite sport on TV via cable or satellite. As a result of this, we see an uplift in viewers logging in on Daraz to watch the men in green battle it out on the field.

Chief Marketing Officer of Daraz Pakistan, Muhammad Ammar Hassan, said “With more than 10 million monthly active users, Daraz is the 4th biggest platform for internet users, hence we thought to reignite the passion of cricket and bring the live action to the entire cricket loving Pakistani audience”.

Asia Cup 2022 will commence on the 27th of August, featuring 13 matches. Super 4 round will begin on 3rd September 2022, while the Final will take place on 11th September. Users can watch all the matches of the tournament through the Daraz App from anywhere in Pakistan without missing any moment of the tournament.

Why Trent Boult stepped away from International Cricket?

Trent Boult

Trent Boult is arguably the best all-format fast bowler in this era, with Jasprit Bhumra and Shaheen Afridi. He is only 33 years old and has enough gas left in the tank to reach the coveted 400 wickets landmark in test cricket. However, he chose to give up that dream in order to spend more time with his family and make himself available for T20 leagues across the globe.

Boult had been in touch with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for some time before his big announcement on Wednesday. He asked NZC to release him from his central contract so that he could spend more time with his family and make himself available for T20 leagues. NZC has complied with the fast bowler’s request and has granted his release, which “significantly reduced” his chances to represent New Zealand in international cricket. He will, however, complete the ongoing tour of the West Indies and is highly likely to be selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia.

“This has been a really tough decision for me and I’d like to thank NZC for their support in getting to this point,” Boult said. “Playing cricket for my country was a childhood dream and I’m so proud of everything I’ve been able to achieve with the Black Caps over the past 12 years.”

He further added, “Ultimately this decision is about my wife Gert and our three young boys. The family has always been the biggest motivator for me and I feel comfortable with putting it first and preparing ourselves for life after cricket.”

Trent Boult has been taking time off every now and then, to be with his family and deal with injuries. However, his recent decision is motivated by the financial security provided by T20 Leagues, where he can spend time with his family while making good money in quick time.

NZC released a statement explaining that Boult had made it clear to NZC chief executive David White that his appetite for touring had diminished and he wished to spend more time with his family.

Boult has not retired from international cricket but he is likely to play a lot less for New Zealand. White confirmed that Boult was aware of the ramifications of his decision and that NZC would prioritize contracted players.

“We’ve had several conversations and I know Trent understands that, in terms of selection, NZC will continue to make a priority of those players with either central or domestic contracts,” White said.

33 years old fast bowler also acknowledge that his decision would certainly affect his future selection for New Zealand.

“I still have a big desire to represent my country and feel I have the skills to deliver at the international level,” he said. “However, I respect the fact that not having a national contract will affect my chances of selection.”

Trent Boult has played 78 Tests, 93 ODIs, and 44 T20Is, taking 317, 169, and 63 wickets respectively. He has won the inaugural World Test Championship, while he was part of the runners-up side in the ODI World Cups of 2015 and 2019, and T20 World Cup 2021. In an ideal world, with age, form, and fitness on his side, he could have given a shot to play for another three or four years to play 100 Tests and pick 400 wickets, joining Sir Richard Hadlee, the only New Zealander to pick 400 test wickets. However, he chose to prolong his T20 franchise cricket career, while spending significant time with his family. He is expected to join one of the new T20 leagues in either the UAE or South Africa.

The plethora of T20 leagues in this era has affected international cricket in a big way, with players like Ben Stokes and Trent Boult stepping away from one format or another. There have been cases of players taking early retirement to give more time to T20 leagues, than hectic international tours.

In a T20 league, a player can generate more money than the value of the central contract in a month or two that a league season lasts, have a stable base from which to travel with your family and enjoy a more entertaining experience overall. With T20 leagues stacking the annual calendar, more players will likely step away from international cricket citing workload balance in near future.

The ICC stands awkwardly in the middle of this disastrous situation, trying to spread cricket as fairly as possible while being constrained by the decision-making member boards that seek to maximize profits with more T20 leagues. Although that may not be what the boards or ICC want to hear, the cricket schedule is rapidly approaching its limit.
