What’s Driving Up Inflation Globally Ahead Of Ramadan & Why Is It Common In Pakistan?

globally inflation pakistan

Inflation, ahead of the Holy month of fasting in Pakistan, is always expected and always feared. There is no official and effective check and balance on prices in Pakistan which is why the high demand in Ramadan drives up prices so much. However, this time around, inflation, globally, has reached new heights and we’re wondering whether Pakistan is better off or not.

Inflation in Pakistan

Last year, Pakistan’s CPI (consumer price inflation) increased 11.1% before Ramadan which previously stood at more than 9 a month before. The month of fasting brings a greater demand to suppliers which is why retailers of fruit, vegetables, meat, and even other groceries tend to rise too much.

This is also true for big grocery brands that initiate a price hike before Ramadan in the name of “inflation”. However, this price hike is also attributed to people hoarding items before Ramadan which creates a shortage and hence, higher prices.

Egypt’s Crisis

Currently, Egypt is going through a crisis that their President has termed an even more serious crisis than coronavirus. Egypt is the larger importer of wheat and Russia and Ukraine account for 30% of the world wheat supply. In the face of the current war that is going on, both countries have put a hold on their exports for domestic consumption.

As a result, Egypt has had to put aside several billion in order to subsidize food. The Egyptians eat wheat (roti) with everything and hence, higher prices for that will result in a rallying cry. Moreover, Food and Agricultural Organisation have said that the global food prices are at their highest since 1974 when adjusted for inflation.

Indonesia Is In The Same Boat

These crises are traveling far and wide. Indonesia is also facing the highest inflation rate in two years and this is expected to be further aggravated in Ramadan. The country has so far imposed a higher price on their gasoline which has also destabilized the country’s prices.

This shows that countries around the world are facing aggravated inflation due to circumstances. However, Pakistan is facing it simply because the people can. The stall vendors mostly turn towards price their products as they wish. We seldom have more options than to purchase!

The Big Reveal: Pakistan’s Contribution To The FIFA World Cup 2022

Pakistan has been the official ball manufacturer of the World Cup since 1970 now. The factories in Sialkot have been extensively covered, for better or for worse and the tradition has continued. The World Cup ball for 2022 has been unveiled and Pakistan’s contribution is being discussed. Here’s what’s going on:

What Did Pakistan Do For The Ball?

Pakistan officially made all the balls for the World Cup taking place this year. The ball has also been given a name this time around. It is called “Al Rihla” which means “the journey”. That is an apt name for sure because the ball travels from the heart of Pakistan onto famous stadiums where all that is glitters may be gold.

The ball also mentions “Made in Pakistan” which is always a moment of pride for our country.

What Are People Saying Is The Real Contribution?

However, all those who point out that Pakistan made the ball for the World Cup, are doing so with a passive-aggressive tone. They all want to pull attention to how Pakistan does not get enough recognition for being the official supplier of balls for the tournament. Moreover, aside from the balls, Pakistan provides the “cheap labour” whose sweat, blood, and hard work may be paid a minuscule of what World Cup players are.

FIFA’s Antagonism Towards Pakistan

Despite these services, it appears FIFA is antagonistic towards Pakistan. FIFA has established full control over PFF – Pakistan Football Federation. Last year, a group of football officials, led by Ashfaq Hussain Shah, who was elected as PFF president in the 2018 elections sanctioned by the Supreme Court but not recognized by FIFA, took over the headquarters. This group also seized control from the PFF Normalisation Committee (NC) which was appointed by FIFA and headed by Haroon Malik.

As a result, FIFA has suspended PFF and has also submitted this situation to the Bureau of the Council. With the situation so tense and PFF further behind than it ever was, Pakistan’s contribution to the World Cup deserves greater praise.

Ac

It is the beginning of July, and the temperature in Pakistan has been rising significantly. While summers here give us delicious mangoes, it also gives us an immense amount of humidity.

During June and July, the temperature rises to 45 degrees. It is unbearable to sit under the fan for more than an hour during the daytime. You have likely been using the Air Conditioner often during these months for over the past years to get through summers in the region.

Pakistan is still considered an underdeveloped world, and many can’t afford an Air Conditioner or pay electricity bills. People who do not have Air conditioner back home go through the trouble, especially, during these two months when the temperatures are soaring high.

In this article, we will reveal a step to step guide on how you can make portable air conditioners at home conveniently while also staying in budget.

The tools and things that you require are:

1. Plastic Jar big enough to hold enough ice for one-time use. DC Motor
3. Battery
4. Little Fan, preferably of the size of the jar’s lid
5. A Plastic Bottle (Bottle mouth, you’ll only need the top)
6. A Sharp Cutter
7. A Glue Gun
8. Hot Soldering Iron (Please note that this item can be borrowed from a mechanic)

Step 1: Make tiny holes on the cap of the bottle jar with the help of the Hot Soldering Iron. Make sure to do the job as neatly as possible.

Step 2: Use a permanent marker to draw a hole on the jar keeping the head of the bottle.

Step 3: Once the desired shape is achieved, make another hole. This time a substantially bigger size hole. Refer to the picture below to get a better idea.

Step 4: Use a glue gun to attach the mouth of the bottle to the designated area on the jar

Step 5: Use some more glue gun and attach the DC motor in the middle of the jar cap (outside). See the picture attached below for reference

Step 6: Use a glue gun to attach the battery outside the jar carefully

Step 7: Attach the fan with the DC motor on the cap of the Jar

Step 8: Your DIY Air conditioner is almost ready.

Step 9: Get some ice cubes and fill it in the jar. You will need to add more ice to the spot every time it melts down.

Step 10: Connect the DC Motor with the battery now and enjoy your very own portable Air conditioner

Enjoy your mini air conditioner this summer made by you!

A dry scalp is more common than you think though its commonality does not spare one from its horrendous symptoms. Side effects include itchiness, often pain, dry-looking or excessively oily hair and a whole lot of embarrassment. Before you look at the remedies we present to you, try to identify the reason behind your dry scalp. It can be weather, hair products, your diet or much more. If you have one, here are some home remedies to try.

1. Coconut Oil

Nothing is more nourishing and moisturising for your scalp than coconut oil. Try and get an organic one so you’re not putting anything artificial on your scalp. Massage twice a week on your hair, let it absorb for a few hours and then wash it out! Don’t think putting it overnight will help your scalp, it can make it more oily too.

Tea tree oil is a healer and has antioxidant properties which can soothe your scalp. However, be sure not to put it on your head directly as it is an essential oil after all. Mix some in with a hair mask and then apply it on your scalp only. Wash it out after an hour with a gentle shampoo.

Our nanis and dadis have taught us this one! Nothing can treat a dry scalp like a good ol’ yoghurt hair mask. Simply take homemade yoghurt (best not to get store-bought ones) and add your choice of oil to it or an egg to it and apply it on your scalp. This will be super nourishing for your scalp and also make your hair soft.

5. Mashed Bananas

Bananas are also a source of nourishment and moisturising so they can be great for a dry scalp. Mash or blend some bananas with a tablespoon of coconut oil and apply it to your hair. Blending is better because then the banana chunks won’t get stuck in your hair. Apply for 30 minutes max and enjoy the results.

Banned Pakistani Film ‘Javed Iqbal’ To Premier At UK Asian Film Festival

Banned Pakistani film, Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story Of A Serial Killer, will receive its world premiere at the Opening Gala at the 24th UK Asian Film Festival. The movie will now see the light of day as the opening film of 2022.

The film was banned in Pakistan a few days before its release. The film depicts the untold story of Lahore’s notorious serial killer, Javed Iqbal. As he confessed to police and media that he had abducted, sexually abused and murdered more than 100 boys in Lahore between 1998 and 1999.

He was arrested and sentenced to death. But just two years into his sentence, he allegedly committed suicide in his prison cell. The authorities suspected his horrific crimes were part of a broader paedophile ring.

Inspired by writer and director Abu Aleeha’s novel, ‘Kukri’, the film provides a detailed analysis of Iqbal’s statements and his time in police remand. Without sensationalising the subject matter, the film delves into the psyche and character of Iqbal. At the same time depicting the seriousness and sensitivity of Lahore police during the investigation.

24th, UK Asian Film Festival

The theme of this year’s festival is “Dare To Dream”, which commemorates 75 years of India and Pakistan’s Independence. The curation will acknowledge personal and societal freedoms. At the same time, addressing topical issues such as climate change and human resilience in the face of oppression. The festival format will include screenings, premieres, live events and industry panel discussions.

UK Asian Film Festival Founder and Director Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry MBE say, “We are looking forward to opening UKAFF 2022 with Javed Iqbal, a film that digs deep into the psyche of a serial killer and that highlights the importance of mental well-being. Abu Aleeha’s directorial tells a compelling, real-life horror story of a psychopath captured by a woman police officer, sensitively played by Ayesha Omar.

The importance of this film cannot be underestimated. It brings to light an issue. The abuse and mass murder of young boys as it is of the utmost importance and yet rarely discussed. It has always been far too convenient for South Asian societies to brush such issues under the carpet, but only by creating safe spaces to confront these issues and their root causes can we begin to create the meaningful social change we need. In that way, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the creators of this film.”

Yasir Hussain’s Statement

The lead actor of the film Yasir Hussain who played the role of the serial killer also shared the news on his social media, stating,

“It is a very proud moment for us that UK Asian Film Festival is giving our movie so much respect. However, it is unfortunate that we always fail to acknowledge our content and people.”

“This Pakistani story might have been banned in Pakistan, but make sure to feature five cultural films on Eid.”

UK Asian Film Festival 2022 will run from 4th – 15th May in venues across London, Birmingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwick, Bradford, Stockton and Glasgow; and online via FI Player and Modern Films.

40 Years of Apple: 10 Computers That Made a Mark on History

10 computers that made a mark on history

In its 40 years of existence, Apple, which is celebrating its anniversary on April 1, has revolutionized the history of the personal computer by widening the public’s access to computing and excelling at innovation. Here’s a selection of 10 iconic Apple computers.

1. 1976: the Apple I

This was the very first computer put on sale by the Californian company. Less than 200 copies were produced. Designed by Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne, and Steve Jobs, this rather rudimentary product required a keyboard and a TV to be able to function. It is now a highly prized collector’s item.

2. 1977: the Apple II

Steve Wozniak’s Apple II was a complete model, with a screen, keyboard and data cassette storage. It made Apple a wealthy company. It was the first in a series of models which were produced until 1988, during which time a floppy disk drive and new peripherals were added.

3. 1984: the Macintosh

Unveiled to the general public via a now legendary TV commercial (Ridley Scott’s “1984,” broadcast during the Super Bowl), the Macintosh 128K owed its name to its 128KB of Random Access Memory.

It also had a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive and was delivered with the MacPaint (drawing) and MacWrite (word processing) applications. Its price, below 3,000 dollars, made it an attractive product at that time. A few months later, Apple launched the Macintosh 512K.

4. 1989: the Macintosh Portable

Audacious but too expensive (priced at over 6,000 dollars) and cumbersome (over 7kg) to attract the general public, this first portable model designed by Apple required a mouse to function.

Macintosh Portable

5. 1994: the Power Macintosh

The long line of Power Macs used IBM’s PowerPC processors. This range of computers was produced until 2006, when Apple began to use Intel chips.

6. 1998: the iMac

This first range of all-in-one computers aimed at the general public was a factor in Apple’s revitalization at that time. The iMac stood out from standard PCs because of its innovative design (all the components were integrated into the monitor) and its bright colors.

iMac

7. 1999: the iBook

This computer was considered to be a portable version of the iMac, with a round and colored design. The iBook range, which was a major sales success, was produced until 2006.

iBook

8. 2006: the MacBook

In 5 years of existence, the Macbook had three different designs: a first body in black and white polycarbonate, then a unibody in aluminum, and lastly a unibody version, once again in polycarbonate.

MacBook

The MacBook remains an unprecedented success for Apple, and a new generation was launched in 2015.

9. 2008: the MacBook Air

This new ultra light laptop was a refined and even higher performance version of the MacBook. This series is still Apple’s high-end laptop range.

MacBook Air

10. 2013: the “cylindrical” Mac Pro

This new generation of desktops mainly aimed at business clients is characterized by its unusual design, its 12GB (minimum) of RAM and its compatibility with 4K (ultra-high definition) screens.

The Pavilion was designed by Rashid Rana. Rana is one of the most brilliant, leading artists in South Asia. He worked on the exterior to make it reflect the vibrant seasons of Pakistan. This pavilion of Pakistan consists of a souvenir shop that has art and crafts available for people to see. They can take home Pakistan’s culture in a tiny way back home. Did you know the pavilion also has an official soundtrack composed by Rohail Hyatt? The sound is an amalgamation of four distinct musical styles of Pakistan.

This win must be even more special for Rana because he won this after he just bagged Sitara-e-Imtiaz. This pavilion was made with the help of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP): they engineered the structure. The theme of the structure was “Unit of All That Appears”. The idea was to combine rhombus-shaped aluminum composite panels, with one half in reflective mirror finish and the other printed with UV technology. In this sense, materials were incorporated that break the solidity of the structure and create an optical illusion.

The Hidden Treasures of Pakistan

Pakistan pavilion’s theme was “The Hidden Treasure”. Almost 25 million people from all around the world came to the expo to share ideas and things that take the world forward. Our pavilion is also spread across 2,900sqm.

Here’s How McDonald’s Is Asking Its Consumers To Be More Responsible

mcdonald's campaign

McDonald’s may be the leading fast-food chain in America whose effect on countries around the world has actually been studied. The mega food joint has now called on people to be more responsible through a very powerful campaign. Is this corporate social responsibility or just a great marketing technique? Read about the campaign and learn of its effects here:

Read more: Here’s What Burger King’s New Eco-Friendly Packaging Looks Like

What Is The Campaign?

The campaign is featured in Oslo, Norway for now. McDonald’s has put up signboards on the streets of Norway that have a message: throw your trash properly. The ads show the fast-food joints wrappers littered all around the beautiful city and how it harms the environment and habitat of other living beings.

mcdonald's campaign

The campaign highlights the ugly side of the packaging and why the very packaging that reminds us of McDonald’s is slowly killing our environment. These ads are all shown alongside trash cans so people can be encouraged to use them. Here’s what’s more: there’s a big M on top of the bins also to indicate their use.

Why Is This Important?

As people start becoming more conscious of the impact of their actions on the environment, we have started seeing a huge change. For example, the global movement of reducing or banning plastic shoppers has actually had an impact. However, plastic is the least of our worries right now. Documentaries suggest that huge industries, for instance, the fishing one, are killing our planet slowly.

In this way, asking people to at least be mindful of their trash is the least corporate names can do. Since these campaigns reach far and wide, the message can enter the mainstream consciousness.

Half-Hearted Efforts?

However, the question still stands— is this just a marketing strategy? It may be one because if McDonald’s really cares about their environment, they could start promoting safe and sustainable farming for beef. They could also reduce the plastic in their packaging altogether rather than asking people to just dispose of it properly.

McDonald’s is a mega-industry in and of itself and its corporate practices may be nowhere near sustainability. When such campaigns are then made famous, people can forget the backstage gimmicks.

National UNDP-Jazz SDG Boot Camp Concludes; Bechlo.pk Bags Top Prize

(SDG) Boot Camp conducted jointly by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Jazz. Ten startups, which had earlier won the provincial and thematic boot Camps, participated in the national competition held today in Islamabad.

The winning startup, Bechlo.pk, is a fully integrated online multi-vendor store that provides women with a platform to sell new and pre-loved items from the comfort of their homes. The startup will now be provided with an opportunity to join Youth Co:Lab: the largest youth Social Entrepreneurship movement in Asia and the Pacific along with access to mentorship opportunities and exclusive digital giveaways by Jazz.

Ms. Laura Sheridan, Programme Manager of UNDP’s Youth Empowerment Programme, said at the occasion, “UNDP believes that by developing young people’s 21st century skills, and by catalyzing and sustaining youth-led startups and social enterprises here in Pakistan, we can jointly position young people front and center to solve the country’s most pressing challenges. Together with Jazz, we have provided entrepreneurial skills and supported our participants to develop business plans for sustainability and scalability of their social enterprises.”

Syed Ali Naseer, Chief Business Officer at Jazz, said, “Pakistan’s increasingly tech-savvy youth demographic of over 60%, can be a massive driver for growth. This is a tremendous asset for the country in achieving its socio-economic goals. Jazz is delivering on its promise of empowering youth through technology, knowledge, skillset, and capital. Our partnership with UNDP is a validation of our commitment to strengthening Pakistan through partnerships and I hope these boot camps inspire other social entrepreneurs to take a chance on turning their ideas into successful businesses.”

These boot camps are a part of the agreement inked between UNDP and Jazz in December 2020 with an aim to promote promising social ventures that are addressing the country’s developmental challenges. So far, these boot camps have trained, mentored, and educated 201 nationwide social enterprises, including 159 female participants. The program comprises overall 20 boot camps nationwide by December 2022 targeting close to 800 youngsters and 50 percent women participation.
