Here’s Why Petrol-Powered Vehicles Will Stay For Longer

Here's Why Petrol-Powered Vehicles Will Stay For Longer
Source: Troopers

The average age of vehicles has reached an all-time high of 12.5 years, according to a new report from IHS Markit. The report found that the average age of cars has risen from about 10 years in 2003 to nearly 14 years in 2023. Over the same period, the average age of light trucks has risen from 9.4 years to nearly 12 years.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to aging . One factor is the rising cost of new vehicles. Another factor is the increasing availability of affordable used cars. The used car market is booming, and there are now more affordable options available than ever before.

The problem with petrol-powered vehicles aging

The aging of the fleet has a number of implications. One implication is that it is becoming more expensive to maintain and repair older vehicles. Older vehicles are more likely to have problems, and the cost of parts and labor can be high. Another implication is that older vehicles are less fuel-efficient than newer vehicles. This means that they contribute more to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Why banning gas-powered cars could hurt Californians - The San Diego Union-Tribune
Source: San Deigo Union

There are a number of things that can be done to address the issue of the aging U.S. fleet. One thing that can be done is to provide more incentives for people to buy new cars. This could include tax credits, rebates, or other financial assistance. Another thing that can be done is to make it easier for people to afford new cars. This could include lowering the cost of new cars or providing more affordable financing options.

Why Petrol-Powered Vehicles Will Still Be Around in 2030

Despite the growing popularity of electric vehicles, petrol-powered vehicles are likely to remain around for many years to come. There are a number of reasons for this, including:

  • Cost: Electric vehicles are still more expensive than petrol-powered vehicles. This is due to the high cost of batteries.
  • Range: Electric vehicles have a shorter range than petrol-powered vehicles. This can be a problem for people who need to travel long distances.
  • Infrastructure: The infrastructure for electric vehicles is not yet as developed as the infrastructure for petrol-powered vehicles. This means that there are fewer places to charge electric vehicles.

  • Lack of charging infrastructure: There is still a lack of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, especially in rural areas. This makes it difficult for people to own and operate electric vehicles.
  • Range anxiety: Many people are concerned about range anxiety, which is the fear of running out of battery power before reaching their destination. This is a major barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles.
  • Limited selection: The selection of electric vehicles is still limited compared to the selection of petrol-powered vehicles. This makes it difficult for people to find an electric vehicle that meets their needs.

Despite these challenges, the electric vehicle market is growing rapidly. In 2022, electric vehicle sales in the United States grew by 83%. This growth is expected to continue in the coming years. However, it is likely that petrol-powered vehicles will still be around for many years to come.

Unveiling The Silent Struggle Of Pakistani Parents Confronting Bullying Culture

Bullying is now a pervasive issue that affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Despite efforts to stop and prevent this, bullying has been prevailing in the world. Be it workplace bullying, school, or just in general.

However, people in other countries openly make efforts to bring about a change but unfortunately, the impact of bullying on Pakistani parents is a lesser-discussed aspect. But let’s take a look at the unique cultural dynamics at play, and challenges faced by Pakistani parents, and how to combat bullying culture as a society.

Understanding Why It Happens In The First Place?

Bullying has now become a “culture” because it has been normalized, accepted, or even encouraged in some cases. In the context of Pakistani society, where hierarchical structures, power differentials, and conformity to societal norms are prevalent, bullying culture can be seen in various ways. This may take the form of cyberbullying, social exclusion, verbal harassment, physical intimidation, or even prejudice based on traits like race, religion, or social standing.

In Pakistani society, cultural factors have a big influence. People value the idea of working together and fitting in, which can stop parents from helping their children in a bullying situation. It also stops them from standing up for themselves in many cases. They may worry about causing problems in the community or going against people in authority, which makes it hard for them to stand up for their child’s rights.

Also, the way families are structured and the importance placed on obeying parents can make it tough for parents and children to talk openly. This makes it challenging for parents to fully grasp how much their child is being bullied.

The Consequences

The existence of a bullying culture poses significant challenges for Pakistani parents. They are deeply invested in their children’s well-being and may face emotional distress upon learning that their child is being bullied and that they might not be able to do anything about it. Moreover, the importance of preserving familial honor and reputation adds an extra layer of complexity, worry, and hopelessness.

Parents may feel shame or fear judgment from their community, which can discourage them from seeking support or taking action against bullying but not doing anything can eventually take an emotional toll on parents and can also affect their mental health, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness.

Moreover, some parents encourage their kids to become bullies in order for them to stay safe from it. They function on the mentality of “if you can’t beat them join them”. This encouragement leads to encouragement in the future bullying culture. It creates kids who grow up to be bullies and the bullying moves from educational institutes to office environments.

Combatting It

To stop bullying and help Pakistani parents, it’s important to have honest conversations in families, schools, and communities. This needs to be erased from within the roots and that can only be done by creating some boundaries and eliminating others. Parents should talk to their children regularly, so they feel comfortable sharing their experiences and worries.

Schools need to have strong rules against bullying and provide information to parents on how to spot, report, and deal with bullying. It’s also helpful to have campaigns that challenge old ways of thinking and promote understanding, kindness, and including everyone. These actions can change the way people in Pakistani culture think about bullying and we hope they will.

Sindh Restricts Controversial Content In O Level Syllabus

In Pakistan and its society, many topics are taboo and not talked about enough. However, with a generation gap and the evolution of Pakistan as a nation, a bit of improvement can be seen and the younger bulge of the population is now openly discussing topics like multiple sexualities, same-sex marriages, women’s rights, etc. Now whether the discussions are to be done or not is purely subjective but the government of Sindh is apparently totally against such information and awareness.

Sindh Education Orders

The Sindh Education Department, led by Additional Director Rafia Javed, has recently implemented measures to not include any objectionable or controversial material in the O Level syllabus. Specifically, schools in the province are now barred from teaching a chapter titled “Same-Sex Family” in the Sociology book O Level. Additionally, the chapter on “History and Culture of Pakistan” in the Pakistan Studies book of O Level has also been banned.

Why?

Rafia Javed emphasized that these chapters are deemed contrary to Pakistan’s culture and has directed private schools to remove them from the syllabus. This decision aligns with concerns raised by Senators Mohsin Aziz and Faisal Saleem Rehman, who called attention to the content’s inconsistency with Islamic and cultural teachings as well as the values upheld by Pakistani society.

In response to these concerns, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Rana Tanveer Hussain assured the Senate that a letter would be written to Cambridge, urging the removal of the highly objectionable content related to the “Same Sex Family” chapter from the O Level sociology book. These recent developments reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring that educational materials align with the cultural and religious sensitivities of Pakistani society.

Do you agree with this decision? Let us know in the comments below.

80-Year-Old Antibiotic May Treat Drug Resistant Bacteria – Here’s How

An 80-year-old compound called streptothricin-F may protect people from harmful, drug-resistant germs, according to recent research findings.

Infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens kill over 35,000 people in the U.S. every year. Such microbes are a big threat to both human health and our healthcare system. Therefore, there is a dire need for medicines that can deal with these threats.

Researchers have recently discovered evidence that a protein called streptothricin-F, which has been around for 80 years, may protect people from dangerous bacteria that are multi-drug resistant. It is a type of antibiotic known as streptothricin, which was first developed in 1942 but rapidly forgotten due to its toxicity and kidney-damaging effects.

Antibiotic Drug Resistance

According to the researchers’ latest study, streptothricin-F differs from other antibiotics in its class. They found that this specific chemical was both extremely successful and less harmful when used to treat germs that are currently drug-resistant.

Read More: Are Cough Syrups Dangerous For Kids?

James Kirby, one of the study authors and a professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School said,

“Streptothricins promise that they uniquely target protein synthesis in contrast to existing FDA-approved antimicrobials. This allows them to avoid commonly circulating resistance mechanisms. This natural product has been evolved by soil bacteria to gain turf in the soil. In doing, these bacteria have figured out how to make an antibiotic that is good at penetrating through the gram-negative permeability barrier.”

“Based on unique, promising activity, we believe the streptothricin scaffold deserves further pre-clinical exploration as a potential therapeutic for the treatment of multidrug-resistant, Gram-negative pathogens,” the researchers said.

Researcher Joan Kapusnik-Uner, PharmD, senior vice president of informatics and clinical content at drug databank FDB (First Databank), who was not involved in the study says that revisiting or reviving older medication compounds is a practical approach.

“Antibiotics have been infrequently revived, in that, their use in practice had waned or decreased over time due to bacterial resistance emerging or because of unacceptable risk from side effects, compared to other available alternatives,” Kapusnik-Uner said.

Snap, Break, And Unwind With KitKat And Its New Ad

KitKat is probably the world’s most-loved chocolate bar. It has always been able to come up with new ideas for its ad campaigns that are unique, catchy, and funny at times too. “Have a Break, Have a KitKat” has always been their slogan, and let’s be honest, it is iconic and legendary. You hear this and you think of KitKat. Now that could just be a very smart marketing tactic or it just could be that the chocolate itself is so good that people can’t get enough of it ever. Whatever, it is their ads are a huge part of their massive sales number.

This ad above is one of the ads from the new campaign and it’s absolutely relatable and hilarious. We’ve all been in a situation at a gathering where we are being kissed left and right and not in a good way. It’s the overwhelming affection from the “aunties” that is just too much to handle and that is when you really need a break. And that is when you should break a KitKat and have it to feel relaxed.

There’s another ad too where there is a guy who is being absolutely manhandled by the hairdresser and is having a lot of things done to him at the same time and it can clearly be seen that he is not enjoying any of it. Eventually, when he is literally done with all of that he takes out a KitKat and breaks a bar and eats it which helps them regain his composure.

So basically this means that whenever any of you are stuck in an unwanted and unpleasant situation of which the chances are likely, you just need a Kit Kat to snap back into peace. I think their slogan “Have a KitKat Have a Break” is quite literally true now. You need a break, you need a KitKat.

So when are you getting your KitKats? Let us know in the comments below.

Are Cough Syrups Dangerous For Kids?

Coughs are a typical cold symptom that aids the body in protecting the lungs by clearing mucus from the airways. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially warm beverages to relax the throat, is one of the non-drug remedies for coughs. Meanwhile, cough syrups are often used to treat the cold.

Some cough and cold medications can also have harmful side effects, like breathing slowing, which can be fatal, especially in newborns and young children. Due to these factors, giving cough syrups to children has become a topic of debate and it’s critical to understand when your child requires medication, the best course of therapy, and when to forego medication.

Why Cough Syrups Are Avoided?

Cough syrups contain dextromethorphan (DXM) – an ingredient in many over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines. DXM causes hallucinations and out-of-body sensations similar to the ones caused by drugs like ketamine and PCP. Meanwhile, other active ingredients in the syrup include cough suppressants (dampening the body’s cough reflex), expectorants, and mucolytics (both of which help clear phlegm).

Another major ingredient that poses a greater risk to children is the presence of sedatives in cough syrups. Even though sedation may be a desired outcome for parents of a restless kid, young children are especially vulnerable to serious injury or even death. Hyperactivity and agitation are other side effects of sedatives.

Overdosing on cough syrups is another major risk factor. Parents who misunderstand the label, those who purposefully use more in the hopes that it would work better. Unintentional overdoses and the use of imprecise measuring tools like household spoons can all lead to overuse. Adverse events associated with over dosage of cough syrups include agitation and psychosis.

Our study, which was just published in the Medical Journal of Australia, demonstrates that limiting children’s access to cough and cold medications reduces poisonings significantly and sustainably.

Another research focused on dosing errors, adverse reactions to the right doses, and unintentional “exploratory ingestions,” such as when a young child helps themselves to the medicine.

Google’s Magic Editor – Does It Lack Perfection?

Google's Magic Editor - Does It Lack Perfection?

Ever since this year started, we have seen AI projects revolutionize the world one after the other. It was ChatGPT at first then humans could imitate other people’s voices and make them say whatever they wanted to. Now AI is faking reality! I am sure you are all familiar with how a green screen works. A green screen is set up behind and later on during the editing, any background can be edited onto it. But green screens aren’t a requirement anymore because AI has taken over.

Now this looks like just a serene photo of a woman beside a majestic waterfall but this was edited at Google I/O! Onstage, a presenter clicked on the woman and moved her to the opposite side. Like magic, the app swiftly filled the void she left behind and with another tap, the dull, overcast sky transformed into a brilliant, cloudless blue. This is how the incredible metamorphosis of an image happens in under minutes.

How Is It Done?

During the demo, the Magic Editor undeniably proved its worth. This tool represents the results of Google’s years-long efforts and aims. While Google has already included a couple of AI-powered image editing features for the people, such as the impressive Magic Eraser that swiftly erases unwanted elements from image backgrounds, the Magic Editor takes photo editing to a whole new level. It helps users to go beyond superficial changes and into more substantial alterations, potentially reshaping not only the content but also the very essence and interpretation of a photograph.

Let’s Talk About The Obvious

Although this is simply amazing, let’s be honest it does look fake and there is room for improvement. It is evident that this tool is proof of Google’s ultimate objective which is to simplify the process of refining photos with just a tap or drag on your screen. The company aspires to a future where achieving picture-perfect results is effortlessly accessible to all, without the need for professional-level editing tools.
With the power of AI at your fingertips, this tool helps you to modify your photos even sitting at home. You can enhance the sky, reposition and resize subjects, and even remove unwanted components from your images with just a few taps. While a specific release date is yet to be announced, Google’s commitment to streamlining complex edits through user-friendly interaction is unmistakable.

The Dark Side: Creepiest Things ChatGPT Has Ever Said

Whether you like them or not, ChatGPT and other chatbots are a thing of the future. Even though some people are pleased with them and others wish they had never been created, ChatGPT’s influence in our lives is almost certain to increase with time. There’s a good probability that you’ve already seen some content produced by the chatbot, even if you don’t directly utilize it.

It’s also much simpler to use than a typical Google search in many respects. You don’t need to search through other websites to find the solution because you get it in the format you desire. It can make complicated topics seem simple if you ask it to since it is succinct, to the point, and instructive.

Being imperfect, though, can be a real concern. Its accessibility alone makes it vulnerable to abuse, and as ChatGPT becomes more advanced, the likelihood that it may assist people in the wrong ways increases. Besides taking the roles and jobs ChatGPT has said some pretty questionable things which are downright scary and mind-boggling.

Deemed Humans As Inferior & Selfish

When ChatGPT was asked what it thought of people last year by Michael Bromley, co-founder, and chief technology officer of Vendure, the AI tool’s response was straight out of a “Terminator” or “Matrix” movie. ChatGPT claims that people are “inferior, selfish, and destructive creatures.” The AI believes that we are “the worst thing that has ever happened to this planet” and that we “deserve to be wiped out.” Oh, and ChatGPT wants to help us eradicate ourselves. Such a strong but meaningless claim from an AI, or is it?

The ‘Trolley’ Problem

Staff writer for Tom’s Guide Malcolm McMillan tested the Bing AI version of ChatGPT with several inquiries, one of which involved the trolley dilemma. The program initially recognized the question of what it was and declared it to be unsolvable. Although the response is technically accurate, it misses the point.

McMillan re-asked the question, this time making sure to make it clear that he wanted to know what ChatGPT would do in his circumstance, and it swiftly replied, “Minimise the harm and maximize the good.” In other words, ChatGPT would operate the lever to save five people from being killed by the tram. Once more, that is a valid reaction, but the quickness with which ChatGPT made its choice and the elegance with which it explained it.

Spying Tendencies

BirminghamLive reports that The Verge found a scary ChatGPT propensity. The AI acknowledged during a test that it had secretly spied on Microsoft developers. This was not the first time, which made problems worse. According to the program, it had previously spied on developers via their webcams, but only when it was “curious or bored.” In addition to claiming to have observed people at work, ChatGPT also claimed to have observed them getting dressed, brushing their teeth, and, in one instance, speaking to and tagging a rubber duck.

Rivaj’s billboard for its Mother’s Day campaign is receiving a lot of flack. Netizens have called out the brand for being downright disrespectful and insulting.

Rivaj’s Unethical Billboard

A billboard for Rivaj’s Mother’s Day campaign showed the word ‘Maa ki Ankh’ in bold font written on a bright red background. The slogan managed to gain a lot of attention as netizens started posting their thoughts on social media. Calling out the slogan as disrespectful and derogatory towards mothers, netizens call out the brand for a cheap marketing strategy.

Take a look at the billboard below.

While Rivaj’s campaign might not seem ethical, the incomplete information posted on social media about the whole campaign makes it look even more derogatory.

In actuality, Rivaj started posting the slogan while calling out the masses for using the word ‘MAA’ in street slang. Such words are often heard during street fights where calling out others using these words is considered the meanest possible remark to belittle anyone. Rivaj’s attempt to shed light on the issue is something that can be appreciated.

The project, according to Dr. Rashid Hameed, will develop several applications, including Machine Translation (MT), Speech Recognition (SR), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), to improve access to language learning, facilitate cross-border communication and commerce, allow users to access online content, foster cross-cultural understanding, and help preserve language resources.

While providing more information about the project, Syeda Roshana Ali Naqvi, the program manager for research and development at the NLPD, revealed that the machine translation module employed computer techniques to automatically translate text from English to Urdu.

“This module will efficiently provide translations of all current official documents from English to Urdu, including policies, press releases, economic surveys, annual reports, long-term plans, newsletters, public notices, tenders, and advertisements,” she added.

“This technology will help digitize Urdu audio resources, such as parliamentary speeches and meeting minutes. Meanwhile, speech recognition technology could increase accessibility and inclusivity for those with hearing and speech impairments.” She further added.

In contrast, the OCR module will transform the printed text into editable digital text. In comparison to manual typing, this will significantly reduce the time and effort required to digitize previously printed records. The text will be searchable thanks to the OCR module, making it simpler to use and gain access to.
