Finally! Here’s Why Pakistan’s Internet Has Been Down

Source: Arab News
Recent internet disruptions in Pakistan have caused widespread frustration, with many users left wondering why their connectivity suddenly slowed or failed altogether. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has now provided some clarity on the issue, revealing that the disruption was due to a fault in a submarine cable, a critical component of the nation’s internet infrastructure.

Submarine Cable Fault Identified

During a briefing to the Standing Committee on Information Technology, PTA Chairman Hafiz Rahman explained that the fault occurred in one of the seven fiber optic cables that connect Pakistan to the global internet. This particular cable handles a substantial 7.5 terabits of data traffic, making the disruption particularly severe. The fault in the submarine cable, according to Rahman, has been isolated and is expected to be repaired by August 27, 2024.

Internet services across Pakistan face disruption for second consecutive day, no one knows why | Pakistan Today
Source: Pak Today

The disruption, however, was not global but specific to Pakistan’s cable system. As one of the country’s main conduits to the internet went down, users experienced significant slowdowns, particularly affecting those relying on high-speed connections for work, streaming, and other online activities.

VPN Usage Compounds the Issue

The issue was compounded by other factors, notably the widespread use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in the country. Minister of State for IT, Shaza Fatima, explained that the increased use of VPNs contributed to the network strain. As certain services became restricted, many users turned to VPNs to bypass these limitations, further straining the already compromised network. While VPNs are often used for legitimate privacy concerns, their mass usage during an infrastructure fault exacerbated the situation.

There has also been some discussion around the implementation of internet firewalls at Pakistan’s main internet gateways. These systems, designed to monitor and filter traffic, have been partially blamed for the slowed internet speeds. Although they are intended to block or control access to specific content, the firewalls also have the potential to reduce overall internet performance, particularly when the system is under stress, as was the case during the recent cable fault.

As repair efforts continue, many are hopeful that the situation will stabilize soon. However, the incident has highlighted the fragility of Pakistan’s internet infrastructure and the need for more resilient systems to prevent future disruptions. In the meantime, users are encouraged to be patient and avoid unnecessary strain on the network.

Jay Shah To Become ICC Chairman After Forcing Greg Barclay To Quit

jay-shah-icc-chairman-forcing-greg-barclay-to-quit

In a significant shift at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Jay Shah, the current secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to become the new chairman of the ICC.

This comes after current chairman Greg Barclay, reportedly under pressure from Shah, announced his intention to step down at the end of November. The news has sent ripples through the cricketing world, as Shah’s rise could herald substantial changes, particularly for Pakistan.

The Road to the ICC Chairmanship

Jay Shah’s ascent in the ICC hierarchy has been nothing short of meteoric. As the son of India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, he has wielded considerable influence in the cricketing world.

Currently heading the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee, Shah has become one of the most powerful figures in the ICC boardroom.

jay-shah-icc-chairman-forcing-greg-barclay-to-quit

The decision by Greg Barclay, a New Zealand-based attorney, to step down after four years as ICC chairman came during a video conference with ICC directors, where he revealed that Shah had informed him of his intention to replace him in November.

With support from cricketing giants like Australia and England, Shah is poised to take the reins of the ICC under a revised constitution that could extend his leadership for at least three years.

Read More: Mohsin Naqvi To Succeed Jay Shah As ACC President

What Does This Mean for Global Cricket?

Jay Shah’s potential leadership of the ICC could have far-reaching consequences, not just for the organization but also for its member countries.

His rise coincides with ongoing tensions between the ICC and TV broadcasters Star over a $3 billion dispute concerning media rights. Shah’s leadership could be crucial in navigating these troubled waters, especially given his role in the F&CA sub-committee.

However, the most immediate concern for many cricket fans, particularly in Pakistan, is the fate of the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in the country in February 2025.

India has yet to confirm its participation in the tournament, and with Shah at the helm of the ICC, there are growing fears that the tournament could be moved out of Pakistan.

This could be a significant setback for Pakistani cricket, which has worked hard to bring international cricket back to the country after years of isolation.

A New Era for the ICC?

As the cricketing world waits for Shah’s official appointment, the implications of his leadership are being closely watched. With a year left in his term as BCCI secretary, Shah’s move to the ICC could leave a significant void in Indian cricket administration.

However, his influence within the ICC could lead to a period of consolidation for the organization, especially in financial and commercial affairs. Shah’s leadership might also mean a more assertive stance from the ICC on various issues, including tournament venues and broadcasting rights.

His close ties with influential cricket boards like those of Australia and England suggest that his tenure could be marked by stronger alliances and perhaps, more significant decisions that could shape the future of international cricket.

Karachi Stars Mir Hamza, Abrar Ahmed Dropped: Is PCB Biased?

karachi-stars-mir-hamza-abrar-ahmed-dropped

Former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed has stirred up a heated debate by openly criticizing the exclusion of Karachi-based players Abrar Ahmed and Mir Hamza from the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

His comments have reignited concerns over potential bias in team selection, a topic that has long been a source of tension in Pakistan cricket.

Mir Hamza, Abrar Ahmed’s Omission Raises Eyebrows

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially announced the release of Abrar Ahmed and top-order batter Kamran Ghulam from the Test squad for the first match, instead assigning them to a four-day match between Pakistan Shaheens and Bangladesh A.

However, it was the omission of Mir Hamza that sparked a more significant outcry. Hamza, who many expected to be part of the playing XI, was dropped at the last minute. Instead, the team management opted for Mohammad Ali as the fourth pacer for the first Test against Bangladesh.

Tanvir Ahmed’s Fiery Response

Tanvir Ahmed didn’t hold back in expressing his frustration. He took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns, accusing the Pakistan team management of favoritism and bias against Karachi players.

His post in Urdu translated to, “Apologies first, Abrar Ahmed was dropped from the team, and now Mir Hamza has been removed too, just because they are from Karachi. Whenever a boy from Karachi starts making a place in the team, he is pushed out because some people can’t tolerate it.”

Tanvir’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate about fairness and transparency in team selection. He argued that whenever a talented cricketer from Karachi begins to establish himself in the national team, he is unjustly sidelined.

Shan Masood’s Defense

In response to the criticism, Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood defended the decision to drop Hamza. He emphasized that the choice to include Mohammad Ali was based on the conditions and what the team needed for the match.

“We believe Mohammad Ali is well-suited for this role. He hits the deck hard, can move the ball in the air with the seam, and has that extra pace. It’s not about one bowler being better than another, but rather about who fits the conditions best,” Masood explained.

A Broader Perspective

While Tanvir’s comments have highlighted perceived injustices, it’s worth noting that the current Pakistan playing XI does include three players from Karachi: captain Shan Masood, vice-captain Saud Shakeel, and opening batter Saim Ayub.

This fact complicates the narrative of complete exclusion and suggests that the situation might not be as clear-cut as it seems. The ongoing debate over the inclusion of Karachi players in the national team is not new.

It reflects broader issues within Pakistan cricket, where regional biases have often been suspected to influence selection decisions.

What Is Imam-ul-Haq’s Future In Test Cricket?

imam-ul-haq

Pakistan’s left-handed opening batter Imam-ul-Haq was notably dropped from the squad for the two-match home series against Bangladesh, leaving fans to wonder about the next chapter in his cricketing career.

The decision to leave Imam out has sparked plenty of conversation, especially with the rising stars like Saim Ayub and Mohammad Huraira stepping into the spotlight.

A New Face at the Top

Imam, who has been a consistent presence in Pakistan’s Test side since their tour of Australia in late 2023, found himself replaced by the young and promising Saim Ayub. The inclusion of Mohammad Huraira, another exciting prospect, only added to the speculation surrounding Imam’s future.

Pakistan’s Test captain, Shan Masood, finally addressed the situation during a pre-series press conference. When asked about the decision, Shan clarified that Imam-ul-Haq is still very much in the team’s plans, but he has been “rested” for the Bangladesh series.

Source: Cricinfo

“Imam-ul-Haq is part of the plan but not part of the squad,” Shan said, aiming to put to rest any concerns about the left-hander’s place in the team. “Imam-ul-Haq has been rested for the Bangladesh series.”

A Strategic Decision

The decision to rest Imam comes after a period of mixed performances. His recent outings in the Test arena were a bit of a roller-coaster. In his last two Test matches against Sri Lanka, Imam managed to score 57 runs, followed by 94 runs across the Perth and Melbourne Tests.

While these numbers aren’t terrible, they perhaps didn’t meet the expectations set for a player of his caliber. Shan Masood hinted that the decision was also influenced by a desire to give younger players a chance to shine.

“We initially felt that it was our ideal chance to check Muhammad Huraira—what he could offer the Pakistan team after doing so well in domestic cricket over the last three or four years,” Shan explained.

Imam-ul-Haq

The Road Ahead for Imam-ul-Haq

Imam-ul-Haq, who is 28 years old, has built a respectable Test career so far, with 1,568 runs in 24 matches at an average of 37.33, including three centuries and nine half-centuries.

His record speaks for itself, but the competition for spots in Pakistan’s top order is fierce, with young talents eager to make their mark on the international stage. For now, it seems that the PCB and team management are looking to strike a balance between experience and fresh talent.

While Imam is taking a break, the door is far from closed on his Test career. If anything, this could be the reset he needs to come back stronger, refreshed, and ready to reclaim his spot.

How To Protect Yourself From Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and skin rashes. Unfortunately, cases of the virus are being reported once again. Though it is usually mild, it can be serious, especially for children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Protecting yourself from monkeypox is important, and there are simple steps you can take to stay safe.

Read more: Why Monkey Pox Is Back As An Emergency

1. Avoiding Contact with Monkeypox Patients

monkeypox

First, avoid close contact with anyone who has symptoms of monkeypox. The virus spreads through direct contact with the skin, bodily fluids, or contaminated items like bedding and clothing. If someone around you has a rash or unusual skin lesions, it’s best to keep your distance.

2. Washing Your Hands Frequently

Next, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after touching shared surfaces or being in public places. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is also effective when soap isn’t available. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home, such as doorknobs and countertops, to reduce the risk of spreading germs.

3. Wearing a Mask In Crowds

If you live in an area where monkeypox cases have been reported, consider wearing a mask in crowded spaces. The virus can sometimes spread through respiratory droplets, so a mask adds an extra layer of protection.

4. Monkeypox Vaccination

Vaccination is another way to protect yourself. If you are at higher risk, such as being in close contact with an infected person or living in an area with an outbreak, speak to your healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.

Lastly, stay informed. Health authorities like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide regular updates about monkeypox and safety guidelines.

By following these simple precautions, you can reduce your risk of getting monkeypox and help protect your community. Staying cautious and informed is the best way to stay healthy.

Leena Ghani Takes Maria B to Task Over Alleged Design Plagiarism

leena exposes maria b

Pakistani fashion designer Maria B recently launched a new collection dedicated to Palestine, drawing praise and criticism. While some people appreciated her effort to use her platform for good, others accused her of exploiting the Palestinian cause for personal gain. Artist and activist Leena Ghani took to Instagram to criticize Maria B, pointing out that the designer was charging nearly Rs. 10,000 for outfits that were a clear copy of illustrations from the Palestine Quebec’s page.

The collection features designs inspired by the Palestinian keffiyeh and in the colors of the Palestinian flag. According to Maria B, the collection aims to raise awareness and support. Maria announced that all proceeds would go to Palestine. But has failed to mention how.

She also demanded transparency in Maria’s charity work. Leena publically urged her to tag the charities she supports, as many other brands do.

Media Reacts Leena Ghani’s Accusations At Maria B

Social media users had mixed reactions. Some praised Maria B for standing up for Palestine, with one follower writing, “She is the only designer who is speaking out for Palestine.” Many saw the collection as a bold statement from a prominent South Asian Muslim designer. Others, however, felt that the designer was using Palestine’s struggles as a marketing opportunity, with one critic stating, “Her horrible clothes aren’t going to Free Palestine. She needs to be transparent about which charity she will be sending the proceeds to.”

Despite these controversies, and Leena Ghani’s accusations, Maria B has retained support from her followers. This matter, however, highlights the ongoing parallel between activism and commercialism. Moreover, there is no way to define either.

Toyota Hybrid vs. Honda Hybrid – Which Offers Better Value?

Source: Medio 1

When it comes to choosing between Honda and Toyota hybrids, both automakers have earned a reputation for producing reliable, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles. But when it comes down to which brand makes the better hybrid, the answer is more nuanced than a simple comparison.

Honda Hybrids: Performance with a Punch

Honda’s hybrid lineup includes the Accord Hybrid, Insight, and CR-V Hybrid, each offering a unique blend of performance and efficiency. The Accord Hybrid, for example, is a midsize sedan that combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a robust 212 horsepower. This model is particularly praised for its smooth ride, responsive handling, and impressive fuel economy, achieving up to 48 mpg both in the city and on the highway.

The Honda Insight, a compact sedan, stands out with its sleek design and fuel efficiency. It features a 1.5-liter engine paired with an electric motor, offering a combined 151 horsepower. The Insight is a top performer in urban environments, where it can achieve up to 55 mpg.

The CR-V Hybrid, Honda’s compact SUV, is perfect for those needing more space without sacrificing fuel efficiency. It delivers a comfortable ride with a combined 212 horsepower and can achieve up to 40 mpg in city driving.

Toyota Hybrids: The Legacy of Efficiency

Toyota’s hybrid lineup is extensive, with models like the Prius, Aqua, and RAV4 Hybrid being particularly popular in markets like Pakistan. The Prius is perhaps the most iconic hybrid vehicle, known for its futuristic design and unparalleled fuel efficiency, with an estimated 54 mpg in the city. It offers a combined 121 horsepower, making it ideal for those prioritizing efficiency over performance.

The Toyota Aqua, a compact hybrid hatchback, has gained significant popularity in Pakistan for its affordability, practicality, and impressive fuel economy. The Aqua is powered by a 1.5-liter engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 99 horsepower. Despite its smaller engine, the Aqua delivers excellent fuel efficiency, achieving up to 37 km/l (approximately 87 mpg) in city driving, making it a top choice for urban commuters in Pakistan.

For those seeking a bit more space, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid offers a balance of power and efficiency, with a combined 196 horsepower and up to 37 mpg in city driving. The Corolla Cross Hybrid is a great option for those who need an SUV’s practicality with a compact footprint, making it ideal for urban driving without compromising on fuel efficiency.

Price and Affordability

When it comes to affordability, both brands offer competitive pricing. The Honda CR-V starts at Rs 1,070,000, making it the more expensive option among the two automakers. Toyota’s Prius is far ahead, starting at 1,850,0000. The pricing for their midsize hybrids, like the Toyota Aqua, is nearly identical to other small local manufactured cars, starting from Rs 4,500,000

Which is Better?

Deciding between a Honda or Toyota hybrid ultimately comes down to personal preference. If you’re looking for a hybrid that offers a bit more performance and a dynamic driving experience, Honda’s hybrids, like the Insight, might be the better choice. However, if fuel efficiency and a broader range of options are your priorities, Toyota’s lineup offers more diversity with models like the Prius and Aqua Hybrid.

Both brands excel in delivering quality hybrid vehicles, so it’s worth test-driving a few models to see which one aligns best with your driving style and needs.
