How Canada’s Voters Turned on Justin Trudeau

How Canada’s Voters Turned on Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau, who was once a global icon of progressive ideals, is now the shadow of the leader who electrified the world stage in 2015. As Canada’s youngest prime minister in decades, Trudeau embodied hope, diversity, and modernity. Now, his political arc draws toward its end, with an uncertain verdict on his legacy.

Scandals and Broken Promises

Trudeau’s meteoric rise started with charismatic appeal, gender-balanced cabinets, and stances that did not waver against climate change, feminism, and refugee rights. The global darling has been called the next Barack Obama, with accolades from the media and the world at large. At home, his honeymoon was very short-lived.

Controversies surrounding the Trudeau government besieged the PMO in 2017. The ethical breach involved an undeclared luxury vacation. A blackface photo resurfacing was scandalous and depicted a detached leader, miles away from his ideals. Voters questioned if progressive politics was part of the authentic version or if he played this role just to appease the gallery.

The Pandemic and Political Polarisation

The pandemic further divided Canadians. While Trudeau’s lockdown measures and vaccine mandates targeted public health, they also started the Freedom Convoy, which brought to the spotlight deep divisions within the country. Soaring inflation combined with a housing crisis dug into his once-solid footing.

Add personal life to the list: His 18-year marriage became fodder for political adversaries during his 2023 separation from his wife. It embodied instability at a time when Canada yearned for steady leadership.

A Changing Political Landscape

The political landscape has changed, and dramatically. The emergence of Donald Trump in the United States and the right turn by Canada itself indicate an increasing disinterest in the progressive policies of Trudeau. All of this is reflected by mocking remarks from Trump where he calls Canada “the 51st state” and labels Trudeau a mere “governor”.

Now, Trudeau is confronting a grim reality. With his Liberal Party lagging by 25 points behind the Conservatives, he risks crushing defeat in the elections and increasing calls for him to resign, echoing the infamous “walk in the snow,” which led his father, Pierre Trudeau, to leave office as prime minister in 1984.

A Legacy in Question

While Trudeau’s own downfall may appear inevitable, his impact on the cultural and political fabric of Canada still resonates. Whether considered a transformative leader or the embodiment of unmet promise, his story is always one to caution against the promises of modern political branding and its limits.

Childhood Favourite CID Kicks Off with Season 2

Childhood Favourite CID kicks Off With Season 2

Everyone’s childhood favourite show, CID, has returned with its second season, and the premiere episode took fans down memory lane. While it wasn’t perfect, the nostalgia alone might just make you say, “Yeah, I enjoyed it!”

A Nostalgia-Filled Start

The episode kicked off with an intriguing storyline and a face-off between Abhijeet and Daya that had viewers hooked for a while. And let’s not forget 75-year-old Shivaji Satam! Seeing him step back into the role of ACP Pradyuman, as sharp and commanding as ever, was a delight for long-time fans. It was like seeing an old friend after years, still just as familiar.

Childhood Favourite CID kicks Off With Season 2
Childhood Favourite CID kicks Off With Season 2

The Same Old Charm, But the Same Old Flaws

Here’s the thing; nostalgia was the real star of the episode. The script? Too simple and predictable. The case-solving techniques? Hilarious and outdated. It felt like the show was still stuck in the 1990s, despite airing decades later. Fans, who were excited to watch their favourite detectives solve crimes again, were left feeling a bit let down.

Where It Missed the Mark

While the cinematic and production quality has clearly improved, the writing hasn’t kept up. The episode’s editing was choppy, the dialogues felt forced, and the storyline was flat. ACP Pradyuman solved the case in under 10 minutes, leaving the remaining 40 minutes feeling like filler. Viewers couldn’t help but laugh at how absurd some scenes were—definitely not the reaction you’d expect from a crime drama.

The Verdict: A Nostalgia Trip, Not Much Else

The first episode of CID Season 2 didn’t quite age like fine wine. It felt like a blast from the past, but not in the best way. Fans loved the chance to relive childhood memories with their favourite detectives, but they also hoped for a stronger, more evolved show.

Here’s to hoping the upcoming episodes bring more substance and make us root for Team CID all over again!

Fast-Moving Asteroid XN1 Approaching Earth at 23,729 km/h

Fast-Moving Asteroid XN1 Approaching Earth at 23,729 km/h

NASA estimates that asteroid XN1 flies at a velocity of 23 729 km/h and will fly past the Earth on December 24. The stretch of the asteroid is about 120Ft or 37 meters which when double the normal size of commercial aircraft. It will pass Earth at 7:5.57 AM PST as per the report by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

JPL has cited that 2024 XN1 is not a potentially hazardous asteroid as defined by NASA standards. According to NASA, asteroids are considered potentially hazardous if they exceed 150 meters in size and come within 4.6 million miles (7.4 million kilometres) from Earth. Due to its relatively small size and distance, XN1 shall safely move outside this risk zone. The asteroid has been described as one that is close but poses no threat.

On December 25, two additional asteroids, 2020 XY and 2020 YM1, are expected to pass near Earth. However, NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has confirmed that these asteroids do not pose any threat to the planet. The proximity of these objects offers an opportunity for skywatchers while Earth remains completely safe.

NASA continuously monitors near-Earth objects using advanced tracking systems. Observatories such as the NEOWISE telescope in space, along with ground-based systems like Pan-STARRS1 in Hawaii and the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, track thousands of these objects. These systems play a crucial role in ensuring Earth’s safety from potential asteroid threats.

How to Earn from YouTube? A Step-by-Step Guide

Source: Youtube

In 2024, YouTube remains the largest platform for creators to turn their passion into profit. Whether it is generating ad revenue or selling products, there are many opportunities for creators to monetise their content on YouTube. Here are the top strategies to turn your channel into a money-making venture.

1. Join the YouTube Partner Program

One can join the YouTube Partner Program in order to access monetisation features like ad revenue, YouTube Shopping, and Super Chats. Eligibility into this program requires one to have at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours within the past year or 10 million Shorts views within the last 90 days.

With YPP, you can earn money through ads, YouTube Premium revenue sharing, and even fan-funded options like Super Thanks or memberships. This is a great base for monetising your channel.

2. Enable Ads on Your Videos

Ad revenue is the most straightforward way to earn on YouTube. Once you’re in YPP, enable ads on your videos, and YouTube will display them pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll. However, keep in mind that YouTube retains 45% of standard ad revenue, making it essential to diversify your income streams.

3. Sell Merchandise and Products

Many creators utilise their following as a means to sell branded merchandise, such as T-shirts, mugs, or tote bags. Sites like YouTube Shopping allow for simple product display and sale on your channel itself. Combine this with a Shopify store for effortless integration.

4. Find Fan Funding Options

Platforms such as Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, and Ko-fi enable fans to support their favourite creators with one-time or recurring donations. YouTube provides built-in fan funding capabilities through features like Super Stickers, Super Chat, and channel memberships. These tools enable creators to offer exclusive perks such as custom emojis, badges, or members-only content.

5. Partner with Brands

Sponsorships are another money-making avenue. Brands pay creators to promote products or services to their audiences. To price your sponsorships, estimate a flat fee per view and adjust for your niche’s profitability. Always partner with brands that align with your values to maintain audience trust.

7. License Viral Content

If you create a viral video, licensing it to media outlets can generate significant revenue. Marketplaces like Jukin Licensing make it easy to connect with buyers interested in viral content.

Diversify and Thrive

The key to success on YouTube in 2025 is diversification. By combining multiple revenue streams—ads, merchandise, sponsorships, and more—you can maximise earnings while maintaining creative freedom. With dedication and strategy, your YouTube channel can be both a passion project and a profitable career.

The central bank emphasized that a robust payment system provides safe, efficient, and reliable options for transferring funds, purchasing goods, and settling payments, which are essential for any country’s economy.

Raast, Pakistan’s instant payment solution, has processed 848 million transactions worth Rs19 trillion since its inception in 2022. “Not Worth the Risk”: A Tale of Survival in the Mediterranean Sea

"Not Worth the Risk": A Tale of Survival in the Mediterranean Sea

Hassan Ali, a 23-year-old migrant from Pakistan’s Punjab province, tells a story of how he nearly drowned in the Mediterranean Sea only holding a rope for dear life. He said, “I held onto it with my life,” referring to his rescue by a merchant navy ship off the island of Crete in Greece.

Hassan’s parents mortgaged their land and gold jewellery and arranged a half million five lakh rupees seventy-one thousand dollars with a smuggler to take them to Europe. However, after weeks of detention in a small enclosed space in Libya, he was put on a cramped wooden ship. ”There is no going back,” this is what he was told. “Either go forward or die.” As they sailed through stormy waters, the boat’s engine malfunctioned and they flipped over after 40 anxious hours on the sea.

Despite the ordeal, Hassan survived while many others drowned. Pakistani authorities reported at least five deaths, while 47 nationals were rescued. The tragedy highlights the perils faced by thousands of migrants. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 180,000 people attempted the dangerous sea route to Europe this year, with nearly 3,100 Pakistani migrants arriving in Greece and Italy.

Now living in a refugee camp near Athens, Hassan urges others not to follow his path. “After what we have experienced, I only implore people to never take this route. It is not worth the risk.” For those like Hassan, the dream of dignity in a foreign land often comes at an unimaginable cost.

Omore and Walls Hit with Rs75m Fine for ‘Misleading’ Advertising

Omore and Walls Hit with Rs75m Fine for 'Misleading' Advertising

The Competition Commission of Pakistan CCP at FMC has inflicted a total penalty of Rs170 million on manufacturers and distributors of Walls and Omore products for “misleading consumers” that they were “selling frozen desserts” when they were “actually selling ice cream.”

Some of these companies are Unilever Pakistan which produces the “Walls” and Friesland Campina Engro that produces “Omore”. As per the standard of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), an ice cream is the food product prepared from the dairy product, which includes milk & cream. On the other hand, “frozen desserts” are produced using dairy products together with vegetable oils. Being commercial manufactured brands, they are manufactured with the ingredients of the frozen dessert category and therefore, to market them as an ice-cream is a violation.

Read more: Scream For Ice Cream: Lahore’s Best Spots

The CCP’s action stems from a complaint filed by M/s Pakistan Fruit Juice Company (Private) Limited, the makers of “Hico” ice cream, which alleged that the two companies had misrepresented their frozen desserts as ice cream through extensive advertising campaigns on television and social media. The complaint highlighted that such marketing misled consumers, distorting the understanding of what constitutes true ice cream.

Following a formal inquiry, the CCP issued show-cause notices to the two companies. During investigation, the Commission referred to standards outlined by the PSQCA. The distinctions were emphasised in the ruling to clarify that the products marketed as “ice cream” by the defendants did not meet the necessary criteria under the regulations.

Besides the penalties pertaining to misleading labels, the CCP also fined Unilever Pakistan Rs. 20 million for false and misleading advertisements and representations on the nutritional values of its frozen desserts and for promoting them as health-ier than dairy based ice-cream. Thus a practice was identified that the act found to be violating Section 10(2)(c) of the Competition Act leading to the additional fine.

CCP’s decision also cited legal actions by the respective bodies of food regulation in USA, Australia and India wherein such misbranding have attracted penalties for the so-called frozen desserts with claims of being ice creams. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously prosecute companies for false and misleading advertising associated with frozen dessert products.

The CCP also ordered both companies to stop using the term ‘ice cream’ to advertise their frozen dessert products. The companies were told to take down the same misleading ads across all forms of media and digital platforms and post clear disclosure statements about what was in their products to avoid confusion among consumers. Pursuant to this order, actions that must be taken include a compliance report that has to be filed to the CCP within 30 days of the order.

The First Superman Trailer is Here and it’s a Whole Lot

Superman: Legacy

The trailer for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy finally dropped, and it brings a new bold vision to DC’s flagship superhero. It’s full of nods to Superman’s classic lore and fresh twists, which sets up what could be the most ambitious reboot of the DC cinematic universe yet.

At its core, the trailer revisits the familiar hallmarks of Clark Kent’s journey: the Kent farm, the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, and the ever-determined Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. But it’s not all nostalgia—Gunn also ventures into uncharted territory, bringing Krypto the Superdog to the big screen, a fan-favourite from the comics long overdue for their cinematic debut.

High-Stakes Drama and Poignant Moments

The trailer opens with a harrowing sequence: Superman, bloodied and vulnerable, lying in the Arctic snow. Krypto comes to his rescue, cementing their bond in a poignant moment. From there, the teaser balances emotional depth with high-octane action. Viewers are treated to glimpses of David Corenswet’s Superman grappling with his dual identity—an alien icon revered and reviled, as a crowd of Metropolis citizens boos him during one striking scene.

A Star-Studded Cast and Fresh Faces

Adding to this mystery are key supporting actor appearances. Nicholas Hoult takes on Lex Luthor, and Pruitt Taylor Vince plays Jonathan Kent. The cast continues to the outer edges of the mythos of Superman, which includes Edi Gathegi; Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced; Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion; Green Lantern—or at least someone wearing Green Lantern’s helmet, covered in a ridiculous wig.

Gunn’s vision promises more than just another origin story. The trailer hints at a broader narrative that will tackle themes of humanity, belonging, and heroism under fire. While previous DC efforts often leaned into darker, grittier tones, Gunn appears to aim for a balance—injecting heartfelt moments and lighthearted elements alongside the action.

A New Direction for the DC Universe

Fans have speculated how all these characters and plot threads will fit into one movie without feeling rushed. Gunn’s reputation for blending ensemble casts and sharp storytelling, honed in Guardians of the Galaxy, suggests he’s up to the challenge.

Superman: Legacy will be coming out on July 11, 2025. It is so much more than a reboot. It is a new promise for a renewed universe, with hope, resilience, and the enduring legacy of the Man of Steel. From this trailer, audiences have much to look forward to for the movie.

Almost Half Of Taxpayers Don’t See their Taxes Being Spent for the Public Good

Public Trust in Tax 2024: Latin America and Beyond – research by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), IFAC (International Federation of Accountants)

Lahore, 20 December, 2024: Across the globe taxpayers support the idea of a fiscal contract – citizens agreeing to pay tax in exchange for services – but a global poll suggests that only a third see the deal working in practice.

Globally the survey found that 52% of respondents agree that taxes are a contribution to the community rather than a cost (25% disagree, rest neutral), but only 33% agree that tax revenues in their country are spent for the public good (46% disagreeing, rest neutral). In addition, 32% agree that public services and infrastructure are a fair return for the taxes they pay (50% disagree, rest neutral).

But the survey found that Latin American countries are consistently less positive than the regional averages for the sample countries in Africa and Asia. The findings are consistent with previous G20 survey results, where Mexico, Argentina and Brazil typically return lower trust and confidence scores than average.

Public Trust in Tax 2024: Latin America and Beyond – research by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), IFAC (International Federation of Accountants) and joined for the first time by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) – surveyed some of the largest countries by population in different regions of the world, including a deep dive focus on Latin America, encompassing different cultures and economies. The 2024 survey marks the most significant expansion of the work to date, both in terms of questions asked and the countries covered.

The focus on Latin America highlighted a weaker support for the fiscal contract in the region, with only 47% agreeing taxes are a contribution, and just 25% agreeing public services and infrastructure are a fair return for the taxes they pay. Respondents in Latin America were also less likely to see tax primarily as a legal issue. While 56% of those in Africa and 52% in Asia see tax mainly as a matter of laws and regulation, only 39% of respondents in Latin America did – 45% saw tax as an equal blend of both laws and morals, and 16% as mainly an issue of morals and fairness.

Helen Brand OBE, chief executive of ACCA said: ‘Trust in tax systems is crucial for sustainable development and prosperity, and the findings of this survey highlight the challenges that many governments across the world face in building it. We look forward to using this important work to engage with policymakers, tax authorities and civil society to drive evidence-based policy initiatives to build effective and trusted tax systems.’

Commenting on the finding that tax accountants are the most trusted source of information on tax, and politicians the least, Lee White, CEO of IFAC, said ‘Consumer and investor protection is the foundation for economic prosperity, which aligns with building trust in the tax ecosystem. As the survey confirms, and in line with previous editions, professional tax accountants are the most trusted source of tax information globally. This trust places an enormous responsibility on our profession to act with integrity, to bridge the gap between governments and taxpayers, and to uphold the highest standards of ethics.’

Manal Corwin, Director of the OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration said: ‘We are pleased to join with ACCA and IFAC on this key research. The findings in this report highlight that support for the fiscal contract remains strong in theory, but it’s not being delivered in practice for many. We can use these findings to identify how to rebuild trust in both the theory and practice of tax across the globe.’

Join ACCA, IFAC and the OECD on 28th January 2025 for the launch event of the Public Trust in Tax 2024 survey, during which the key findings of the report will be presented. The 90-minute webinar will also explore the correlations between characteristics and attitudes towards tax issues, and foster dialogue among policymakers, tax authorities, academics, international organisations, and the accountancy profession to promote evidence-based reforms in taxation and trust-building initiatives globally. Nike to Refocus on Sports Like Basketball and Running

Nike to Refocus on Sports Like Basketball and Running

Nike’s new CEO Elliott Hill warned of a long road to sales recovery for the sportswear giant. In his first public address as CEO, Hill stated that Nike had “lost its obsession with sport” and vowed to refocus on sports like basketball and running. The company aims to move away from heavy discounting and streetwear trends that have shifted its identity, instead prioritising premium pricing and full-price sales through its website and app.

Hill’s strategy is a return to Nike’s roots, which John Nagle of Kavar Capital Partners described as “taking it back to what worked.” By redirecting attention to sports and addressing strained relations with retailers like Foot Locker, Nike hopes to strengthen its core business. However, analysts like Barclays’ Adrienne Yih cautioned that the next four quarters could bring significant margin pressure and EPS reductions as the company navigates this transition.

Nike’s market share has been challenged in recent years by rivals like Roger Federer-backed On and Deckers’ Hoka, both of which have gained traction with innovative designs. Hill highlighted the need for more innovation and less reliance on promotions, a strategy that has weighed on Nike’s profitability. Shares of Nike, which have lost half their value over the past three years, dipped 4% in premarket trading following the muted sales forecast.

Despite the challenges, portfolio managers like Eric Clark of the Rational Dynamic Brands fund remain optimistic about Hill’s leadership, describing him as “a sailor who knows how to drive the ship.” As Nike begins this multi-year recovery, the focus on sports and premium pricing could signal a new chapter for the brand.

Leaks Suggest Horizontal Camera for iPhone 17 Pro Max

iPhone 17 Pro Max design leaked; latest details!

Excitement is building as speculation around the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series continues to grow, with several conflicting leaks emerging online. According to a report from China via Leakster InstantDigital, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to retain its signature triangular camera setup. Earlier rumours of a Pixel-like camera visor appear to have been dismissed. Meanwhile, leaked images of the iPhone 17 Pro Max suggest a potential shift to a horizontal camera layout, marking a notable design change for Apple’s larger flagship model.

Despite these differences, reports indicate that neither device will include a prominent camera island. This detail suggests a sleeker overall design for the iPhone 17 Pro series. Last month, rumours hinted at a return to aluminium frames, but more recent information suggests Apple may stick with titanium. Titanium offers durability and a premium feel, which would continue to define Apple’s flagship line.

The iPhone 17 Pro design rumours reflect Apple’s possible focus on refining aesthetics while maintaining familiar features. InstantDigital’s claims highlight that the triangular camera setup is likely to stay for the Pro variant. It will ensure continuity for users that are familiar with the layout. For the Pro Max, however, the horizontal camera alignment could provide a fresh look, especially for those drawn to larger devices.

As with any early leaks, these details should be taken cautiously. Apple has not confirmed any of the reported changes or features. Official details are likely to surface closer to the iPhone 17 Pro launch.

Pakistan Developing Missiles Capable of Reaching the US

Pakistan Missile Program

The revelation that Pakistan is developing long-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States has raised significant concerns in Washington. A senior US official recently disclosed these developments, signalling a potential shift in Pakistan’s missile plans. This news not only highlights the deteriorating relationship between the two countries but also questions the strategic intent behind Pakistan’s missile program.

Concerns Over Pakistan’s Missile Program

Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer revealed that Pakistan has been advancing its missile technology. He mentioned a focus on long-range ballistic systems and larger rocket engines. These advancements could eventually enable Pakistan to strike targets far beyond South Asia, including the US. This news has struck many. Currently, very few nuclear-armed nations possess such capabilities. Those who do are typically adversarial powers like Russia, China, and North Korea.

Jon Finer emphasised that Pakistan’s actions are seen as an ‘emerging threat’ to the United States. His comments came during a speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He described the programme as moving beyond its traditional deterrence against India. Historically, Pakistan has maintained that its nuclear weapons and missile programs aim to counter Indian aggression and ensure regional stability. However, the recent developments suggest a broader and more ambitious trajectory. So far, no one can conclude what has prompted these developments or funded them.

Implications and US Response

The US has imposed new sanctions on Pakistan’s missile program, including measures targeting the state-run defence agency managing the program. US officials have also expressed frustration over Pakistan’s refusal to address concerns about its growing missile capabilities. Washington has repeatedly raised these issues with Islamabad, but so far, the responses have been dismissive.

The US believes Pakistan’s growing missile capabilities could pose a direct threat in the next decade. This has prompted questions about why Pakistan, a longtime partner in counter-terrorism and security, would pursue a program that could potentially target the US. Additionally, Pakistan’s close ties with China, another adversary with advanced ballistic missile technology, further complicate the situation.

A Strained Partnership Between Pakistan And US

The US-Pakistan relationship has had its share of ups and downs. During the Cold War, Pakistan was a key ally against Soviet forces in Afghanistan. In more recent years, it played an important role in counter-terrorism efforts post-9/11. However, disagreements over Pakistan’s nuclear program, its support for the Taliban, and its military coups have strained ties.

Finer’s remarks reflect growing US impatience with Pakistan. To phrase it casually, they are freaking out right now! Experts see this public acknowledgement as a significant shift in the US approach, signalling a tougher stance on proliferation concerns.

Pakistan’s development of long-range missiles marks a turning point in its strategic goals. While Pakistan insists these advancements are for defensive purposes, the US views them as a potential emerging threat. This issue underscores the need for open dialogue and mutual understanding to prevent further deterioration of relations and ensure global stability. As tensions rise, the international community will closely watch how both nations navigate this challenge.

Chinese Astronauts Set Record with 9-Hour Spacewalk

Chinese space programme

Two Chinese astronauts have made history by completing the longest spacewalk ever recorded, spending nine hours outside their country’s Tiangong Space Station. This mind-blowing achievement highlights China’s growing ambitions in space exploration and its commitment to becoming a leading space power.

Chinese Astronauts Take Over Space

Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, astronauts on the Shenzhou-19 mission, conducted their first spacewalk, also known as an Extravehicular Activity (EVA). Their nine-hour venture surpassed the previous record of eight hours and 56 minutes set by American astronauts in 2001. During the spacewalk, they installed protective equipment to shield the station from space debris and inspected its exterior. Despite the dangerous nature of spacewalks, the astronauts successfully completed their tasks, ensuring the station’s continued functionality.

Song Lingdong shared his thoughts after the historic walk, saying, “While admiring the gorgeous views in space, we also had a deep feeling of the weight and greatness of the manned space endeavour.” His words were filled with the pride and determination driving China’s ambitious space program.

The astronauts were not alone in their efforts. A third crew member, Wang Haoze, stayed inside the station to assist her colleagues during the spacewalk. The team is on a six-month mission to maintain and expand the Tiangong Space Station. They conduct scientific experiments and prepare for future milestones, including sending Chinese astronauts to the moon.

China’s Growing Space Ambitions

The historic spacewalk is another step forward for China’s evolving space program. The Tiangong Space Station represents a critical milestone for the nation, showcasing its ability to sustain long-term human missions in orbit. Over the years, China has made steady progress in space exploration, beginning with its first spacewalk in 2008, which lasted just 19 minutes.

Ukraine Uses 2 Million Hours of Drone Data to Train AI for War

Ukraine Uses 2 Million Hours of Drone Data to Train AI for War

Ukraine is leveraging a vast archive of drone footage to enhance its military capabilities using artificial intelligence (AI). Since 2022, the OCHI system has centralised data from over 15,000 drone crews, collecting an incredible 2 million hours of battlefield video. Oleksandr Dmitriev, OCHI’s founder, described this footage as “food for the AI.”  He highlighted the role of training systems capable of revolutionising warfare. “If you want to teach an AI, you give it 2 million hours (of video), it will become something supernatural,” Dmitriev stated.

The archive’s primary function is to provide military commanders with real-time battlefield visuals from multiple drones on a single screen. However, its long-term potential lies in training AI systems to improve combat tactics, identify targets, and assess weapon effectiveness. With 5–6 terabytes of footage being added daily, this data trove enables AI to learn how to differentiate between battlefield elements like roads, natural obstacles, and ambushes. As Samuel Bendett from the Center for a New American Security explained, “Humans can do this intuitively, but machines cannot, and they have to be trained.”

In addition to OCHI, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has deployed the Avengers system. This will integrate AI with drone and CCTV feeds to enhance surveillance. Avengers reportedly identifies around 12,000 Russian equipment pieces weekly, demonstrating the potential of AI in modern warfare. Autonomous drones and exploratory efforts in AI-driven drone swarms further illustrate Ukraine’s commitment to advancing its defence technologies.

While Ukraine refines its AI strategies, Russia also continues to develop AI-driven military capabilities, including its Lancet strike drones. As the conflict evolves, it becomes evident that AI and data driving will play an increasingly pivotal role in the future of warfare.

Google Faces Scrutiny over Return to Digital Fingerprinting for Ads

Google Faces Scrutiny Over Return to Digital Fingerprinting for Ads

Google made a comeback into digital fingerprinting in its advertising plan and this move brought criticism. The technology gathers its device details like IP addresses, the user agents and the web activities of the users for multi-device tracking. Advertisers will be permitted to use the capabilities of fingerprinting on smart and gaming consoles starting February 16th, 2025. This has sparked privacy issues since fingerprinting cannot be managed or erased like cookies.

Google claims the technology enables businesses to manage data securely while respecting users’ privacy. According to the company, privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) have evolved to balance ad efficiency and privacy expectations. It also highlights the shift to streaming platforms and connected TVs as a reason for adopting fingerprinting, stating that advertisers need tools to target users across fragmented platforms.

Criticism from privacy advocates and regulators has been swift. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) expressed concern about the lack of user control over fingerprinting. Stephen Almond from the ICO stated, “Fingerprinting involves collecting device information that cannot be easily wiped by users, making it harder for individuals to block or clear.” Regulators have warned that fingerprinting must comply with privacy laws and be deployed transparently.

This change comes as Google faces broader regulatory challenges, including potential DOJ mandates to alter its advertising operations. The ICO has labelled fingerprinting a “u-turn” from Google’s previous stance on privacy and pledged to monitor its implementation closely. While Google argues that this method addresses the evolving internet landscape, critics fear it undermines user privacy and control.
