Robbery On The Rise – Why Do Karachiites Always Suffer?

robberies karachiites

Patriotic we are, but when it comes to judging cities separately, there is always that fight of whose biryani is better. While we Karachiites do win the biryani battle, we almost always lose when it comes to discussing security. In the past few years, Karachi was rampant with robberies. Sometime later, they just faded away. However, now the conditions have worsened and robberies are on the rise once again.

Karachi & some facts

Well, not facts, but we know that Karachi is the economic hub of Pakistan. No matter how developed Islamabad and Lahore become, most commercial activities still take place in the old capital. The ratio is so huge that the older generation is heard comparing revenue gathered from Karachi with the entire country. If you are a Karachiite, you would have definitely heard your uncle at a gathering, saying, “Lalukhet tax is more than the whole of Punjab.”

But let’s look at some facts too:

The reason

When we posted an article yesterday about the routes that have witnessed the most robberies in Karachi in the past few days, some people shared their opinions. One of those opinions was that more than avoiding the routes altogether, we should discuss the why behind these crimes.

Now, there can be numerous why’s.

  1. It can be that there is unemployment
  2. COVID has not fared in favor of Karachi
  3. It can be that our living continues to be expensive and unaffordable.
  4. It can also be that Karachi still lacks when it comes to law enforcement.

Basically, there are many reasons one can attribute to the increasing crimes in Karachi. Bit it does lead to Karachiites asking one question. Other cities have witnessed better utility services. Their water and electricity problems have been resolved to great extent. Their sewerage system is getting better and better. So, we ask this one question; was the absence of the basic utilities not enough that the security issues for our lives and property will also be rampant?

Hopefully, someone will come across our cries and do something worthwhile for the city. It will be then only that the Karachiites can also walk on the streets easily with their phones out; not worried when a bike with two men will come out with guns ready and rob the phones off of them.

This Maggi Sandwich Is Gaining Quite Some Attention – Would You Try It?

Maggi has, unfortunately, become that food item that is experimented with the most. Most of these experiments are harmful to eyesight. They have the ability to traumatise you for life and also give you food aversion from Maggi. Now, there’s a new Maggi food experiment out there and it’s killing us. Here’s why:

The Latest Maggi Experiment

Someone in Mumbai decided to ruin Maggi for the world. They made a Maggi grilled cheese sandwich and made it go viral on social media! The sandwich has cheese stuffed inside it and also some Maggi. The toasted sandwich is also laden with Maggi on top. It’s just a jungle of Maggi and has cheese and toast in it also.

As the picture also shows, the Maggi is dry! Now that is clearly an abomination. Maggi maybe had a little dry or soupier but we have it nonetheless with its soup! Why would you take the Maggi out of the soup entirely? It’s unfair and uncalled for.

The Dish

It’s Very Common

Apparently, it’s a proper thing in India! People make Maggi grilled sandwiches regularly and with a whole lot of love. As you can see here, if you search ‘Maggi grilled sandwich’ you’ll get more than 10 recipes people have lovingly put together. We may have different tastes from our friends across the border but this is unacceptable.

The recipes call for straining the Maggi noodles. Again, why discriminate against the soup?

Should Maggi Be Had As It Is?

Maggi is the instant noodle snack kids of the subcontinent have grown up having. It’s been there for us when our parents or friends could not. It’s the ultimate comfort food. So in this case, should we disrespect Maggi and use it like this? The answer is simply no!

Maggi noodles can be used in a Singaporean dish with noodles and rice. However, what is really rude is straining the noodles and stuffing them in sandwiches. However, if it really is something that makes people happy, what can we say? After all, this is much better than mixing chocolate with noodles!

Standard Chartered Survey: 92% Of Affluent In Pakistan Can’t Meet Life-Goals Due To ‘Confidence Gap’

Standard Chartered’s latest survey into affluent (comprising emerging affluent, affluent and high net worth) consumers in 12 markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and UK, revealed that in Pakistan 92 per cent of them have reset their life goals following the pandemic. At the same time, for 50 per cent of the respondents, COVID-19 has diminished their confidence in their finances, preventing them from taking the actions necessary to achieve their new goals.

COVID-19 has prompted the affluent in Pakistan to become more future-focused when resetting their priorities: half (49 per cent) of people have set the goal to ‘to improve my health’, followed by 40 per cent of people setting the goal of setting aside more for their children’s future (education or financial support).

To meet these new goals, the affluent need new strategies to grow their wealth, which often involves more proactive investment rather than just saving cash. However, their current ‘confidence gap’ has made many increasingly averse to risk, potentially stopping them from putting their money to work, through investing or making use of digital tools that simplify wealth management.

The ‘confidence gap’ is greater for the emerging affluent
The emerging affluent have disproportionately suffered a loss of confidence, with almost half (47 per cent) reporting less confidence compared with 30 per cent of high net-worth (HNW) individuals. That means those lower down the wealth spectrum, still establishing their finances, stand to lose out more if they do not have the support to rebuild their confidence.

For the affluent across the wealth spectrum in Pakistan, the three most common factors impacting their confidence were ‘volatility in financial markets’ (35 per cent), ‘fear of poor returns on investments’ (29 per cent) and ‘lack of time to devote to planning and research’ (25 per cent).

Retirement is at risk
A late start to retirement planning, combined with the pandemic-induced confidence gap, leaves a significant proportion of affluent consumers at risk of a shortfall for their retirement. The survey found that 44 per cent of people do not currently save/invest for retirement. For those that do, ‘investment income’ (43 per cent) and ‘cash savings / deposits’ (42 per cent) are the most common expected sources of income in retirement. At the same time, 46 per cent plan to retire before the age of 65 and 13 per cent have set a new financial goal of retiring early. This shows a disconnect between current actions and future expectations, if a confidence gap is holding them back from investing.

A pro-active approach can help the affluent regain control
Globally, almost all (94 per cent) of investors who had tried more than five new investments or investment strategies reported being happy with their finances. Whether it is diversifying into new asset classes, new investment strategies to rebalance their portfolios, or exploring sustainable investing, the survey revealed that more hands-on investors are happier with their finances.

In Pakistan, almost all (94 per cent) of those who have made five or more changes to their portfolios, following the pandemic, are happy with their investment portfolio.

Zaigham Sherrif, General Manager Personal Segment, Standard Chartered Bank Pakistan said “The study shows that Adapting to their post pandemic needs, ‘44% of people are setting aside more money for the future, while 38% are now researching new financial products and 32% are now setting ‘new targets for performance / value of any investments’. Rethinking their priorities, 36% of the people want to make their finances more future proof and secured now, as per the market volatility and low interest rates.”

Hence, cash savings have become insufficient to meet the growing financial needs over longer life spans. The affluent people must make long term investments, with a global bank like Standard Chartered, as we have all the resources and expertise to empower our customers to build diversified portfolios of investments and to enjoy a comfortable retirement, with many lucrative opportunities.” He added.

Zaigham further said: “Digital Banking and investments on the go can now help them save for unforeseen events and top priorities like children’s education, as the consumers seek complementary sources of returns, with an increased inclination towards a healthier lifestyle.”

Minal Khan and Ahsan Mohsin Ikram are in hot waters again for showing a PDA-packed picture. However, this time, the picture is not from a birthday celebration but at the Kartarpur Corridor. Meanwhile, netizens are coming with all their might at the couple for shamelessly posing in front of a religious location and hurting Hindu sentiments.

Minal and Ahsan’s Post On Social Media

Minal and Ahsan are known for their public display of affection. The couple has been spotted on multiple occasions long before their wedding; embracing each other in arms. The recipe for disaster in our society, PDA made the public repulsive to the couple and every time they were caught hanging out, netizens made sure to criticise the couple.

In today’s episode, the couple is once again under the netizens radar for posting an intimate picture together. And if that was not enough the picture is taken in front of the Kartarpur border, the religious Gurdwara Darbar Sahib of the Hindu community. Sounds like an absolute nightmare? Seems like the couple doesn’t give two hints about anything and anyone at this point for they have been enjoying their life too much to care about the public’s reaction.

Here’s How Artist Royalties Are Coming To The Pakistani Entertainment Industry

artist royalties

Senator Faisal Javed Khan has just touched upon something in the Senate which has given artists of Pakistan a sigh of relief. The senator is hard at work to modernise or rather, ensure the entertainment industry is up-to-date with the years. Here’s why you really need to know what he just proposed:

What Bill Is Being Worked On?

Faisal Javed is attempting to introduce a bill that will give Pakistani artists and creatives the right to get what is theirs. He is repairing the Copyright Act, 1962 so that it empowers artists with the rights to demand royalties. This is worthy of consideration as until now, artists did not have the right to demand royalties.

However, before this bill is first, something else has to be passed. He proposed a resolution in December and it has to be passed by Senate first without opposition. Khan believes this is not a cause of concern, it can get passed unanimously. The resolution is a part of the Senate’s January 17 agenda.

Issues of Royalties

The issue of royalties has been a huge obstacle in the Pakistani entertainment industry. Royalties are the rightful payment to artists for their artistic work. As a result, Pakistani artists were suffering even though their artistic work was popularly enjoyed. Thus, in 2022, the least the government can do is safeguard artists. The film policy is also stuck at the bureaucratic level.

“Actors are given royalties worldwide. If we don’t change the working environment of our artists, or change the way they live, then we will have killed creativity ourselves,” Senator Khan added.

What Is Wrong With The Current Act?

According to Khan, the Copyright Act is “redundant and outdated.” The Copyright Act has key sections pertaining to licensing and royalties but they are not productive.

The solution for Khan lies in defining artists better and their assignment of work needs to be expanded upon. Khan also suggests that sub-categories would be added to keep up with the range of work in today’s world. A hint at what all would be included is that artists are all those who contributed to the creation of art — actors, producers, directors, writers, or musicians.

7 Most-Hated Video Games No Gamer Would Ever Recommend

Gaming is one of the most prevalent hobbies of the 21st Century. Even though millennials and Generation Z were disciplined for playing too many games in their teens and pre-teens, the gaming industry has evolved to become a multi-billion dollar industry. It even started an entirely different sports industry called the e-sports industry.

There are numerous reviews about the best games on the internet. However, not much content is available for the worst games ever considered as money being burned by those who were unfortunate enough to purchase them.

1. 50 Cent: Bulletproof (Multiple formats, 2005):

Bulletproof was an action game released at the height of fame of the popular rapper; 50 Cent. The game had a terrible story-line and had early-90s SEGA vibes in its graphics. The story-line was 50 Cent murdering his way through missions, and nobody remembers that this game existed despite having 50 Cent endorsement.

2. Aliens Colonial Marines (2013):

This is probably the only game that got a lawsuit by disgruntled players who disliked this game to that extent. The game was a mess with so many glitches that it turned out to be a mess and is considered one of the worst games ever.

3. Bad Street Brawler (1989):

Released with Nintendo’s handheld controller, the game only had three actions that the player; punch, kick and return game to shop. The game’s story was a punk rock man beating up circus little people and bulldogs. The game was one of the worst; maybe it has more to do with the fact it was released in 1989.

4. Bubsy (3D):

Mario Cart’s bad impersonation was a disastrous game with not one thing good about it. The game was terrible in all aspects, whether its graphics, storyline, or missions. Everything was a disaster, and you wouldn’t want to be the one who would pay for this game.

5. Custer’s Revenge:

The game was terrible and had a problematic storyline where the player had to attempt to rape a woman. Do we need to say more?

6. Ethnic Cleansing:

This was another problematic game with an extremely socially unacceptable storyline where you could choose fascism and kill your African, Mexican, and Jewish enemies. It was a bizarre concept and was widely popular among the Neo-Nazis.

7. Hatred (2015):

Hatred was a poor attempt at making a dark, violent game and trying to give it a Mortal Kombat like vibe, which was a poor attempt. The game was extremely boring to play with poor features and limited action for the players.

The following games were some of the worst games ever, as per the commentary on the internet. Were you unfortunate enough to spend money on any one of them?

No new and upcoming phone, especially when they’re Samsung’s flagship phone, can do without leaks. Samsung’s latest phone release has been leaked by what sources call a “reliable leak” and we have juicy information. If you’re a Samsung kind of person, you need to know these things now!

What’s Launching?

Samsung is just about to launch its new flagship Samsung Galaxy S22-series phones. This year the South Korean tech company will feature three phones of the same model. These are said to include the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung Galaxy S22+, and the highest-end Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. While this news may not surprise you that much, know that the leak features even more details.

The leaking publication has also managed to acquire official Samsung Galaxy S22+ smartphone renders, other specifications and many more details.

The noted leaker in question is Ishan Agarwal. He has been responsible for several leaks prior to this one too! Agarwal shared the Samsung Galaxy S22+ renders and gave us a good look at what’s about to launch.

The front of the smartphone features a single punch-hole cutout in the center for the selfie camera. Additionally, the display is framed by uniformly narrow bezels. The S22 smartphone’s right spine features the volume up/down buttons and the power button. What’s more is that the side edge also features antenna linings that make it look like the phone has a metal chassis.

The reports, so far, hint at a triple camera set up at the back. Could that be taken as Apple inspiration? We’ll have to find out. Until then know that the right side of this vertical rear-mounted camera setup will feature an LED flash as well that’s going to be higher powered. Lastly, the bottom of the phone’s rear panel has a Samsung logo, evidence of why you will spend so much money on it.

Newer, Better, Stronger

The Samsung Galaxy S22+ will be slightly heavier, weighing in at 195 grams. The heaviest and perhaps most expensive will be Galaxy S22 Ultra model weighing 228 grams.

After Alipay, British Airways, Deliveroo, And Air BnB, Daraz Gets A New Identity From Design Studio

Karachi, 17th January, 2022: London-based branding and digital creative agency – Design Studio aids Daraz to bring its big ideas to life with a new brand look.  The leading e-commerce platform in South Asia, which originated from a small fashion retailer has now a monthly active user base of more than 15 million. The platform has now a unified seller marketplace and large-scale brands under one umbrella exposing its consumers to a high volume of content.

Ammar Hassan, Chief Marketing Officer at Daraz said, “Over the years, we have seen how the e-Commerce landscape has evolved in our markets. Introducing the new technology to improve our services, we established a strong connection between our consumers of all ages. In order to cater to a broader user base, we wanted to give our brand a new identity. We partnered with a world renown design agency – Design Studio which has changed the identity of many international brands like Deliveroo, Air BnB, Alipay, British Airways and many other. We are proud of what Design Studio has accomplished, and we look forward to uplift our communities while staying true to our iconic history and relevance to consumers.”

Design Studio – a renowned international branding and digital creative agency – is aiding Daraz to truly bring its new purpose to its audience. This way, the e-Commerce channel is unveiling a new brand platform, identity and strategy created by Design Studio. Having previously catered to big brands, such as Airbnb, OLX, Panasonic, Deliveroo, and Tencent Games, Design Studio has immense experience in visualizing brand architecture.

In line with this transformation, the new look for Daraz is more contemporary, young and dynamic. Consequently, it hopes to contribute to changing the perception of the brand, from just an online marketplace to one that provides a complete, three-dimensional customer and seller experience.

Moreover, Design Studio has given a voice to Daraz’s mission of uplifting communities through the power of commerce. To achieve this, the creative agency undertook thorough user research to better understand customer and seller needs – and push forward a brand identity that resonates with their expectations.

Eventually, as businesses evolve over the years, their message to the audience changes accordingly. Hence, it is important that the brand aesthetic continuously shifts to embody the brand’s dynamic core values and goals. Ultimately, the consumers resonate with the brand and become loyal to it only when the brand identity is expressed through a beautiful and relatable design

In turn, design principles help businesses establish an emotional relationship with their customers when used effectively. Similarly, inculcating a modified set of shapes and colors gives companies a creative direction when they need to rebrand. For instance, when an enterprise’s values and goals change, design teams embody this transformation by utilizing their creative flair.

As a result, the ecommerce giant consistently enables digitization, helps SMEs and content creators establish themselves and encourages financial inclusion.

Netizens are laughing at the cringe-acting of Feroze Khan, as they always do. In addition to that, they’re all wondering how this guy got so big without knowing what a ‘mehram’ is. Not Their First Rodeo

It may be surprising or it simply may not be but this isn’t the first time this drama got famous. Earlier, their clip of the two discussing where to go for their honeymoon went viral because it was more awkward than anyone can handle. People also went crazy with their memes earlier when they saw the clip.

It seems crazy to expect that these dialogues have been written in seriousness. If they have been, what sort of characters are we trying to show to the world? Pakistani dramas have recently upped their game but this one bad egg might ruin the name of others.

Apple iPhone 14 Lineup: Here’s Everything You Need To Know

After a successful launch of its iPhone 13 series last year, Apple is expected to unveil its new ‘iPhone 14 Pro’ models this year. A new report suggested that Apple iPhone 14 Pro would come with a big camera upgrade. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 series in or around September. Current Pro iPhones ship with a 12MP camera onboard. However, iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a 48MP camera.

A 48MP camera is expected to be introduced to the iPhone 14 Pro series (tentative name) that Apple will release this year.

Key Features Of iPhone 14

Recently, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max would be shifting over to a hole-punch cutout for the camera.

According to the details, the new phones will also ditch the infamous camera bump. Instead, it will feature a thicker flush glass back that lays over the rounded edges. The OLED display panels will be supplied by LG and come with support for a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.

For data transfers and charging, we could also expect to see the company switching to a USB Type-C connector. This partly has to do with the European Union’s new rule. It mandates that all mobile producers adopt a single universal charging solution, which further results in reduced e-wastage. However, Jon Prosser notes that Apple still might hold onto its lightning ports.

iPhone 14 specifications and hardware

With iPhone 14, a new, more powerful A16 Bionic processor is expected, adopting a 4nm chip process. The display will be the same 120Hz ProMotion across all devices, though analyst Ross Young notes that the base variant will feature a standard 60Hz LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) display.

The base and pro variants will sport a 6.06-inch display featuring a 2532 x 1170 resolution, while the Max and Pro Max options measure 6.68 inches and support a 2778 x 1284 resolution. It is also worth noting that only the Pro Max variant has an LTPO display, which, as mentioned above, is being supplied by LG. Whether this translates to a punch-hole camera setup exclusive to the Pro Max, only time will tell.

Biryani With Or Without Raita: This Twitter Debate Is Real

biryani raita

The Biryani with or without aloo has come to a rest as another debate sparks. Tell us, do you have your biryani with or without RAITA?

Biryani – Uniting or Disuniting?

Biryani has been a major force of unison in Pakistan and overall desi households. There’s nothing a big plate of it can not fix. However, are you noticing how Biryani has also become a huge force of disunity? First, it’s the fuss over aloo or no aloo, then the Lahore vs. Karachi biryani and now it’s the raita issue!

Aloo Got Lost in The Mail

The aloo is an innocent piece that has been rejected by many and loved by many. Some will die defending its place in a biryani while others get worked up just hearing the name of it. The debate is surely as old as time but the saddest part is that we never found an answer to it!

Raita – The New Avenger

Now there is a new avenger on the block and it’s an exciting feat we are witnessing. A debate on Twitter was sparked over whether raita is essential with a plate of biryani or not.

The response is incredible and truly characteristic of Pakistanis. Here’s what people are saying!

Will The Real Side Please Stand Up?

Can the real legitimate side to a biryani please stand up? A raita, in our humble opinion, is what makes biryani, biryani! It’s also just as loveable as aloos to be honest, make it in any which way you want. Be it with vegetables, with mint, with just zeera… the list goes on and so does our love for it.

If you have a steaming hot plate of biryani but don’t have raita to simmer the spice levels, chances are your biryani is not as spicy. And that, our friends, is a sign of a weak biryani.

Aloo, Raita, City- What’s Next

There are three major issues in the biryani debate which have been discussed at length. What is going to be next? We’ll take your guesses but ours is of colour!

biryani raita

In most biryanis, an additive colour is added to give it that gorgeous sheen of mustard/yellow that we love to see. Without it, a biryani is essentially speckled with white and yellow. Now there may be some who love that too but like anything, there will be haters. Are you ready for a new fight to go down?
