Salaam Takaful Extends Parametric Based Crop Takaful Coverage

Salaam Takaful Limited, the largest general takaful operator and the first Islamic Insurtech in Pakistan has built a reputation for introducing new and innovative products to the market. Besides offering all the regular general takaful coverages like motor, health, travel, fire, marine, and all other usual offerings, they are committed to fill gaps with innovative products such as medical malpractice takaful, loss of employment takaful, livestock takaful, and parametric based crop takaful, to name a few.

Parametric crop takaful is the newest addition to its portfolio. Crop farmers, being the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, play a crucial role in the ecosystem, and are quite prone to losses due to climate change, natural calamities and pest attacks. Salaam Takaful has picked up on their issues and has devised a weather index based solution on parametric basis backed with satellite technology and advisory service which enables them to serve farmers in record time.

Parametric crop takaful works on satellite and weather tracking technology and in the event a parameter such as excess rainfall (or absence of it) gets triggered, claim payouts are also triggered automatically to the farmers. In this way, a farmer is not required to file the claim and go through the hefty process to get the benefit. Moreover, multiple perils can be parameterized and indexed using this technology and it is highly customizable hence enabling farmers to be more resilient to climate change.

Salaam Takaful has partnered with WaterSprint Ltd. to reach a bigger fraternity of farmers and to enhance the ambit of services being provided to them. Salaam Takaful and WaterSprint have jointly developed a comprehensive app to facilitate farmers on multiple fronts.

As part of its regulatory sandbox initiative to test Parametric Takaful, Salaam Takaful has initiated parametric crop takaful coverage to 61 farmers in District Rahim Yar Khan. They have collaborated with REEDS (Rural Education & Economic Development Society) Pakistan to implement this plan for the benefit of farmers. This initiative was very well received by farmers who appreciated Salaam Takaful’s step to come up with such innovative ideas and products.

A ‘coverage certificates distribution’ ceremony was held in Rahim Yar Khan. On this occasion, Mr. Umair Ismail from Salaam Takaful Limited, Mr. Naveed Alam from WaterSprint Ltd. and Mr. Shahid Saleem from REEDS Pakistan, pledged to further strengthen this partnership and work together for the betterment of farmers.

Nike’s New Ad Turns Out To Be An Epic Fail – Here’s Why

Nike has been responsible for some of the most memorable ads of the last century, across everything from print to video. But even the most advertising-savvy brands can get it wrong sometimes. To prove that marketing teams shouldn’t always live by the ‘just do it’ mantra, here’s a rare blunder from the company.

Nike’s Latest Tweet

In a series of events, Nike published a couple of tweets as part of a marketing campaign for retiring basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski that left social media users confused.

The first was a tweet by Nike Basketball’s verified account that says “You can’t spell championship without K.”

A second was a video ad tweeted by Nike that showed a string of words: “honor, respect, brotherhood, gold, Cameron, crazies, Durham, family,” which it says “you can’t spell without K.”

Retiring coach Mike Krzyzewski’s career ended after Duke lost to North Carolina in the Final Four of NCAA’s “March Madness.”

According to former sportswriter Jeff Bartl, Nike’s marketing team had about 9 months to plan a Coach K retirement campaign, and it landed on, “Let’s do like a bunch of words without a K and be like, ya need a K to spell ’em and stuff. Get it?!”

Twitter Reacts To Nike

Unsurprisingly, the ad is getting roasted online. The execution was off, though, and it opened the door for plenty of jokes on social media.

“Someone isn’t going to win the spelling bee any time soon,” one user comments on Instagram,

“This is unironically ironically funny”. another wrote.

Reporter Daniel Friedman added: “Literally none of these words have the letter K. The most hilarious part about this is that the word ‘basketball’ was just sitting there for the taking (and has a K). Still Nike decided to go with literally any other word (that didn’t have a K).”

10 Alternative Drinks For Your Iftar Table This Ramadan

The month of Ramzan has arrived and no iftar feast is complete without the chilled red sharbat – the favorite beverage for most consumers during this month, in Pakistan and around the world. However, if you’d like a change in taste, we are sharing below a list of (non-red) sharbat alternatives for you to try out and which, we believe are equally refreshing, revitalizing, and thirst-quenching!

  1. Tang

Offered in a variety of flavors, this tangy drink is sure to refresh your mind, once it hits the spot. With just a spoonful to add in water, Tang is economical to make its mark and be on your table. The zesty and sweet taste is bound to give a cool refreshing feeling.

  1. Limopani

A popular drink since ages, Limopani is a perfect beverage for fulfilling your lemonade cravings in Ramzan. Just add a pinch of black salt and some sliced-up lemons for a wholesome experience.

  1. Date Milkshake

Dates are a staple food item during the month of Ramadan. Consuming dates has not only a spiritual significance for Muslims (since Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to break his fast with ripe dates), but also various health benefits; they are rich in copper, selenium and magnesium. It also contains Vitamin K which plays a role in bone metabolism and regulates blood calcium levels.

In 2015, Olpers introduced a limited-edition date milkshake which we hope Olpers can re-introduce/continue with this nutritious product.

  1. Coconut water

Coconut water aids in hydration while containing a lot of nutrients, and soothes the mind and body. It is low in calories which is a perfect alternative to red sharbat for diet-conscious people. Coconut water also eliminates toxins from the body and breaks down kidney stones. After a week-long consumption of coconut water, you will find yourself feeling healthier and more energetic.

  1. Vimto

For fans who love berry-flavored drinks, Vimto has the perfect sugar content that helps in feeling vitalized and relieved, and offers an instant energy boost.

Rooh Afza is not just limited to water, but it can also be a new flavor for a milkshake. To keep blood pressure in control, the addition of tukh Malanga (basil seeds) can improve the drink, contributing to a cooling effect.

  1. Pakola

Pakola is a favorite and popular choice amongst consumers. The green flavored syrup can be paired with the addition of milk, to form Doodh soda, which is an effective thirst buster. It is sure to relieve exhaustion after a long day of fasting.

Moreover, Pakola also offers milk drinks in flavors like Rose and Zafran. If not enough, and still craving for something more unique, Pakola has Lime, Pomegranate and Lychee flavored soft drinks.

  1. Fruit Juices

The use of fresh seasonal fruits can be incorporated as a choice of refreshment. However, a lot of brands offer fruit juices such as Nestle, Pakistan’s favorite brand, Fruitien, Shezan, Tropicana, and Slice. For a taste of something new, Nestle has recently introduced a new sparkling fruit drink in Peach and Lime.

  1. Squash

Shezan and Mitchells offer a variety of options in flavors to choose from, which fulfills any seasonal fruit cravings and has a cooling effect once the first sip hits your throat.

These are some of the drink options that can be offered in Ramadan, however, each individual may have different choices when it comes to preferences. However, the above-mentioned are bound to fulfill the need for hydration and nourishment.

Here’s Why Toyota Has Joined Hands With Tesla To Create Self-Driving Cars

Toyota is a renowned household name when it comes to automobiles and we already know Tesla is for the ultra-rich only. So how can they both possibly come together? The answer to that lies in a common goal: to create self-driving cars with a cheaper price tag. Here’s the latest on this partnership:

How Are The Cars Being Developed?

Toyota reported that it is attempting to use low-cost cameras to collect data for self-driving cars. The cameras will aid the automobile in effectively training its self-driving system. This cheap camera is being considered a “breakthrough” because it might just bring these cars into the mainstream.

Until now, the problem was gathering diverse driving data using a massive fleet of cars. It is critical to do so to develop a self-driving car system however, that is extremely costly. Moreover, it is not scalable to test autonomous vehicles with expensive sensors.

It is reported that Tesla has been betting on cameras to collect data from over 1 million vehicles on the road as research. On the other hand, Alphabet’s Waymo and other self-driving car firms have chosen to add expensive sensors like lidars to their self-driving cars.

The Advantage of The Partnership

Toyota added that this collaboration intends to show a lot. It is trying to show that the advantage of Toyota and a large automaker coming together is huge. There is a huge database coming together but with a much smaller cost. They are using cameras that are 90% cheaper than the sensors used before. They can also be easily installed on all cars.

The Changes This Is Creating

Collecting data through these low-cost cameras is believed to be improving the system’s performance. The difference in the system when the system was trained exclusively on high-cost sensor data and now is believed to be extremely small.

However, Toyota is still going to use multiple sensors such as lidars and radars for robotaxis and other autonomous vehicles to be used on the road. This is how the two are bringing their strengths to the table for the betterment of the automobile industry.

Ab Chun Hi Liya Hai Tou Sharmana Kaisa…

Telenor Pakistan, this January, launched their campaign ‘More Se Zyada Faida’, with a fun, quirky, animation-based communication, featuring actor/influencer Saheefa Jabbar and her chirpy and witty parrot ‘Mithu’ – the star of the TVC.

Built upon the element of ‘a pleasant surprise and deliverance’, along with the minglish wordplay, the brand has conveyed its offerings to create value beyond expectations for its customers.

The story focuses on an ordinary-looking parrot Jabbar chooses to buy because she is low on cash and cannot afford to buy the bigger, better-looking one she really wants. However, as the story unravels, her purchase results in a pleasant surprise as the ‘ordinary’ parrot she has just bought turns out to be an extraordinary ‘talking parrot’ – equally extraordinary is the expression on Jabbar’s face once she hears it talking “Ab Chun Hi Liya Hai Tou Sharmana Kaisa… Houn Nahi Main Koi Aesa Wesa.

Commenting on the communication, Umair Mohsin, Chief Marketing Officer, Telenor Pakistan, says, “More Se Zyada Faida reflects as an apt translation of our brand promise, where we delight consumers by providing MORE than they expect.”

He says, “For Telenor Pakistan, the customers remain the focal-point and the company is continuously striving to be the value add-on in the lives of over 49 million Pakistanis.” Hence, they wanted to offer value that not only builds on the brand but also strategically increases brand consideration preference; resulting in higher brand love and equity. “We also intended to communicate the concept of value that Telenor offers through its services, emerging as a trusted everyday partner,” he says.

Since customers are at the heart of what Telenor does, Mohsin says the brand understands that competition may not only be based on price in every instance, hence, it is important to look for ways to create true value. For this, the brand conducted rigorous, comprehensive behavioral studies before the campaign that entailed scrutinizing customers’ consumption and purchase patterns as well as defining their usage and preference, according to which they could provide offers that are best suited to them.

“What is more pleasant than surprisingly getting a talking parrot, which you weren’t willing to buy in the first place, and that too with an intriguing personality?” questions Mohsin and adds that, “in the TVC, Jabbar gets more out of less spend, more joy and more value… more of every experience with Telenor.”

In order to create maximum impact, added recall, as well as “a layer of entertainment and visual delight”, Telenor has come up with sequential ads (thematic and tactical) for this quarter. This will ensure that the brand’s message stays constant with improved top-of-mind for customers.

According to Mohsin, the campaign has received an overwhelming response from customers, with the key protagonist ‘Mithu’ (whose voiceover was done by Fahad Mustafa) receiving a lot of traction.

Going forward, Mohsin says since Telenor’s brand promise revolves around ‘More Se Zyada Faida’, the same strategy will be adopted in the campaigns ahead which will hopefully be delighting its userbase again.

Airbus A380 Completes Its 3-Hour Flight Using Cooking Oil As Fuel

oil airbus a380

Airbus A380 is known everywhere as the world’s largest passenger airliner. Call it for sustainability or simply to test its strength, the airliner has been run on the most unusual type of oil you would expect. Have a look at what sort of journey has just been completed and why it is going viral.

Read more: Tesco Nails Its First Major Ramadan Campaign

What Happened?

The Airbus A380 just recently completed a flight that was run on cooking oil. Yes, it is hard to believe for everyone but this experiment has been successfully completed. The A380 is a massive wide-body airliner that is used by international commercial airlines like British Airways, Emirates, and Korean Air. This mega plane officially touched down on Friday after a successful test flight from Airbus’ French headquarters in Toulouse.

oil airbus a380

It is said that the plane was powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This fuel is a blend of used cooking oil, agricultural residue, and non-fossil CO2.

Has This Been Done Before?

Airbus is said to have conducted test flights with SAF before too. However, the difference is that the aircraft before were much smaller. The SAF fuel was tested on Airbus 350 in March of last year. Following that, it was A319neo, the single-aisle aircraft’s turn. All three of these tests have been successful as the plane engineers suggest no change was noted in the engine.

Addressing Environmental Concerns

The fact that such a huge aircraft can run easily on SAF is a huge achievement. Airline emissions are all basically related to jet fuel combustion which is a major global environmental concern. This latest test run is important because SAF may be able to address these issues.

oil airbus a380

SAF actually emits just 20% of the CO2 that traditional fuel and aircraft do. Naturally, it has less impact on air quality. In addition to this, there are supposedly many benefits for the airlines too. For instance, SAF testing has proven to be 1.5 -3 percent more efficient than traditional fuel. This results in higher payload conditions and also an extended range. How would you like to be seated in an aircraft that is running partially on cooking oil?

Beechtree, Yet Again, Fails To Impress Its Audience With Its Latest Ad

Beechtree’s latest ad for their new Pret collection has everyone wheezing. No one has any idea about what the brand is trying to sell, and needless to say, the response is hilarious.

Beechtree released a new ad to celebrate its latest collection in stores. However, it isn’t as simple as that. The ad features poor story creation, bad direction, and an overall blah vibe. At first look, it isn’t easy to decide what the brand is trying to sell or show in the video.

The video shows somewhat haphazardly edited scenes. Nobody is quite sure if the girls are trying to channel some kind of emotional attachment or are instructed to look dead straight into the camera. All in all, the ad is confusing and poorly executed.

Hilarious Reactions From The Netizens

Netizens sure were confused rather than amused with the video. They bombarded the comments sections with a variety of comments. Some were extremely hilarious, while others took a massive dig calling out the brand.

The majority couldn’t decipher the message. In contrast, some wondered whether they were trying to sell glasses by zooming in so close to the face, repeatedly. Others questioned if the director still has the job after doing such a lousy job.

“It seems like two girls have shot the video in their home and uploaded it.” One user wrote.

“What are we supposed to buy after watching this ad?” Another wrote.

Tesco Nails Its First Major Ramadan Campaign

Tesco has released its first of a kind campaign which highlights ‘Iftar,’ the evening meal that signifies the end of the daily fast. Running during Ramadan in April, the campaign is created by Tesco’s ad agency BBH. In collaboration with media agency MediaCom, specialist out-of-home agency Kinetic and strategic equity, diversity and inclusion consultancy the Unmistakable.

Together this Ramadan

The digital billboard features a collection of empty plates during the day, which fill up with food as the sun sets to signify Iftar. It is the meal eaten by Muslims at the end of each day’s fast during Ramadan.

The changing image is accompanied by the slogan ‘Together this Ramadan’.  Along with an explanatory line: ‘in honour of everyone fasting, these plates only fill up as the sun goes down.

What Does It Taste Like?

Everyone was thinking of what a drink that is supposed to taste like pixels can actually taste like. How does one create the taste of pixels? People think that the drink will be overly fizzy and may have some taste of ginger inside. This is being assumed because the drink that was supposed to taste like ‘space’ was actually a ginger soda by Coke!

The ‘Byte’ zero coke, however, is not available yet. The drinks will be made available only in the US and will be available for purchase starting from 2nd May.

Where Will It Be and For How Long?

For the first time ever, Coca-Cola products will be sold on its website. The Byte drinks will be made available only on Coke’s site. The company has added that the drinks will be made available in “super limited quantity” and on a first-come, first-serve basis. You snooze, you lose. The drinks will also be sold in twin packs of 12-ounce cans. The cost hasn’t been shared yet.

Every year, Coca-cola has been surprising Pakistanis with their creativity and new ideas in the Out of Home from Coke Studio’s iconic shimmer to iconic landmark takeover.

This year, Coca-Cola took us by surprise with their one-of-a-kind innovation executed by Kinetic Pakistan featuring Live Human/Experiential Billboard for Roar Launch. Roar has recently changed its strategy and come out stronger with newer, better, and bolder taste.

The live billboard in Pakistan for @Roarpk (a product of Coca-Cola company) where an experiential lounge is created within the billboard at Jinnah Flyover in Lahore. The 4,000 ft3 Lion’s Den with brand ambassadors performing inside made the execution intriguing, unmissable, and clutter-breaking.

The imitation of youth socialization at night in Roar den gives the audience on the road an immersive experience of the brand. Brand Ambassadors are seen playing billiard, foosball, and darts and drinking Roar making the night more fun. Roar is setting up hundreds of these “Roar Dens” for youth across Pakistan and the industry-first live billboard just creates unparalleled top of mind of these Dens!
