PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Turns To AI For Cricket Surgery

pcbs-new-selection-committee-will-it-work-this-time-pcb-chairman-mohsin-naqvi-turns-to-ai-for-cricket-surgery

In a bold move to elevate Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has announced plans to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the selection process.

Speaking at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday, Naqvi shared his vision for a more robust and data-driven approach to player selection, addressing the pressing need for a deeper talent pool.

The Problem: A Shallow Talent Pool

Naqvi didn’t mince words when discussing the challenges facing Pakistan’s senior men’s selection committee. “The problem is the selection committee has no pool to turn to from which to select players,” Naqvi said, shedding light on the limitations the committee faces when trying to find replacements for under-performing players.

The situation is so dire that any drastic changes, or as Naqvi metaphorically put it, “surgery,” are on hold due to the lack of solid data and available talent.

A New Hope: The Champions Cup and AI Integration

To address this issue, Naqvi introduced the Champions Cup, a new domestic tournament designed to unearth fresh talent and create a comprehensive database of player records. The initiative aims to ensure that future selections are based on transparent, data-driven criteria.

“The Champions Cup will produce great talent, and we’ll have records for the games that happen. For surgery, you need all the tools to perform it,” Naqvi emphasized.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this new approach is the use of AI in selecting the 150 players for the Champions Cup. According to Mohsin Naqvi, 80% of the selection process was guided by AI, with the remaining 20% influenced by human selectors.

This blend of technology and human expertise aims to minimize bias and enhance the fairness of the selection process. “Nobody can challenge that. We gave about 20% weightage to our selection committee,” Naqvi said confidently.

The Role of Mentors

To further bolster the development of young talent, Naqvi has enlisted five legendary cricketers as mentors for the five Champions Cup teams: Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik, and Waqar Younis.

Their involvement is expected to nurture the next generation of cricketers, ensuring that they are well-prepared to step up to the national team when needed.

Naqvi is optimistic that the Champions Cup, coupled with AI-driven selection, will not only strengthen domestic cricket but also provide the necessary “tools” for the much-needed “surgery” of the national team.

Despite the promising developments, Naqvi acknowledged the frustration among fans, especially after Pakistan’s recent loss to Bangladesh. However, he defended the selection committee, pointing out that the decision to not play a frontline spinner in the Rawalpindi Test was made by the captain and team management, not the selectors.

Here’s Why PIA Has Banned In-Flight Photos and Videos

Source: Dawn

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has come out with a limited enforcement for its in-flight photography and videography ban, eliciting some interesting sentiments from travellers, fans and aviation hobbyists alike. The airline used to have an unspoken policy against cameras on flights, which are now being curtailed by explicit reminders — especially at key points like takeoff and landing.

Protecting Passenger Privacy and Safety

PIA said the decision was taken in accordance with Pakistan’s aviation regulations that aim to protect passenger privacy and safety. In a statement, the company said this ban is commensurate with international aviation standards that do not permit unofficial photography during departures. The idea is to prevent possible situations from people on board taking photos or videos and sharing them without the authorization of others.

EU ban on Pakistan airlines expected to be lifted today

PIA’s decision, while not unique, other international airlines also have this policy – does provide a platform for discussion surrounding how much privacy passengers should expect versus their ability to document travels. The limitation probably feels like an inconvenience to many travelers in this age of sharing every moment on social media almost as a matter of course. Because, undeniably the beauty of clouds captured 30.000 miles above or that feeling you get on a trip is a big part for everyone (all kind?) when they go travelling as well.

A Necessary Measure

But it is also an important reminder of something frequently forgotten in the age of commercial air travel — that ensuring respect for fellow passengers and their comfort can be just as imperative a task. Not all might like the idea of being shot/ pic catch in a crowded location although someplace like an air plane. It also helps limit situations where a photo happens to include areas of the aircraft that are off limits because yes, those things happen.

EASA Refuses to Lift Ban on Pakistani Airlines
Source:: Sam Suing

The practical direction by the airline is a stark reminder that as humans increasingly rely on technology and social media to help us experience, better share our lives there continue remain areas where lines must be respected. While PIA’s execution of this policy might come off as a step back to some, it is essential for the latter group mentioned (safety comes second when privacy and overall comfort are threatened).

Time will tell as the debate rages on how people adjust, with this strengthened policy and whether it helps to shape larger conversations around privacy in public places.

Shan Masood Defends Bold Tactics After Historic Loss To Bangladesh

shan-masood-dismisses-match-fixing-allegations

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood defended his tactics during the first Test against Bangladesh after suffering a humiliating 10-wicket loss. In a cricketing shocker, Pakistan lost their first-ever Test match to Bangladesh, a defeat that left fans and players alike searching for answers.

The loss, however, didn’t come without its fair share of controversy, especially surrounding Pakistan’s decision to field four fast bowlers on a pitch that many believed would favour spin.

A Risky All-Pace Strategy

Shan Masood, stood firm in his post-match press conference, justifying the decision to go all-out with pace. The team opted for an attack comprising Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shehzad, and Mohammad Ali, all in the hope that the pitch would offer more assistance than it ultimately did.

Unfortunately, the strategy didn’t pay off as Bangladesh piled up a daunting 565 runs in their first innings. But it wasn’t just Bangladesh’s batting that exposed Pakistan’s tactical misstep.

The final day saw Bangladesh’s spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan, wreak havoc on the Pakistani batting lineup, claiming seven wickets and bowling the visitors out for a paltry 146.

This stark contrast in bowling effectiveness only fueled criticism of Pakistan’s selection choices. Shan Masood, however, didn’t shy away from defending the team’s approach.

Read More: What Is Imam-ul-Haq’s Future In Test Cricket?

“Looking at the pitch, we expected it to do more,” Masood explained. He noted that had they played only three fast bowlers, it would have put too much strain on them, forcing their lone spinner to take on a heavy workload—something the team wanted to avoid.

Masood also shed light on the absence of a frontline spinner, pointing out that the team had to make adjustments after losing Aamir Jamal, who contributed with both bat and ball. This, according to the captain, led to the decision to go with an all-seam attack.

Missed Opportunities

The captain was also questioned about the decision to declare Pakistan’s first innings at 448/6, which left Mohammad Rizwan just shy of a well-deserved double-century.

Masood explained that the declaration was a calculated move to push the game forward and put pressure on Bangladesh in the fourth innings. “We could have done with those runs,” Masood admitted, “but there were also things with the ball and in the field that we could’ve done better.”

Read More: Did Shan Masood Stop Rizwan From Getting A Double Century?

Despite the loss, Masood emphasized that not everything went wrong for Pakistan. He highlighted the team’s proactive approach throughout the match. “Even if you lose, it doesn’t mean you’ve done everything wrong,” he remarked, suggesting that the team would learn from this experience rather than panic.

With the second Test just around the corner, set to begin on August 30 at the same venue, Masood hinted at possible changes. He didn’t rule out the return of spinner Abrar Ahmed, depending on pitch conditions and the weather.

As the dust settles on this historic defeat, Pakistan will need to regroup and rethink their approach if they hope to bounce back in the series.

Indian Umpire Trolls Rizwan, Calls Him ‘Pigeon’ Over False Appeals

shoaib-malik-backs-mohammad-rizwan-as-captain

Mohammad Rizwan is a polarizing figure in Pakistan cricket, some people rate him among the best wicketkeeper-batter the country has ever produced, while some think he should not be part of the team at all.

He recently showed his batting prowess during the first Test against Bangladesh, scoring an unbeaten 171 in the first innings, followed by a gutsy 51 in the second innings. Although Pakistan suffered a shameful defeat, Rizwan earned praise for his batting.

But, while his cricketing achievements are remarkable, Rizwan is equally known for his quirky on-field behaviour.

The “Pigeon” Behind the Stumps

Rizwan’s antics have become a talking point in cricketing circles. Whether it’s his exaggerated appeals or his habit of leaping around behind the stumps, Mohammad Rizwan has a knack for getting under the umpires’ skin.

Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary recently shared a light-hearted anecdote that perfectly captures Rizwan’s energetic style. During a chat on the “2 Sloggers” podcast on YouTube, Chaudhary likened Rizwan to a pigeon, hopping around with his constant appeals.

Read More: PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Calls Mohammad Rizwan ‘Unstoppable’

Recalling an experience from the Asia Cup 2023, the veteran umpire revealed how Rizwan’s relentless appealing kept the officials on their toes. “He appeals on everything,” Chaudhary remarked, laughing as he remembered how Rizwan’s antics reminded him of a pigeon fluttering about.

“There was a moment when the other umpire was close to obliging to his appeal but he suddenly recalled my words and turned it down. Isn’t he the one who puts something like a lipstick? He keeps jumping like a pigeon,” he added, with a grin.

A Word of Caution for the Keepers

Choudhary also cautioned all the wicketkeepers to refrain from making false appeals, as seasoned umpires are adept at identifying such tactics aimed at pressuring them.

“If the umpire is good, he can outsmart the wicketkeepers,” he said. “If you appeal for no reason, you won’t even get the right calls,” Chaudhary added, making it clear that experience counts when it comes to standing behind the stumps.

Waqar Younis To Resign: More Musical Chairs At PCB?

how-will-waqar-younis-shape-pakistan-cricket

Legendary pace bowler Waqar Younis joined the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) last month in a powerful role as an advisor to the chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, PCB, an organization notorious for frequent changes, witnessed another surprising twist.

According to multiple reports, Waqar Younis has decided to step down from the role after less than a month of his appointment. This move continues the board’s tradition of constant reshuffling, almost like a game of musical chairs.

Read More: PCB Chairman Appoints Waqar Younis As Adviser: Is It The Right Decision?

A Short-Lived Role

Waqar, who has held various positions in the PCB since his retirement, including multiple stints as head coach and bowling coach, was brought on board in late July. His appointment was seen as a significant move by some while some criticized the decision, considering Waqar’s past issues.

However, reports suggest that Waqar is already looking to resign, and the reason isn’t the shocking loss to Bangladesh earlier this week. Instead, it appears that friction between Waqar and other PCB officials is at the heart of the matter.

Why Is Waqar Resigning?

Since his appointment, Waqar Younis has only made a handful of public appearances, including a joint press conference with Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, sources indicate that Waqar hasn’t been seen at the office for several days.

The problem seems to stem from a lack of cooperation from certain officials, particularly those in the International Cricket Department. This resistance has reportedly left Waqar frustrated, leading him to reconsider his position.

Was Waqar the First Choice?

Interestingly, it turns out Waqar wasn’t the PCB’s first pick for this advisory role. The board initially approached Wasim Akram, Waqar’s longtime partner in Pakistan’s famed bowling duo, but the Sultan of Swing declined the offer.

Adding to the drama, the PCB had published a job advertisement for the advisory role, even after Waqar’s appointment, hinting that the board was already keeping its options open. Now, with Waqar likely on his way out, it seems the PCB will be seeking a new candidate sooner rather than later.

What’s Next for Waqar?

While Waqar’s tenure as PCB advisor may have been brief, his next move could still see him in the cricketing spotlight. There’s speculation that he might take on a mentoring role for a team in the upcoming Champions Cup, which kicks off next month.

Artificial Intelligence is Reshaping Talent and Skills Opportunities in Accountancy

AI provides extra impetus to the skills evolution, but one of the most important roles that accountants can play is in being stewards of innovation.

Lahore, August 23, 2024: Integration of AI in accountancy and finance presents both challenges and opportunities for the profession. But ACCA research suggests that while there is a need to continuously evolve the skillset and knowledge base, there are also strong foundations in place from which finance professionals can position themselves and their organisations for success in this new era.

An ACCA skills analysis of 25,000 accountancy-related jobs found that analytical and audit roles were most likely to require advanced capabilities – such as data science knowledge – while data management skills were in greater demand for transactional roles.

Alistair Brisbourne, Head of Technology Research, ACCA, said: ‘Data skills are always evolving and so it’s no surprise to see that there is emerging demand for data science and engineering skills as well as data management skills by employers.

‘That reflects the importance of data-driven decision making within organisations. But it also reflects a profession that is looking to become more pre-emptive in how we use data to solve challenges.’

The research – AI Monitor: Skills to drive responsible AI adoption – found that shifting to forward-looking predictive analytics and away from backward-looking dashboards requires a change in tools and skillset.

Predictive analytics is a route to tackling important areas including ESG/sustainability and even elements of risk management. Accounting professionals are now expected to understand a wider variety of data types. Indeed, in a survey of over 900 senior finance leaders who are currently using AI, ACCA found that organisations are anticipating that almost half of finance function roles will be more data-centric – i.e data science or engineering type roles – in the future.

Brisbourne said: ‘The integration of AI provides extra impetus to the skills evolution, but one of the most important roles that accountants can play is in being stewards of innovation. That means focusing on value and responsible use of technologies like AI.’

AI Monitor: Skills to drive responsible AI adoption points out that there is a crucial balance to be struck. On the one hand, data literacy is evolving to incorporate specific needs associated with the integration of AI and machine learning.

On the other hand, the research underlined the fact that AI adoption cannot be tackled by specialists alone – accountancy and finance professionals have a unique role to play in bridging the gap between technical teams, the business, and regulators.

Brisbourne concluded: ‘AI adoption is still gathering pace, but the benefits are not a foregone conclusion. That will rely on the right skills and understanding, on the one hand; but success also depends on effective guidance from domain experts like accounting and finance professionals to help them obtain value from those technologies and tackle serious risks.’
