What Happened?

It was confirmed on Monday that Twitter was being sold to the billionaire Tesla owner entrepreneur Elon Musk in a deal valued at $44 billion. In essence, the social media app got sold for $44 billion and it may not have moved an inch on Musk’s hair.

What Was The Sale About?

The sale was a huge shift for the board. The board had been originally averse to letting Musk build power in the private social media network. Musk said in a joint statement on Twitter, “free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”.

Moreover, Twitter Board Chair, Bret Taylor said that the body “conducted a thoughtful and comprehensive process. This was done to assess Elon’s proposal with a deliberate focus on value, certainty, and financing.” Musk passed all tests!

How Bollywood Sparks Social Changes Through Speeches And Viral Videos

This is one of the last scenes of Bollywood movie Krantiveer.
The protagonist – a role played by Nana Patekar – is delivering an emotional and fiery speech before a large crowd gathered to witness his public execution. This speech does miracles. It shakes the crowd out of its slumber and kicks off a revolution of sorts.
When Krantiveer hit the cinemas in 1994, social media was non-existent and electronic media had not reached its prime. This was probably the reason why the director of the movie had to get the hero to deliver a speech from the gallows in order to awaken the people.

However, newspapers, recording devices, and projectors were still quite popular at that time and these were the tools that the director of the 1989 movie Main Azaad Hoon used to spark an uprising.

In this film, a newspaper reporter creates a fictitious character, Azaad, who allegedly aired his grievances over corruption and social inequalities in imaginary letters addressed to the journalist. She later convinces a homeless person to pass himself off as Azaad in front of people in order to give credence to her claims. That homeless person – Amitabh Bachchan – later starts identifying with the ideology of the imaginary Azaad and becomes a revolutionary figure.

This film also ends with an inspirational speech, which the protagonist had recorded before committing a sacrificial suicide. The video of this speech is projected on a giant screen in a stadium packed with people, who ultimately rise against the status quo while singing a revolutionary song. These two movies, however, are not the only Bollywood flicks, in which heroes rather conveniently manage to mobilize masses for a cause. In fact, after the rise of TV channels, Indian film directors found a more helpful tool.

In films like Nana Patekar’s Wajood (1998) and Shah Rukh Khan’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) the protagonists use the electronic media – the television – to mould public opinion and mobilize public support. Interestingly, one of the protagonists in Wajood and both the hero and heroine in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani are TV reporters. The latter movie also ends on a sort of regional uprising sparked by a video in which a death row convict exposes the crimes of some politicians and their cohorts.

In Anil Kapoor starrer Nayak (2001), the power of media rises to such a level that a TV anchor becomes the head of a state and that too as a result of a wager that he makes with a corrupt chief minister during a live television show.

In Ajay Devgan’s 2008 movie Halla Bol, the protagonist’s mentor shakes the conscience of the media in an interaction outside a hospital where the protagonist is fighting for his life. The media later embraces the protagonist’s cause and mobilizes the public in large numbers.

However, with the rise of social media, the process of rallying people around a cause got easier. In Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), we once again meet a journalist, Chand Nawab, who instead of relying on traditional TV channels, uploads a video on YouTube and the whole Pakistani nation falls in love with the protagonist in a matter of hours.
In Aamir Khan’s 2017 movie Secret Superstar, YouTube takes on the responsibility of turning an unknown girl into a superstar in a matter of days.

Television channels may have awakened some people and social media platforms may have created some superstars. However, these Bollywood movies want us to believe that a message – particularly the one delivered through traditional and social media – has the power and impact like a bullet. These films seemed to be based on the rather outdated Magic Bullet Theory which postulates that a message broadcast over airwaves acts like steroid injections and has the power to immediately convert people.

This idea – also called Hypodermic Needle Theory for obvious reasons – was largely discredited after the rise of scientific research in Mass Communication by the 1940s.
Later, research showed that mass media doesn’t influence in this simplistic manner and media messages can’t be directly injected into the brains of a passive audience. Every message has to go through a number of filters and a lot of factors determine its impact.
Ideas, ideologies, beliefs and attitudes of people don’t change in the blink of an eye. You can deliver any message through mass media but only a minority of people respond to it in a desired manner.

However, Indian filmmakers’ faith in the power of media and their belief in peoples’ willingness to accept every message doesn’t seem to have even slightly shaken.
They still think that last words from the gallows, investigative reports, sting operations and viral videos can bring about a social change; can rouse people from slumber; can spark a revolution.

That is probably the reason why India has the greatest number of TV channels in the world, one of the biggest film industries, and a huge presence on social media platforms.
However, this tendency of Indian directors to infuse media with this extraordinary power to rally people around a cause may have sprung from their concept of “Human”.
According to Muhammad Hasan Askari, the Man – Admi – is an imperfect and unruly being full of unexpected shortcomings and weaknesses.

On the other hand, the Human – Insan – is a concept created by the “rulers” to manage and control the Man and Askari includes artists, thinkers and philosophers in the category of rulers. These rulers desire that “the Man” may turn into “the Human” so that they could manage him with greater ease.

If we can borrow terms from Askari, we can say that the rulers of India feel threatened by the divergent and clashing views, contradictions and unpredictability of its 1.38 billion “Men”. They feel that these unmanageable “Men” can lead India to disintegration and desire to turn them into manageable “Humans” who could be converted to any view just with a single message. One can respect this wish but cannot stop wondering if Bollywood can keep India unified with films like Kashmir Files. Only time and the BJP can answer this question.

Honda Is All Set To Develop Three New Electric Vehicle Platforms By 2030

Honda Motor Co plans to build millions of electric vehicle (EV) by 2030 using three new dedicated platforms. According to a top executive at the Japanese automaker, one of them will be jointly developed with U.S. partner General Motors Co.

Honda Electric Vehicles 

According to Honda’s global head of Electrification Shinji Aoyama, the company is working on two new platforms. One for mini EVs that will be available in Japan by 2024. And another for full-sized EVs that will roll out in North America in 2026.

A third, previously announced platform for medium-sized cars is being developed in partnership with GM. Aoyama said that cars based on that platform will start rolling out in North America by 2027.

“We have not decided which plants or what will be produced. However, we are going to share the bill of the process for manufacturing. In order to enable the cars to be produced at either Honda or GM plants.” Aoyama told a publishing agency.

Honda Electric Vehicle Battery 

According to him, Honda also plans to start piloting a solid-state battery program in 2024 with an eye toward production toward the end of the decade.

Current lithium-ion EV batteries are subject to risks like bursting into flames, and a solid-state battery would be far more stable. It would also be able to store more electricity.

The company plans to build 2 million EVs by 2030, with 750,000 to 800,000 built-in North America (including the ones developed with GM).

Honda’s goal is to make EVs more affordable and while plenty of electric cars are in the works, few of them have price tags below $30,000.

Honda’s announcement forecasts a wave of potentially affordable EVs rolling into the market over the next five to eight years.

Daraz And UNDP Pakistan Champion SDG 6 By Providing Access To Clean Drinking Water To Over 86,000 Pakistanis

Karachi, 23 April 2022— The leading e-commerce platform in Pakistan, Daraz, has partnered with UNDP Pakistan to provide clean drinking water to an estimated 14,000 households in Rehri Goth, Karachi. This initiative is part of an urban resilience project spearheaded by UNDP Pakistan and IBA Karachi, which focuses on improving the resilience of migrants, displaced people, and host communities in Karachi’s informal settlements.

Pakistan has a scarcity of safe and affordable drinking water. According to a report by the World Health Organization, around 1,00,000 people – including 53,000 children less than 5 years old – passed away due to infections caused by impure water every year. This is why ensuring the availability and sustainable management of clean drinking water is one of the main Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6) championed by UNDP to achieve Agenda 2030.

Recognizing the dire need for change and understanding the task as its responsibility, Daraz decided to lend its hand to those in need. It aims to help by investing its resources to not only raise awareness on this issue which affects so many Pakistanis each day, but to also improve their access to clean water in a tangible way.

To this end, Daraz, under the IBA-UNDP urban resilience project, will cover the operation and maintenance of a Reverse Osmosis water plant in Rehri Goth. Initially established by aid agency Muslim Hands, the RO plant will provide safe drinking water to around 86,000 people in this 400-year-old fishing village on Karachi’s western coast.

Ammar Hassan, CMO, Daraz Pakistan, expressed his views on Daraz’s commitment to creating a positive impact in the daily lives of average Pakistanis, under their Drop of Life campaign: “Every month, 19 million Pakistanis visit Daraz to shop. By donating a designated portion from each order, Daraz aims to bring a change in the life of those people who do not have access to safe drinking water. The project is one of the many initiatives that reflect our vision to work for the betterment of society & uplift the living standard of communities by nurturing an echo system that strengthens sustainable development under the guidelines of the United Nations”.

Mr. Knut Ostby, Resident Representative, UNDP Pakistan, also shared his thoughts: “Safe and affordable drinking water is a basic human right. We welcome our partnership with Daraz, and look forward to serving the residents of Rehri Goth with a much-needed water sanitization project. WatchOS is the operating system that powers the Apple Watch. Apple is soon expected to announce WatchOS 9, the ninth major iteration of the software. However, like every Apple device, very few key details have leaked out ahead of the series launch.

Apple is expected to unveil WatchOS 9 at WWDC in June. A new report claims that it will include health and battery power features, plus a refresh of the Watch’s faces

WatchOS 9 Latest Features 

According to Bloomberg, WatchOS 9 will introduce a new low power mode. Currently, Apple Watch can go into a Power Reserve mode if a user chooses.  It automatically go into it when the battery declines to 10%. Power Reserve switches off all Apple Watch features except the time. However, Bloomberg claims that under watchOS 9, Low Power Mode will allow the watch to continue running certain apps.

It’s likely that the new model will resemble the Low Power feature on iPhone, where amongst many other things, it reduces the screen brightness.

Reportedly, WatchOS 9 may also extend the current health feature regarding atrial fibrillation. Although not certain for this release, when it does come, it will be used to monitor how often a person is in a state of atrial fibrillation over specific periods.

There won’t be the long-awaited blood pressure monitoring feature. However, the new report also claims that Apple will add more workout types to the Apple Watch. Including additional running metrics. Moreover, satellite connectivity for sending short text messages and SOS alerts to emergency services when away from cellular connectivity will also be a part of the update.

Toyota Has Opened Car Bookings Without Raising Its Prices

Toyota Indus Motor Company has resumed the bookings of its cars without increasing any prices. It’s good news for customers since multiple companies, including Kia Lucky Motors, Changan Master Motors, Proton Pakistan, and Prince DFSK, have recently hiked their prices.

Earlier this month, Toyota Pakistan suspended the bookings of all of its cars.

“The order intake for all Toyota models has been closed till further notice,” the company said.

Toyota IMC was not the only automaker to suspend bookings for its vehicles. Lucky Motor Corporation (LMCL) also suspended bookings for its best-selling Kia models, namely, Picanto, Sportage, and Stonic.

The company took to its official platforms to announce the news to its customers. Moreover, the company has resumed the bookings without any hike in prices. As opposed to other companies who raised their prices a few weeks ago.

The Rising Cost Of Toyota Vehicles 

During a quarterly performance review last month, CEO of Toyota IMC Ali Asghar Jamali said the automakers must increase prices due to global logistical challenges and rising freight costs.

Along with other experts, Jamali believed that the local currency depreciation had had the most devastating impact on the car industry. They speculate that a continuous nosedive of the Pakistani Rupee against the US Dollar will result in several price hikes this year.

Durex Gets Noticed In Marketing – Bags Two Effie Golds

Durex, part of Reckitt Pakistan’s arsenal, was the shining star at the Effie Awards that took place earlier this April. The brand, which essentially had no voice in the Pakistani market, brilliantly executed campaigns that secured them not one, but two gold awards at the Effie Awards in the most relevant categories of the marketing world today, Social Media and E-commerce marketing.

Breaking into the Pakistani market for Durex was nothing short of a challenging feat, the brand has not only never won before, but this is its first nomination at Effies PakistanBy creating campaigns that catered well to the sensibilities of the market while being completely aware of the sensitivity of the matter, Durex managed to not only create successful campaigns but also create a voice of its own, one that consumers could understand.

The Durex campaign named ‘No Measure to Your Pleasure’ focused on three main touch points; communicating the extended pleasure variant, focusing on discreet packaging and associating witty humour, The variant chosen was ‘Extended Pleasure’ to shift mindsets away from using the product purely for contraceptive purposes. The campaign managed to increase sales through a quicked-witted DVC and subsequent digital posts that showed impressive conversions to Durex’s eCommerce site.

Furthermore, the brand also tapped into another problem the Pakistani market was facing, which was a lack of discretion.  They recognized that this issue made customers apprehensive to order online, and they found a way around this by offering unmarked packing with quick delivery to ensure discretion for their customers. The combination of both legs of the campaign managed to increase overall eCommerce sales by a whopping 259% and Extended Pleasure variant growth by 95%!

The campaign ‘Playsafe’, won in the Social Media category for its clever posts. The brand worldwide is known for its comical take on a serious issue, and the team in Pakistan did not hold back. Playing upon current affairs and relevant news, Durex has posted a myriad of posts that will leave you laughing-out-loud, yet informed. The team noticed that the most effective way for potential customers to engage with their brand was via social media likes, comments, and shares. They also linked their eCommerce site to their digital channels resulting in a 200% increase in eCommerce sales and a 50% increase in total sales!

In tandem with these on-going campaigns, Durex also introduced its first brand ambassador, Zahid Ahmed, and used his presence to launch a sex-ed website to help educate the local market, which has now become one of the fastest-growing websites in the country. The brand recognized the gap in learning and information available to their clientele and created a solution that preceded the actual sale of the product. By educating the market, they were able to highlight safe-sex practices, answer frequently-asked-questions and emphasize the usage of their products with those responses. Creative ideas and thinking as such is what has lead Durex to be a leader in its category and we can’t wait to see what else the brand comes up with!
