Mini Budget 2023: Here’s What You Need To Know

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has presented a mini-budget in the Parliament proposing Rs170 billion ($639 million) in taxes in hopes of clearing the way for a stalled loan program. The Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2023 — or the ‘mini-budget’ was presented first in the National Assembly and then in the Senate.

The Mini Budget 2023

The mini-budget intends to raise the GST to 18 percent from 17 percent. The added tax will generate extra revenue of about Rs170 billion ($639 million) during the current budget year ending in July. Meanwhile, the newly imposed budget is bound to skyrocket inflation and

While addressing a press conference, Ishaq Dar emphasized completing the IMF program in hopes of getting the economy and reserves back on its track.

“We will go through it on the weekend. A virtual meeting with the IMF will be held after that on Monday,” he said and further explained that once the MEFP has been finalized, the IMF has its internal process and then a Board meeting is held. And then finally, when approval is given, the [tranche] is disbursed. It is a standard process which can neither be shortened and hopefully they won’t extend it unnecessarily.”

According to Ishaq Dar, “Taxation measures of Rs170 billion will be taken as opposed to the rumours of Rs700-800 billion, and Rs170 billion will have to be recovered within four months in this fiscal year.” Adding that the government would not impose General Sales Tax on oil products.

Multinet and TIP to build the World’s Largest Open Optical Transport Network of 3.2 Tbps capacity across Multinet’s Fiber Footprint in Pakistan

Multinet, Pakistan’s business communications company of choice, today announced that it will be upgrading its optical transport network that spans the entire country covering more than 120 cities, across more than 14,000 kilometers.

Greatly expanding capacity, this long-haul network infrastructure deployment upgrades the network with 3.2 Tbps capacity using Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Open Optical framework which has been designed to provide better connectivity around the world. This project will be the world’s largest Open Optical framework implementation and the network upgrade will not only enable Multinet to bring the agility and hyper scalability to the immensely growing bandwidth demand in Pakistan but will also add more cities and towns on Multinet’s fiber network, hugely increasing the data and internet access capacity to urban, semi urban and rural areas across Pakistan.

“When we decided to upgrade our long-haul network, we knew it had to be built with an approach to make it agile, scalable and sustainable and that becomes possible with an open and disaggregated technology. That’s the future of telecommunications and it is why we went with Open Optical and Packet Transport technologies, the network upgrade also brings home the world’s largest Open Optical framework implementation which is a first for Pakistan and I am proud to share this landmark achievement,” said Adnan H. Zaidi, Chief Operating Officer, Multinet. “Open networks, like this deployment, will streamline operations and accelerate innovation.”

TIP’s mission for the Open Optical and Packet Transport initiative is to create open and disaggregated technologies, architectures, and interfaces for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and IP networks. Open Optical transport networks have been called a “megatrend” by Sterling Perrin, Principal Analyst for Heavy Reading, and he predicts it will have a major impact on architectures in the coming years. Multinet’s long-haul network infrastructure deployment features software and hardware from TIP’s Open Optical ecosystem and industry leading players including Edgecore, IP Infusion, Smartoptics along with local System Integrator partner in Pakistan, STARCOM Technologies (Pvt) Limited. Multinet’s upgrade incorporates Cassini, TIP’s disaggregated coherent switch and open packet transponder built by Edgecore Networks, and IP Infusion’s OcNOS, the industry’s full-featured network OS for white box disaggregated network solutions that provides the scalable transition from traditional networks to open and agile networks.

“This is a shining example of Mulitnet’s ongoing commitment to bringing modern, cutting-edge technologies to Pakistan,” said Sandeep Kohli, Connectivity Technologies and Ecosystems Manager, Meta and member of the TIP Open Optical and OpenWiFi Program Groups. “Multinet believes in open and disaggregated technologies including Open Optical and OpenWiFi. That’s why they are known as one of the most trusted infrastructure partners in the region.”

“Multinet continues to demonstrate its leadership with their use of open and disaggregated technologies to drive modern connectivity solutions in Pakistan,” said Kristian Toivo, Executive Director, TIP.

“We strive to be the recognized leader in all communications, market segments and markets we serve and this network upgrade supports our vision,” continued Adnan H. Zaidi.

Running Low On Storage? Take Advantage Of These iOS Features

Source: CNET

You can delete huge files such as movies, TV series, and music albums, but you may not be ready to do so. There are also different cloud choices to supplement your existing storage, but this entails moving information around and may incur additional costs. You could also simply get a new phone with extra storage, but this is an expensive alternative.

As a result, if none of these solutions appeal to you, you may and should use specific iOS capabilities to free up storage on your iPhone without having to remove anything or pay any money.

Optimize your Iphone

It’s not always easy to just erase what’s on your camera roll, so if you want to save your cherished memories, or even just your meme screenshots, but still free up device capacity, the simplest method to do so is to optimize the photographs and videos currently on your device. By default, any photo or video you capture is saved in full quality on your smartphone. When you shoot images and movies at the best resolution available, they might take up a lot of space.

Is Your iPhone Storage Full? Here Are 5 Tips to Optimize iPhone Storage
Source: PanFone

To optimize your photographs and videos, go to Settings > Photos and turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (this will only work if you have the iCloud Photos setting activated above it).

Upgrade your iCloud storage

If you don’t have enough iCloud storage, upgrading your cloud is a better option than purchasing a new phone. In the United States, you may upgrade to 50GB for a dollar per month, or go bigger: 200GB for $3 per month or 2TB for $10 per month. Prices vary according to your country or area.

On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > (your name) > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Buy More Storage.

Offload heavy apps

You do not utilize every app that is installed on your iPhone. Many of them, such as applications for your favorite airlines, third-party cameras, and music production, simply sit there. Even if you only use them sometimes, you don’t require regular, everyday access to most applications, which is why you should consider offloading apps if you severely need capacity.

Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
Source: Apple support

Check which applications are using the most capacity by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Be aware that some built-in applications, like as Photos and Messages, cannot be uninstalled.

If you require temporary storage for a software download, simply go through the list and uninstall as many apps as you can. The amount offloaded for each app will vary, but the figure should appear next to App Size. Remove the number next to Documents & Data, as it will remain on your device. The only way to get rid of it is to uninstall the software.

PSL 2023 In Karachi: Enjoyment Or Inconvenience?

PSL 2023 In Karachi? Enjoyment Or Inconvenience

PSL is already over with the first week of its matches. The people of Karachi might just be getting frustrated enough to realize that PSL 8 being conducted in Karachi may be more of a nuisance than a blessing.

Karachi, a city known for its vibrant energy and bustling streets, is also infamous for its traffic problems. The roads of Karachi are filled with honking cars, buses, and motorcycles, all vying for space on the congested streets. During rush hour, traffic often grinds to a standstill, causing frustration and delays for commuters. The traffic jams also contribute to air pollution, with car exhaust fumes filling the air and creating a haze over the city.

Pedestrians and bicyclists also struggle to navigate the streets, as sidewalks are often blocked by parked cars or used as makeshift lanes by motorcycles. Despite efforts to improve the traffic flow and public transportation, the challenges continue to mount, leaving many Karachiites feeling trapped in their own city.

Karachi Jampacked Because Of PSL Traffic

The already congested traffic in the city has been made worse by the closing of roads around the National Stadium Karachi for the protection of foreign players competing in the Pakistan Super League. Some Karachi residents have turned to Twitter to ask the government to come up with a better plan and make better preparations for upcoming events in light of the congested thoroughfares and the enormous number of stationary cars.

The majority of the people are not against the tournament itself but blame the local government for its inability to manage and contain traffic within the city. Karachi is already undergoing construction and the PSL chaos only adds to the madness. Karachiites are already complaining about the daily difficulties they face while commuting within the city. Here are some of those problems.

  • Ill-trained traffic police officials.
  • Traffic and roadblocks caused by the expo.
  • Multiple roadblocks despite the Government claiming the opposite of it.
  • Lack of alternate traffic plans.
  • Lack of security from Government officials.

Moreover, another concern has been raised by not one but many citizens. The question is if the PSL tournament could’ve been held in another stadium instead of the National Stadium. The National Stadium is right in the center of Karachi and is also located where most of the traffic jams are witnessed because of the Expo Centre. Other stadium options include the Rafi Cricket Stadium in Bahria Town and the Southend Club Stadium in DHA.

Bahria Town Stadium

Both stadiums have enough capacity to host tournaments like PSL and are far enough from the main city so as to not cause any disturbances for the citizens. They also have proper routes and parking areas. Pakistani people have invested in Bahria Town’s development which is also one of the reasons why Karachiites wonder about this problem when they’re stuck in traffic. This is why many people wonder why these stadiums could not have been used for PSL.

Karachi is already undergoing construction and with more than half of the city being destroyed and already difficult to live in, PSL is only adding to the worries of the citizens. Getting to work, school, and other destinations have become extremely stressful and anxious for everyone. The pollution because of the traffic and the construction is also having a negative impact on the environment.

Will the government pay any heed to the citizens’ cries this time?

All You Need To Know About Bing’s New ChatGPT

Soirce: Crast.net

If you’re one of the “many millions” in the queue for the new Bing, maybe you won’t have to wait long. According to a tweet from Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi, the new Bing will be available to “millions of people” in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has unveiled the new Bing on the web and in its Edge browser, which is driven by a next-generation OpenAI GPT model and Microsoft’s own Prometheus model. Microsoft has moved ahead of Google in bringing this type of search experience to the masses, though the competition is expected to ramp up in the coming months. We’ve now had the opportunity to test the new Bing, and as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated at his press conference, “it’s a new day for search.”

if you are one of the fortunate few who have gained access, you may find yourself dedicating as much time to presenting it with random prompts, judging its proficiency, and attempting to provoke a malfunction as you do to really searching for relevant information. We’ve seen Bing assist users to identify the greatest coffee shops in Seattle and offer them a very good plan for a three-day weekend in NYC during the last week.

There is still room for improvement

However, when conducting another random search for the top restaurants in the neighborhood, it refused to show more than the ten it had previously provided, after which Google came to the rescue.

This is somewhat uneven, as Bing appears to forget that this new experience exists, especially for some recipe queries, which the company emphasized in its demos (“give me a recipe for banana bread”). You can still enjoy the new AI experience by switching to the chat view, although it might be perplexing to get it for one inquiry but not another. It’s also unclear when the new AI experience will appear on the sidebar. While the new Bing experience isn’t required for all searches, I believe people will now expect to see it every time they search.

Bing’s problematic answers

The findings are mostly positive, but in early testing, it was still too simple to persuade Bing to produce inappropriate replies. You need to offer Bing some difficult inquiries from AI researchers who tested them in ChatGPT, and Bing will gladly answer most of them – at least to a degree.

Source: TC

Bing’s chat tool, like ChatGPT, isn’t always 100% correct. You’ll soon discover minor errors. When I inquired about TechCrunch podcasts, it mentioned our Actuator newsletter. This newsletter does not have a podcast version.

When asked about more specific issues, such as the requirements for nighttime visual flying as a solo pilot, the answers might be ambiguous, in part because the model attempts to be so talkative. It wants to tell you all it knows — including irrelevant information — here, as it does so frequently. In this situation, it informs you the daytime regulations before teaching you the nighttime restrictions but doesn’t make that all that apparent.

Hacks To Keep Strawberries From Spoiling Quickly

Mahira Khan has come out with a clothing brand and the fans are not amused. The actress took to social media to announce the release of her first clothing line 'M by Mahira'. The clothing lines feature an elaborate series of white kurta and white dupattas heavily inspired by the aura of the 90s. The brand thrives on designing minimalist and crafty pieces to elevate your daily wardrobe. However, there is a catch.

You just bought some gorgeous strawberries, and you’re ready to start using them up — either in a delicious smoothie or a completely delectable dessert. The only problem? You know that strawberries can be notoriously finicky and don’t last very long once they’re picked. It’s no secret that berries, especially strawberries, don’t stay fresh for long. But with a few simple steps, you can make sure that your strawberries stay fresher and last longer!

Rinse Them Properly

To keep your strawberries from spoiling quickly, proper rinsing is key! Before you eat them or store them away in the refrigerator, here’s what you need to do to preserve their freshness:

  1. Be gentle when washing—too much agitation will cause the delicate berries to break apart and spoil faster.
  2. Use cold water, as warm water can cause the strawberries to break down and start to rot from within.
  3. Don’t soak them in water for too long; a quick rinse should do.
  4. Pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel after rinsing—this will help stave off mold and bacteria growth which can lead to spoilage.

Rinsing your strawberries correctly really isn’t hard, and it will go a long way toward helping keep your deliciously sweet berries at their peak of freshness for as long as possible.

Use Vinegar Bath

One thing you can do is give them a vinegar bath! This hack is really simple and can extend strawberries’ shelf life by up to a week. All you need to do is fill a bowl with water, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and let the berries soak for 5 minutes. This will help remove any potential contaminants from their surface and make them last longer. After the bath, just rinse them off with cold water and pat them dry with paper towels before putting them in the fridge.

Freeze Them Strawberries

If you simply can’t stomach the thought of eating your strawberries all at once, freezing them is a great way to extend their shelf life. You can freeze whole berries or cut them into halves or slices. To freeze, simply lay them in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet, making sure they don’t touch one another. Once frozen, throw the strawberries into an airtight container and store them in the freezer for up to 6 months.

When you’re ready to use them again, thaw your frozen strawberries slowly in the fridge overnight or in a bowl of cold water on the countertop. Frozen and then thawed strawberries will not be as firm as fresh ones, so they may be best used in dishes where texture isn’t important—in smoothies or jams and jellies.

Fans Take A Jibe At Mahira Khan's Brand For Being 'Ridiculously Overpriced'

Mahira Khan has come out with a clothing brand and the fans are not amused. The actress took to social media to announce the release of her first clothing line ‘M by Mahira’. The clothing lines feature an elaborate series of white kurta and white dupattas heavily inspired by the aura of the 90s. The brand thrives on designing minimalist and crafty pieces to elevate your daily wardrobe. However, there is a catch.

‘M By Mahira’

Mahira’s fashion sense needs no introduction. The actress has inspired us to step outside our comfort zone time and again and has served some major looks both onscreen and offscreen over the years. The same is the case with her clothing line, even though she hasn’t managed to make our jaws drop. The femininity and essence of her aura can be seen reflected in her designs. However, one thing that has put the nail in the coffin is the price point. For a white kurta with minimalistic embroidery, the price range of the entire collection is bonkers starting from as low as Rs.12000 and going all the way to Rs.25000.

Fans React To ‘M By Mahira’

While the brand has managed to call out the brand for being overpriced and overrated and truth be told we kind of agree with the public’s stance. There are quite a few ways to stand out while launching a clothing brand releasing overpriced white kurta’s is surely not one of them.

“Log pagal hain jo in tags aur brand k peechay bhagtay hain. Ye aam se kapre hazaron m khareed lenge aur ghareeb ko 100 rupiya extra dene m mout aati hain.” One user wrote.

“Itny expensive .. this is too much .. itna mehanga kapra b ni banta jitni yh loog prize set kar laity hain”

Meanwhile, many were amused to highlight that people who thrive on names and brands will surely get their hands on the designs as soon as they get the chance.

Amazon’s Self-Driving Robotaxi: Here’s What You Need To Know

Source: Yahoo News

Zoox, an Amazon subsidiary, has reported the successful testing of a self-driving car with its own staff as passengers. The test, which took place on a public road in California between two Zoox buildings, was part of the firm’s debut of a free staff shuttle service, which will also help the company develop its technology.

Zoox is creating a totally autonomous vehicle from the ground up, rather than modifying current vehicles for self-driving, and it lacks a steering wheel and pedals. It seats four people, two of whom are facing each other. The technology is being developed to fulfill regulatory criteria, and the test run on a public road marked an important step forward in the process.

When does it hit the road

Zoox CEO Aicha Evans told Reuters, “Putting the vehicle on open public road and verifying our approach to all of the many criteria, including regulatory, is a huge step, and we would not have done it unless internally we were already looking at the line of sight for becoming commercial.”

While Evans declined to specify a timetable for the commercial launch, the successful test is a big step forward for the firm, which was purchased by Amazon in 2020 for $1.3 billion. However, regulatory obstacles have hampered progress towards commercial deployment, with other firms like as Waymo and Cruise also encountering difficulties.

Despite these obstacles, Zoox’s tech head, Jesse Levinson, stated that the firm was still on target to achieve 2,500 people this year, up from slightly under 2,000 at the start of the year. And, with the market for self-driving cars heating up, it appears that the race to master this technology is far from done. Who knows, maybe we’ll all be driven about by robots sooner than we think.

Other companies getting involved

For more than a decade, Google, General Motors, and other technology and transportation corporations have invested billions of dollars developing self-driving vehicles with the promise of greater safety and convenience for riders. Yet, as the economy slows, several evangelists have abandoned their efforts, citing exorbitant costs and illusive revenues as reasons.

Ford and Volkswagen, two of the world’s largest manufacturers, ended their combined attempts to build self-driving taxis through a business named Argo AI in October.

Ford CEO Jim Farley stated at the time that he is “optimistic” about the future of completely driverless vehicles, but that “profitable, fully autonomous vehicles at scale are a long way off.” The corporation would not have to develop the technology itself.

Feeling the Beat: A Journey Through the Evolution of PSL Anthems

Source: A-sports

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) unveiled the official anthem for the country’s premier Twenty20 cricket event, which is set to begin next week. The inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) tournament was conducted in the United Arab Emirates in February 2016 since certain foreign cricketers were hesitant to play in the South Asian country due to security concerns. The PSL and its franchises began developing their own anthems to market themselves while inspiring their supporters. Many of these songs were quite famous and eventually took on a life of their own outside of the competition.

Which PSL anthem do fans like best?
Source: Geo

1. Ab Khel Ke Dikha (2016)

“Ab Khel Ke Dikha” was the official anthem of the 2016 Pakistan Super League, the league’s inaugural season. Ali Zafar wrote and performed the song. Ali Zafar created and recorded the song in his studio after being invited by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to create an anthem for the PSL’s debut season, which began in February 2016. As backup vocalists, he was accompanied by a chorus of 25 male and female singers. Due to the worldwide aspect of the competition, according to Zafar, the music video for the remix of the song was published on 4 February 2016 by HBL Pakistan, on audio of which Zafar subsequently performed at the opening ceremony of PSL season I.

2. Ab Khel Jamay Ga (2017)

PSL 2023: Mohammad Amir Receives Backlash For Being Abusive

With PSL 2023 commencing and with just two matches in, the audience has witnessed its first “heat of the moment” clash between the players. Yesterday, 14 February, the second match of PSL 8 was held at Karachi National Stadium. In the game, Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings squared off. Cricket is a game full of aggression and strong feelings, both from the players and the fans. So, fights and heated moments like these are quite common in such tournaments.

Mohammed Amir is a Pakistani cricketer and bowler for the Pakistan national cricket team. He is notoriously known for being the “angry young man” of the team. It is never new news to the public when they read or hear about Amir losing his cool during a game. Something similar happened in yesterday’s match. Mohammad Amir angrily threw the ball after getting a four from Babar Azam.

Muhammad Haris, a new player, blasted Mohammad Amir for an amazing four to open the innings. In the first over, Babar also smacked a powerful cover drive against Amir. In the sixth over of the game, the two stars squared off once more. Amir erred by drifting off his line and bowled an easy delivery down the leg side. Amir’s annoyance increased when Babar simply flicked the ball to the boundary. Have a look at the video first.

When Babar played a defensive shot directly at Amir on the following delivery, the bowler lost all control of his anger and flung the ball in the direction of the batsman. But as the wicketkeeper caught the ball, it was not intended for Babar. During the same match, just before this incident, Amir also abused Haris after being smashed a four.

Maybe Amir just wasn’t having a good day yesterday. But cricket fans definitely did not like Amir’s aggressive attitude. Have a look.

Is this the first time Mohammed Amir has let his emotions get the best of him during a match? No. But is this the last time? Who knows? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

PSL 2023: Aima Baig Trolled For Singing National Anthem

At the PSL opening ceremony, Aima Baig was able to perform her rendition of the Pakistani national anthem. But the real question is, was it simple enough to win over the crowd? The PSL opening ceremony took place yesterday and Aima Baig was now of the artists who were to be performing. She not only sang her own songs with Sahir Ali Bagga but also started off the event with her own version of the Pakistani national anthem. Here is the video.

Netizens being netizens had a lot to say about the performance. And not all of it was good.  As a result of channeling her inner “Sia” and “Ariana Grande,” Aima was subject to trolling. Here are some of the opinions from Twitter.

Many fans also compared Aima Baig’s entry performance to Ali Zafar’s performances.

Moreover, many people also thought Aima Baig was PSL’s or PCB’s favorite since she has appeared in all PSL opening ceremonies to date.

The entire performance was awkward and embarrassing, to say the least. The Pakistani national anthem is an iconic anthem, we are sure we will remember Aima every time we hear this anthem from now on. Netizens’ reaction to Aima Baig’s song has been nothing short of hilarious. While some wondered about her obsession with English songs, others wondered how she managed to stay confident throughout the performance.

Times When AI Went Wrong In The Real World

Source: Median

AI has advanced dramatically in the recent few decades. What was previously thought to be only feasible in science fiction films like Men in Black or The Matrix is now a reality. AI is already pervasive in areas ranging from health, fashion, and real estate to food and tourism. Its popularity has grown so rapidly that it has given rise to several strange uses.

It’s not all peaches and cream, though. According to a survey of worldwide firms that are already utilizing AI, a quarter of the corporations polled indicated a 50% failure rate for their AI initiatives.

1. Tesla car crash

Elon Musk’s Tesla ran into difficulty after a Tesla Model S crashed north of Houston in April, killing two people. The automobile had missed a tiny curve on the road and collided with a tree. According to early investigations and witness testimony, the driver’s seat was unoccupied at the time of the incident. As a result, it’s thought that Tesla’s Autopilot or Full Self Driving (FSD) technology was activated during the collision.

Tesla’s AI-powered Autopilot technology can manage steering, acceleration, and braking in specific instances. According to Musk, AI is intended to learn from the activities of drivers over time. Several safety advocates have chastised Tesla for not doing enough to prevent drivers from becoming overly reliant on its Autopilot functions, or from utilizing them in scenarios for which they were not built.

2. Amazon AI showed bias against women

Amazon began developing machine learning techniques in 2014 to examine resumes. The AI-based trial hiring tool, on the other hand, had a serious flaw: it was prejudiced toward women. The program taught to evaluate applications over a ten-year period by reviewing resumes submitted to the firm. Because the majority of these resumes were provided by males, the algorithm learned to prefer male candidates. This meant that resumes containing phrases like “women’s” (as in “women’s chess club leader”) were devalued. Graduates from two all-colleges women’s were similarly ranked lower.

3. AI mistakes a head for a ball

An AI-powered camera meant to automatically track the ball at a soccer game ended up monitoring the bald head of a linesman instead. The event occurred at the Caledonian Stadium in Scotland during a match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ayr United. The Inverness club had resorted to employing an automatic camera instead of human camera operators during the outbreak last October.

However, “the camera kept mistaking the ball for the bald head on the sidelines, robbing spectators of the genuine action while focusing on the linesman instead,” according to sources.

4. Microsoft’s AI turns sexist and racist

Microsoft introduced Tay, an AI chatbot, in 2016. Tay conversed with Twitter users in a “casual and humorous manner.” In less than 24 hours, however, Twitter users manipulated the bot to post highly sexist and racist comments. Tay used artificial intelligence to learn from its exchanges with Twitter users. The more it conversed, the “smarter” it grew. Soon after, the bot began repeating incendiary claims made by users, such as “Hitler was correct,” “feminism is cancer,” and “9/11 was an inside job.”

As the disaster developed, Microsoft was forced to pull the plug on the bot just a day after it was launched. Later, Microsoft’s Vice President of Research, Peter Lee, apologized.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Tips & Tricks You Should Know

Source:: Samsung

Samsung has announced three new flagship phones for 2023: the Galaxy S23, the bigger Galaxy S23+, and the top-tier Galaxy S23 Ultra. All will be available on Android 13 with One UI 5.1. If you’re used to Samsung’s software, you’ll be OK, but if you’re coming from an older device, you may notice that there are a lot of new functionalities and that things have relocated. The same is true if you’re an Android user: it’s familiar, but not identical. The Galaxy S23 has a lot packed inside it, and this is the definitive guide to figuring it out.

Top tip

If you get stuck, slide up from the bottom of the screen to open the applications tray on the Samsung Galaxy S23. To help you discover items, there’s a search bar at the top that searches settings, applications, contacts, calendars, and more.

Find setting

Locate the following settings: Much of what follows requires entering the settings; to do so, swipe down from the home screen and look for the cog in the upper right corner. When you tap here, you’ll be sent to the settings menu.

Turn on gesture navigations

Turn on gesture navigation: Samsung still offers button controls, which may be enabled by default. If you wish to use Android gestures, go to settings > display > navigation bar. You can modify the arrangement of the buttons or pick ‘Swipe gestures’ instead.

Alter your home screen

Alter your home screen: A long hold on any home screen’s wallpaper allows you to edit the wallpaper and style, themes, widgets, and access other options. This section also allows you to add screens (swipe to a new page and tap the large + in a circle) and erase entire screens (hit the trash can icon up top).

Customize UI colors

Change the colors of your UI: Through the home screen choices, you may access Android’s Material You feature. Then, select wallpaper and style. Aside from altering the backgrounds from the defaults, including animated ‘video’ alternatives, you’ll find the option for color palette in this area. This allows you to change the colors of the user interface based on your background. That option is also available for icons, but it only applies to native Samsung applications or folder backgrounds.

Link to Windows

You can sync to a Windows PC to manage mobile alerts, see recent images, make and receive calls through PC, access messaging/conversations, and sync mobile apps. Toggle it on in settings > linked devices > Link to Windows. You will then be guided through the setup procedure.

Turn on Google Assistant

Enable the “Hey/Ok Google” hot word: The Google app includes the hot word for getting Google to answer with just your voice. If you didn’t activate this on the first setup, the best method to access the settings is to launch Google Assistant (as above) and say “show me Google Assistant settings”. You’ll then navigate to the settings menu, where the first choice is for Hey Google and Voice Match, which you may enable.

Turn on eye comfort shield

Turn on the eye comfort shield: This adjusts the color of the display in order to eliminate blue light, avoid eye strain, and maybe help you sleep better. Toggle on ‘Eye comfort shield’ in settings > display. By selecting this option, you may choose between adaptive and custom modes, allowing you to have it on all the time or only from a specified period.
