Faisal Kapadia recently penned an angry and eye-opening note against the recent developments in the Pakistani film industry and cinema operations. Many film producers recently held an emergency press conference at Arts Council to share their concerns over what happened on Eid. Keep reading to find out the latest on the biggest issue in our entertainment industry right now.
Four Pakistani films have been released this Eid at the box office. Some of the producers behind these films include Wajahat Rauf, Yasar Nawaz, and Adnan Siddique. They put their life savings into making films like Chakkar, Parde Mai Rehne Dou, Dum Mastam and Ghabrana Nahi Hai released on Eid for a successful response. The content is strong and so was the response from the audience.

However, here’s where the problem comes in, Dr. Strange was supposed to release on the same Eid weekend. This was problematic because the crowd prefers the imported film over the local one. The producers had, in fact, asked the cinemas to delay the release of Dr. Strange by a day and let them have one day only. However, cinemas did not agree and in reality, have been taking down Pakistani films since Dr. Strange was released.
The Emergency Council Meeting
This has reduced these producers to heaps of concern and worry because now the chances of meeting their investment seem grave. The producers have even said they are not looking to make a profit, they just want to cover their investment.

He details the back-breaking effort the producers put into their work, such as shooting throughout COVID-19 and being in debt just so people can have good content. My information had reached a person I had not thought my information would reach. I was just another case in the customers’ information circulating all over the internet.

But then, they added me to a WhatsApp group with more than two hundred members to promote their products. I had not consented to that. After that, I kept on getting messages from random people because now, more than two hundred people knew my contact number.
Not only does it make me vulnerable but it also can lead to frauds and scams. It is not uncommon to come across stories on social media where netizens share how they were scammed out of thousands of rupees because they ordered one expensive product and got a cheaper and a different product altogether in the package. “What chai? We get home from work and there is no gas,” A Karachiite lamented.
They further added, “In fact, we have to cook food beforehand and tea? Well, we make it and keep it in a thermos.”
It seems that the urban citizens are getting a taste of life in the countryside. Given the routine works differently for urban and rural, the schedule can surely not sit well with Karachiites most of whom are working remotely for foreign companies with different daily schedules. Their work begins in the evening and goes up until morning. Most urban citizens are night owls who like to cook up midnight snacks.

That is all gone because there is just no gas after 7 pm. Cooking is a separate issue but even the bathing schedule gets affected. With no heated water available, thanks to unoperational geysers, people can’t take baths at night anymore.
The gas schedule is, hence, directing Karachiites’ life schedule.
The problem exists for sure. Whomever we choose to blame, the problem will not magically disappear. That said, is it okay for one or two areas to be this afflicted? Is it okay for a proportion of the population to be affected by the gas shortage? Maybe, if the burden was shared amongst a number slightly less than 20 million population, the burden would not seem as great.

Instead of load shedding that encompasses most people’s teatime and dinner time of a few areas, the load could be shared equally. This way, instead of an 8 to 10-hour load shedding, the time would be reduced to 1 to 2 hours. The gas shortage might not be resolved but it can be managed effectively. Of course, this is until the people in power figure out a more permanent solution to the problem.
Maybe it is at the time they are trying to figure out a solution that they realized it is high time to shift to gas alternatives. But it will take time and until the solutions are in place, just maybe authorities could give us some attention.
