Rupee Depreciates 278 per USD in Interbank Exchange

Rupee Depreciates 278 per USD in Interbank Exchange

Due to the increased demand for dollars for import payments, the Pakistani rupee depreciated to 279.04 against the US dollar in the interbank market. On Friday the rupee had closed at 278.95. In the open market, the currency also weakened, trading at 280.88 per dollar, slightly down from 280.79 in the previous session.

According to dealers, the local currency depreciation was driven by importers purchasing dollars to settle their payment obligations. However, the supply of dollars from exporters and remittances was inadequate to meet the rising demand from importers.

Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics shows that the country’s trade deficit expanded to $2.313 billion in January, marking an 18% rise compared to the same month last year. Imports grew by 10% year-on-year to $5.233 billion, while exports saw a 5% increase, reaching $2.92 billion. Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves continue to decline, with rising outflows from special convertible rupee accounts, including bonds and equities. These factors are putting pressure on the local currency.

Experts anticipate the rupee may depreciate to 280 this month and potentially weaken further to 281 by the end of the quarter. Despite the currency’s decline, they highlight that interbank liquidity remains stable. The central bank has efficiently managed foreign exchange reserves while meeting external debt obligations. The reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan fell by $76 million to $11.372 billion as of January 24.

Bitcoin Slides toward $90,000 after Trump Orders Tariffs

Source: Bleacher

On Sunday, the price of Bitcoin declined sharply following the unexpected announcement from President Donald Trump on imposing new tariffs on key trading partners. The world’s largest cryptocurrency dipped by 7% to $93,768.66. This caused losses for many in the crypto market.

Market Shaken by Fallout Over Tariffs

The selloff began late Saturday after Trump signed an executive order slapping a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% duty on Chinese goods. The move triggered immediate volatility across financial markets, with cryptocurrencies reacting as investors braced for economic uncertainty. The CoinDesk 20 index, which tracks the top 20 digital assets by market cap, plunged 19%, while Ether saw a dramatic 20% drop, marking its lowest level since November.

While Bitcoin is a hedge against inflation and economic instability, it is still a risky asset in the short term. This means that heightened uncertainty, particularly from geopolitical or economic disruptions, can send prices lower before long-term trends take hold.

Is Bitcoin’s Drop Temporary?

According to Jeff Park, head of alpha strategies at Bitwise Asset Management, in the short term, Bitcoin is going to suffer, however, it would finally gain if a protracted trade war emerged. “A protracted tariff conflict will undermine the U.S. dollar and drive investors toward alternative assets like Bitcoin,” he explained. That, however, may take a long time in coming as market participants begin to adjust to new economic realities.

Analysts are closely monitoring Bitcoin’s $90,000 support level. If this barrier is broken, some predict a further decline toward $80,000. Despite the current pullback, seasoned traders remain unfazed, noting that Bitcoin corrections of 30% are common even during strong bull markets.

A Broader Impact on Crypto

Outside of Bitcoin, tariffs have caused selling in the rest of the crypto space. Speculative assets continue to lose popularity as investors start to reassess the long-term implications of President Trump’s policies on trade. With around $1.6 trillion in annual trade between the U.S., Canada, Mexico and China, the entire global financial system is preparing itself for the blow.

As for now, Bitcoin’s price stays volatile, playing in between the risk-off short-term sentiment and the long-term expectations of a weaker dollar. All traders and investors are eagerly waiting to see whether the crypto giant will stabilise or experience another leg down.

Healing a Broken Heart: Gentle Ways to Cope with Loss

Healing a Broken Heart: Gentle Ways to Cope with Loss

Losing someone dear, whether to a breakup or death, is one of life’s most challenging experiences to cope with. The pain can feel overwhelming, and navigating through the waves of grief may seem impossible. One might think there is no hope at the end of the tunnel but trust me, there is. With time, support and self-compassion, healing is achievable. So here are some heartfelt tips to help mend your heart after such a profound loss.

Allow Yourself to Grieve

First and foremost, permit yourself to feel the pain. Grief manifests in various emotions—sadness, anger, confusion—and it’s essential to acknowledge each one. Bottling up feelings can hinder the healing process. Remember, it’s okay to cry, to reminisce, or even to feel numb at times. Everyone’s grief journey is unique; embrace yours without judgment.

Read More: Toxic Positivity And How It Can Ruin You

Seek Support from Others

I know you think that no one understands, that your pain is just yours to feel, but remember, connecting with others can provide immense comfort. Share your feelings with trusted friends or family members who can offer a listening ear. Consider joining a support group where you can meet others who understand your pain. Sometimes, simply voicing your thoughts can lighten the burden.

How to cope with loss
How to cope with loss

Establish a Routine to Cope with Loss

In times of loss, daily life can feel chaotic. Creating a routine can offer a sense of normalcy and control. Whether its as simple as a morning walk, reading before bed, or regular meals, these small structures can ground you and provide stability during turbulent times.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

You might want to skip meals and stay in bed all day but doing so won’t just harm you physically but also mentally. Your body and mind are deeply connected. Ensure you’re eating nutritious meals, engaging in regular physical activity and getting adequate sleep. Physical well-being can significantly influence your emotional health, aiding in the healing process. Taking care of your physical health might not seem like a priority at the time but it is more important than you think.

Express Your Emotions Creatively

Finding outlets to express your grief can be therapeutic. Journaling allows you to pour out your feelings on paper, providing clarity and release. Art, music, or other creative endeavours can also serve as mediums to process and convey emotions that words might not capture.

Honour their Memory to Cope with the Loss

No matter how you lose your loved one, keeping their memory alive can bring comfort at times. If you have lost someone to death, creating a scrapbook, planting a tree in their honour, or simply sharing stories about them with others can help process the loss. However, if the loss has been experienced differently- in case of a divorce or breakup- then it’s best to not relive the memories and allow yourself to move on. While revisiting memories might bring peace and calmness, it’s not always the answer to your sadness.

Be Patient with Yourself

Healing is not linear, and there will be good days and challenging ones. Allow yourself to experience setbacks without self-criticism. Understand that grief takes time and it’s essential to be gentle with yourself throughout the journey.

Consider Professional Help to Cope with Loss

If you find it difficult to cope or the grief feels overwhelming, seeking professional counselling can be beneficial. Therapists can provide strategies and support tailored to your needs, helping you navigate this challenging time.

In conclusion, while the loss of a loved one leaves an indelible mark, it’s possible to find a path forward. Embrace your emotions, lean on others, and prioritise self-care. With time and compassion, your heart will begin to heal, and you’ll discover ways to cherish the memories while moving toward a hopeful future.

How Sachin Tendulkar Inspired PCB to Make Babar Azam an Opener?

sachin-tendulkar-inspired-pcb-to-make-babar-azam-opener

Pakistan is set for a major shake-up at the top of the order in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With Saim Ayub ruled out due to injury, the selectors had a tough call to make. Their solution? Move Babar Azam to the opening slot.

It’s a bold decision, but what’s even more fascinating is the inspiration behind it—Sachin Tendulkar. The story goes back to 1994 when Tendulkar, after playing 69 ODIs in the middle order, was promoted to open against New Zealand.

The result? A stunning 82 off 49 balls. From that moment, he never looked back, eventually becoming one of the greatest openers in history.

Read More: Champions Trophy: Gautam Gambhir Downplays India-Pakistan Hype

Pakistan’s selectors saw a similar potential in Babar Azam. He has already opened in T20Is, so why not in ODIs? According to reports, they presented this example to Babar, who took his time before accepting the challenge.

Surprisingly, despite his legendary status in ODIs, Babar has only opened twice in this format—both times against England in 2015, scoring 62* and 4. Now, nearly a decade later, he gets another shot at the role, and this time, it could be permanent.

Read More: Wasim Akram Questions Pakistan’s Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

With Babar Azam moving up, Pakistan needed reinforcements in the middle order. This led to the recall of Khushdil Shah, Faheem Ashraf, and Usman Khan. Saud Shakeel also stays as a backup option, while Imam-ul-Haq was left out.

It’s a gamble, but one that could pay off massively. If Babar finds his rhythm at the top, Pakistan’s batting unit could become a force to be reckoned with.

USAID Officials Put on Leave as Elon Musk Says Time for Agency to ‘Die’

USAID Officials Put on Leave as Elon Musk Says Time for Agency to ‘Die’

Elon Musk has called for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to be dismantled, branding it a “criminal organisation.” His comments came after two senior USAID security officials were put on leave for denying his representatives access to classified materials. Musk, who was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by President Donald Trump, expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “Time for it to die.”

Security Controversy Sparks Debate

Controversy arose when the agency’s head of security prohibited DOGE staff from entering restricted areas. John Voorhees and Deputy, Brian McGill stopped DOGE staff because they did not have requisite security clearances. The task force had entered, consequently raising fears over a breach in protocol. White House communications director Steven Cheung has brushed it all off by terming the reports “fake news.” A DOGE representative later admitted that, indeed, security clearances were acquired.

USAID’s Future in Question

Trump’s administration has already placed a freeze on most foreign aid, raising fears that USAID may face drastic cuts or even dissolution. The agency’s website temporarily went offline over the weekend and a simplified version reappeared under the Department of State’s domain, suggesting a possible merger. Democratic Senator Chris Coons criticised these moves, arguing that USAID employees are vital to America’s global leadership and national security.

Bipartisanship voiced concern at his deepening intervention in the affair of the government. The media reported that DOGE managed to gain entry to the federal payment system. According to these systems, the said payment network had information concerning millions of American citizens. This concerned Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as “The people elected Donald Trump to be President – not Elon Musk.”

Cuts in Assistance from Trump for South Africa

In a related move, Trump blocked all US assistance to South Africa, citing an issue over policies on land confiscation. This comes after the signing of the law by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa that allows seizing white-owned land without compensation in certain instances. The US assisted South Africa to the tune of nearly $440 million in 2023. Funding will stay frozen pending review, Trump says.

As authorities weigh in the future of USAID, there are many questions as to how the Trump administration and Musk’s DOGE initiative will reshape US foreign aid policies. If USAID is significantly downsized or dismantled, the global implications could be far-reaching.

Trump Warns of Tariffs on EU as Global Trade Tensions Rise

Trump Warns of Tariffs on EU as Global Trade Tensions Rise

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the European Union will soon face tariffs, adding to the growing trade disputes, following his recent tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. Trump said the move was necessary to address the trade deficit between the U.S. and Europe and urged European nations to buy more American cars and agricultural products.

His comments come after he imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. In response, Canada has announced a 25% tariff on U.S. products starting Tuesday, while Mexico is preparing to reveal its own countermeasures. The tariffs have already raised concerns about higher costs for American consumers and businesses, with the U.S. stock market and Asian shares showing signs of instability.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that while his country does not want to escalate the dispute, it will take steps to protect its economy. Canada is also pursuing legal action, arguing that the U.S. tariffs violate international trade rules. China, on the other hand, has threatened to file a complaint with the World Trade Organisation and has promised to take steps to safeguard its economy.

Despite growing criticism, Trump has defended his tariffs, insisting that they are necessary to correct what he sees as unfair trade practices. He acknowledged that they could cause short-term economic challenges but argued that they would ultimately benefit the U.S. economy.

With the European Union now also facing potential tariffs, global trade tensions continue to rise and markets remain on edge as countries prepare their responses.

Islamabad High Court Judges’ Transfer Sparks Protests

Islamabad High Court Judges’ Transfer Sparks Protests

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has released its duty roster for the week, adding three new judges who have been transferred from other high courts. The IHC now has thirteen judges, increasing the total to thirteen single benches and six division benches. The court has also issued a new seniority list of judges.

Justice Sarfraz Dogar has been assigned to reserve bench number two for puisne judges. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who previously was for bench two, will now lead bench three. In the list of single benches, Justice Sarfraz Dogar is ranked second, followed by Justice Mohsin in third place.

Barrister Jahangir Jadoon stated that Justice Sarfraz Dogar has replaced Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani as a senior puisne judge. However, he suggested this might only be temporary. If Chief Justice Aamer Farooq is promoted to the Supreme Court, Justice Sarfraz Dogar could become the next chief justice of the IHC. Justice Mohsin would regain his previous status as a senior puisne judge.

Ongoing Controversy

The transfer of the three judges has sparked controversy, with Islamabad’s major bar councils strongly opposing the move. The Islamabad Bar Council (IBC), the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) and the Islamabad District Bar Association (IDBA) have unanimously rejected the transfers. Lawyers have announced a strike and are boycotting court proceedings. They passed a resolution demanding that the notification of these transfers be withdrawn and urged a meeting on February 10.

Amid the ongoing protests, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik rejected claims that the government was interfering in judicial matters. He insisted that the government was committed to judicial reforms and that the recent transfers were not intended to influence the courts. He criticised political opponents for misrepresenting the situation and said the judicial reforms package aimed to improve the system.

Google to Rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in Maps

Google to Rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in Maps

Last week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on maps. While this shift could take months to fully implement, Google is already preparing for the change.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming name switch and how it will affect maps.

How Google Maps Will Handle the Change

Google has announced that it will update the names on Google Maps once the government makes the change official. The company explained this on social media, stating that its usual practice is to apply name updates once they are reflected in official government sources. For U.S. geographic features, this typically happens when the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated.

The tech giant also plans to use the name Mount McKinley instead of Denali to refer to the mountain in Alaska, following another renaming decision from Trump. However, Google clarified that users around the world will still see both names when applicable.

Google to Rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in Maps
Google to Rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in Maps

What’s in a Name? The Gulf of Mexico’s History

The Gulf of Mexico has carried its name for centuries, at least since the late 1600s. It refers to the large body of water bordered by the U.S. southern coast, stretching from Texas to Florida, and wrapping around Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

The Gulf spans about 615,000 square miles, making it the ninth-largest body of water in the world. Its coastline measures around 3,540 miles, with more than half of it bordering Mexico.

Who Decides on Geographic Name Changes?

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) is in charge of standardising geographic names across the federal government. The BGN’s role is to approve or reject name changes, ensuring consistency across government records.

However, name changes are only considered when there’s a compelling reason. The BGN specifically discourages changing names just to correct or re-establish historical usage.

This decision is mostly federal and states bordering the Gulf of Mexico or other countries aren’t required to follow the name change. That said, Florida has already embraced the new name.

Florida’s Adoption of the New Name

During a state of emergency declaration last Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis referred to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. He said, “Whereas an area of low pressure moving across the Gulf of America, interacting with Arctic air, will bring widespread impactful weather to North Florida beginning Tuesday.”

What’s Next?

While the official name change may take some time, Google is preparing to implement the updates in due course. The switch to the Gulf of America will affect federal records, maps and other geographic references.

It remains to be seen how other states and countries will handle the name change. Whether or not it sticks in popular use, will certainly be a subject of debate in the months ahead. For now, the Gulf of America is set to appear on maps—but only after it’s officially recognised by the government.

President Trump’s executive order has set in motion a historic change to the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Google is on track to update its maps in line with the government’s timeline. Though it will take time to adjust, this renaming marks a significant shift in how we identify one of the world’s most iconic bodies of water.

Champions Trophy: Gautam Gambhir Downplays India-Pakistan Hype

pakistan-defeating-india-an-upset-gautam-gambhir-champions-trophy-2025

The countdown to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has begun, and as always, the India-Pakistan clash is grabbing headlines. But for India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, it’s just another game in the bigger mission—winning the trophy.

Speaking at the annual BCCI awards, Gautam Gambhir made it clear that India isn’t heading to Dubai just to win one match.

“We don’t go to the Champions Trophy thinking that the 23rd is the most important game for us. I think five games, all the games are important,” said Gambhir.

Read More: Wasim Akram Questions Pakistan’s Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

“The mission to go to Dubai is to win the Champions Trophy, not only win one particular game. But yes, if that is one game in the middle of winning the Champions Trophy, we’re going to try and take it as seriously as possible.”

For fans, an India-Pakistan match is always high-stakes. The emotions, the history, the fierce rivalry—it all adds to the drama. But Gambhir wants his team to stay focused on the bigger picture. Winning a single match won’t mean much if they don’t lift the trophy.

The Champions Trophy is not like a regular World Cup. It’s short, intense, and leaves no room for slip-ups. Gambhir pointed out that every game is a do-or-die situation.

“Champions Trophy is a completely different challenge as compared to the 50-over World Cup because literally every game is a make-or-break, so you can’t stop anywhere in this tournament,” Gautam Gambhir noted.

“So hopefully we’re going to start off really well, because ultimately, if you want to go on and win the competition, you have to win five games.”

India kicks off their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 before facing Pakistan on February 23. Their final group-stage match will be against New Zealand on March 2. With only eight teams in the tournament, every match is a must-win.

But it was Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s wife, who made the biggest statement, revealing a barely-there, see-through slip dress under her coat, sending shockwaves through the crowd.

Wasim Akram Questions Pakistan’s Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan has announced its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but not everyone is happy with the selections. Former captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram has raised eyebrows over the inclusion of Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah, questioning their sudden return to the team.

Faheem & Khushdil—‘Out of the Blue’?

Speaking on the sidelines of the ILT20, Akram didn’t hold back. He pointed out Faheem’s poor stats, stating: “Faheem Ashraf is in the team. I wish him all the best. [He is] a talented cricketer. But in the last 20 matches, his average bowling is 100 and his average batting is 9. He came out of the blue and Khushdil also came out of the blue.”

That’s a harsh reality check! If you’re picking players for a major tournament, form and performance should be key factors. But with numbers like these, their selection does seem questionable.

Only One Specialist Spinner?

Akram also raised concerns about Pakistan taking just one specialist spinner, Abrar Ahmed, for a tournament where spin might play a crucial role.

“We are taking one spinner, a proper spinner. I think India has ordered 3 to 4 spinners in their squad. There is a reason behind that they have selected this. Anyway, the team has been selected. I wish Pakistan team all the best,” he added.

Spin has always been a game-changer in subcontinental conditions. If other teams are stacking up on spinners, is Pakistan taking a risk by relying on just one?

Fakhar Zaman’s Return – A Relief!

Amidst the questionable selections, there was some good news—Fakhar Zaman is back! Akram was visibly relieved about this decision.

“Fakhar Zaman has been picked, thank God he is back in the squad. [He is] one of the main players in world cricket in white ball,” he further stated.

With Saim Ayub out due to injury and Abdullah Shafique dropped for poor form, Pakistan’s opening pair is now a big question mark. Akram had an interesting suggestion—Babar Azam should open the innings.

“I would like to see [Mohammad] Rizwan as a middle order batter. And maybe tell Babar [Azam] to open. Babar’s technique is great. If Babar plays 50 overs, he will do 100 or 125, and with that the entire team’s batting will go. This is my opinion,” Wasim Akram said.

That could be a solid strategy! Babar’s technique is tailor-made for anchoring the innings, and opening the batting might give Pakistan the stability it needs at the top.

EU Warns of Retaliation Regarding Trump’s New Tariffs

EU Warns of Retaliation Regarding Trump's New Tariffs

US President Donald Trump has recently suggested new tariffs on the European Union, reigniting trade apprehensions with the 27-nation bloc.

At the White House, while speaking to reporters, Trump was asked whether he planned to initiate tariffs on the EU. “Do you want the truthful answer or the political answer?” he responded. “Absolutely.”

The Republican Leader, who consistently criticised the EU for unfair trade practices, reaffirmed his stance, stating, “The European Union has treated us so terribly.”

During his first tenure in 2018, Trump imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports, triggering a trade dispute. In retaliation, the EU placed duties on American goods, including whiskey and motorcycles.

EU to respond ‘Firmly’ to Trump’s new tariffs.

The European Union has indicated that it will react “firmly” if Washington introduces new tariffs.

A spokesperson for the commission told AFP that the EU “regrets the US decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China,” calling such measures “economically disruptive” and inflationary.

The spokesperson stated, “The EU would respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods.” He noted that the bloc had not yet received details of any specific actions targetting European products.

The commission emphasised the significance of a robust transatlantic trade partnership, highlighting it as “the largest in the world” and urged Washington to prioritise cooperation rather than confrontation.

European leaders are scheduled to gather in Brussels on Monday to review Trump’s latest statements and consider possible retaliatory actions.

Beyond trade conflicts, tensions between Trump and European allies have also risen due to his renewed interest in Greenland. The mineral-rich Arctic island, an autonomous Danish territory, has been a longstanding point of interest in Trump’s ambitions.
